Abstract: In the different versions of multiculturalism that have re-shaped English-speaking societies and political systems, identities appear more plastic than in societies which have constructed their national narratives on more stubborn denials of their colonial and patriarchal pasts; yet, the myth of purity (or authenticity) and separatist temptations remain very real parameters of identity politics. In such contexts, crafting an identity for oneself implies expectations of consistency, linked not only to the individual need to prove oneself and disprove stereotypes and statistics, but also to the broader political goal of dis-alienating or, as it were, de-Othering oneself and one's community. The contributors to this book explore the different ways - from the most institutional to the most intimate - in which people articulate the politics of memory and the creation of national narratives, or communal and personal identities.

Abstract: Political Violence in Latin America offers the reader an exceptional analysis of the dynamics of social revolutionary conflicts. In an original comparison of three case studies, the book explores the development of political violence throughout episodes of social conflict. By applying social movement theory, the study reconstructs in detail the insurgent campaigns of the Argentinean Montoneros, the Colombian M-19 and the Nicaraguan FSLN, and analyzes the development of violence, paying specia

Abstract: Marronnage is a stance, an attitude, a mentality or even a style. This book gives a large span of declensions of marronnage and shows how the quest for freedom during Slavery has infiltrated social relationships and the arts. Thus, identity approaches and expressions very specific to postcolonial societies and conditioned by the interracial and phenotypical-social interactions have developed. Those musics and dances are cosmogonies with their particular codes. New spheres where the enslaved

Abstract: In the post-socialist countries, the subject of consumption has not received sufficient attention from the perspective of Consumer Culture Theory. The opinion has long prevailed among the majority of social scientists from this region that consumer society and consumptive behaviour is a socially destructive phenomenon and one of the main causes of problems in contemporary society. This impression has prevented them from scrutinizing the symbolic dimension of consumption and led them to a crit...

Abstract: This book revisits the debate over manners and morals that raged in France, Britain and the United States in the late nineteenth century. It was in essence a debate about gender and sexuality, and one of the foremost figures in the transnational discussions was the French writer and lecturer Paul Blouet, alias Max O'Rell (1847-1903). Although largely forgotten today, O'Rell deserves remembering as a major phenomenon of the fin-de-siècle publishing and entertainment world. A Frenchman living i

Abstract: Reading, Writing, and Digitizing offers a new theoretical proposal concerning expert and novice readers and writers based on the psycholinguistics of literacy. This book has five specific goals. First, it presents a theory of meta-reading and writing that describes what literacy experts are able to do with written text. They do what the word "meta" describes: go before and after, into and around, beyond and beside written text to understand and create meaning. Second, the case studies present

Abstract: On Easter Monday, 24 April 1916, the socialist writer James Connolly ordered an armed group to march down Dame Street in Dublin, in what became a citizens' occupation of Dublin city centre. As Connolly hoped, the shockwave launched by the doomed uprising kindled fires of revolution throughout the colonies during all of the 20th century. On 18 November 2010, a small unescorted group of IMF technocrats walked down Dame Street - home of their goal, the Irish Central Bank - to articulate the re-

Abstract: 2011 was a tumultuous year in terms of social protest movements. The Occupy movement spread across the globe with unprecedented support of an enormity not seen since 1968, while revolutions in Egypt, Tunisia, Morocco, Syria and Libya caught the attention of the global media and brought the word "revolution" back into public discussions on social justice and governance. For many people worldwide, it appears that it is time for social, political and economic change. And it is precisely time, in

This book will argue that 'culture shock' is a useful model for understanding an important part of human experience. However, in its most widely-known form, the stage model, 'culture shock' has been heavily influenced by the same anti-science, latter-day religiosity that has become so influential more broadly: Multiculturalism. Abstract: Islands and archipelagos hold great imaginative power, and they have long been a subject of study for cartographers and geographers, for anthropologists and historians of colonisation. But what does it mean to be an islander? Can one feel both British and Manx, for example? What are British tourists looking for when they go to former island colonies? Abstract: The theme for this volume is social cognition, construed from a psychological and collective point of view. From the psychological point of view the question is to understand how the human mind processes social information; how it encodes, stores and uses it in the social context. From a collective point of view, the question is to understand how individual cognition is influenced (improved, increased or impaired) by social interactions, for instance in communicating and collaborating with intelligent agents. These two dimensions of social cognition are obviously interdependent: the psychologi

As we see in these essays, the Europeans' cultural others (peripheral nations and former colonies) have established an intercultural and intercontinental dialogue among themselves, without feeling the need to resort to the center-metropolis' mediation. Abstract: In the post 9/11 world, the emotionally charged concepts of identity and ideology, enmity and political violence have once again become household words. Contrary to the serene assumptions of the early 1990s, history did not end. Civilisations are busy clashing against one another, and the self-proclaimed pacified humanity is once again showing its barbaric roots. Religion mixes with politics to produce governments that abuse even their own citizens, and victorious insurgents too often fail t

Women's Voices and Feminism in Polish Cultural Memory seeks to elaborate the problem of generalization, expressed by such formulas as "feminism ...
