    Abstract: Der Wirtschaftsraum in der EuRegio zwischen Aachen und Verviers wächst heute wieder zusammen. Migration über die Grenzen hinweg ist dabei ein bestimmendes Element. Solche kleinräumige Wanderungsbewegungen sind im Dreiländereck jedoch keineswegs ein neues Phänomen. Schon vor 200 Jahren waren sie ein Garant für den Erfolg der Entwicklung, etwa der Tuchindustrie.Die von belgischen und deutschen Wissenschaftlern gemeinsam erstellte Studie untersucht neben den Rahmenbedingungen unterschiedlichste Aspekte dieser Gesellschaft von Migranten. Immer haben die Autoren dabei die Menschen, ihre Chancen und Schicksale im Blick. Sie zeigen, dass vor und nach 1800 im Raum zwischen Aachen und Verviers nicht vordringlich Grenzen und nationalstaatliche Ressentiments bestimmend waren, sondern viel stärker mikro- und makroökonomische Bedingungen das Leben der Menschen beeinflussten.Doch die Geschichte soll nicht abstrakt bleiben: Das Buch wird ergänzt durch eine Reiseroute auf den Spuren der Migration. Vorgestellt werden zudem die wichtigsten Archive in Belgien und Deutschland

    Abstract: What constitutes a 'normal' child? Throughout the nineteenth century public health and paediatrics played a leading role in the image and conception of children. By the twentieth century psychology had moved to the forefront, transforming our thinking and understanding. Andre Turmel investigates these transformations both from the perspective of the scientific observation of children (public hygiene, paediatrics, psychology and education) and from a public policy standpoint (child welfare, health policy, education and compulsory schooling). Using detailed historical accounts from Britain, the USA and France, Turmel studies how historical sequential development and statistical reasoning have led to a concept of what constitutes a 'normal' child and resulted in a form of standardization by which we monitor children. He shows how western society has become a child-centred culture and asks whether we continue to base parenting and teaching on a view of children that is no longer appropriate

    Abstract: Warum reden alle vom Raum? Ist die Zeit der wissenschaftlichen Vorherrschaft der Zeit vorüber? Was tritt unter den Bedingungen der Globalisierung an die Stelle eines schwächelnden Fortschritts- und Entwicklungsparadigmas? Wenn mittlerweile fast alle Disziplinen in den Kultur- und Sozialwissenschaften damit beschäftigt sind, ihre Diskurse zu »verräumlichen«, ist dann die Rede von einem »Spatial Turn« angemessen? Diese Anthologie leistet zweierlei: Zum ersten Mal erscheint auf dem deutschen Buchmarkt eine fächerübergreifende Anthologie zum Spatial Turn und zum ersten Mal findet eine Diskussion auch unter Beteiligung der Geographen statt - jenen »Raumspezialisten«, die sich in jüngster Zeit als scharfe Kritiker der fächerübergreifenden Raumkonjunktur profiliert haben.

    Abstract: The third part of The New Cambridge History of India is devoted to the Indian Empire and the Beginnings of Modern Society. In the first volume, Kenneth Jones looks at the numerous nineteenth-century movements for social and religious change - Christian, Hindu, Muslim, Sikh and Zoroastrian - that used various forms of religious authority to legitimize their reform programmes. Such movements were both indigenous and colonial in their origins and Professor Jones shows how each adapted to the challenge of competing nationalisms as political circumstances changed. The volumes in this part of the History consider the overall impact of British rule upon the whole sphere of religion, social behaviour and culture.     Abstract: This book examines how it was possible and what it meant for ordinary factory workers to become effective unionists and national political participants by the mid-1930s. We follow Chicago workers as they make choices about whether to attend ethnic benefit society meetings or to go to the movies, whether to shop in local neighborhood stores or patronize the new A&P. As they made daily decisions like these, they declared their loyalty in ways that would ultimately have political significance. When the depression worsened in the 1930s, workers adopted new ideological perspectives and overcame longstanding divisions among themselves to mount new kinds of collective action. Chicago workers' experiences all converged to make them into New Deal Democrats and CIO unionists. First printed in 1990, Making a New Deal has become an established classic in American history. The second edition includes a new preface by Lizabeth Cohen
