Abstract: Plants provide the food, shelter, medicines, and biomass that underlie sustainable life. One of the earliest and often overlooked uses of plants is the production of smoke, dating to the time of early hominid species. Plant-derived smoke has had an enormous socio-economic impact throughout human history, being burned for medicinal and recreational purposes, magico-religious ceremonies, pest control, food preservation, and flavoring, perfumes, and incense. This illustrated global compendium documents and describes approximately 2,000 global uses for over 1,400 plant species. The Uses and Abuses

Abstract: "How does cooperation emerge among selfish individuals? When do people share resources, punish those they consider unfair, and engage in joint enterprises? These questions fascinate philosophers, biologists, and economists alike, for the "invisible hand" that should turn selfish efforts into public benefit is not always at work. The Calculus of Selfishness looks at social dilemmas where cooperative motivations are subverted and self-interest becomes self-defeating. Karl Sigmund, a pioneer in evolutionary game theory, uses simple and well-known game theory models to examine the foundations of collective action and the effects of reciprocity and reputation." "Focusing on some of the best-known social and economic experiments, including games such as the Prisoner's Dilemma, Trust, Ultimatum, Snowdrift, and Public Good, Sigmund explores the conditions leading to cooperative strategies. His approach is based on evolutionary game dynamics, applied to deterministic and probabilistic models of economic interactions." "Exploring basic strategic Interactions among individuals guided by self-interest and caught in social traps, The Calculus of Selfishness analyzes to what extent one key facet of human nature - selfishness - can lead to cooperation."--Jacket

It offers and develops a new theoretical matrix that can illuminate these trends in a more complex and instructive way. The concept of milieu cultures combines theoretical strands drawn from phenomenology, Bourdieu's reflexive sociology and globalisation theory with new and original case study work on a variety of cities and musical worlds (Bristol, London, New York, San Francisco, Berlin; Trip-hop, Hip-hop, Industria

Abstract: Emphasizing the importance of culture and the arts in society, this reprint of a 1960s classicthe author's last book of social criticismincludes a new introduction that situates the late Paul Goodman in his era and traces the development of his characteristic insights. The probing introduction speaks for a new generation of young scholars as it discusses the initial impact and continuing relevance of Goodman's problematic love affair with the radical youth of the 1960s. Timely and compelling, Goodman's narrative reassesses what he considered a moral and spiritual upheaval comparable to the Protestant Reformation"the breakdown of belief, and the emergence of new belief, in sciences and professions, education, and civil legitimacy." With new analysis of 1960s activism, this survey shows that Goodman's prescient voice is as relevant today as it was four decades ago.

Abstract: Both a radical feminist history and a street art resource, this handbook combines short biographies with striking and usable stencil images of 30 female activists, anarchists, feminists, freedom fighters, and visionaries. From Harriet Tubman, Emma Goldman, and Angela Davis to Vandana Shiva, Sylvia Rivera, and Lucy Parsons, this collection offers a subversive portrait celebrating the military prowess and revolutionary drive of these women whose violent resolve often shatters the archetype of woman as nurturer. A sampling of quotes from key writings and speeches gives voice to each woman's ideologies, philosophies, struggles, and quiet humanity while the stencils offer further opportunities to commemorate these women and their actions through the reproduction of their likenesses.

Abstract: The child star is an iconic figure in Western society representing a growing cultural trend which idolises, castigates and fetishises the image of the perfect, innocent and beautiful child. In this book, Jane O'Connor explores the paradoxical status of the child star who is both adored and reviled in contemporary society. Drawing on current debates about the commercialisation and sexualisation of childhood and fears about children 'growing up too soon', she identifies hostile media attention around child stars as indicative of broader social concerns about the 'correct' role and place of child

Abstract: "Human trafficking is not an issue of the left or right, blue states or red states, but a great moral tragedy we can unite to stop . . . Not for Sale is a must-read to see how you can join the fight." -Jim Wallis, author of God's Politics "David Batstone is a heroic character." -Bono In the revised and updated version of this harrowing yet deeply inspirational exposé, award-winning journalist David Batstone gives the most up-to-date information available on the 31 billion human trafficking epidemic. With profiles of twenty-first century abolitionists like Thailand's Kru Nam and Peru's Lucy Borja, Batstone tells readers what they can do to stop the modern slave trade. Like Kevin Bales' Disposable People and Ending Slavery, or E. Benjamin Skinner's A Crime So Monstrous, Batstone's Not for Sale is an informative and necessary manifesto for universal freedom.

Abstract: Language and Politics in Africa is a fine collection of both empirically and theoretically based articles from across the African continent and beyond, but all focusing on the twin issues of Language and Politics in post colonial African countries. The authors offer critical perspectives on contemporary theoretical, empirical and policy issues related to language and how such issues manifest themselves at the inevitable interface with politics in a number of African countries. Coming at a time when most African countries are still grappling with language policy and planning issues while others are increasingly having to contend with the political outcomes of linguistically and ethnically heterogeneous nation-states, the present volume is a must read for scholars and students who are interested on the twin issues of language and politics since it represents one of the first attempts at documenting how language and politics affect each other in a number of African countries. The volume is divided into two sections dealing with the politics of language and the language of politics in African countries.

Abstract: The study of language attitudes is the investigation of beliefs expressed about the nature of language and its diverse usages, how these attitudes came to exist and persist, and how these attitudes shape social action and policy. Language attitude studies have illuminated our understanding of racial issues, social and economic stratification, cultural stereotypes, educational issues, folk linguistics, and, more recently, popular culture. This volume is an examination of four intersections in language attitudes research: Authority, Affiliation, Authenticity, and Accommodation. In each section, the contributors introduce new dimensions to the study of language attitudes while providing examples of the ways in which the study of language attitudes can continue to inform and shape our understanding of language diversity.

Abstract: This volume shows the formidable range of variation in youth language. Youth language is analyzed as a phenomenon in negotiations of identities and social relations. The contributions particularly concentrate on youth language in late modern urban societies. This is an area of study which has been gaining increasing attention in sociolinguistics over the past few years. One observation that is almost inevitable is that there is a string of similarities to be found between youths in quite different circumstances, ranging from university students in Argentina, to juvenile delinquents in Greece and to skaters in Greenland. A wide range of language situations are covered, from Danish, Cypriot Greek, Turkish, to Spanish, Greenlandic, Norwegian, Catalan, and of course English. The articles in this anthology document and analyze linguistic youth styles and behaviors as well as attitudes. In their totality they present a picture of youth language as functional, socially valuable, and flexible, with a special emphasis on identity negotiations.

Abstract: Religion evokes strong emotions and raises hard questions. This volume addresses many of the contentious elements that religion provokes and challenges some of the easy answers contemporary society has produced. The frequent and often facile dictum about the separation of church and state, when examined closely, may prove to contribute to the erosion of some of our most cherished human values, rather than to their preservation. The science-versus-religion dichotomy is dogma for many, yet the empiricism that is the hallmark of scientific method and knowledge can be singularly absent from positions that claim to be science. The current spate of attacks against God and religion that are now commonplace, when critically scrutinized, often fail to provide compelling arguments or even to be as objective as their authors claim. These and other explorations are the focus of this book. From the Forward in which Charles Kimball challenges the West to re-evaluate its perspective and understanding of the East, particularly Islam, to the Afterword in which theologian Gregory Baum chronicles the extraordinary reversal of sociology's estimation of religion, the invitation from this volume to all of us is to review our pieties and presuppositions as we reflect on the future of religion.

Abstract: This edited interdisciplinary collection draws together recent original work on the connections between radicalism and localism in a variety of international locations over the last two hundred years. The areas covered include the United Kingdom, North America, South Africa, the Caribbean, Germany, Italy and Spain. The book questions whether certain political issues have more impact at a local level and whether common radical responses can be discerned across space and time. The contributors' essays also consider to what extent the local offers a space in which new political possibilities can be explored, and especially the extent to which radical participation from groups who are under-represented in many national campaigns appears more easily available at the local level. Finally, the essays in the collection examine the distinctiveness of local political radicalism. This involves looking at the activities of communal organizations and political parties that defined themselves against nationally-situated sites of power, but also at how the many cultural manifestations of radicalism, such as music, theatre and art, were shaped distinctively at local level and how radical ideas were spread across wider areas from local bases.

Abstract: Anthropology is more relevant than ever before to making sense of the constant intercultural encounters taking place around the world. Even though the discipline was born out of the need to understand the way humans interact, it had for decades been trapped in a counter-cultural stance that effectively disarmed it of any direct influence on public affairs. Recent global trends, however, have brought this academic discipline to the attention of governments, agencies, and social entrepreneurs, because of its capacity to create bridges of understanding between people of contrasting cultures. This ability is today more necessary than ever before in facing the challenges posed by the shrinking of our world. This volume provides reflections on what anthropological research can offer through its "thick" analyses. We are convinced that ethnographic research can contribute to a better understanding of social phenomena in our global times.

Abstract: Reveries of Home considers understandings of home in the world today and the means by which feelings of homeliness are secured. In particular, the volume explores the relationship between the phenomenon of globalisation and the ways in which home-making entails acts of practical and symbolic emplacement in landscapes felt to be meaningful and authentic. A series of case-studies, from Norway and West Africa, the mid-western USA, Egypt, Scotland and elsewhere, offer an illustrative array of homes made in rural communities and urban worksites, in personal life-histories and the policies of diasporic groups, in ceremonial revivals and mundane routines: in postcards, house furnishings, dreams, clothes and smells. Home-making appears as a kind of work; and it is ongoing, for 'place' and being 'emplaced' are not givens. Instead, home-making exists in time: in moments of individual and collective performance which are both mundane and memorial. Reveries of Home offers a set of cases and a set of arguments that reveal the close connections that remain between home and identity, even in a world of movement.

Abstract: The volume Gardens of Madeira - Gardens of the World. Contemporary Approaches displays present tendencies in calling upon the idea of gardens, being a wide-range approach to their literary, sociological and cultural representations. The book`s four parts: "Madeira: A Garden in the Sea?", "Gardens as Temporal and Spatial Category. Cultural and Literary Approaches", "Gardens as an Expression. Socio-cultural Perspectives" and "Re-Creating the Archetypal Garden - Discourses and Practices" refer to vast geographical and cultural areas, starting with the very complex sample of the overseas-yet-European Island of Madeira, and then joining the exemplification material from historical and contemporary European communities (with some luso-centric accents), including examples from the less known Slavonic and Eastern European countries. Those European issues are confronted with various non-European societies such as from Africa, Asia, and both Americas. Gardens evoke and express in many ways the present human condition, and - as such a process goes on - this book provides proposals for patterns to connect them to the modern and post-modern rules of self defining, reading the Other, interpreting world/national/cultural literatures, as well as to the various attempts to introduce the idea of gardens into the basic spatial and temporal aspects of contemporary communities. It also demonstrates the theoretical and practical attempts to project our "gardens` dependence" on to one of the essentials for contemporary societies which are multicultural, urbanised, technologically equipped and dependent, but which still are keen on reading and constructing paradises as environmental and cultural spaces for both asylum and encounter. The huge advantage of the book is showing to scholars and the wider public how discourses from the past meet with the quests of both the

Abstract: Culture as Text, Text as Culture represents a novel, interdisciplinary analysis of textuality as it pertains to Cultural Studies. More specifically, the work examines how the analysis of texts has shaped the most vital contemporary debate of Cultural Studies: the recognition that all texts and their contexts are constructs. Building upon a Post-structural/Post-modern understanding of truth as a construct, Cultural Studies has long since acknowledged the ability of texts to express the time and culture of their origin. This work, however, expands this idea, demonstrating not only how a culture is preserved in a text, but how that text can in turn define its culture, even redefine its history. This compendium is structured around four of the most prominent contemporary topics of Cultural Studies: the relationship between historical and fictional writing, the ability of authors to recreate or redefine history, the relationship between language and image, and the ability for traditionally marginalized groups to reassert their place in history. The book presents articles from a large spectrum of disciplinary fields and civilizations in order to demonstrate how the application of Cultural Studies can unite seemingly disparate disciplines.

Abstract: Queer Exoticism: Examining the Queer Exotic Within joins the growing bibliography of queer postcolonial and queer race studies. The authors assembled here examine the queer tendency to visit decidedly different and unusual subjects of desire in an effort, partially at least, to find oneself. The identity quest that is inherent in the search for the exotic often results in something quite the opposite of foreign since it forms and articulates that which is ourselves. Thus experiencing the exotic becomes a path to self-knowledge, not unlike the work of therapy wherein the examination of elements that appear at first peculiar or unfamiliar end up opening channels to self-discovery. In this way, the gaze outward turns inward to exhibit an inner exoticism that, at times, is at once, always and already, inner and outer. These essays also focus on various questions of imperialism, race, exoticism, along with other aspects of the exotic. Going beyond Said's sense of orientalism, this volume examines the otherness of oneself and the notion of desire for the Other as something different from purely an act of domination and colonization, thereby refusing perceptions of ascendancy. Insomuch as they represent various geographic and cultural groups, the studies lend themselves to a variety of different methodologies and analytical approaches.

Abstract: Dieser Band dokumentiert die Vorträge der 18.

Abstract: Does human mortality after age 110 continue to rise, level off, or start to decline? This book describes a concerted, international research effort undertaken with the goal of establishing a database that allows the best possible description of the mortality trajectory beyond the age of 110. The International Database on Longevity (IDL) is the result of this ongoing effort. The IDL contains exhaustive information on validated cases of supercentenarians (people 110 years and older) and allows unbiased estimates of mortality after age 110. The main finding is remarkable: human mortality after age 110 is flat at a probability of death of 50% per year. The sixteen chapters of this book discuss age validation of exceptional longevity, data on supercentenarians in a series of countries, structure and contents of the IDL, and statistical analysis of human mortality after age 110. Several chapters include short accounts of specific supercentenarians that add life to demographic research.

    DDC: 303
    Keywords: Electronic books
Abstract: This review presents a general picture of the overall regulatory reform frameworks in Italy, examining quality regulation, competition policy and professional services. The review also offers a special focus on multi-level governance, where key issues include local public services, commercial distribution, local transport and energy. The review finds that Italy has made significant progress using regulatory reform since the first OECD review in 2001. Administrative simplification and the increasing role of competition policy, combined with devolution of state powers to regions, have helped. But there are still key challenges for regulatory policy and its implementation, including enforcement, capacity in the civil service, impact analysis for evidence-based decision-making, and building a culture of consultation. The current global economic crisis is an opportunity for Italy to further clarify how the state intervenes in the economy, to improve multi-level co-ordination, and to expand competition in specific sectors.

Abstract: This project is the result of a philosopher`s extended engagement with the literature and practice of political science and public policy formation. One finds in these fields, and in social science generally, two fundamentally opposed approaches to inquiry into the nature and cause of historical political events. These two approaches, which are sometimes employed simultaneously, are both powerful and persuasive. Yet, the two accounts are incompatible and comprehensive. Making a choice between the two is not simply about choosing a view of history, the choice affects how one anticipates policy developments in the future, and, more importantly, how one seeks to influence and shape public policy now and in the years to come. Because there is no external standard of history by which to judge them, one must examine the conceptions of human nature, reason and freedom underlying each in order to adjudicate between the two. Following Alasdair MacIntyre`s approach in Three Rival Versions of Moral Inquiry, this book analyzes and evaluates the internal coherence and ultimate viability of the two fundamental versions of historical inquiry. Intended not only for philosophers but also for students and practitioners of political science and public policy, the book includes a case study of a particularly significant political development in U.S. history- the ratification of the 16th Amendment- and suggests some specific implications of the philosophical conclusions. Abstract: Lange Zeit galt der Mensch als egoistisches Einzelwesen.

Abstract: Franco De Masi, a psychoanalyst and a supervisor at the Italian Psychoanalytic Society, is well-known for his research on psychotic phenomena. His book on perversion provides numerous thought-provoking impulses and orientation aids for a better understanding of the complex mechanisms and of the experiences in perverse relationships and structured sexual perversions. De Masi studies the relationship between sadomasochism and other psychological conditions, such as depression, psychoses and borderline disorders and discusses the nature of evil in light of various psychoanalytic approaches.
Abstract: Franco De Masi, Psychoanalytiker und Supervisor der Italienischen Psychoanalytischen Gesellschaft, ist bekannt für seine Forschungen zu psychotischen Phänomenen.

    Keywords: Electronic books
Abstract: Racism in America is most-commonly studied as white racism against minority groups (racial, gender, cultural). Often overlooked in this area of study is the discrimination that exists within minority groups. Through a detailed historical and sociological analysis, the author breaks down these pernicious, complex, and often misunderstood forms of skin color discrimination: their origins and their manifestations in modern world. Shedding new light on these sensitive issues, this volume will allow them to come to the forefront of academic research and open dialogue. This comprehensive work will include coverage of skin color discrimination within racial, ethnic, sexual, and gender minority groups, and their particular forms and consequences. An Historical Analysis of Skin Color will be an important work for researchers studying the Sociology of Race and Racism, Gender Studies, LGBT Studies, Immigration, or Social Work. Abstract: "In the 1960s, activists and authors applied Marxist analysis to issues of sexuality and the family. Instead of focusing solely on personal identity, these activist scholars argued that sexuality was directly related to economic factors such as labor, health care, and education. This book seeks to revive dialectical materialist interpretations of sexuality, relevant to K-12 settings and society. Issues addressed include: LGBTQ community and history, gender-based harassment and bullying, sexuality and the curriculum, ideological origins of homophobia, theories of the family (conservative, psychoanalytical, anarchist, materialist), critiques of postmodernism, socialist feminism, and activist tactics/strategies for organizing in K-12 settings"--Provided by publisher

Abstract: This book is a long overdue survey of all the effects of language on the three levels of evolution, system and discourse? and of what thinkers have written about them. From Plato?s critique of Sophistry to Bacon?s idola fori, Humboldt?s?language is energy?, and finally Wittgenstein?s?language games?? the 21 chapters of the book deal critically with the power of language and what philosophers have said about it. Abstract: A human being is a symbolic creature and, to the same extent, an active inventor of otherness. Europe and Turkey, The West and the Balkans, are infinitely exploitable symbols. Any symbol, inherently polysemic and socially construed, is continuously contested and negotiated. The image of 'the Turk' as a ruthless plunderer is still vivid in European collective memory. Although it occasionally still verges on ethnic mythology, it clearly belongs to a past where, along with the plague and famin
