Abstract:
In political anthropology the term "Big-Man", originally used by Marshall Sahlins to label political leaderschip in Melanesia, nowadays has come to denote a specific type of political leadership, characterized by authority derived from personal efforts and abilities through the allocation and reallocation of private resources. Private Politics is a collection of papers by social scientist from various backgrounds on Big-Man-like phenomena from all kinds of society, varying from the Canadian Arctic to South and Southeast Asia, from Dom Mintoff's Malta to the European Neolithic. Some of the old ideas and propositions associated with the concept are substantiated and validated with new data. Apart from that, some contributions have lead to a rephrasing of the questions and a rethinking of previous theories. (Umschlagtext)
