Abstract: "In science, race can be a useful concept-for specific, limited purposes. When race, as a way of classifying people, is drafted into the service of politics, religion, or any belief system, then danger follows. That is the focus of this classic repudiation of racism, which is as readable and timely now as when it first appeared. Race: Science and Politics was first published in 1940, in response to the global rise of fascism and its pseudoscientific rationales for marginalizing and even exterminating "inferior" people. Writing for a general audience, Ruth Benedict ranges across the history of Western thought and research on race to illuminate rifts between the facts of race and the claims of racism. Rather than take issue only with the Nazis and their allies, Benedict set out to show that all racist beliefs are objectively groundless-and that is the key to the book's ongoing relevance. The book's bonus content includes The Races of Mankind, a pamphlet-length distillation of the book with its own controversial role in dismantling racist theory. This edition also includes a new foreword by Judith Schachter. An anthropologist, historian, and Benedict biographer, Schachter discusses the book's importance for current readers. Also included is a foreword by anthropologist Margaret Mead from 1958, a time when colonial ties around the world were unravelling and civil rights unrest was a daily occurrence in the United States"--

Abstract: "This text has been written rather compactly. It aims to present a clear, matter-of-fact and concise statement of general principles of psychology (as a study of mental activities) with just enough illustrative material to enable the student to comprehend those principles. This mode of presentation presumes that the text will be used as a basis for class discussion, and that it will need to be supplemented with a considerable amount of exposition and illustration by the instructor. In other words, the use of the text presupposes a teacher rather than a mere quizmaster"--Preface. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)

Abstract: The Omaha collection covers a variety of cultural, historical and environmental information on different sections of Omaha society from pre-contact times to early 2000s. The work of Alice Fletcher, an anthropologist who lived with the Omaha for thirty years in 1875-1905, and Francis La Flesche, a native Omaha, is the basic and most comprehensive document in the collection. The collection also includes two works by a missionary/anthropologist, James Dorsey, who worked among the Omaha in 1878-1980. Together, these works provide the earliest systematic attempts at understanding and reconstructing pre-reservation Omaha society and culture. The remaining documents describe and examine more specific aspects of Omaha culture including acculturation with particular reference to women, religious life and organization of secret societies, and recent dynamics of ethnicity and identity especially among current generation Omaha peoples in Nebraska

Abstract: This collection about the Samoans consists of 15 documents and a culture summary, covering a wide variety of cultural and historical information from the1830s to the 1990s. The Samoans are Polynesian people who live on a group of small islands in the Central Pacific which constitute the territories of American Samoa and (since 1962) the independent state of Western Samoa. The earliest descriptions of Samoan culture and history were compiled by the missionaries John B. Stair and George Turner, who lived in different parts of the island from 1838-1945 and 1840-1880, respectively. Five documents are ethnographic accounts and essays by Margaret Mead who, in 1925-1928, lived among Samoans villagers mostly in the Manuan group of islands in American Samoa. One document revisits some of the major arguments advanced in Mead's works, notably her portrayal of adolescent Samoan girls as sexually permissive. The remaining seven documents in the collection further enrich the historical and cultural information on Samoa with additional themes and in-depth analysis including plant resources and indigenous botanical knowledge, traditional material culture, a socio-political analysis of the modern history of American and Western Samoa, post-war reconstruction of Western Samoa, material culture and social change, structures and processes in the Western Samoan Sala'ilua village, and recent changes in the economic options of households and individuals in Vaega and Neiafu villages in Western Samoa

Abstract: This collection of 14 documents describes the Manus people during the period from 1870 to 1992, with a concentration on the 1920s. The Manus are residents of the Papua New Guinea province of Manus. The American anthropologist Margaret Mead (1901-1978) conducted fieldwork on the island from 1928-1929 and again in 1953. This collection contains several her works, including her main monographs on personality development and a follow-up study, 25 years later, on the same subject. The other works by Mead in this collection focus on kinship, animism and children's thought, trade and exchange, and a general introduction to Manus culture and society. Fortune wrote on the Manus religion. Carrier and Schwartz wrote on the Manus economy. Gustafsson wrote his doctoral dissertation on Manus leadership. Otto examines the life of one particular leader, Paliau Maloat, and the history of the movement he led. Romanucci-Ross examines Manus medical treatment

Abstract: "Few anthropologists today realize the pioneering role Margaret Mead played in the investigation of contemporary cultures. This volume collects and presents a variety of her essays on research methodology relating to contemporary culture. Many of these essays were printed originally in limited circulation journals, research reports and books edited by others. They reflect Mead's continuing commitment to searching out methods for studying and extending the anthropologist's tools of investigation for use in complex societies. Essays on American and European societies, intergenerational relations, architecture and social space, industrialization, and interracial relations are included in this collection."--BOOK JACKET

Abstract: Margaret Mead wrote this comprehensive sketch of the culture of the United States - the first since de Tocqueville - in 1942 at the beginnning of the Second World War, when Americans were confronted by foreign powers from both Europe and Asia in a particularly challenging manner. Mead's work became an instant classic. It was required reading for anthropology students for nearly two decades, and was widely translated. It was revised and expanded in 1965 for a second generation of readers. Among the more controversial conclusions of her analysis are the denial of class as a motivating force in American culture, and her contention that culture is the primary determinant for individual character formation. Her process remains lucid, vivid, and arresting. As a classic study of a complex western society, it remains a monument to anthropological analysis.

Abstract: "In 1936 anthropologist Margaret Mead and her husband, Gregory Bateson, retreated from lowland Bali, which was the focal point of much scholarly and tourist activity, to the remote village of Bayung Gede in the island's central highlands. They wrote relatively little about their work in this place, which Mead called "our village, way up in the mountains, a lovely self-contained village," but they did leave behind a remarkably rich and extensive photographic record of their time there." "Margaret Mead, Gregory Bateson, and Highland Bali includes 200 photographs that the couple took between 1936 and 1939, the vast majority of which have never before been published. They vividly capture the everyday lives of the men, women, and children of Bayung Gede, their homes, the temples in and around the community, and many other fascinating details of village life not featured in Mead and Bateson's publications." "In a substantial introductory essay, Gerald Sullivan, who selected the photographs, uses excerpts from fieldnotes and correspondence to illuminate Mead and Bateson's ethnographic work."--BOOK JACKET.
