Abstract:
Abstract:
A gourd is decorated by a woman in the courtyard of a Sara-Mbai homestead enclosed by mats in the little village of Kemdéré II. The design is called 'delum kum koï', that means "the eyes of the non-initiated", of the youths not yet initiated in the binding traditions of the group. The artist first draws a (humid) preliminary sketch of the symbolic-abstract motif on the outer surface of the gourd, than carries it out with a number of hot irons. As a comparison with other decorated gourds shows, "the eyes of the non-initiated" is a central motif in the decoration of gourds, representing always initiation motives and executed exclusively by women, in the whole Sara region in the south of Chad Republic.
