    Abstract: Sociology has developed theories of social change in the fields of evolution, conflict and modernization, viewing modern society as essentially unstable and conflict driven. However, it has not seriously studied catastrophe. A Theory of Catastrophe develops a sociology of catastrophes, comparing natural, social and political causes and consequences, and the social theories that might offer explanations. A catastrophe is a general and systematic breakdown of social and political institutions resulting, among other things, in what we could call a catastrophe consciousness. The Greek 'cata-strophe' formed the conclusion to a dramatic sequence of strophes. The cata-strophe was the final act of a drama, namely its denouement. Catastrophic denouements are without hope: genocides, military occupations, plagues, famines and earthquakes. A Theory of Catastrophe analyzes Pompeii, the Black Death, colonial genocide in North America, WWI and the Spanish Flu, and Nazi Germany and finally this century: terrorism, new wars, climate change and pandemics. As a study of sociological theory, Bryan Turner discusses Spengler's Decline of the West, Marxism as a theory of catastrophic capitalism, messianic movements, Weber on modernity, and risk society. He concludes by comparing optimism and pessimism, and the idea of inter-generational justice.

    Abstract: In the last three decades, the human body has gained increasing prominence in contemporary political debates, and it has become a central topic of modern social sciences and humanities. Modern technologies – such as organ transplants, stem-cell research, nanotechnology, cosmetic surgery and cryonics – have changed how we think about the body. In this collection of thirty original essays by leading figures in the field, these issues are explored across a number of theoretical and disciplinary perspectives, including pragmatism, feminism, queer theory, post-modernism, post-humanism, cultural sociology, philosophy and anthropology. A wide range of case studies, which include cosmetics, diet, organ transplants, racial bodies, masculinity and sexuality, eating disorders, religion and the sacred body, and disability, are used to appraise these different perspectives. In addition, this Handbook explores various epistemological approaches to the basic question: what is a body? It also offers a strongly themed range of chapters on empirical topics that are organized around religion, medicine, gender, technology and consumption. It also contributes to the debate over the globalization of the body: how have military technology, modern medicine, sport and consumption led to this contemporary obsession with matters corporeal?     Abstract: Abstract: "Die Bezeichnung 'Poststrukturalismus' ist ein Sammelbegriff, der recht heterogene französische Denkansätze der 1960er bis 1980er Jahre retrospektiv zusammenfasst, die sich selbst nicht so bezeichnet haben. In der deutschen Rezeption der 1970er und vor allem 1980er Jahre war das Label 'postmodernes Denken' ausschlaggebend, um die Arbeiten Derridas, Foucaults, Lyotards und anderer zu charakterisieren. Dabei stand nicht der Gegensatz des Poststrukturalismus zum Strukturalismus im Zentrum, sondern die Frage, ob es verantwortbar sei, auf die normative Kategorie des Subjekts zu verzichten. Während von Foucault und Derrida her die Historisierung bzw. Dekonstruktion des Subjekts zentral war, die Figur des Subjekts also auf die Gegenstandsseite der Untersuchung geschoben wurde, erkannten Gegner unterschiedlicher Provenienz genau darin eine Aufgabe aufklärerischer Prinzipien.     Abstract: Abstract: Die Anmerkungen der Autorin zu Joachim Radkaus Biographie "Max Weber. Die Leidenschaft des Denkens" (2005) beziehen sich auf zwei Kritikpunkte: Der erste Punkt betrifft Radkaus Auffassung, dass die Natur im Zentrum der Weber'schen Weltauffassung steht bzw. den Hauptgesichtspunkt zum Verständnis des Weber'schen Denkens bildet. Die Autorin wendet dagegen ein, dass in Radkaus Buch vier verschiedene Begriffe der Natur nebeneinander stehen, welche spätestens in den 1960er Jahren des 20. Jahrhunderts obsolet geworden sind. Der erste Naturbegriff, den Radkau heranzieht, macht die Sexualität zur menschlichen Natur; ein zweiter Naturbegriff sucht die Natur des Menschen in Aggressivität und Hass; ein dritter Naturbegriff zeichnet die Natur als Schicksal und kosmische Macht; ein vierter Naturbegriff ist schließlich sozialdarwinistisch geprägt.     Abstract: Abstract: Der für den Kasseler Soziologiekongress gewählte Titel "Die Natur der Gesellschaft" eröffnet unterschiedliche Bedeutungsfelder: Zum einen geht es um den Anspruch mancher Naturwissenschaftler, abschließende Erklärungen zu liefern, welche die Sozial- und Kulturwissenschaften vielleicht sogar überflüssig machen könnten. Mit diesem Kampf der Disziplinen war stets auch die Frage verbunden, ob es eher "die Gesellschaft" oder "das Leben" sei, durch die man zu einem Verständnis der Existenzbedingungen des Menschen kommen könne. Zum anderen ergab sich eine Herausforderung für die Soziologie durch reduktionistische naturwissenschaftliche Erklärungsansätze und deren große öffentliche Resonanz. Die Formulierung "Natur der Gesellschaft", die sich schon bei Georg Simmel findet, weist vor diesem Hintergrund auf die soziale Konstruktion von äußerer und innerer Natur sowie auf die sozialen und soziologischen Verständnisse naturaler Voraussetzungen des menschlichen Lebens hin.     Abstract: Abstract: "Zahlreiche Analysen, die aus der Perspektive verstehender Soziologie, entweder in weberianischer oder aber in phänomenologisch fundierter Variante vorgelegt werden, bewegen sich auf einer sog. 'mikro-soziologischen' Ebene. Man sollte sich durch diesen Zuschnitt jedoch nicht täuschen lassen. Denn seine Begründung findet dieser keineswegs in irgendwelchen vermeintlichen Beschränkungen, die diesen soziologischen Perspektiven etwa inhärent wären, wie ihre Kritiker so gerne glauben machen wollen. Ihren Grund haben sie vielmehr ausschließlich im empirischen Material, dass die entsprechenden Untersuchungen zugrunde legen.     Abstract: Abstract: "Das Konzept sozialer Mechanismen gilt derzeit als vielversprechende Alternative zum deduktiv-nomologischen Erklärungsmodell und daran orientierten quantitativen und komparativen Forschungsstrategien. Es soll der Historizität des Gegenstandsbereichs der Soziologie Rechnung tragen, ohne dabei den Anspruch generalisierbarer Kausalerklärung aufzugeben. Die grundlagentheoretischen Probleme dieses Versuches, den Gegensatz zwischen nomothetischem und idiographischem Wissenschaftsverständnis zu überwinden, verdienen intensiv diskutiert zu werden. Dazu gehört nicht zuletzt die zugrunde gelegte Sozialontologie. Das der Biologie entlehnte Konzept der Mechanismen ist Bestandteil eines Forschungsprogramms, das beobachtete Phänomene durch Prozesse auf einer 'niedrigeren' Realitätsebene kausal zu rekonstruieren beabsichtigt. Dies ist erstaunlich, wenn man bedenkt, dass Mannheim selbst die Bedeutung von Generationseffekten für die Dynamik der Geisteswissenschaften betont.     Abstract: Abstract: "Der in Deutschland seit Anfang der 1990er Jahre institutionalisierte umweltsoziologische Diskurs ist geprägt vom Topos der aus der Soziologie ausgegrenzten Natur. Der Soziologie wird vorgeworfen, mit der Perspektive auf die soziale Realität die andere Realität der Natur aus dem Blick verloren zu haben. Seither testet die Umweltsoziologie verschiedene soziologische Theorieprogramme daraufhin, ob in ihnen Natur eine Rolle spielt oder nicht. Niklas Luhmanns Systemtheorie hat in diesem Test besonders schlecht abgeschnitten. Der systemtheoretische Umweltbegriff, so der Vorwurf, blende den ökologischen und physischen Umweltbegriff völlig aus. Diese Kritik an Luhmann hat dazu geführt, dass eine systematische Auseinandersetzung mit dem umweltsoziologischen Potenzial der Systemtheorie Desiderat geblieben ist. Die Daseinanalytik Martin Heideggers und die Kritik der soziologischen Vernunft" (Hrsg. J. Weiß) eröffnet wurde, und widmete sich der Daseinanalytik Heideggers als Form und Medium der soziologischen Selbstreflexion. Anders aber als die Poststrukturalisten, die zu Beginn der 70er Jahre Ähnliches verkündet hatten, stellen diese Wissenschaftler nicht den Diskurs, sondern das Gehirn bzw. genauer: das in den Gehirnschaltungen somatisierte Wissen als Urgrund und Ursprung menschlichen Tuns vor.     Abstract: Abstract: Viele Vorläufer des soziologischen Denkens waren mit der Mathematik und den Naturwissenschaften vertraut. Sie waren für die Klassiker ein Maßstab und ein Modell für die noch junge Soziologie. Der wohl folgenreichste Bezug zur Biologie stellte Niklas Luhmanns Theorie der Selbstreferenz sozialer Systeme dar. Der Beitrag diskutiert die Verbindungen zwischen naturwissenschaftlichem Denken und Gesellschaftstheorie. Dies hat zur Konsequenz, dass abstrakte Kategorien wie "Systeme", "Anpassung", "Zielerreichung" u. ä. ihres sozialen, historischen und politischen Sinns beraubt werden. Die Frage, welche Ziele mit welchen Mitteln anzustreben sind, ist ebenso eine originär politische wie die, an welche Rahmenbedingungen sich ein System anpassen soll.     Abstract: Abstract: "Eine soziologische Bestimmung des Begriffs 'Politik' wird diese als strukturell neutral gegen den Unterschied von Gleichheit und Ungleichheit bestimmen müssen. Entsprechend wird ein strukturtheoretisches Argument entwickelt, welches jede Normierung von Handlungen und damit auch jedes Recht per se als ungleichheitskonstituierend ausweist. Vergesellschaftung bedeutet danach bzw. ist als Synonym aufzufassen für die Transformation eines (hypothetisch erwogenen) Raums natürlicher Ungleichheit in einem Raum kulturell institutionalisierter Ungleichwertigkeit, d.h. Vergesellschaftung muss verstanden werden als Prozess der Generierung einer herrschaftssoziologisch relevanten Differenzierungsform sozialer Wirklichkeit. Dass sich viele Gesellschaften der Leitidee einer den - wie auch immer verstandenen - Prinzipien der Gerechtigkeit und Gleichheit verpflichteten sozialen Ordnung verschreiben, indiziert in dieser Perspektive dann lediglich einen Wandel sozio-kulturell etablierter Legitimierun

    Abstract: Abstract: Auf die mit der Herausbildung einer "neuen Wissensordnung" einher gehenden Herausforderungen hat die Soziologie noch keine Antwort gefunden. Für die Soziologie wird in diesem Zusammenhang eine Neubeschreibung des Verhältnisses von Wissenschaft und Praxis von zentraler Bedeutung sein. Die systematisch betriebene Abschottung von Wissenschaft und Praxis stellt die zentrale Schwäche der Soziologie dar. Zur Überwindung dieser Schwäche zeichnen sich zwei Wege ab. Der erste Weg besteht in einer Rückbettung eines Teils der Wissensproduktion in die gesellschaftliche Praxis und damit verbunden in einer Reflexion der eigenen Produktionsweise. Der zweite Weg besteht in der Herausbildung systematischer Formen der Kooperation zwischen den im Wissenschaftsfeld arbeitenden und den im Praxisfeld tätigen Soziologen. (ICE2)

    Abstract: Abstract: Die Deutsche Gesellschaft für Soziologie, ehedem eine Vereinigung von Wissenschaftlern für Wissenschaftler, hat mit der Erweiterung der Mitgliedschaft für Nicht-Wissenschaftler ein Zeichen gesetzt, das eine erhebliche Verunsicherung der Disziplin signalisiert. Diese Verunsicherung wir auch in den organisationalen Ausformungen der Soziologie an deutschen Hochschulen sichtbar, exemplarisch am Beispiel der "Lehrforschungsprojekte", die Forschung nicht akzeptablen Restriktionen unterwerfen. Das Modell, anhand dessen die Lernenden in die Forschung eingeführt werden, muss vielmehr die eigene Forschung der Lehrenden sein, deren Offenheit in der Lehre noch durchscheint. Mit dem Bachelor-Studiengang - der groteskerweise sowohl berufsvorbereitend als auch generalistisch sein soll - wird dagegen eine Verschulung des Soziologiestudiums betrieben. Diese Studiengänge degradieren die Soziologie zum Nebenfachangebot für andere Studiengänge. Die deutsche Soziologie läuft Gefahr, zwischen der Scylla

    Abstract: Abstract: "Die deutsche Soziologie hat die gesellschaftlichen Ungleichheiten nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg ganz unterschiedlich interpretiert und meinte stets, es käme darauf an, sie zu verändern. Folgte man diesen Deutungen so hätten sich eine klassenlose und nivellierte Mittelstandsgesellschaft, zwiebelförmige Schichtungen, verschärfte Klassenkonflikte, horizontale Disparitäten und 'neue' Ungleichheiten, individualisierte Milieus, eine Unterklasse der Überflüssigen, soziale Exklusionen, die Unterschichtung Ostdeutschlands und die geschlossene PISA-Gesellschaft nacheinander abgelöst. Tatsächlich verweisen sehr viele empirische Befunde auf eine erhebliche zeitliche Robustheit von Verteilungs- und Chancenungleichheiten und damit nicht nur auf die Wirklichkeitsschwäche der Soziologie, sondern auch auf deren primäres Engagement im Sinngeschäft. Was ist aber der 'Sinn' der Ungleichheit? Gilt die Toquevillesche These von der nicht-umkehrbaren Dynamik eines historischen Egalisierungsprozesses noch? D
