Abstract: The essays in this book examine how important themes in Veena Das's work have been critically assimilated in the work of a younger generation. Looking at the relation between the event and the everyday, the essays ask how we might trace the picture of thinking in anthropology through ethnography and through artistic, literary and philosophical practice.

Abstract: How incidentally activated social representations affect subsequent thoughts and behaviors has long interested social psychologists. Recently, such priming effects have provoked debate and skepticism. Originally a special issue of Social Cognition, this book examines the theoretical challenges researchers must overcome to further advance priming studies and considers how these challenges can be met. The volume aims to reduce the confusion surrounding current discussions by more thoroughly considering the many phenomena in social psychology that the term "priming" encompasses, and closely examining the psychological processes that explain when and how different types of priming effects occur.

Abstract: Democratic countries are increasingly controlled by economic interests rather than by the rule of law. Charting the protesters and social movements "illegality" opposing authority this volume argues that they should be, nevertheless, considered the defenders of law and order. It is these social forces that represent the legitimate self-defense against corporate breaches of human rights condoned by their governments.

Abstract: The Western Balkan countries have been both a popular subject matter for diachronic analysis and a 1990s favorite. The significant changes that followed the most recent times of conflict in the region mostly evolve around the process of Europeanization. Despite the plethora of analyses, most approaches to the Western Balkans suffer from theoretical stagnancy, ex parte political practice, and detachment of politics from societal needs. This volume is the work of a team of theorists and practitioners who attempt a multidisciplinary approach to Western Balkans reality. An Agenda for the Western Balkans offers a critical view on issues that have been over-analyzed in mainstream terms and opens a discussion that will occupy researchers and practitioners for years to come. It addresses novel topics and engages in innovative approaches that cut across disciplines of social sciences (political science, international relations, sociology, historiography, geography, political economy) and levels of analysis (local, national, regional, European, global). This collection is a pioneer theoretical and practical guide towards a sustainable future for the Western Balkans.

Abstract: Family-related migration is moving to the center of political debates on migration, integration, and multiculturalism in Europe. Still, strands of academic research on family migrations and migrant families remain separate from-and sometimes ignorant of-each other. This volume seeks to bridge the disciplinary divide. Collectively, the authors address the need to better understand the diversity of family-related migration and its resulting family forms and practices, to question simplistic assumptions about migrant families in public discourse, to study family migration from a mix of disciplinary perspectives, and to acknowledge the state's role in shaping family-related migration, practices, and lives.

Abstract: Climate Change and the Bay of Bengal argues that in the era of climate change radically different understandings of security and sovereignty are at work. It questions the geopolitics of fear and the manner in which metanarratives of climate change tend to privilege the "global" and "national" scales over other scales, especially the regional and the local. The authors argue in favour of a new imagination of the Bay of Bengal space as a semi-enclosed sea, embedded in a large marine ecosystem, under the relevant provisions of the UNCLOS that impose various obligations upon its signatories to cooperate at a regional level. Such an imagination, anchored in geographies of hope, should not remain confined to official domains and discourses but become a part of popular socio-spatial consciousness through a regional public diplomacy reaching out to the grassroots level. A Bay of Bengal regional seas programme, under the auspices of UNEP, should be conceptualized and operationalized in a manner that explicitly factors in climate change consequences into the existing understandings and approaches to environmental-human security in the region.

Abstract: This volume provides social, political, and philosophical perspectives on the creation, nature, use, and ultimately, the value of indigenous concepts of education. Scholars examine concepts of education from indigenous cultures around the world, including knowledge traditions, ways of knowing, and cultural virtues. They explore in depth how these concepts are formed by communities and serve as drivers for these communities' aspirations and investigate how these ideas and Western concepts interact. Showcasing communities and contexts from North America, Africa, and Australia as arenas of knowledge production, the writers create from these analyses of varied cultures a robust theory of the implications of indigenous knowledge for wider and deeper understandings of education.Review: 'This exciting volume adds to the growing body of studies and theory on indigenous knowledge and indigenous epistemology in the social sciences, especially education. Situated within a critical theoretical paradigm, the editors and authors address the significance of indigenous perspectives and concepts in knowledge creation and their potential for rethinking public education in several cultural settings in Africa, Australia, Canada, and the USA. Anyone concerned with the relevance of indigenous epistemology in guiding education needs to read this book.' - Karen Ann Watson-Gegeo, Anthropologist in Education, University of California, Davis, USA

Abstract: The modern British soldier is routinely portrayed as a hero, while military service is represented as a form of sacrifice that requires recognition from society as a whole. The migrant, in the other hand, remains a focus of resentment, more likely to be seen as a scrounger who drains public resources without giving anything in return. In 1998 the British Army began to recruit from Commonwealth countries, a strategy that simultaneously addressed a labour shortage and the new legal obligations to diversify its workforce. This led to the creation of a new category of migrant-soldiers who found themselves lauded as 'heroes' but stigmatised as 'immigrants' and 'foreigners'. This book explores the phenomenon of Britain's multi-national army, a topic that has passed virtually unnoticed in public debates about immigration, citizenship, multiculturalism, national identity and war. In doing so, it poses searching questions about the relationship between the armed services and the society they are charged to defend.

Abstract: "In an arguably increasingly mobile world, mobilities are represented in society in many ways. There is a growing awareness that these representations not only help us understand the complexities of social relations in space but also produce society and space. There is also an increased interest in the adoption of research methodologies that are distinctly mobile. Simultaneously, the contested nature of representation is reflected in current discussions around the capacity for the practices of the mobile and sensuous body to be represented, as some movements are considered non-representable.This book engages with these debates, and, by exploring representations of mobilities in government policy, literature, visual arts, music, and in research, it examines the methodological potential of representations and the ways in which they co-produce mobilities"..

Abstract: Focusing on a number of contemporary research themes and placing them within the context of palpable changes that have occurred within football in recent years, this timely collection brings together essays about football, crime and fan behaviour from leading experts in the fields of criminology, law, sociology, psychology and cultural studies, Focusing on a number of contemporary research themes and placing them within the context of palpable changes that have occurred within football in recent years, this timely collection brings together essays about football, crime and fan behaviour from leading experts in the fields of criminology, law, sociology, psychology and cultural studies. Examining issues such as the links between football supporter sub-cultures and hate crime, football and corruption, football as a crime generator and the policing of crowds, this volume moves forward the debate on football hooliganism, situating the study of football and crime into appropriate historical, theoretical and policy contexts. This valuable collection illustrates that the analysis of football and fan behaviours still has much to offer the criminological community

Abstract: The book explores how time is materialized and performed in organizations; examines how organizations and organizational members are constituted by and constitutive of material artefacts; and reflects on what a historical perspective on these materializations can bring to the study of organizations, Sociomaterial research overcomes the dichotomy between social and material worlds by concentrating on organizational practices. These practices are constituted by, but also produce, material and social dynamics. This research is currently having an important impact in management studies and adopts a subjective investigation of time to explore materiality and materialization. Studying the institutional evolution of an organization implies long time spans and it is shown more clearly through the inclusion of material traces of past actions. Materiality and Time is split into three parts: Part I explores how time is materialized and performed in organizations, i.e. how artefacts and material space perform time and temporal dynamics in organizations. Part II examines how organizations and organizational members are constituted by and constitutive of material artefacts. Part III reflects on what a historical perspective on these materializations can bring to the study of organizations. Contributions focus on the materialization of time and the material dynamic of organizations

Abstract: "This collection compares the current stage of multicultural challenges and their influence on democracy in twelve countries of Europe and East Asia. While East Asia has recently experienced sociocultural cleavages and their challenges to democracy, Europe has faced increasing discontent over multiculturalism and has tried to seek alternative routes of social integration to sustain democracy. In other words, both continents have now faced the common problem of how to solve sociocultural cleavages and how to sustain democracy through overcoming multicultural challenges. Contributors examine twelve individual cases in the two continents and compare the divergence and convergence of multicultural practices, exploring different ways of achieving the shared values of democracy in a multicultural diversity. This book ultimately clarifies the differences between Europe and East Asia in their approaches to universalizing locality and localizing global norms regarding human rights and democratic individuality in the context of multicultural challenges"..

Abstract: "This book details magic's generally maleficent effect on human beings from ancient Egypt through the Middle Ages, including tales from classical mythology, Jewish, Christian, and Muslim cultures. Bottigheimer shows that certain magical motifs lived on from age to age, but that it took until the Italian Renaissance for magic tales to become fairy tales. Scores of forgotten or little known tales are re-told, allowing readers to form their own conclusions along with the author's analyses. "--

Abstract: Thermal energy storage (TES) technologies store thermal energy (both heat and cold) for later use as required, rather than at the time of production. They are therefore important counterparts to various intermittent renewable energy generation methods and also provide a way of valorising waste process heat and reducing the energy demand of buildings. This book provides an authoritative overview of this key area. Part one reviews sensible heat storage technologies. Part two covers latent and thermochemical heat storage respectively. The final section addresses applications in heating and energy systems. Reviews sensible heat storage technologies, including the use of water, molten salts, concrete and boreholes Describes latent heat storage systems and thermochemical heat storage Includes information on the monitoring and control of thermal energy storage systems, and considers their applications in residential buildings, power plants and industry

Abstract: Proceedings of the Fourth International Workshop on Machine Learning provides careful theoretical analyses that make clear contact with traditional problems in machine learning. This book discusses the key role of learning in cognition. Organized into 39 chapters, this book begins with an overview of pattern recognition systems of necessity that incorporate an approximate-matching process to determine the degree of similarity between an unknown input and all stored references. This text then describes the rationale in the Protos system for relegating inductive learning and deductive problem solving to minor roles in support of retaining, indexing and matching exemplars. Other chapters consider the power as well as the appropriateness of exemplar-based representations and their associated acquisition methods. This book discusses as well the extensions to the way a case is classified by a decision tree that address shortcomings. The final chapter deals with the advances in machine learning research. This book is a valuable resource for psychologists, scientists, theorists, and research workers.

Abstract: A classic introduction to artificial intelligence intended to bridge the gap between theory and practice, Principles of Artificial Intelligence describes fundamental AI ideas that underlie applications such as natural language processing, automatic programming, robotics, machine vision, automatic theorem proving, and intelligent data retrieval. Rather than focusing on the subject matter of the applications, the book is organized around general computational concepts involving the kinds of data structures used, the types of operations performed on the data structures, and the properties of the control strategies used. Principles of Artificial Intelligence evolved from the author's courses and seminars at Stanford University and University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and is suitable for text use in a senior or graduate AI course, or for individual study.

Abstract: Parallelism and Programming in Classifier Systems deals with the computational properties of the underlying parallel machine, including computational completeness, programming and representation techniques, and efficiency of algorithms. In particular, efficient classifier system implementations of symbolic data structures and reasoning procedures are presented and analyzed in detail. The book shows how classifier systems can be used to implement a set of useful operations for the classification of knowledge in semantic networks. A subset of the KL-ONE language was chosen to demonstrate these operations. Specifically, the system performs the following tasks: (1) given the KL-ONE description of a particular semantic network, the system produces a set of production rules (classifiers) that represent the network; and (2) given the description of a new term, the system determines the proper location of the new term in the existing network. These two parts of the system are described in detail. The implementation reveals certain computational properties of classifier systems, including completeness, operations that are particularly natural and efficient, and those that are quite awkward. The book shows how high-level symbolic structures can be built up from classifier systems, and it demonstrates that the parallelism of classifier systems can be exploited to implement them efficiently. This is significant since classifier systems must construct large sophisticated models and reason about them if they are to be truly ""intelligent."" Parallel organizations are of interest to many areas of computer science, such as hardware specification, programming language design, configuration of networks of separate machines, and artificial intelligence This book concentrates on a particular type of parallel organization and a particular problem in the area of AI, but the principles that are elucidated are applicable in the wider setting of computer science.

Abstract: Machine Learning: An Artificial Intelligence Approach, Volume III presents a sample of machine learning research representative of the period between 1986 and 1989. The book is organized into six parts. Part One introduces some general issues in the field of machine learning. Part Two presents some new developments in the area of empirical learning methods, such as flexible learning concepts, the Protos learning apprentice system, and the WITT system, which implements a form of conceptual clustering. Part Three gives an account of various analytical learning methods and how analytic learning can be applied to various specific problems. Part Four describes efforts to integrate different learning strategies. These include the UNIMEM system, which empirically discovers similarities among examples; and the DISCIPLE multistrategy system, which is capable of learning with imperfect background knowledge. Part Five provides an overview of research in the area of subsymbolic learning methods. Part Six presents two types of formal approaches to machine learning. The first is an improvement over Mitchell's version space method; the second technique deals with the learning problem faced by a robot in an unfamiliar, deterministic, finite-state environment.

Abstract: The field of computer vision combines techniques from physics, mathematics, psychology, artificial intelligence, and computer science to examine how machines might construct meaningful descriptions of their surrounding environment. The editors of this volume, prominent researchers and leaders of the SRI International AI Center Perception Group, have selected sixty papers, most published since 1980, with the viewpoint that computer vision is concerned with solving seven basic problems: Reconstructing 3D scenes from 2D images Decomposing images into their component parts Recognizing and assigning labels to scene objects Deducing and describing relations among scene objects Determining the nature of computer architectures that can support the visual function Representing abstractions in the world of computer memory Matching stored descriptions to image representation Each chapter of this volume addresses one of these problems through an introductory discussion, which identifies major ideas and summarizes approaches, and through reprints of key research papers. Two appendices on crucial assumptions in image interpretation and on parallel architectures for vision applications, a glossary of technical terms, and a comprehensive bibliography and index complete the volume.

Abstract: Principles of Knowledge Representation and Reasoning contains the proceedings of the Fourth International Conference on Principles of Knowledge Representation and Reasoning (KR '94) held in Bonn, Germany, on May 24-27, 1994. The conference provided a forum for reviewing the theory and principles underlying knowledge representation and reasoning. Topics covered range from reasoning about mental states and spatial reasoning with propositional logics to default logic as a query language. Comprised of 60 chapters, this book begins with a description of a formal language for representing and reasoning about time and action before turning to proof in context and how it can replace the most common uses of reflection principles. The reader is then introduced to reasoning with minimal models; belief ascription and mental-level modeling; and a unified framework for class-based representation formalisms. Abstract: Microprocessor Interfacing provides the coverage of the Business and Technician Education Council level NIII unit in Microprocessor Interfacing (syllabus U86/335). Composed of seven chapters, the book explains the foundation in microprocessor interfacing techniques in hardware and software that can be used for problem identification and solving. The book focuses on the 6502, Z80, and 6800/02 microprocessor families. The technique starts with signal conditioning, filtering, and cleaning before the signal can be processed. The signal conversion, from analog to digital or vice versa, is explained to answer why conversion is necessary for the microcomputer or processor. The types of analogue to digital converter, voltage measurements, scaling, and interfacing with ADC to a microcomputer are all taken into account. After the signal has been converted into readable data, the date transfer techniques are described. For data between systems and subsystems to be efficient, the timing, electrical, I/O lines, serial data, and bus structure should be considered. A more detailed explanation of parallel I/O controllers as applied to Z80 PIO and the 6821 PIA follows. For serial I/O controllers, the serial data transfers, speed in baud rate, software routines, and ASCII codes are all examined. Finally, the dedicated I/O controllers involving keyboard encoding, the ASCII (QWERTY) keyboard interface, the visual display unit, cathode ray tube controller devices, and the drive controllers are discussed, as each of these requires one specific application. This book is useful for computer engineers, software engineers, computer technicians, teachers, and instructors in the field of computing learning. This text can also be an informative reading for those have great interest in computer hardware.

Abstract: Connectionist Models contains the proceedings of the 1990 Connectionist Models Summer School held at the University of California at San Diego. The summer school provided a forum for students and faculty to assess the state of the art with regards to connectionist modeling. Topics covered range from theoretical analysis of networks to empirical investigations of learning algorithms; speech and image processing; cognitive psychology; computational neuroscience; and VLSI design. Comprised of 40 chapters, this book begins with an introduction to mean field, Boltzmann, and Hopfield networks, focusing on deterministic Boltzmann learning in networks with asymmetric connectivity; contrastive Hebbian learning in the continuous Hopfield model; and energy minimization and the satisfiability of propositional logic. Mean field networks that learn to discriminate temporally distorted strings are described. The next sections are devoted to reinforcement learning and genetic learning, along with temporal processing and modularity. Cognitive modeling and symbol processing as well as VLSI implementation are also discussed. This monograph will be of interest to both students and academicians concerned with connectionist modeling.

Abstract: Computational Learning Theory presents the theoretical issues in machine learning and computational models of learning. This book covers a wide range of problems in concept learning, inductive inference, and pattern recognition. Organized into three parts encompassing 32 chapters, this book begins with an overview of the inductive principle based on weak convergence of probability measures. This text then examines the framework for constructing learning algorithms. Other chapters consider the formal theory of learning, which is learning in the sense of improving computational efficiency as opposed to concept learning. This book discusses as well the informed parsimonious (IP) inference that generalizes the compatibility and weighted parsimony techniques, which are most commonly applied in biology. The final chapter deals with the construction of prediction algorithms in a situation in which a learner faces a sequence of trials, with a prediction to be given in each and the goal of the learner is to make some mistakes. This book is a valuable resource for students and teachers.

Abstract: A Many-Sorted Calculus Based on Resolution and Paramodulation emphasizes the utilization of advantages and concepts of many-sorted logic for resolution and paramodulation based automated theorem proving. This book considers some first-order calculus that defines how theorems from given hypotheses by pure syntactic reasoning are obtained, shifting all the semantic and implicit argumentation to the syntactic and explicit level of formal first-order reasoning. This text discusses the efficiency of many-sorted reasoning, formal preliminaries for the RP- and ?RP-calculus, and many-sorted term rewriting and unification. The completeness and soundness of the ?RP-calculus, sort theorem, and automated theorem prover for the ?RP-calculus are also elaborated. This publication is a good source for students and researchers interested in many-sorted calculus.

Abstract: A clear illustration of how parallel computers can be successfully applied to large-scale scientific computations. This book demonstrates how a variety of applications in physics, biology, mathematics and other sciences were implemented on real parallel computers to produce new scientific results. It investigates issues of fine-grained parallelism relevant for future supercomputers with particular emphasis on hypercube architecture. The authors describe how they used an experimental approach to configure different massively parallel machines, design and implement basic system software, and develop algorithms for frequently used mathematical computations. They also devise performance models, measure the performance characteristics of several computers, and create a high-performance computing facility based exclusively on parallel computers. By addressing all issues involved in scientific problem solving, Parallel Computing Works! provides valuable insight into computational science for large-scale parallel architectures. For those in the sciences, the findings reveal the usefulness of an important experimental tool. Anyone in supercomputing and related computational fields will gain a new perspective on the potential contributions of parallelism. Includes over 30 full-color illustrations.
