Kurzfassung: "This book advances the practice and theory of design ethnography. It presents a methodologically adventurous and conceptually robust approach to interventional and ethical research design, practice, and engagement. The authors, specialising in design ethnography across the fields of anthropology, sociology, human geography, pedagogy, and design research, draw on their extensive international experience of collaborating with engineers, designers, creative practitioners, and specialists from other fields. They call for, and demonstrate the benefits of, ethnographic and conceptual attention to design as part of our personal and public everyday lives, society, institutions, and activism. Design Ethnography is essential reading for researchers, scholars and students seeking to reshape the way we research, live, and design ethically and responsibly into yet unknown futures"--...

Kurzfassung: In the accounts compiled in this book, ethnography occurs through processes of material and social interventions that turn the field into a site for epistemic collaboration. Through creative interventions that unfold what we term as "fieldwork devices"-such as coproduced books, the circulation of repurposed data, co-organized events, authorization protocols, relational frictions, and social rhythms-anthropologists engage with their counterparts in the field in the construction of joint anthropological problematizations. In these situations, the traditional tropes of the fieldwork encounter (i.e. immersion and distance) give way to a narrative of intervention, where the aesthetics of collaboration in the production of knowledge substitutes or intermingles with participant observation. Building on this, the book proposes the concept of "experimental collaborations" to describe and conceptualize this distinctive ethnographic modality.

Kurzfassung: "Uncertainty is increasingly central to scholarship, research and practice across design, social science and humanities disciplines. Both theoretical concepts and empirical investigations of uncertainty and possibility are emerging as scholars and practitioners seek news ways to understand and intervene in a world of crisis with creativity, hope and speculation. This ground-breaking book offers new perspectives on the central issues of uncertainty and possibility and identifies new research methods which take advantage of disruptive and experimental techniques. Advancing a practical agenda for future making, it reveals how uncertainty can be engaged as a generative 'technology' for understanding, researching and intervening in the world. Drawing on key themes in creative methodologies - making, essaying, inhabiting, gathering - the eight chapters explore contemporary sites of practice, such as maker spaces and technology design, the imaginaries of architectural design, the temporalities of built cultural heritage, and interdisciplinary making and performing. Based on the authors' own academic work and their applied research with a range of different organizations, Uncertainty and Possibility outlines new opportunities for research and intervention. Supported by online resources, it is essential reading for students, scholars and practitioners in design anthropology and design."...

Kurzfassung: This sharp, innovative book champions the rising significance of ethnographic research on the use of digital resources around the world. It contextualises digital and pre-digital ethnographic research and demonstrates how the methodological, practical and theoretical dimensions are increasingly intertwined. Digital ethnography is central to our understanding of the social world; it can shape methodology and methods, and provides the technological tools needed to research society. The authoritative team of authors clearly set out how to research localities, objects and events as well as providing insights into exploring individuals' or communities' lived experiences, practices and relationships. The book: * Defines a series of central concepts in this new branch of social and cultural research * Challenges existing conceptual and analytical categories * Showcases new and innovative methods * Theorises the digital world in new ways * Encourages us to rethink pre-digital practices, media and environments This is the ideal introduction for anyone intending to conduct ethnographic research in today's digital society. Review: An essential book for anyone looking to research our contemporary media-saturated context and the implications it has for how we live our lives today. Digital Ethnography comes with an exciting and inspiring range of case studies that demonstrate how thoroughly digitally mediated we are, and how previous methodological concepts can be adapted and applied. This book sets a benchmark for ensuring a truly unique approach to digital ethnography, in an age where 'the digital' has become second nature -- Adrienne Evans This is a delightful book - lively, engaging, challenging - providing us with the best available resource for exploring the exciting field of digital ethnography. It is an indispensable text for anyone interested in understanding the diversity and complexity of how the digital is woven into everyday life. -- Martin Hand The real strength of this book is that it is jam packed with good clear examples of research. It is not merely an exhortation to digital ethnography, it shows how much and how well this has already been carried out. The result is a powerful case for this approach as one of the best ways of gaining a properly informed, contextualized and conceptually grounded understanding of our new digital worlds. -- Daniel Miller New phenomena invite us to rethink our ways of knowing about the world and about ourselves - as researchers and participants in an increasingly digitally-mediated world. In an inspiring yet concrete way, this volume unfolds a new sensibility towards everyday life in a digital age. -- Sonia Livingstone This book brings together a hugely stimulating set of examples to inspire ethnographers working in contemporary media-saturated worlds. The pioneering authorial team use their wealth of material to great effect in outlining strategies ethnographers can use to develop theoretically rich insights into the digital. -- Christine Hine Filled with fascinating examples and clear theoretical perspectives, this refreshing book will be of great help for ethnographers as they strive to account for the many ways digital media shape and are shaped by everyday life. -- Nancy Baym

Kurzfassung: As the distinction between the digital and the material world becomes increasingly blurred, the ways in which we think about design are also shifting and evolving. How can the human, digital and material be brought together to intervene in the world? What constitutes our digital-material environments? How can we engage with digital technologies to make sustainable, healthy and meaningful decisions, both now and in the future? Digital Materialities presents twelve chapters by scholars and practitioners working at the intersection between design and digital research in the UK, Spain, Australia and the USA. By incorporating in-depth understandings of the digital-material world from both the social sciences and design, the book considers how this combined knowledge might advance our capacity to design for the future. Divided into three parts, the focus of the book moves from the theoretical to the practical: how different digital materialities are imagined and emerge, through software emulation, urban sensors and smart homes; how new digital designs are sparked through collaborations between social scientists and designers; and finally, how digital design emerges from the insider work of everyday designers. A fascinating, ground-breaking book for students and scholars of digital anthropology, media and communication, and anyone interested in the future of digital design.

Kurzfassung: Contemporary anthropology is done in a world where social and digital media are playing an increasingly significant role, where anthropological and arts practices are often intertwined in museum and public intervention contexts, and where anthropologists are encouraged to engage with mass media. Because anthropologists are often expected to and inspired to ensure their work engages with public issues, these opportunities to disseminate work in new ways and to new publics simultaneously create challenges as anthropologists move their practice into unfamiliar collaborative domains and expose their research to new forms of scrutiny. In this volume, contributors question whether a fresh public anthropology is emerging through these new practices.

Kurzfassung: Doing Sensory Ethnography responds to a recent an explosion of interest in the senses across the social sciences. In this important and groundbreaking book, Sarah Pink suggests re-thinking the ethnographic process through reflexive attention to what she terms the 'sensoriality' of the experience, practice, and knowledge of both researchers and those who participate in their research. The book provides an accessible analysis of the theoretical, methodological, and practical aspects of doing sensory ethnography, drawing on examples and case studies from the growing literature on sensory ethnographic studies and from the author's own work. Doing Sensory Ethnography is the first book to concentrate on outlining a sensory ethnographic methodology.

Kurzfassung: Visual methods such as drawing, painting, video, photography and hypermedia offer increasingly accessible and popular resources for ethnographic research. In Working Images, prominent visual anthropologists and artists explore how old and new visual media can be integrated into contemporary forms of research and representation. Drawing upon projects undertaken both 'at home' in their native countries and abroad in locations such as Ethopia and Venezuela, the book's contributors demonstrate how visual methods are used in the field, and how these methods can produce and communicate knowledge about our own and other cultures. As well as focusing on key issues such as ethics and the relationship between word and image, they emphasize the huge range of visual methods currently opening up new possibilities for field research, from cartoons and graphic art to new media such as digital video and online technologies.
