    Abstract: Eine Gegenüberstellung der unterschiedlichen traditionellen und modernen Kreativitätsformen von Brahmanen- und Harijan-Frauen vor dem Hintergrund ihres sozialen Entstehungsmilieus. Der Film ist ein Querschnitt aus den E-Filmen der Mithila-Serie.
    Abstract: The film shows scenes from the daily life of upper and lower social groups in the village of jitvarpur as well as the different artistic activities of Brahmin and of Harijan women. The film consists of extracts from different monographic films made in the village and presents a cross section of these films, an impressionistic succession of contrasted scenes.

    Abstract: Auf einem mittels einer rituellen Bodenzeichnung und Absteckung markierten Kultplatz im Innenhof seines Gehöftes führt der Hausherr unter Anleitung eines Brahmanen-Priesters eine Zeremonie zu Ehren der Gottheit Vishnu-Satyanarayan durch.
    Abstract: The rite shown in the film is performed in honour of the god Vishnu. The performance takes place in the courtyard of a Brahmin homestead, where a painting has been made on the ground to serve as an altar. Branches and garlands enclose the place of the ritual. The most important cult objects are a vase (kalasa) and a salagrama stone symbolizing the god Vishnu. Special locations are prepared for these objects: a platform of sand decorated with a ritual yantra painting for the cult vase and a board placed in the centre of painting altar for the brass vessel supporting the salagrama stone. The cult objects (upachara) are worshipped with specific materials fixed in number and in form: e. g. water, sandlewood, incense, floweers and leaves, essences, graines of rice, oil lamps, and gifts of food. The ritual is conducted by the priest, who gives instructions and recites texts. The ceremony being over, the gifts of food are divided among the participants.

    Abstract: Getrocknete Cannabis-Blätter werden mit Gewürzen und etwas Wasser zerstampft und unter Zugabe von Zuckerwasser durch ein Tuch gefiltert. Das Getränk wird vom Hersteller mit Gebetsformeln (Mantra) und Ritualgestik (Mudra) verehrt, danach getrunken.
    Abstract: The film shows two Brahmin brothers preparing the hashish drink bhang in the ritually fixed way. Leaves of Indian hemp (Cannabis), dried in the open air, are pounded in a stone mortar, with an admixture of water and seasonings, into a thick paste. Sugar is added and the paste is dissolved in water. The finished drink is worshipped with forms of prayer (mantra) and hand gestures (mudra). A part of the drink is given as an offering to a group of initiated Brahman boys. In an appendix the mudras are presented once more in detail.

    Abstract: Execution of two variants of ground paintings, locally known as ashtadal (octagon). The octagon is formed by two intersecting rectangles or squares. The centre of the octagon is reserved for the principal deity of the rite. The geometric octagon is extended with curved lines and formed into a stylized lotus-flower. Further motives are added, marking the location of the ritual objects or illustrating details of the ritual. Finally the white drawing, done with rice-flour mixed with water, is dotted with a red colouring-powder. The clayed ground of the courtyard of a homestead serves as base of the painting, smoothed and cleaned with water and cow-dung.

    Abstract: Two harijan women of the Dusadh group in their homesteads drawing and painting on paper. The painting were especially for this film and demonstrate the spontaneous creativeness of these women, working without any preparation. The first painting represents a meeting of men and women in the open air. Mats, recognizable by their zigzag pattern, are spread on the ground to sit upon. Round trays and the forms of banana leaves for placing the food, surrounded by vegetation motives, indicate a feast in the open air. The second woman's painting represents as principal motif two facing lines of men and womenm surrounded by animal and vegetation forms. It illustrates a traditional longways dance of Harijan women performed in the open air. The colours are applied in spots, without regard to the contour lines, in a rhythmic manner all over the paper surface. The products of this original naive painting suggest Western non-realistic art.

    Abstract: The traditional of ritual painting on walls and on the earth is the basis of the development of commercial painting on paper. One of the most gifted and patronized painters of the younger generation, Baua Devi, is painting, especially for this film, an image of Krishna, her favourite god. The execution of the figure adheres to a traditional scheme regulating the sequence of painting, which also characterizes mural painting. A dried grass-stalk is used for drawing, dried stalks wrapped with cotton wool for colouring. The painter begins by drawing a border on the paper surface; she finishes the painting by drawing the god's eye.

Seine Frau verwendet diese Fäden zur Herstellung von Blütenketten, die, in Blätter verpackt, im Dorf ausgetragen werden für die täglichen Hausriten. Der Mali legt Blüten und Blütenketten am Altar der eigenen Hausgottheit nieder.
    Abstract: Ramphal Bhandari, member of the traditional Mali caste of ornamental gardeners and garland makers, making threads from banana fibres. At the following day the Mali's wife uses the dried fibre threads to make garlands of flowers. She strings flowers on to the threads and ties them into chains of flowers. She makes three kinds of garlands, each by a different technique. To keep them fresh, she sprinkles the garlands with water, then she wraps them, together with some flowers, in large leaves of the castor-oil plant. The parcels are distributed by her son to the households of the village, where they are used in the daily domestic rite. To demonstrate the use of the flowers and garlands, the woman also hands flowers and a garland placed on a leaf to her husband, the Mali. The Mali takes them and performs with them a short ceremony on the veranda of his house, the place for worshipping Bhairava, one of the five house gods.

    Abstract: Two brothers, priests of the temple, assisted by the younger brother's son, carrying aout their morning acitivities. The elder brother, seated on a wooden bedsted on the veranda of the temple, is praying his daily mantras. In each hand he holds a chaplet, the right hand hidden in a prayer-bag. The younger brother is seated near the temple entrance on the veranda, painting on hand-made paper a Durga-yantra for sale. His activity represents a modern phenomenon: the secularization of traditional ritual diagrams for commercial purposes, occuring since the beginning of the seventues because of a worldwide market for tantric art. In front of the temple, at the ancestral graves, the younger brother's son is performing, with flowers and water, the daily rite for the ancestors. At the end of the ceremony he walks round the graves from the right to the left, then he returns to the temple.

    Abstract: The garland maker (Mali) Ramphal Bhandari makes paper-thin strips from the root fibres of the aquatic plant kodhila. The Mali then ties the strips into round tufts or pompons (geni) suspended as decoration in religious ceremonies. The second part of the film shows the Mali making a jhanp, a temple-shaped miniature baldachin suspended over a place of worship.

    Abstract: Auf die Außenwände der beiden Lehmhäuser in ihrem Gehöft malt Baua Devi die Gottheiten Kali, Durga, Ganesa und Hanuman. Zum Malen verwendet sie rotbraune Erdfarbe, aus Holzkohle angeriebene schwarze Farbe und gekaufte rote Pulverfarbe, die sie mit Milch und flüssigem Leim anrührt, sowie Wattestäbchen. =e The Brahmin woman Baua Devi paints on the wall of the two mud-houses of her homestead the deities Kali, Durga, Ganesa, and Hanuman. She uses reddish-brown ochre, a black colour made of ground charcoal and a purchased red powder all mixed with milk and liquid glue as well as reed-stalks wrapped with cotton wool.

    Abstract: Aus Myrtenblättern wird eine Paste angerieben, mit der sich Durga Kumari eine Symbolzeichnung auf ihre linke Handinnenfläche aufträgt. Nach mehrstündiger Trockenzeit entfernt sie die Masse, und die Zeichnung steht rot auf der Hand eingegerbt.
    Abstract: The film shows the sixteen-year-old Durga Kumari decorating her hand with a mehndi painting. Her mother, Bhagvati Devi, prepares the mehndi paste. On a grinding-stone she grinds mehndi leaves, gathered by the girl in the garden near the house, into a fine paste. As tannic acid she adds the juice of a small lemon, to regulate the humidity, small pieces of a dried grass-blade. With the paste Durga Kumari draws a small square in the middle of the inner surface of her left hand. This square, which can be interpreted as a centre of magic power is extended with curved lines and formed into a stylized lotus-flower. Fingers and nails are decorated too with mehndi. Only the nail of the middle finger (in other cases the whole middle finger) is not painted: this finger symbolizes the brother and decorating it would bring harm to the brother. The mehndi is left on the hand for several hours, then the dried paste is removed and the hand is washed. There remains a red painting absorbed into the skin shich will keep for several weeks.

    Abstract: Mit selbstgefertigter weißer Farbpaste aus Reismehl fertigt Baua Devi eine Bodenzeichnung in Form eines Achtecks im Lotos. Die Ritualzeichnung wird mit roten Farbtupfen belebt und dient als Bodenaltar für Hausriten.
    Abstract: Aripan is the name of ritual floorpaintings at Mithila. The paintings serve as an altar for the performance of domestic rites of the life and calendar cycles. One of the basic motifs of these paintings is the octagon (ashtadal), associated chiefly with the worship of Lakshmi and Narayan. The ground on which the painting will be made is smoothed and cleaned with water and cow-dung. The lines are then traced with the fingers on the base, the material used is a paste of rice-flour and water (pithar). Two intersecting rectangles are drawn first, forming the octagon ashtadal. The square centre of the octagon is the holy space reserved for the divinity depicted therein in figurative outlines. The octagon is extended with curved lines and formed into an expanding lotus-flower. Finally, dots of red colour powder are added to the design. The rite for which the painting has been made will be performed the very same day.
