Abstract: The popularity of the Internet and the affordability of information technology (IT) hardware and software have resulted in an explosion dramatic increase in the number of applications, architectures, and platforms. Workloads have changed. Many applications, including mission-critical ones, are deployed on a variety of platforms, and the IBM® System z® design has adapted to this change. It takes into account a wide range of factors, including compatibility and investment protection, to match the IT requirements of an enterprise. This IBM Redbooks® publication provides information about the IBM zEnterprise® BC12 (zBC12), an IBM scalable mainframe server. IBM is taking a revolutionary approach by integrating separate platforms under the well-proven System z hardware management capabilities, while extending System z qualities of service to those platforms. The zEnterprise System consists of the zBC12 central processor complex, the IBM zEnterprise Unified Resource Manager, and the IBM zEnterprise BladeCenter® Extension (zBX). The zBC12 is designed with improved scalability, performance, security, resiliency, availability, and virtualization. The zBC12 provides the following improvements over its predecessor, the IBM zEnterprise 114 (z114): Up to a 36% performance boost per core running at 4.2 GHz Up to 58% more capacity for traditional workloads Up to 62% more capacity for Linux workloads The zBX infrastructure works with the zBC12 to enhance System z virtualization and management through an integrated hardware platform that spans mainframe, IBM POWER7®, and IBM System x® technologies. The federated capacity from multiple architectures of the zEnterprise System is managed as a single pool of resources, integrating system and workload management across the environment through the Unified Resource Manager. This book provides an overview of the zBC12 and its functions, features, and associated software support. Greater detail is offered in areas relevant to technical planning. This book is intended for systems engineers, consultants, planners, and anyone who wants to understand zEnterprise System functions and plan for their usage. It is not intended as an introduction to mainframes. Readers are expected to be generally familiar with existing IBM System z technology and terminology.

Abstract: Message Queuing Telemetry Transport (MQTT) is a messaging protocol designed for the Internet of Things (IoT). It is lightweight enough to be supported by the smallest devices, yet robust enough to ensure that important messages get to their destinations every time. With MQTT devices, such as energy meters, cars, trains, mobile phones and tablets, and personal health care devices, devices can communicate with each other and with other systems or applications. IBM® MessageSight is a messaging appliance designed to handle the scale and security of a robust IoT solution. MessageSight allows you to easily secure connections, configure policies for messaging, and scale to up to a million concurrently connected devices. This IBM Redbooks® publication introduces MQTT and MessageSight through a simple key fob remote MQTT application. It then dives into the architecture and development of a robust, cross-platform Ride Share and Taxi solution (PickMeUp) with real-time voice, GPS location sharing, and chat among a variety of mobile platforms. The publication also includes an addendum describing use cases in a variety of other domains, with sample messaging topology and suggestions for design.

Abstract: This IBM® Redbooks® publication describes how to roll your own Linux virtual servers on IBM System z® hardware under IBM z/VM®. It adopts a cookbook format that provides a concise, repeatable set of procedures for installing and configuring z/VM 6.3 into a single system image (SSI), then installing and customizing Linux. You need at least two IBM System z logical partitions (LPARs) with associated resources, z/VM 6.3 media, and either the Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) version 6.4 or the SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES) version 11 SP3 distribution (or both). This book assumes that you have a general familiarity with System z technology and terminology. It does not assume an in-depth understanding of z/VM and Linux. It is written for those who want to get a quick start with z/VM and Linux on the mainframe, and to get some virtual servers up and running in a short amount of time (days, not weeks or months).

Abstract: IBM® DB2® with BLU Acceleration is a revolutionary technology that is delivered in DB2 for Linux, UNIX, and Windows Release 10.5. BLU Acceleration delivers breakthrough performance improvements for analytic queries by using dynamic in-memory columnar technologies. Different from other vendor solutions, BLU Acceleration allows the unified computing of online transaction processing (OLTP) and analytics data inside a single database, therefore, removing barriers and accelerating results for users. With observed hundredfold improvement in query response time, BLU Acceleration provides a simple, fast, and easy-to-use solution for the needs of today's organizations; quick access to business answers can be used to gain a competitive edge, lower costs, and more. This IBM Redbooks® publication introduces the concepts of DB2 with BLU Acceleration. It discusses the steps to move from a relational database to using BLU Acceleration, optimizing BLU usage, and deploying BLU into existing analytic solutions today, with an example of IBM Cognos®. This book also describes integration of DB2 with BLU Acceleration into SAP Business Warehouse (SAP BW) and SAP's near-line storage solution on DB2. This publication is intended to be helpful to a wide-ranging audience, including those readers who want to understand the technologies and readers who have planning, deployment, and support responsibilities.
