Abstract: Everyone's buzzing about drones! Why? Because drones are cool and fun! They can be used to deliver pizza, as surveillance and security devices, for aerial photography and more! In MAKE's v37, we'll look at all this, plus take a "maker's" view on drones: how DIY buffs can actually make one. There are over 25 pages in this special section, including a walk-through drone taxonomy (air/land/sea), the landscape of the law surrounding drones today, and a bird's eye view of the drone aerial photography project. Other projects in this packed issue: License plate guitar Chameleon bag (changes colors based onwhat's missing from your bag!) GPS cat collar Zombie flashlight (uses dead batteries and empty chapstick tube)

Abstract: With 3D printing advancing at an incredible pace, Make: magazine continues to lead with in-depth testing and reviews of the latest machines, newest printing software, and coolest prints and projects to create. This year's crop of printers features sleek, high-tech looks coupled with increasingly sophisticated interfaces that lower the barrier of entry to a wider range of new users. We'll show buyers how to pick the best printer for their needs, how to use it effectively, and how to fix problems when they arise. All this plus the wide-range of projects, features, and columns found in every issue of Make:--it's our annual best-seller, better than ever!In this issue: 24 Head-to-head printer reviews 10 cool prints in under 30 minutes "State of 3D Printing" overview Sneak peek at tomorrow's 3D printers Plus More Projects: 3D-printed Eyeglass frames CT-scanned skulls and medical images Cyberpunk Spikes Universal Translator

Abstract: In recent years scientists have investigated a series of new methods for non-rocket space launch, which promise to revolutionize space launches and flight. Particularly in the current political climate new, cheaper, and more 'fuel efficient' methods are being investigated. Such new methods include the gas tube method, cable accelerators, tether launch systems, space elevators, solar and magnetic sails, circle launcher space keepers and more. The author brings a vast amount of experience to the topic, having worked as a engineer, designer, project director and researcher at key institutes including NASA and the US Air Force. Explores all the new non-rocket space launch methods, and compares them with each other and traditional rockets. Investigates the unifying principles of the different systems and shows how to select the best design suited to the mission. Author brings together technical and theoretical expertise from both industry and academia

Abstract: Nanophotonics is a field of science and technology based on the manipulation of light with equally miniscule structures, in the same way that computer chips are used to route and switch electrical signals. By enabling new high bandwidth, high speed optoelectronic components, nanophotonics has the potential to revolutionize the fields of telecommunications, computation and sensing. In this book, Zalevsky and Abdulhalim explore one of the key technologies emerging within nanophotonics, that of nano-integrated photonic modulation devices and sensors. The attempt to integrate photonic dynamic devices with microelectronic circuits is becoming a major scientific as well as industrial trend due to the fact that currently processing is mainly achieved using microelectronic chips but transmission, especially for long distances, takes place via optical links. Unlocks the technologies that will turn the rapidly growing research area of nanophotonics into a major area of commercial development, with applications in telecommunications, computing, security and sensing. Nano-integrated photonic modulation devices and sensors are the components that will see nanophotonics moving out of the lab into a new generation of products and services. By covering the scientific fundamentals alongside technological applications, the authors open up this important multidisciplinary subject to readers from a range of scientific backgrounds.
