Abstract: Get up-to-speed quickly and connect modern code written in C#, R, and Python to an existing codebase written in C++. This book for practitioners is about software interoperability in a Windows environment from C++ to languages such as C#, R, and Python. Using a series of example projects, the book demonstrates how to connect a simple C++ codebase packaged as a static or dynamic library to modern clients written in C#, R, and Python. The book shows you how to develop the in-between components that allow disparate languages to communicate. This book addresses a fundamental question in software design: given an existing C++ codebase, how does one go about connecting that codebase to clients written in C#, R, and Python? How is the C++ functionality exposed to these clients? One answer may be to rewrite the existing codebase in the target language. This is rarely, if ever, feasible and this book’s goal is to save you the pain and the high cost of throwing out valuable existing code by showing you how to make that older code function alongside and with the more modern languages that are commonly in use today. The knowledge you will gain from reading this book will help you broaden your architectural choices and take advantage of the growing amount of talent around newer languages. What You Will Learn Build components that connect C++ to other languages Translate between the C++ type system and the type systems of C#, R, and Python Write a managed assembly targeting the .NET framework Create C++ packages for use in R/Studio Develop Python modules based on high-performance C++ code Overcome the difficulties and pitfalls involved in cross-language development Who This Book Is For Software developers who are looking for ways to extend existing systems written in C++ using modern languages. Abstract: Know the fundamentals of creating and deploying microservices using .NET 6 and gain insight from prescriptive guidance in this book on the when and why to incorporate them. The microservices architecture is a way of distributing process workloads to independent applications. This distribution allows for the independent applications to scale and evolve separately. It also enables developers to dismantle large applications into smaller, easier-to-maintain, scalable parts. While the return is valuable and the concept straightforward, applying it to an application is far more complicated. Where do you start? How do you find the optimal dividing point for your app, and strategically, how should your app be parceled out into separate services? Pro Microservices in .NET 6 will introduce you to all that and more. The authors get you started with an overview of microservices, .NET 6, event storming, and domain-driven design. You will use that foundational information to build a reference application throughout the book. From there, you will create your first microservice using .NET 6 that you can deploy into Docker and Azure Kubernetes Service. You will also learn about communication styles, decentralizing data, and testing microservices. Finally, you will learn about logging, metrics, tracing, and use that information for debugging. There is a disconnect between corporate governance/management initiatives and commercial success. Sound management and governance will help you bridge that gap between classic corporate valuation disciplines and commercial success. Project and corporate growth are both characterized by functional focus. For example, there might be a dedicated sales/marketing growth project. Metrics of success might be market share or number of units sold. In reality, growth is an overall organizational effort and must be measured by the increase in the corporate valuation. Interview data show that this is not the case and that the contributor’s efforts become misaligned in the excitement and focus of the individual campaign. This book shows you how overall valuation is the true measure of success of a growth effort. It is a lesson that applies from startup to the public liquidation of the entity. What You Will Learn Allocate growth resources, including the decision process, internal governance, and empowering leadership Consider marketing and branding, such as competitive perspective, customer demographics, regulatory considerations, role of collaboration, and more Know the role of technology/IP, including the current state of application and the role of proprietary information Consider risk and downside, including company failure, loss of market share, and loss of key people/customers Who This Book Is For C-level management and above; corporate governance professionals; boards of directors; CEOs; venture and other investment organizations; business school academics, faculty, and students; and accounting, regulatory, and legal professionals

Abstract: In this course, we will look at using asynchronous programming in Python: the options, pitfalls, and best practices. We start with multi-threading, which is particularly useful when there is a lot of waiting, e.g. for HTTP requests or disk access. With multi-threading, you can start many requests in quick succession and then wait for all of them to complete at once. Next, the course will show you how to write your code in a thread-safe manner, and how to use it risk-free. Further, it covers Python’s global interpreter lock, which prevents a lot of serious problems in Python but also stops you from running threads in parallel. Going forward we discover how you can use Python’s multiprocessing library to run functions in parallel. Threads and processes often need to share or exchange data. In asynchronous code just passing Python objects is usually not the safest way to do this. This course looks at the main ways to do this correctly in Python, such as queues and events. Finally, the course moves on to the concurrent.future library which contains higher-level abstractions, including thread and processing pools and an asynchronous map function. The course finishes with advice on how to write robust asynchronous code, and how to test and debug it. Abstract: In this video, you will explore forecasting techniques in Python, including how to use machine learning models from Scikit Learn, as well as integrating R as a sub process to gain access to the robust forecast library, incorporating the auto.arima and tbats models. We create our own Python class called Forecaster that stores all of the relevant information about the predictions, including error metrics, model forms, hyperparameter selections, and the forecasts themselves. The module is written in such a way that models can easily be added to the framework for increasing accuracy. In the specific scenario, we are forecasting on 150 separate time series—3 time series for each state using economic indicators from the St. Louis Federal Reserve (FRED) website. We build an API to extract the data and add our own indicators that we think will influence the future. At the time that this video is published, the country is experiencing a recession from the COVID-19 pandemic. Therefore, we will extract the recession indicator from the FRED website and make assumptions about how long the recession will last. Using this information, we create an economic outlook for each state. These forecasts can then be used to see which states we expect to recover most quickly from the recession. This modeling process will be done in Python on a Jupyter Notebook, so it's a good idea to have Anaconda installed on your computer so you can follow along. The rpy2 library from Python will be utilized, so having R installed in your local environment is necessary. What You Will Learn Create classes in Python Make predictions with machine learning and common forecasting models Manipulate data with Pandas Store data in base Python structures (lists, dictionaries) Create APIs and visual aids Who This Book Is For Data scientists with experience who are looking to take their forecasting skills to the next level.

Abstract: This book has everything you need to know about Windows Containers, from an IT pro and ops perspective. Containers are the next big thing in IT infrastructure. More and more, we see companies relying on Kubernetes implementations to run their workloads on-premises, in the cloud, or even in hybrid deployments. IT pros and ops teams are now faced with the challenge of getting up to speed on container architecture, knowing how it differs from virtual machines (VMs), and the best means and practices for managing their applications in containers. Windows Containers for IT Pros explores all of that, from the IT pro experience. You will approach learning about containers through the optics of an author who is accustomed to deploying virtual machines (VMs). You will learn about differences, parallel practices, use cases, and how to get started and go deep into day 2 operations. What You Will Learn Architect and deploy Windows Containers leveraging existing skills Containerize existing applications Know best practices for managing resources in Windows Containers Get comfortable moving containers to the cloud with Azure Understand the options for using containers on Azure Who This Book Is For Windows IT pros and technical professionals deploying Windows Server and server applications today, such as .NET, ASP.NET, IIS, and more. Abstract: Master the syntax for working with R’s plotting functions in graphics and stats in this easy reference to formatting plots. The approach in Visualizing Data in R 4 toward the application of formatting in ggplot() will follow the structure of the formatting used by the plotting functions in graphics and stats. This book will take advantage of the new features added to R 4 where appropriate including a refreshed color palette for charts, Cairo graphics with more fonts/symbols, and improved performance from grid graphics including ggplot 2 rendering speed. Visualizing Data in R 4 starts with an introduction and then is split into two parts and six appendices. Part I covers the function plot() and the ancillary functions you can use with plot(). You’ll also see the functions par() and layout(), providing for multiple plots on a page. Part II goes over the basics of using the functions qplot() and ggplot() in the package ggplot2. The default plots generated by the functions qplot() and ggplot() give more sophisticated-looking plots than the default plots done by plot() and are easier to use, but the function plot() is more flexible. Both plot() and ggplot() allow for many layers to a plot. The six appendices will cover plots for contingency tables, plots for continuous variables, plots for data with a limited number of values, functions that generate multiple plots, plots for time series analysis, and some miscellaneous plots. Some of the functions that will be in the appendices include functions that generate histograms, bar charts, pie charts, box plots, and heatmaps. What You Will Learn Use R to create informative graphics Master plot(), qplot(), and ggplot() Discover the canned graphics functions in stats and graphics Format plots generated by plot() and ggplot() Who This Book Is For Those in data science who use R. Abstract: Learn how free software became open source and how you can sell open source software. This book provides a historical context of how open source has thoroughly transformed how we write software, how we cooperate, how we communicate, how we organize, and, ultimately, how we think about business values. This fully updated second edition includes an entire chapter on legal considerations such as trademarks and the latest happenings in open source licensing. It also expands on open hardware trends such as RISC-V, open governance, and the difference between community projects and commercial products, especially as seen through the lens of security. You’ll look at project and community examples including Linux, BSD, Apache, and Kubernetes, understand the open source development model, and how open source has influenced approaches more broadly, even within proprietary software, such as open betas. You'll also examine the flipside, the "Second Machine Age," and the challenges of open source-based business models. Today, open source serves as shorthand for much broader trends and behaviors. It’s not just about a free (in all senses of the word) alternative to commercial software. It increasingly is the new commercial software. How Open Source Ate Software, second edition reveals how open source has much in common, and is often closely allied, with many other trends in business and society. You'll see how it enables projects that go beyond any individual company. That makes open source not just a story about software, but a story about almost everything. What You'll Learn The opportunities that open source creates and the challenges that come with them The ways in which companies can create business models to successfully sell "free" software How the open source development model works from creating communities to selling commercial products The important issues associated with open source project and product governance and licensing How open source principles can apply more broadly to DevOps and other organizational practices Who This Book Is For Anyone who is contemplating building a community and a business around open source software.

Abstract: Want to use the power of R sooner rather than later? Don’t have time to plow through wordy texts and online manuals? Use this book for quick, simple code to get your projects up and running. It includes code and examples applicable to many disciplines. Written in everyday language with a minimum of complexity, each chapter provides the building blocks you need to fit R’s astounding capabilities to your analytics, reporting, and visualization needs. CRAN Recipes recognizes how needless jargon and complexity get in your way. Busy professionals need simple examples and intuitive descriptions; side trips and meandering philosophical discussions are left for other books. Here R scripts are condensed, to the extent possible, to copy-paste-run format. Chapters and examples are structured to purpose rather than particular functions (e.g., “dirty data cleanup” rather than the R package name “janitor”). Everyday language eliminates the need to know functions/packages in advance. Abstract: Use this book to learn the Distributed Application Runtime (Dapr), a new event-driven runtime from Microsoft designed to help developers build microservices applications, using a palette of languages and frameworks that run everywhere: on-premises, in any cloud, and even on the edge. One of the most popular architectural patterns for implementing large, complex, distributed solutions is the microservices architectural style. Because solutions are composed of services based on various languages, frameworks, and platforms, the more complex and compartmentalized an application becomes, the more considerations a developer has to keep in mind. Much of the time this proves to be difficult. Introducing Distributed Application Runtime (Dapr) is your guide to achieving more with less through patterns. Part I of the book is about understanding microservices and getting up and running with Dapr, either on your machine or in any Kubernetes cluster. From there you are guided through the concepts of Dapr, how it works, and what it can do for you. You will wrap up with various ways to debug Dapr applications using Visual Studio Code locally, inside a container or Kubernetes. In Part II you will jump into the reusable patterns and practices, the building blocks of Dapr. You will go from service invocation, publish and subscribe, state management, resource bindings, and the Actor model to secrets; each building block is covered in detail in its own dedicated chapter. You will learn what Dapr offers from a functional perspective and also how you can leverage the three pillars of observability (logs, metrics, and traces) in order to gain insight into your applications. In Part III you will explore advanced concepts, including using middleware pipelines, integrating Dapr into web frameworks such as ASP.NET Core, or the runtimes of Azure Logic Apps and Azure Functions. The book features a multi-versed set of examples that cover not only the plain API of Dapr, but also the .NET SDK. Hence, most of the examples are in .NET 5, with a small number in JavaScript to exemplify the use of multiple languages. Examples show you how to securely use Dapr to leverage a variety of services in Microsoft Azure, including Azure Kubernetes Service, Azure Storage, Azure Service Bus, Azure Event Grid, Azure Key Vault, Azure Monitor, and Azure Active Directory among others. What You Will Learn Recognize the challenges and boundaries of microservices architecture Host Dapr inside a K...

Abstract: Gain the essential skills for computer science using one of today's most popular programming languages, Java. This book will prepare you for AP CompSci Complete, but you don’t need to be sitting that class to benefit. Computer science has become a basic life skill that everyone is going to need to learn. Whether you are going into a career or side hustle in business, technology, creativity, architecture, or almost any other field, you will find coding and computer science play a role. So when we learn programming we are going to focus on three things: what is the process; what is the syntax; and what is the flow. The process is represented as a flowchart. We will learn how to make these to help you plan out what you are going to do before you write a line of code. At first, the flowcharts will be pretty simple, but then they will get more complex. The syntax is the code: this is what you write that translates the process you create in a flowchart to the instructions that the computer can understand. Finally, there is the flow. This is where you trace through the code and see how the data and information it stores along the way changes. You can see how the operation of the program cascades from line to line. You will be building charts that will capture the programming flow so you can better understand how the computer processes code to make your next program easier to conceive and code. Along the way to aid in the learning of the essential Java skills, there will be three kinds of project types throughout this book: business software projects for applications where you work for a company and need to complete an internal project for a team such as the sales, marketing, or data science teams; social good projects where you are working for non-profits or for agencies that are trying to research and provide solutions to economic, environmental, medical, or humanitarian projects; and game development projects for games based on player input, random chance, or other mechanics for the use of entertainment. What is unique about computer science is how it has become a skill, and not just a career. While there are jobs and titles of “computer scientist”, the skill of computer science, and specifically programming, are almost everywhere. After reading and using this book, you'll have the essential skills to think like a computer scientist, even if you are not. As a result you’ll be of greater value to your clients, your company, and yourself. What You Wi...

Abstract: Know how locks work in MySQL and how they relate to transactions. This book explains the major role that locks play in database systems, showing how locks are essential in allowing high-concurrency workloads. You will learn about lock access levels and lock granularities from the user level as well as table locks to record and gap locks. Most importantly, the book covers troubleshooting techniques when locking becomes a pain point. Several of the lock types in MySQL have a duration of a transaction. For this reason, it is important to understand how transactions work. This book covers the basics of transactions as well as transaction isolation levels and how they affect locking. The book is meant to be your go-to resource for solving locking contention and similar problems in high-performance MySQL database applications. Detecting locking issues when they occur is the first key to resolving such issues. MySQL Concurrency provides techniques for detecting locking issues such as contention. The book shows how to analyze locks that are causing contention to see why those locks are in place. A collection of six comprehensive case studies combine locking and transactional theory with realistic lock conflicts. The case studies walk you through the symptoms to look for in order to identify which issue you are facing, the cause of the conflict, its analysis, solution, and how to prevent the issue in the future. What You Will Learn Understand which lock types exist in MySQL and how they are used Choose the best transaction isolation level for a given transaction Detect and analyze lock contention when it occurs Reduce locking issues in your applications Resolve deadlocks between transactions Resolve InnoDB record-level locking issues Resolve issues from metadata and schema locks Who This Book Is For Database administrators and SQL developers who are familiar with MySQL and want to gain a better understanding of locking and transactions as well as how to work with them. While some experience with MySQL is required, no prior knowledge of locks and transactions is needed.

Abstract: Learn how to build front-end applications that can help you ship applications faster with fewer defects. Many software projects fail because they are not planned well, or lack organization. Applying strategies from other industries can help you create better software. This book explores the “mise en place” technique from cooking and reveals how you can apply it to the art of creating software. In many professional kitchens, the work of preparing a meal is divided and performed in workstations to help create the whole. You'll review the philosophy behind this and see how to leverage this approach in your code. You'll also learn to visualize your applications as a series of components and build parts of your application in isolation - just like a professional chef crafting each part of the meal. The book describes to how to structure your code base for reuse, and how to communicate the code’s intent to other developers. You’ll develop your components in isolation and test these building blocks for quality at a granular level. Then compose these components as building blocks in increasingly complicated features. Finally, you’ll apply some strategies not directly related to code to ensure maximum quality and efficiency. With Modern Front-end Architecture , developers of all levels will learn strategies that they and their teams can leverage to be more productive. What You'll Learn Structure an application as a series of components Build a component library that others in an organization can leverage Ensure quality and accessibility at a component level rather than a page or app level Test code in a way that gives the maximum amount of confidence while providing an excellent developer experience Automate repeatable tasks Who This Book Is For Front end developers looking to maximize their code for reuse, quality, and shipping features quickly. Experienced developers will pick up new techniques that they can apply to their code base. Less experienced developers will be able to start applications off on the right foot.
