Abstract: Known worldwide for its pioneering fieldwork, the Penn Museum surprises the visitor with its beautiful building, extensive collections, and impressive exhibitions. Since its founding in 1887, the Museum's building has continued to grow and evolve, and so have its displays. Their new archival exhibition, currently on display through July, 2017 at the Museum, invites people to travel through time with these ever-changing spaces. Here, Pezzati reveals how Penn Museum's taste and design have changed.

Abstract: Col Percy H. Fawcett, born in 1867 in Devon England, led seven successful expeditions to the Amazon between 1906 and 1924. Fawcett was known for his respect for native people. He was also a Spiritualist who had come to imagine an advanced urban civilization deep in the Amazon jungle, possibly with ties to Atlantis. His last trip, made with his eldest son and his son's best friend, was to discover such a city. However, after one last message on May 29, 1925, in which Fawcett told of preparing to enter uncharted territory, they disappeared without a trace. Pezzati recalls the Penn Museum's own Matto Grosso Expedition to investigate the disappearance of Fawcett.

Abstract: Henry Usher Hall (1876-1944), Curator of the General Ethnology Section from 1915 to 1935, undertook two expeditions for the Penn Museum in dramatically distinct areas of the world: he was in Siberia in 1914-1915, at the beginning of his career, and in Sierra Leone, West Africa, in 1936-1937, at the end of it. Here, Africa's baked banana recipe on 1937 is detailed.

Abstract: Pezzati talks about the Harrison Rotunda. The lower chamber of the Rotunda consists of an auditorium seating 800 people. A monumental domed ceiling with a bronze sunburst at its center illuminates the Harrison Auditorium. Two features made it the talk of the town in 1915: it had a system to purify and circulate air, and the masonry construction techniques permitted a pillar-free space, offering unobstructed views anywhere within the auditorium.

Abstract: The 1876 Centennial International Exposition in Philadelphia--the first world's fair held in the US--was an international success and demonstrated the rising prominence of the US in the world. The intellectual fervor of the time eventually led to the founding of the Penn Museum in 1887, the first global institution at Penn. The Museum made the world its purview, and its field research program distinguished it among its peers. Here, Pezzati details Penn Museum's collections and achievements.

Abstract: In January 1905, photographer Jessie Tarbox Beals stopped at the Penn Museum on a tour of East Coast cities. She hoped to sell a set of ethnographic portraits taken at the Louisiana Purchase Exposition, held the year before in St Louis. George Byron Gordon, then Assistant Curator of General Ethnology, had attended the Fair. The wide range of people who had been brought there--from Eskimo to Filipino to Patagonian--had attracted his attention, and be purchased 243 black-and-white photographs from Beals. Sadly, over the years, these prints were used in exhibits and for educational purposes, and only 81 flow remain in the Archives. Here, Pizzati features the world's fair photographer Beals.
