    Abstract: Die Gewinnung von Torfkohle im Meilerbrand für Schmiedezwecke spielte bis zum Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts in den großen Moorgebieten an der deutsch-dänischen Grenze bei Bramstedtlund eine erhebliche wirtschaftliche Rolle. Der Altbauer und Amtsschreiber H. C. Davidsen, der 1924 den letzten Meilerbrand durchgeführt hatte, zeigt noch einmal an einem kleinen Meiler, wie die Arbeit vonstatten ging: Gewinnung von Grasplaggen, Anzünden des Feuers, Aufschütten des trockenen Torfs zum Meiler über dem Feuer, Abdecken des in Glut stehenden Meilers mit Grasplaggen und Sand, nach ca. 4 Wochen Öffnen des Meilers und Entnahme der Torfkohle.
    Abstract: The production of charcoal from peat for use in the metal industry played a significant part in the local economy around the peat-bogs on the German-danish border around Bramstedtlund until the end of the 19th century. In 1924 H. C. Davidsen was the last to use this process. Here he demonstrates again the making of grass sods, lighting the fire, placing dried peat on the fire, covering with grass sods and sand to make a kiln and, 4 weeks later, removing the cover and excavating the charcoal.

    Abstract: Heringszäune sind große, aus Buschholz gebaute Reusenanlagen zum Fang von Heringen, die im Frühjahr zum Laichen flußaufwärts ziehen. In der Schlei, einem 30 km langen, fjordartigen Gewässer, gab es im Mittelalter über 60 Heringszäune. Heute ist nur noch einer bei Kappeln erhalten. Der Film zeigt den Bau dieses Zaunes anstelle eines älteren zerstörten und das Abfischen der Heringe.
    Abstract: Herring weirs are large permeable dams made from young branches to catch herring when they migrate upriver in spring. The Schlei is a 30 km long creek where, in the middle ages, over 60 weirs were placed. The film shows the replacement of a damaged fence in the single remaining weir at Kappeln as well as the method of herring fishing.

    Abstract: "Nadelbindung" ist eine weitverbreitete frühgeschichtlich-mittelalterliche Schlingennähtechnik zur Herstellung von Fäustlingen, Strümpfen, Kappen und ähnlichen Erzeugnissen. Sie ist heute nur noch in Skandinavien bekannt. Aber auch der 90jährige Altbauer A. Meyer, der diese Technik von seinem 1820 geborenen Großvater gelernt hatte, beherrschte sie noch. So entstand ein Film, in dem gezeigt wird, wie ein Handschuh aus Wollgarn in Nadelbindung angefertigt wird.
    Abstract: Looped Needle-netting Technique "Nadelbindung" was an extensively used in the production of mittens, socks caps etc in the early middle ages. Today this technique is only known in scandinavia. The 90 year-old A. Meyer learnt this technique from his grandfather (born 1820) and demonstrates the making of a mitten using woollen yarn and looped needle-netting technique.

    Abstract: In einen großen Granitblock wird entlang einer Markierungslinie mit Meißel und Spitzhammer eine Reihe kleiner, schmaler Keillöcher geschlagen. Mit Hilfe kleiner Eisenkeile, die mit leichten Schlägen in die Löcher getrieben werden, wird der Block der Länge nach in zwei Teile aufgespalten. Das schmalere Stück soll ein Hecktorpfosten werden.
    Abstract: A row of small narrow wedge-holes is carved with chisel and pick-hammer along a marking-line into a big granite-block. By means of small iron-wedges, which are driven into the holes by light blows, the block is driven apart in two long pieces. The narrow one is supposed to become a gate-post for a fence.

    Abstract: Eine hohe Eiche wird gefällt, abgelängt, mit einer Hebelade verladen und zur Stellmacherei gebracht. Der 5 m lange Stamm wird mit Axt und Breitbeil achtkantig behauen und dann mit Hilfe eines handgetriebenen Pumpenbohrgerätes, das auf einer Gleitbahn vor- und zurückrollt, erst von einem, dann vom anderen Ende her gebohrt, bis die Bohrungen sich in der Mitte treffen. Anschließend werden ca. 2 m am oberen Ende für den Pumpenkolben weiter aufgebohrt.
    Abstract: Boring of an oak-trunk to be used as a pump. A high oaktree is felled, cut to length, loaded on a wagon by means of a lever-chest and taken to the cartwrights-yard. The 5 m long trunk is trimmed octogonal with axe and broad-axe and then bored lengthwise by a handdriven boringdevice (machine), which runs forth and back on a guideway. Boring starts from one end to about half the length of the trunk, then from the other end, until both boreholes meet. Finally the upper two metres of the trunk are rebored for the pumppiston.

    Abstract: Zwei Pferdegespanne werden vor einen eisernen Pflug gespannt. Auf dem hinteren Sattelpferd reitet der Treiber, der Pflüger geht hinter dem Pflug. Gezeigt wird die Technik des "Auseinanderpflügens" auf einem ca. 16 m breiten und ca. 200 m langen Ackerstück in den holsteinischen Elbmarschen.

    Abstract: A small farmer, who does not own a milking-machine as yet, and his wife are milking their cows by hand. Two different milking-techniques are shown. The fresh milk is strained into 20 litre cans and carried home on bicycles.

    Abstract: Ein kleiner, alter Kiefernholz-Hängeschrank erhält eine neue Bemalung, die eine Eichenholzmaserung imitiert. Dazu werden insgesamt fünf Farbschichten (erste und zweite Grundierung, Öllasur, Wasserlasur und Klarlack) aufgetragen. Die beiden Lasuren werden mit verschiedenen Maseriergeräten bearbeitet, um einen Eichenholz-Masereffekt zu erzielen.
    Abstract: A small old wall-cabinet gets a new painting imitating oak-grain. Five coats of paint have to be applied: first and second ground coat, oilglaze, water-glaze and clear varnish. Both glazes are treated with several veining-utensils in order obtain an oakwoodgrain effect.

Um Stämme, Vorder- und Hinterwagen fest miteinander zu verbinden, werden drei Eisenketten darumgeschlungen.
    Abstract: Three straight logs are lifted at their bottom ends by means of the timber lifting jack. When they are high enough, the force-carriage of a farm wagon is pushed underneath and the load is lowered on to the pillow of the carriage. Then the top ends of the logs are lifted in the same way, the rear-carriage is pushed under the load and the timber lifting jack is moved away. In order to secure the logs safely to the wagon during transport three iron chains are fastened around the load.

    Abstract: Das Drehen der zweiadrigen Bänder aus Riedgras (Carex) für eine Stuhlbespannung wird ohne Werkzeuge nur durch die Reibbewegung der Handflächen durchgeführt. Das Beflechten der Sitzfläche eines Vierpfostenstuhles, eines bäuerlichen Armlehnstuhles von trapezförmigem Grundriß, erfolgt von den Rändern zur Mitte hin wachsend. Die Bespannung besteht aus drei Schichten mit diagonal verlaufenden Überkreuzungen, die den Eindruck eines Geflechts erweckt, obwohl die Bänder nur nebeneinander gelegt und umeinander geführt werden.

    Abstract: Repairing of a damaged part of the lower dike slope caused by a storm tide. First the egdes of the damaged part are cut smooth and rectangular and the whole surface is made flat. Then sods are pared from the dike foreland with a sodding plough and a draw shovel and the damaged part is carefully filled in with them. Finally the repaired part is "sticked" with reed.

    Abstract: Zwei Schnitter arbeiten von rechts nach links gestaffelt hintereinander. Mit der Sichel in der rechten Hand werden einige Stengel zusammengerafft und von der linken ergriffen. Dann folgt das Abschneiden durch einen ziehenden Schnitt in Kniehöhe. Drei bis vier Schnitte ergeben eine Handvoll, diese wird auf den hohen Stoppeln abgelegt. Drei bis vier Handvoll bilden einen Lopp.

Then the cut is processed at knee-height in a drawing movement. Three or four cuts make up a handful which is laid on the high stubbles.
