Abstract: As Linux on System z becomes more prevalent and mainstream in the industry, the need for it to deliver higher levels of availability is increasing. This IBM Redbooks publication starts with an explanation of high availability (HA) fundamentals such as HA concepts and terminology. It continues with a discussion of why a business needs to consider an HA solution and then explains how to determine your business single points of failure. We outline the components of a high availability solution and describe these components. Then we provide some architectural scenarios and demonstrate how to plan and decide an implementation of an end-to-end HA solution, from Linux on System z database scenarios to z/OS, and include storage, network, z/VM, Linux, and middleware. This implementation includes the IBM Tivoli System Automation for Multiplatforms (TSA MP), which monitors and automates applications distributed across Linux, AIX®, and z/OS® operating systems, as well as a GDPS based solution. It includes the planning for an end-to-end scenario, considering Linux on System z, z/VM, and z/OS operating environments, and the middleware used. The TSA MP implements HA for infrastructure, network, operating systems, and applications across multiple platforms and is compared to a Linux HA implementation based on open source Linux-HA, which is Linux only.

Abstract: This IBM® Redbooks® publication will help you design and manage an end-to-end, extended distance connectivity architecture for IBM System z®. This solution addresses your requirements now, and positions you to make effective use of new technologies in the future. Many enterprises implement extended distance connectivity in a silo manner. However, effective extended distance solutions require the involvement of different teams within an organization. Typically there is a network group, a storage group, a systems group, and possibly other teams. The intent of this publication is to help you design and manage a solution that will provide for all of your System z extended distance needs in the most effective and flexible way possible. This book introduces an approach to help plan, optimize, and maintain all of the moving parts of the solution together.

Abstract: Mainframe computers play a central role in the daily operations of many of the worlds largest corporations. Batch processing is still a fundamental, mission-critical component of the workloads that run on the mainframe and a large portion of the workload on IBM® z/OS® systems is processed in batch mode. This IBM Redbooks® publication is the second volume in a series of four in which we describe new technologies introduced by IBM to facilitate the use of hybrid batch applications that combine the best aspects of Java and procedural programming languages such as COBOL. This volume specifically focuses on the z/OS batch runtime. The audience for this book includes IT architects and application developers, with a focus on batch processing on the z/OS platform. Please note that the additional material referenced in the text is not available from IBM.

Abstract: As world activities become more integrated, the rate of data growth has been increasing exponentially. And as a result of this data explosion, current data management methods can become inadequate. People are using the term big data (sometimes referred to as Big Data) to describe this latest industry trend. IBM® is preparing the next generation of technology to meet these data management challenges. To provide the capability of incorporating big data sources and analytics of these sources, IBM developed a stream-computing product that is based on the open source computing framework Apache Hadoop. Each product in the framework provides unique capabilities to the data management environment, and further enhances the value of your data warehouse investment. In this IBM Redbooks® publication, we describe the need for big data in an organization. We then introduce IBM InfoSphere® BigInsights™ and explain how it differs from standard Hadoop. BigInsights provides a packaged Hadoop distribution, a greatly simplified installation of Hadoop and corresponding open source tools for application development, data movement, and cluster management. BigInsights also brings more options for data security, and as a component of the IBM big data platform, it provides potential integration points with the other components of the platform. A new chapter has been added to this edition. Chapter 11 describes IBM Platform Symphony®, which is a new scheduling product that works with IBM Insights, bringing low-latency scheduling and multi-tenancy to IBM InfoSphere BigInsights. The book is designed for clients, consultants, and other technical professionals.

Abstract: When ricocheting a solution that involves analytics, the mainframe might not be the first platform that comes to mind. However, the IBM® System z® group has developed some innovative solutions that include the well-respected mainframe benefits. This book describes a workshop that demonstrates the use of real-time advanced analytics for enhancing core banking decisions using a loan origination example. The workshop is a live hands-on experience of the entire process from analytics modeling to deployment of real-time scoring services for use on IBM z/OS®. In this IBM Redbooks® publication, we include a facilitator guide chapter as well as a participant guide chapter. The facilitator guide includes information about the preparation, such as the needed material, resources, and steps to set up and run this workshop. The participant guide shows step-by-step the tasks for a successful learning experience. The goal of the first hands-on exercise is to learn how to use IBM SPSS® Modeler for Analytics modeling. This provides the basis for the next exercise "Configuring risk assessment in SPSS Decision Management". In the third exercise, the participant experiences how real-time scoring can be implemented on a System z. This publication is written for consultants, IT architects, and IT administrators who want to become familiar with SPSS and analytics solutions on the System z.

Abstract: This IBM® Redbooks® publication introduces the IBM System z® Personal Development Tool (zPDT), which runs on an underlying Linux system based on an Intel processor. zPDT provides a System z system on a PC capable of running current System z operating systems, including emulation of selected System z I/O devices and control units. It is intended as a development, demonstration, and learning platform; it is not designed as a production system. This book, discussing more advanced topics, is the last of three volumes. The first volume introduces zPDT and provides reference material for zPDT commands and device managers. The second volume describes the installation of zPDT (including the underlying Linux, and a particular z/OS® distribution) and basic usage patterns. The third volume discusses more advanced topics that may not interest all zPDT users. The IBM order numbers for the three volumes are SG24-7721, SG24-7722, and SG24-7723. The systems discussed in these volumes are complex, with elements of Linux (for the underlying PC machine), z/Architecture® (for the core zPDT elements), System z I/O functions (for emulated I/O devices), and z/OS (providing the System z application interface), and possibly with other System z operating systems. We assume the reader is familiar with the general concepts and terminology of System z hardware and software elements and with basic PC Linux characteristics.

Abstract: 2007 erstmals erschienen.

Abstract: The popularity of the Internet and the affordability of IT hardware and software have resulted in an explosion of applications, architectures, and platforms. Workloads have changed. Many applications, including mission-critical ones, are deployed on a variety of platforms, and the System z® design has adapted to this change. It takes into account a wide range of factors, including compatibility and investment protection, to match the IT requirements of an enterprise. The zEnterprise System consists of the IBM zEnterprise 196 central processor complex, the IBM zEnterprise Unified Resource Manager, and the IBM zEnterprise BladeCenter® Extension. The z196 is designed with improved scalability, performance, security, resiliency, availability, and virtualization. The z196 Model M80 provides up to 1.6 times the total system capacity of the z10™ EC Model E64, and all z196 models provide up to twice the available memory of the z10 EC. The zBX infrastructure works with the z196 to enhance System z virtualization and management through an integrated hardware platform that spans mainframe, POWER7™, and System x® technologies. Through the Unified Resource Manager, the zEnterprise System is managed as a single pool of resources, integrating system and workload management across the environment. This IBM® Redbooks® publication provides an overview of the zEnterprise System and its functions, features, and associated software support. Greater detail is offered in areas relevant to technical planning. This book is intended for systems engineers, consultants, planners, and anyone wanting to understand the zEnterprise System functions and plan for their usage. It is not intended as an introduction to mainframes. Readers are expected to be generally familiar with existing IBM System z technology and terminology. The changes to this edition are based on the System z hardware announcement dated July 12, 2011.

Abstract: Recently, the IT industry has seen an explosion in applications, architectures, and platforms. With the generalized availability of the internet and the appearance of commodity hardware and software, several patterns have emerged that have gained center stage. Workloads have changed. Many applications, including mission-critical ones, are deployed in heterogeneous infrastructures. System z® design has adapted to this change. IBM® has a holistic approach to System z design, which includes hardware, software, and procedures. It takes into account a wide range of factors, including compatibility and investment protection, which ensures a tighter fit with IT requirements of an enterprise. This IBM Redbooks® publication introduces the revolutionary scalable IBM zEnterprise System, which consists of the IBM zEnterprise 196 (z196) or the IBM zEnterprise 114 (z114), the IBM zEnterprise BladeCenter® Extension (zBX), and the IBM zEnterprise Unified Resource Manager. IBM is taking a bold step by integrating heterogeneous platforms under the proven System z hardware management capabilities, while extending System z qualities of service to those platforms. The z196 and z114 are general-purpose servers that are equally at ease with compute-intensive workloads and with I/O-intensive workloads. The integration of heterogeneous platforms is based on IBM BladeCenter technology, allowing improvements in price and performance for key workloads, while enabling a new range of heterogeneous platform solutions. The z196 and z114 are at the core of the enhanced System z platforms, which are designed to deliver technologies that businesses need today along with a foundation to drive future business growth. The changes to this edition are based on the System z hardware announcement dated July 12, 2011. This book provides basic information about z196, z114, zBX, and Unified Resource Manager capabilities, hardware functions and features, and associated software support. It is intended for IT managers, architects, consultants, and anyone else who wants to understand the elements of the zEnterprise System. For this introduction to the zEnterprise System, readers are not expected to be familiar with current IBM System z technology and terminology.

Abstract: You may have several triggers to investigate the feasibility of moving a workload or set of workloads to the IBM® System z® platform. These triggers could be concerns about operational cost, manageability, or delivering the agreed service levels, among others. Investigating the feasibility of a possible migration or transition to any other platform, including System z, requires a number of basic steps. These steps usually start with an understanding of the current workload and its pain points, and end with a business case to move the workload. It is important to find out how easy a migration is going to be and how much risk will be involved. In this IBM Redbooks® publication we offer thoughts on how to move through these steps. We also include a chapter with a System z technology summary to help you understand how a migrated workload may fit on the platform. Our focus in this book is on workloads that are mission-critical and require a high level of availability, including disaster recovery.

Vorrangig empfohlen. Ab 5

Abstract: 2007 erstmals erschienen.
