Abstract: This glossy, fully illustrated book looks at the period between the 8th and the 13th Centuries, when the Chola dynasty was the dominant cultural, religious, and political force in Southern India. The most spectacular elements of the dynasty's artistic legacy are its bronze representations of Shiva and other Hindu gods. This lavishly illustrated book presents nearly thirty of these exquisite works - cast bronze sculptures from the region in the far South of India known as Tamil Nadu. They date from the period 850-1250. Many such works continue to be worshipped in the temples for which they were originally commissioned, in some cases over 1,000 years ago. Expert authors explore how and why the figures came to be made and examine the role they played within Hinduism and Chola culture. Sumptuous full-page illustrations and numerous details reveal the bronzes' sensuous beauty, which will be a revelation to a Western Audience. Contents: President's Foreword; Map; 1. Parading the Gods: Bronze Devotional Images of Chola South India by John Guy; 2. Beauty and the Body of God by Vidya Dehejia; 3. Looking at Chola Bronzes by John Eskenazi; Catalogue by Vidya Dehejia: 1. Shiva and His Imagery; 2. Shiva Saints; 3. Vishnu and His Imagery; 4. The Jain Faith; Appendix A: The Vikramacholanula: A Chola Processional Poem; Appendix B: The Dance of Shiva by Auguste Rodin; Glossary of Terms by John Guy; List of Works; Lenders to the Exhibition; Photographic Acknowledgements; Index
