Abstract: This book brings together a roster of prominent contributors to present a strategic interactionist perspective on the study of contentious politics in the Middle East in response to the Arab uprisings. The common thread among the contributions is an interest in the micro-level interactions between various strategic players, including not only the mobilisation of protestors during the uprisings but also the responses of regimes. The book also examines short to medium-term adaptations of the regimes and the collective action of opponents in the post-uprisings period, as well as the subsequent trajectories of the protesters themselves in the face of new forms of authoritarianism or democratisation.
Note: Includes bibliographical references and index , Preface , Introduction : Rethinking Mobilization after the Arab Uprisings , 1 The Social Life of Contentious Ideas : Piracy and Unruly, Translocal Appropriation in the Arab Uprisings and Beyond , 2 Routines and Ruptures in Anti-Israeli Protests in Jordan , 3 Shaping Contention as a Salafi Movement : The Rise and Fall of Ansar al-Sharia in Post-Revolutionary Tunisia , 4 Contingency and Agency in a Turning Point Event : March 18, 2011, in Daraa, Syria , 5 It Takes Two (or More) to Tango : The Local Coproduction of the Alexandrian Revolutionary Moment , 6 Violence, Social Actors, and Subjectivation in the Egyptian Revolution , Conclusion : Unruly Protest

Abstract: Players and Arenas brings together a diverse group of experts to examine the interactions between political protestors and the many strategic players they encounter, such as cultural institutions, religious organizations, and the mass media--as well as potential allies, competitors, recruits, and funders. Discussing protestors and players as they interact within the arenas of specific social contexts, the essays show that the main constraints on what protestors can accomplish come not from social and political structures, but from other players with different goals and interests. Through a careful treatment of these situations, this volume offers a new way to approach the role of social protest in national and international politics

Abstract: "In this important book, Jan Willem Duyvendak and James M. Jasper bring together an internationally acclaimed group of contributors to demonstrate the complexities of the social and political spheres in various areas of public policy. By breaking down the state into the players who really make decisions and pursue coherent strategies, these essays provide new perspectives on the interactions between political protestors and the many parts of the state--from courts, political parties, and legislators to police, armies, and intelligence services. By analyzing politics as the interplay of various players within structured arenas, Breaking Down the State provides an innovative look at law and order versus opposing movements in countries across the globe"--Provided by publisher.
