    Abstract: This publication focuses on the role of university museums, their organisation, management, governance and finance. Most university museum collections have been assembled for the purposes of teaching and research rather than for public display. Whether small, of local importance or large, with great public appeal, they are all defined by their relationship to their university and form a distinctive sector in the museum community. The papers gathered in this book take this distinctiveness into consideration. They examine the common issues and problems that university museums are facing, among which the most important ones are funding and collection management. Many examples of good and imaginative practice are presented as regards fundraising, widening public access, integrating information resources, marketing, management and international collaboration.

    Abstract: L'objectif prioritaire des universités n'est plus seulement de relever le niveau de formation de la population et d'améliorer les résultats de la recherche scientifique : l’enseignement et la recherche universitaires doivent également être mis au service d’objectifs économiques et sociaux précis. Nulle part cette attente n’est plus évidente qu'en matière de développement régional. Quel rôle les universités jouent-elles dans le développement des régions où elles sont implantées ? Ces études de cas sont complétées par d'autres sources d'information sur la politique de l'enseignement supérieur, telles que les grandes enquêtes nationales sur l'enseignement supérieur réalisées en Australie, en Finlande et au Royaume-Uni, et qui prennent en compte le programme d'action régional.
