Abstract: For centuries ceramic has been a central feature of Chinese art and culture. It was employed in everyday life and served ritualistic purposes, also as funerary objects. The preeminent Heribert Meurer Collection of 175 high-quality pieces dating from 1050 BC to AD 1368 ? which up until now has remained unpublished ? offers an impressive panorama of the artefacts? roles as well as vessel forms and techniques of early Chinese ceramic, all complemented by 29 objects from the GRASSI Museum Leipzig, where the collection was endowed. The focal points of the collection are the ceramics of the Tang and Song dynasties. Examples of the popular 'Sancai' (tricolour) lead glaze, 'Changsha' and 'Cizhou' wares, 'Celadon' porcelain from Yaozhou, Longquan and Jingdezhen and 'Jian' and 'Jizhou' black ware illustrate the wealth, diversity, high quality and exceptional appeal of early Chinese ceramics. Abstract: For centuries, China's export arts--jade, silks, porcelains, and, more recently, cinema--have fuelled Western fantasies of an exotic East and served as enduring sources of inspiration for fashion. This stunning publication explores the influence of Chinese aesthetics on designers, including Giorgio Armani, Christian Dior, Jean Paul Gaultier, Karl Lagerfeld, Ralph Lauren, Alexander McQueen and Yves Saint Laurent. Drawing upon Chinese decorative arts, cinema and costume--notably imperial court robes, the close-fitting cheongsam and the unisex Mao suit--their designs are fantastical pastiches of anachronistic motifs. As in the game of "telephone"--which the British call "Chinese whispers"--the process of cultural translation transforms the source material into ingeniously original fashions that are products solely of the designers imaginations. Exhibition: The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA (07.05-16.08.2015)

Abstract: "A landmark presentation that will radically redefine our understanding of Africa's relationship with the West, Kongo: Power and Majesty, opening at The Metropolitan Museum of Art this September, will focus on one of the continent's most influential artistic traditions, from the earliest moment of direct engagement between African and European leaders at the end of the 15th century through the early 20th century. The creative output of Kongo artists of Central Africa will be represented by 134 works drawn from more than 50 institutional and private collections across Europe and the United States, reflecting five hundred years of encounters and shifting relations between European and Kongo leaders. From a dynamic assembly of 15 monumental power figures to elegantly carved ivories and finely woven textiles, the exhibition will explore how the talents of Central Africa's most gifted artists were directed toward articulating a culturally distinct vernacular of power."--Metropolitan Museum of Art website

Abstract: "Armor and weaponry were central to Islamic culture not only as a means of conquest and the spread of the faith, but also as symbols of status, wealth, and power. The finest arms were made by master craftsmen working with the leading designers, goldsmiths, and jewelers, whose work transformed utilitarian military equipment into courtly works of art. This book reveals the diversity and artistic quality of one of the most important and encyclopedic collections of its kind in the West. The Metropolitan Museum's holdings span ten centuries and include representative pieces from almost every Islamic culture from Spain to the Caucasus. Presenting 126 objects, each handsomely photographed and richly documented with a detailed description of discussion of its technical, historical, and artistic importance, this overview of the Met's holdings is supplemented by an introductory essay on the formation of the collection, and appendixes on iconography and on Turkman-style armor." -- Publisher's description
Abstract: "From its origins in the 7th century, armor and weaponry were central to Islamic culture not only as a means of conquest and the spread of faith, but also as symbols of status, wealth, and power. More than 120 exceptional examples from the renowned collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art are presented in detail to demonstrate the remarkable craftsmanship and beauty of Islamic arms and armor. These diverse objects, which have never been catalogued or published in detail, span ten centuries and represent nearly every Islamic culture, from Spain to the Caucasus. Among these masterpieces are rare early works, such as the oldest documented Islamic sword, and fine examples of decorated helmets and body armor from late-15th-century Iran and Anatolia. Also included are lavish gem-studded weapons from royal courts in the Ottoman world and India. Each piece is handsomely photographed, with a detailed discussion of its technical, historical, and artistic importance. Made by master artisans in conjunction with leading designers, goldsmiths, and jewelers, these stunning objects demonstrate how utilitarian military equipment could be transformed into striking and extravagant works of art."--YaleBooks website
