Abstract: Building a successful product usually involves teams of people, and many choose the Scrum approach to aid in creating products that deliver the highest possible value. Implementing Scrum gives teams a collection of powerful ideas they can assemble to fit their needs and meet their goals. The ninety-four patterns contained within are elaborated nuggets of insight into Scrum’s building blocks, how they work, and how to use them. They offer novices a roadmap for starting from scratch, yet they help intermediate practitioners fine-tune or fortify their Scrum implementations. Experienced practitioners can use the patterns and supporting explanations to get a better understanding of how the parts of Scrum complement each other to solve common problems in product development. The patterns are written in the well-known Alexandrian form, whose roots in architecture and design have enjoyed broad application in the software world. The form organizes each pattern so you can navigate directly to organizational design tradeoffs or jump to the solution or rationale that makes the solution work. The patterns flow together naturally through the context sections at their beginning and end. Learn everything you need to know to master and implement Scrum one step at a time—the agile way.

Abstract: Defining and reducing the carbon footprint of a new or refurbished building can be a daunting task. There are lots of tools to measure the environmental impact of buildings, but they all measure energy and CO2 in different ways, and they do not measure the whole carbon footprint. What Colour is your Building? provides practical and pragmatic guidance on how to calculate and then compare the whole carbon footprint of buildings using one simple method looking at operating, embodied and transport energy. It will equip designers, building owners, occupiers, planners and policy makers with the tools and knowledge that they will need to make decisions early on about where the big impacts will be in terms of reducing the carbon footprint of the building, including: A new, simple approach to understanding the whole carbon impact of buildings Benchmarking data for operating energy performance A clear, transparent method of separating landlord energy performance from tenant energy performance Simple diagrams and numbers to put renewable energy into perspective.

Abstract: Economic growth and rising levels of consumption in developing and developed countries has been observed as being deeply coupled with natural resource usage and material consumption. The increasing need for natural resources has raised concerns regarding issues such as resource scarcity, undesirable environmental impacts due to material extraction, primary production, and suboptimal product disposal, and social or political tensions. Product End-of-Life (EoL) options, such as reusing or recycling, attempt to limit or reduce the amount of waste sent to a landfill, providing strategic means to decouple the link between economic growth and resource usage. These EoL options have the potential to close material loops, further utilizing wastes as resources, reducing environmental impacts, conserving natural resources, reducing material prices, and providing job opportunities in developing countries. Remanufacturing, on the other hand, is a unique EoL option due to increasing the number of life cycles of a product before final disposal. First, recurring environmental benefits, such as emission and raw material extraction avoidance are obtained with each additional product life cycle. Second, individual resource efficiency yields increase through product remanufacture. Resource efficiency or, using more with less will continue to compound with each additional life cycle. Third, recirculating products decreases the demand and dependency for primary resource production, further closing the material loop and creating a more circular economy. In addition, remanufacturing can initiate more preferable EoL options such as recovery, recycling, and waste reduction. While remanufacturing offers numerous benefits, there is significant lack of literature and books covering the fundamentals of operations, technologies and business models. The proposed book will provide in-depth coverage of remanufacturing fundamentals and its strong link to circular economy and resource efficiency.

Abstract: Retrofit for Purpose examines a range of state-of-the-art non-domestic retrofit projects. Its chapters explore common challenges, offer practical solutions and provide a clarion-call to architects and clients for better, smarter retrofit. Twelve case studies focus as much on the transformation of usability and image as on the improvements in the energy and resource use of non-domestic buildings. While an essay section places these projects into a wider context, suggesting that despite the importance of sharing and analysing data, there is more to retrofit than just energy efficiency. The authors take a range of other retrofit variables: from client ambition to tenure, budget, use type, age, context, fashion and fiscal arrangements and assess how retrofit can be made affordable, how it fits in with wider government policy and how performance can be measured.

Abstract: Despite co-ordination being the principal focus of the Lead Designer’s role, there is very little written about how to undertake these duties. What tools can the Lead Designer use to address the many complexities of developing a design as part of an iterative process? How can the Lead Designer redefine what they do using a digital world to provide profoundly different and new services? This book analyses at all of these questions, setting out how the Lead Designer can perform effectively and efficiently in the digital world, addressing clients’ new whole life project requirements and new ways of constructing and assembling buildings. Managing increasing numbers of specialists in the construction process requires experience to ensure that their contributions are properly managed and produced at the right time. This book considers this challenge. It will also consider how the Lead Designer can effectively lead and manage health and safety aspects and risks (the principal designer role in UK regulations).

Abstract: Communication has become one of the most puzzling paradoxes of our time. We live in a world that is hyper-connected; more plugged in, tuned in and turned on than ever before. Yet, social science confirms that more and more people feel isolated and disconnected from their communities and families. They feel overworked, underpaid, misunderstood and alone. This book is a fresh approach to tackle modern communication challenges, written for today's time poor reader; easily consumed in one sitting (one flight), or one night! This book is a holistic approach to professional and personal communication that will be a significant support in the boardroom, the living room and also the classroom. Despite the capability to be 'in touch' 24/7, many people are disengaged and disillusioned. Business leaders know the struggle to engage and empower a workforce that clocks in, then checks out. Parents know the challenges to connect with teenagers who text better than they talk! And how do you answer the most challenging question every partner dreads: "If you loved me you would know what's wrong?" These are all painful experiences that this book delivers proactive solutions to connect (and protect) these important relationships through better communication. This is vital if you are a business leader, parent or in a loving relationship. This book is a 'map for leaders' who want to harness the power of communication to influence their projects, their ideas, their teams and clients; for parents that seek better relationships with their kids and or loved ones. In this book you will discover in seven easy to read chapters: Compelling reasons to get great at communicating. A path to incredible personal growth.

Abstract: BIM Demystified is a short, practical introduction to Building Information Modelling (BIM). Addressing BIM from the point of view of mainstream practice as opposed to a cutting-edge technological perspective, it offers a user-friendly yet thorough explanation of a subject which is often swamped by jargon and deluged with spin. Taking a wide view of BIM – encompassing business opportunity, Code of Conduct, cultural issues and the necessity for better legal arrangements too – the book’s chapters range from the BIM ingredients (including objects, parametrics, and standards), to the business case for BIM and how to implement it. BIM requires a shift in attitudes if its benefits are to be obtained – and this book will allow individuals at all levels in any practice to build a firmer understanding of the merits and wider application of the subject. It brings together both managers and technologists within businesses throughout the AECC chain to form better and more valuable propositions for built environment interventions.

Abstract: There are over half a million listed buildings in Britain, conservation areas can be found in every borough, and a large proportion of our housing stock pre-dates 1914. So, whether in extending a listed house, reordering a local church, or converting an historic warehouse, most architects will work with historic buildings at some point in their career – even if they are not a specialist conservation architect. An Introduction to Architectural Conservation introduces non-specialist architects to the principles behind legislation concerning historic buildings. It will help them understand the practicalities of this legislation, the aims and objectives of Conservation Offices, Statutory Amenity Societies and other guardians of our heritage. With these skills, readers can advise clients more accurately, make successful listed building applications, and ensure their interventions are sensitive, appropriate and effective. An Introduction to Architectural Conservation is also a practical guide to good working practice: taking readers through the process of preparing a listed building application, preparing a suitable tender package and administering the contract. .

Abstract: Managing Knowledge in Project Environments illustrates how knowledge management (KM) contributes to successful project work. KM is widely practised in project environments, but managers don’t always recognise the knowledge aspects of their work and tend to treat KM as a series of specific activities rather than a way of making project work produce better outcomes in different contexts. To overcome this challenge, the authors present KM as an integral part of project work and explain it using principles: KM fundamentals that apply anywhere. A series of context factors provides readers with a framework for understanding and thinking about what KM means for their context: their goals, their projects, their organisations and their working environments. Hidden KM is exposed, myths are debunked and practical guidance explains how to build KM into projects and portfolios. The approach is consistent with current guidance including the BS ISO management systems standard for KM and the seventh edition of APM’s ‘Body of knowledge’. The aim is to help project professionals, sponsors, PMO members and others who can make a difference manage knowledge more effectively in project environments. Managing Knowledge in Project Environments offers everyone involved in project work a definitive short guide to the subject.

Abstract: The built environment has the potential to have a major impact on biodiversity, not least with the increasingly demanding requirements to design more energy efficient and airtight buildings, leaving less space for species to inhabit. The construction industry has an important role to play in ensuring that buildings are designed and refurbished in a way in which biodiversity can be enhanced. Through written guidance and architectural drawings, this book advises on how to incorporate provision for biodiversity within developments. With sections on different building-reliant species, general principles for design, ready-made products that be incorporated into designs, and legislation, policy and regulations, this book is an invaluable resource for all architects, ecologists and anyone involved in designing or briefing for biodiversity in buildings.

Abstract: Scientific research uses concepts (or constructs) and requires means to measure them. Often latent, abstract and not directly observable, these concepts demand special attention. When facing problems related to their operationalization, considerable efforts are required to construe measures that effectively represent the phenomena studied. Measurement in Marketing presents a wide range of ideas to help researchers in the selection, design and validation of measurements of constructs. It analyzes the provisions that must be implemented to allow the transition from a latent conceptual construct to an operational level close to reality, and thus to make possible a fluid, reliable and valid reading of the phenomena observed. This instructive book guides readers through all stages of the implementation of a measure. It is intended for a wide audience, offering examples, summary tables and boxes in order to emphasize the primary information.

Abstract: A groundbreaking approach to unlocking the power of energy for professional productivity and business success The Energy Equation provides a new approach to achieving marketplace success by leveraging the internal workings of your business. The energy of your business is part of a physical system. Just like any other form of energy, it can be drained and wasted or be harnessed and optimized. This book offers a revolutionary contribution to management science that can be used to drive change, improve collaboration, enhance performance, strengthen organizational health and agility, and much more. Author Greg Baker, CEO of Advance Consulting—a leading management consulting and professional development firm specializing in the transformation of people, teams, and organizations—shows you how to use “enterprise” energy to dramatically increase professional productivity and enhance business performance. The Energy Equation teaches you how to “see” the energy of your company, enabling you to understand why some things work and others don’t. The traditional “surface-level management” model no longer works in the 21st century; a much deeper view is needed. The Energy Equation will help you unlock the hidden power of energy in your business: Eliminate unnecessary conflict that saps the energy of your business Build business agility, boost employee engagement, and establish a positive culture throughout your organization Optimize your daily business, manage change, and prepare for the future of work View your business through the lens of energy to see what is really happening beneath the surface The Energy Equation is a powerful resource for any person or business seeking to adapt and thrive in the challenging global business environment.

Abstract: Revisiting Postmodernism offers an engaging, wide-ranging and highly illustrated account of postmodernism in architecture from its roots in the 1940s to its ongoing relevance today. This book invites readers to see Postmodernism in a new light: not just a style but a cultural phenomenon that embraces all areas of life and thrives on complexity and pluralism, in contrast to the strait-laced, single-style, top-down inclination of its predecessor, Modernism. While focusing on architecture, this book also explores aspects such as urban masterplanning, furniture design, art and literature. Looking at Postmodernism through the lens of examples from around the world, each chapter explores the movement in the UK on the one hand, and its international counterparts on the other, reflecting on the historical movement but also how postmodernism influences practices today. This book offers the insider’s view on postmodernism by the author, a recognised pioneer in the field of postmodern architecture and a prestigious and authoritative participant in the postmodern movement.

Abstract: The ultimate playbook for using artificial intelligence to communicate effectively, build teams, and win customers Not long ago, we imagined a hyper-connected world full of trust and openness—a world where effortless communication would bring about a new understanding between people everywhere. Judging from our current environment, this vision of the future may have been overly optimistic. With infinite channels and countless voices flooding them with messages, most people have become highly skeptical and guarded by necessity. As a result, communication is much harder than ever before. Despite the unprecedented connectivity enabled by modern technology, we are far less likely to trust and to invest the time needed to build strong relationships. How can we use technology to reverse this trend? A groundbreaking new branch of artificial intelligence—Personality AI—may be the answer. Combining traditional machine learning, data analytics, and behavioral psychology, Personality AI helps professional communicators tear down walls, establish trust with their audiences, and utilize data to build meaningful relationships, strengthen empathy, and win more customers. Predicting Personality is a practical, real-world playbook for any individual or business whose success hinges on the ability to communicate effectively and build teams. Authors Drew D’Agostino and Greg Skloot—CEO and President, respectively, of Crystal, the app that tells you anyone's personality—show you how businesses can leverage Personality AI and machine learning to grow faster and communicate more effectively than was previously possible. This reader-friendly guide teaches you what Personality AI is, how it works, and demonstrates its practical applications in both life and business. This book: ● Explains how to understand personality types in various contexts, including sales, recruiting, coaching ● Provides guidelines for using personality data to learn and execute ● Explores ethics and compliance considerations surrounding the use of Personality AI ● Offers valuable insights from a leader in the business applications of Personality AI Predicting Personality: Using AI to Understand People and Win More Business is a must-have guide for C-suite executives, sales and marketing professionals, coaches, recruiters, and business owners.

Abstract: The office is dead. Long live the office. Despite decades of predictions that the office is on the verge of extinction, it is surviving and thriving. Of course, things are changing. And changing fast. Digital technologies are transforming not only the work we do, but also the ways our workplaces are designed, built and operated. Automation and AI mean that some jobs will no longer exist whilst others will be created. But the very essence of the workplace — human interaction and collaboration, remains as necessary as ever. In fact, it is the human focus that is driving this new age, with four generations now in the workplace together for the first time. Taking an interdisciplinary approach, this book discusses the impacts of these changes on the future of work and workplace. The latest technologies are also explored from voice and digital twins, to new materials such as graphene and battery-powered buildings.

Abstract: How the world has become much better and why optimism is abundantly justified Why do so many people fear the future? Is their concern justified, or can we look forward to greater wealth and continued improvement in the way we live? Our world seems to be experiencing stagnant economic growth, climatic deterioration, dwindling natural resources, and an unsustainable level of population growth. The world is doomed, they argue, and there are just too many problems to overcome . But is this really the case? In Fewer, Richer, Greener , author Laurence B. Siegel reveals that the world has improved —and will continue to improve—in almost every dimension imaginable. This practical yet lighthearted book makes a convincing case for having gratitude for today’s world and optimism about the bountiful world of tomorrow. Life has actually improved tremendously. We live in the safest, most prosperous time in all human history. Whatever the metric—food, health, longevity, education, conflict—it is demonstrably true that right now is the best time to be alive. The recent, dramatic slowing in global population growth continues to spread prosperity from the developed to the developing world. Technology is helping billions of people rise above levels of mere subsistence. This technology of prosperity is cumulative and rapidly improving: we use it to solve problems in ways that would have be unimaginable only a few decades ago. An optimistic antidote for pessimism and fear, this book: Helps to restore and reinforce our faith in the future Documents and explains how global changes impact our present and influence our future Discusses the costs and unforeseen consequences of some of the changes occurring in the modern world Offers engaging narrative, accurate data and research, and an in-depth look at the best books on the topic by leading thinkers Traces the history of economic progress and explores its consequences for human life around the world Fewer, Richer, Greener: Prospects for Humanity in an Age of Abundance is a must-read for anyone who wishes to regain hope for the present and wants to build a better future.

Abstract: Light in Architecture explores the role and use of light in and around buildings from the time that Stonehenge was built through to the present day, illustrating how a greater understanding of this intangible and free material will lead us to better architecture and, ultimately, improve our quality of life. Translated and carefully updated from the best-selling Spanish book, La Materia Intangible , this full colour edition explains why light is so fundamental to human perception, how its nature and use are influenced by time and place, and how it has come to be used as a tool for abstract architectural design. Drawing on centuries of thinking and over 40 real-life, international exemplars, the book explores the different ways that light can be harnessed and manipulated to achieve particular objectives, emotions or experiences, as well as how the technologies and techniques for doing so have developed over time.

Abstract: Book Award Finalist for Urban Design Group Awards 2020 Human settlements are the result of a mix of self-organisation and planning. Planners are fighting a losing battle to impose order on chaotic systems. Connections between the process of urban growth and the fields of complexity theory are of increasing importance to planners and urbanists alike; the idea that cities are emergent structures created not by design but from the interplay of relatively simple rules and forces over time. From the the small Tuscan hill town to the megacities of Asia: the struggle between the planned and the unplanned is universal. Based on years of international research, Climax City is a critical exploration of the growth of cities and masterplanning. Challenging the idea that the city can be entirely planned on paper, this book implores you to work with chaos when planning cities. Beautifully illustrated with striking hand-drawn plans of global cities, this is a vital and accessible contribution to urban theory and planning. It’s the perfect title for practitioners and academics across planning and urban design looking to make sense out of chaos.

Abstract: In recent years, there has been a proliferation of opinion-heavy texts on the Web: opinions of Internet users, comments on social networks, etc. Automating the synthesis of opinions has become crucial to gaining an overview on a given topic. Current automatic systems perform well on classifying the subjective or objective character of a document. However, classifications obtained from polarity analysis remain inconclusive, due to the algorithms' inability to understand the subtleties of human language. Automatic Detection of Irony presents, in three stages, a supervised learning approach to predicting whether a tweet is ironic or not. The book begins by analyzing some everyday examples of irony and presenting a reference corpus. It then develops an automatic irony detection model for French tweets that exploits semantic traits and extralinguistic context. Finally, it presents a study of portability in a multilingual framework (Italian, English, Arabic).

Abstract: This book examines the trends and innovations at the cutting edge of office design in the UK today. Selected from British Council for Offices Award winners since 2002 and interpreting empirical analyses by Davis Langdon, the varied and stunningly illustrated case studies presented here demonstrate the latest thinking from the world of workplace design. Taken together, they offer insight and inspiration for architects, developers, clients and anyone interested in getting the very best out of places of work. The text is sharp and authoritative, and complemented by colour photographs, floor plans, elevations and detail drawings. The chapters are organised into salient topics the Workplace, Location, Structure, Cost and Sustainability but along the way take account of numerous critical issues such as light levels and staff amenities. A wide-ranging end chapter, written by Jeremy Myerson and Paul Warner, knits together contemporary socio-cultural influences to imagine the future of the office.

Abstract: Book Award Finalist for Urban Design Group Awards 2020 Building in Arcadia: The case for well-designed rural development is a reasoned, impassioned and ultimately practical book identifying key barriers to rural development, and how planning applicants (whether householders, developers and landowners), and most particularly their agents who make the applications – architects, landscape architects or planners – can address, and overcome, them. Focusing on the positive aesthetic role buildings can play in the landscape, and proposing sensitive development, Building in Arcadia also explores the essential economic, social and Environmental case for more building in the countryside to make the countryside more viable. In so doing, it will actively engage, challenge and provoke debate – as well as offering practical ways forward.

Abstract: This book started life as a successor to Sustainable Architecture , published in 2007, which set out to prove that sustainable architecture can indeed both ‘lift the spirit’ as well as save the planet. This fully revised edition seeks to take a step further, exploring how sustainable buildings are occupied and work, and sheds light on the methods used to observe this. Through short essays from thought-leaders and case studies of visually stunning, environmentally ground-breaking projects, Better Buildings provides architects with the inspiration and tools they need to deliver sustainable design.

Abstract: Will your organization be protected the day a quantum computer breaks encryption on the internet? Computer encryption is vital for protecting users, data, and infrastructure in the digital age. Using traditional computing, even common desktop encryption could take decades for specialized ‘crackers’ to break and government and infrastructure-grade encryption would take billions of times longer. In light of these facts, it may seem that today’s computer cryptography is a rock-solid way to safeguard everything from online passwords to the backbone of the entire internet. Unfortunately, many current cryptographic methods will soon be obsolete. In 2016, the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) predicted that quantum computers will soon be able to break the most popular forms of public key cryptography. The encryption technologies we rely on every day—HTTPS, TLS, WiFi protection, VPNs, cryptocurrencies, PKI, digital certificates, smartcards, and most two-factor authentication—will be virtually useless. . . unless you prepare. Cryptography Apocalypse is a crucial resource for every IT and InfoSec professional for preparing for the coming quantum-computing revolution. Post-quantum crypto algorithms are already a reality, but implementation will take significant time and computing power. This practical guide helps IT leaders and implementers make the appropriate decisions today to meet the challenges of tomorrow. This important book: Gives a simple quantum mechanics primer Explains how quantum computing will break current cryptography Offers practical advice for preparing for a post-quantum world Presents the latest information on new cryptographic methods Describes the appropriate steps leaders must take to implement existing solutions to guard against quantum-computer security threats Cryptography Apocalypse: Preparing for the Day When Quantum Computing Breaks Today's Crypto is a must-have guide for anyone in the InfoSec world who needs to know if their security is ready for the day crypto break and how to fix it.

Abstract: This is the designer’s essential guide to implementing the new CDM 2015 regulations. It provides both a straightforward overview of the key changes and new duty holders, including the Principal Designer, as well as full colour diagrams and annotated plans which demonstrate how to apply the principles in the real world. As the regulations come into force it aims to reassure those fearing a change in their obligations by outlining easy to use practical tools which will integrate the philosophy of the new regulations – of proportionate response, creative solutions and collaborative working – into day-to-day practice. It’s designed as a concise and handy quick reference guide, easy to carry around on site or use at your desk, translating what can be dry and often impenetrable legislation into a set of simple, intuitive, design friendly and safe messages.
