Abstract: A complete guide to understanding, designing, and deploying Layer 2 VPN technologies and pseudowire emulation applications Evaluate market drivers for Layer 2 VPNs Understand the architectural frame-work and choices for Layer 2 VPNs, including AToM and L2TPv3 Grasp the essentials of Layer 2 LAN and WAN technologies Examine the theoretical and operational details of MPLS and LDP as they pertain to AToM Understand the theoretical and operational details of Layer 2 protocols over L2TPv3 in IP networks Learn about Layer 2 VPN bridged and routed interworking and Layer 2 local switching Understand the operation and application of Virtual Private LAN Services (VPLS) Learn about foundation and advanced AToM and L2TPv3 topics through an extensive collection of case studies The historical disconnect between legacy Layer 2 and Layer 3 VPN solutions has forced service providers to build, operate, and maintain separate infrastructures to accommodate various VPN access technologies. This costly proposition, however, is no longer necessary. As part of its new Unified VPN Suite, Cisco Systems® now offers next-generation Layer 2 VPN services like Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol version 3 (L2TPv3) and Any Transport over MPLS (AToM) that enable service providers to offer Frame Relay, ATM, Ethernet, and leased-line services over a common IP/MPLS core network. By unifying multiple network layers and providing an integrated set of software services and management tools over this infrastructure, the Cisco® Layer 2 VPN solution enables established carriers, IP-oriented ISP/CLECs, and large enterprise customers (LECs) to reach a broader set of potential VPN customers and offer truly global VPNs. Layer 2 VPN Architectures is a comprehensive guide to consolidating network infrastructures and extending VPN services. The book opens by discussing Layer 2 VPN applications utilizing both AToM and L2TPv3 protocols and comparing Layer 3 versus Layer 2 provider-provisioned VPNs. In addition to describing the concepts related to Layer 2 VPNs, this book provides an extensive collection of case studies that show you how these technologies and architectures work. The case studies include both AToM and L2TPv3 and reveal real-world service provider and enterprise design problems and solutions with hands-on configuration examples and implementation details. The case studies include all Layer 2 technologies transported using AToM and L2TPv3 pseudowires, including Ethernet, Ethernet VLAN, HD...

Abstract: Plan, design, and configure high-speed fiber-optic networks Coverage includes: Configuring ONS 15454 and ONS 15327 platforms Architecture for building Metropolitan Ethernet Transparent LAN Services (TLS) Packet over SONET (PoS) network design, configuration, and verification Inner workings of dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM), including operability with the ONS 15216 product family Principles of Dynamic Packet Transport (DPT) SONET background, including structures, components, and network design Bonus case studies, which challenge you to select equipment and design a metro optical network Fiber-optic networking has several significant advantages over traditional wired and wireless networks: optical signals can travel much farther than electrical signals, are more secure, are resistant to electromagnetic interference, and have the potential to provide bandwidth in the terabits per second range (1000 Gbps). Service providers must satisfy the always-increasing networking demands of customers while keeping costs to a minimum. Optical networks must meet the challenge of supporting multiple types of transmissions including voice, video, and data traffic. Although time-division multiplexing (TDM) has provided a growth path for services, it is more constrained than IP + Optical strategies like the Cisco Dynamic Packet Transport (Resilient Packet Ring). The Cisco Systems® end-to-end IP + Optical networking strategy provides an intelligent converged network in which optical infrastructures can be used to their fullest potential. While most reference books focus on the theory involved in SONET and optical infrastructures, Cisco Self-Study: Building Cisco Metro Optical Networks (METRO) focuses on the practical application of planning and configuring optical networks that involve SONET, DWDM, Metropolitan Ethernet, Packet over SONET, and Dynamic Packet Transport (Resilient Packet Ring). Cisco Self-Study: Building Cisco Metro Optical Networks (METRO) is part of a recommended learning path from Cisco Systems that can include simulation and hands-on training from authorized Cisco Learning Partners and self-study products from Cisco Press. To find out more about instructor-led training, e-learning, and hands-on instruction offered by authorized Cisco Learning Partners worldwide, please visit www.cisco.com/go/authorizedtraining. Abstract: "The author has hit on something here; particularly the fact that it is high time we quit thinking that treating everyone the same is somehow fair. Like it or not, the realities uncovered in this book are just that...real! And if you plan to be a significant player in the workplace of the future, I suggest you take them seriously, because your success depends on it. As John says, 'As goes the world, so goes the workplace.'" -Richard Irwin, President and CEO, IntegraCare Corporation "John captures a refreshing, winning formula in a practical, simple context to leverage weirdness into creativity and innovation, the core of sustainable competitive advantage and success. Rejoice in and celebrate our weirdos!" -James E. Hoffman, Jr., President, Catalyst Consultants, LLC, and the CEO Forum of Pittsburgh "To hear John Putzier tell it, there are so many 'weirdos in the workplace' that you're almost weird if you're...not. But if you're a manager, don't let how weird someone is distract you from what really matters-how well they're performing. Here's help for jumping to the right conclusions about people." -Maureen Anderson, Host, "The Career Clinic®" radio program "This book gives a dose of medicine to cure the 'paradigm bug' that plagues most of us in the business world. The author takes complex situations and concepts and boils them down to their bare essence. I just wish I could have him by my side when they happen to me! I guess having this book is the next best thing." -Mark A. Treat, Client Services Organization Development, Acxiom Corporation, CMTII Group "Putzier has nailed the American paradox: the tension between individuality and the need for organized group effort. His decision-making and problem-solving tools help to resolve this classic cultural conflict: the value of 'weird' thinking, diversity, and individuality pushing the bounds of what is normal, versus the utility of social norms in groups. His book is a primer for designing organizations, departments, or teams to maximize off-center behavior. This balance, already a rare one, will increase in importance as work becomes delocalized, cross-disciplinary, and global. This book provides basic knowledge for any company committed to innovation or excellence-or just competitive advantage." -Margaret J. Abstract: "Eric Evans has written a fantastic book on how you can make the design of your software match your mental model of the problem domain you are addressing. "His book is very compatible with XP. It is not about drawing pictures of a domain; it is about how you think of it, the language you use to talk about it, and how you organize your software to reflect your improving understanding of it. Eric thinks that learning about your problem domain is as likely to happen at the end of your project as at the beginning, and so refactoring is a big part of his technique. "The book is a fun read. Eric has lots of interesting stories, and he has a way with words. I see this book as essential reading for software developers-it is a future classic." - Ralph Johnson , author of Design Patterns "If you don't think you are getting value from your investment in object-oriented programming, this book will tell you what you've forgotten to do. "Eric Evans convincingly argues for the importance of domain modeling as the central focus of development and provides a solid framework and set of techniques for accomplishing it. This is timeless wisdom, and will hold up long after the methodologies du jour have gone out of fashion." - Dave Collins , author of Designing Object-Oriented User Interfaces "Eric weaves real-world experience modeling-and building-business applications into a practical, useful book. Written from the perspective of a trusted practitioner, Eric's descriptions of ubiquitous language, the benefits of sharing models with users, object life-cycle management, logical and physical application structuring, and the process and results of deep refactoring are major contributions to our field." - Luke Hohmann , author of Beyond Software Architecture "This book belongs on the shelf of every thoughtful software developer." - Kent Beck "What Eric has managed to capture is a part of the design process that experienced object designers have always used, but that we have been singularly unsuccessful as a group in conveying to the rest of the industry. We've given away bits and pieces of this knowledge...but we've never organized and systematized the principles of building domain logic. This book is important." - Kyle Brown , author of Enterprise Java™ Programming with IBM ® WebSphere ® The software development community widely acknowledges that domain modeling is central to software design. Through domain models, software developers are able to express rich functi...

Abstract: " We the Media , has become something of a bible for those who believe the online medium will change journalism for the better." -Financial Times Big Media has lost its monopoly on the news, thanks to the Internet. Now that it's possible to publish in real time to a worldwide audience, a new breed of grassroots journalists are taking the news into their own hands. Armed with laptops, cell phones, and digital cameras, these readers-turned-reporters are transforming the news from a lecture into a conversation. In We the Media , nationally acclaimed newspaper columnist and blogger Dan Gillmor tells the story of this emerging phenomenon and sheds light on this deep shift in how we make--and consume--the news. Gillmor shows how anyone can produce the news, using personal blogs, Internet chat groups, email, and a host of other tools. He sends a wake-up call tonewsmakers-politicians, business executives, celebrities-and the marketers and PR flacks who promote them. He explains how to successfully play by the rules of this new era and shift from "control" to "engagement." And he makes a strong case to his fell journalists that, in the face of a plethora of Internet-fueled news vehicles, they must change or become irrelevant. Journalism in the 21st century will be fundamentally different from the Big Media oligarchy that prevails today. We the Media casts light on the future of journalism, and invites us all to be part of it. Dan Gillmor is founder of Grassroots Media Inc., a project aimed at enabling grassroots journalism and expanding its reach. The company's first launch is Bayosphere.com, a site "of, by, and for the San Francisco Bay Area." Dan Gillmor is the founder of the Center for Citizen Media, a project to enable and expand reach of grassroots media. From 1994-2004, Gillmor was a columnist at the San Jose Mercury News , Silicon Valley's daily newspaper, and wrote a weblog for SiliconValley.com. He joined the Mercury News after six years with the Detroit Free Press . Before that, he was with the Kansas City Times and several newspapers in Vermont. He has won or shared in several regional and national journalism awards. Before becoming a journalist he played music professionally for seven years.

Abstract: This IBM Redbooks publication examines business process integration using Business Process Choreographer to build solutions that help to streamline the supply chain process. We provide a sample scenario that integrates business processes to streamline a supply chain showing how suppliers and customers can use global repositories to synchronize data. The sample scenario discussed in this publication was initially implemented using WebSphere Application Server Enterprise Process Choreographer to aggregate and transform supplier product data. Data is then published to a global repository using the WebSphere Web Services Gateway, and also loaded to a catalog that uses a WebSphere Commerce portal. We take this existing scenario and detail how to migrate the business processes to run on WebSphere Business Integration Server Foundation V5.1. As part of this migration effort we describe how to use WebSphere Studio Application Developer Integration Edition V5.1 as the development environment for process migration. The migrated sample uses Business Process Execution Language (BPEL) processes. Please note that the additional material referenced in the text is not available from IBM.

Abstract: This IBM Redbooks publication provides information related to the viability of Linux as a client platform. It targets technical personnel who are involved in evaluating Linux as a possible client platform. It also targets administrators and support personnel who are responsible for supporting client systems. This book can also be helpful to anyone who is evaluating the potential of using Linux for enterprise client systems. However, the key focus is on environments where OS/2 is currently used. Many enterprises have been using OS/2 as a stable platform for critical enterprise client applications. However, as those enterprises look to the future, they look for a platform on which they can build a strategy that is open, standards-based, secure, and provides a cost-effective solution. Linux has become successful as a server platform in many of these same enterprises. It comes as no surprise that these enterprises also want to evaluate the possibility of including Linux for many of their client systems. This book describes platform and functional considerations for choosing Linux as a client platform. It examines techniques and facilities for administering Linux clients, coexistence of Linux clients with other platforms, and a technique to easily install Linux clients based on the well-known OS/2-based CID methodology. Please note that the additional material referenced in the text is not available from IBM.

Abstract: This book contains everything you need to make your application program support IPv6. IPv6 socket APIs (RFC2553) are fully described with real-world examples. It covers security, a great concern these days. To secure the Internet infrastructure, every developer has to take a security stance - to audit every line of code, to use proper API and write correct and secure code as much as possible. To achieve this goal, the examples presented in this book are implemented with a security stance. Also, the book leads you to write secure programs. For instance, the book recommends against the use of some of the IPv6 standard APIs - unfortunately, there are some IPv6 APIs that are inherently insecure, so the book tries to avoid (and discourage) the use of such APIs. Another key issue is portability. The examples in the book should be applicable to any of UNIX based operating systems, MacOS X, and Windows XP. * Covers the new protocol just adopted by the Dept of Defense for future systems * Deals with security concerns, including spam and email, by presenting the best programming standards * Fully describes IPv6 socket APIs (RFC2553) using real-world examples * Allows for portability to UNIX-based operating systems, MacOS X, and Windows XP

Abstract: The beginning of the new century sees the data center with a mix of work, hardware, and operating systems previously undreamed of. Today’s challenge is to manage disparate systems with minimal effort and maximum reliability. People experienced in scheduling traditional host-based batch work must now manage distributed systems, and those working in the distributed environment must take responsibility for work running on the corporate OS/390 system. This IBM Redbooks publication considers how best to provide end-to-end scheduling using IBM Tivoli Workload Scheduler Version 8.2, both distributed (previously known as Maestro) and mainframe (previously known as OPC) components. In this book, we provide the information for installing the necessary Tivoli Workload Scheduler 8.2 software components and configuring them to communicate with each other. In addition to technical information, we consider various scenarios that may be encountered in the enterprise and suggest practical solutions. We describe how to manage work and dependencies across both environments using a single point of control. We believe that this book will be a valuable reference for IT specialists who implement end-to-end scheduling with Tivoli Workload Scheduler 8.2.

Abstract: Integrating distributed business applications is no easy task. Managing a heterogeneous distributed real-time environment is equally challenging. Integrated business environments can process huge volumes of messages per day. Messages are published, routed, transformed and consumed. The integrated environment has to deal with exception handling, performance bottlenecks, and changes in the participating systems. Components are distributed across different machines in different locations. A Business Integration Management System addresses these requirements and provides the best approach or set of approaches that can be followed to manage an integrated business environment. This IBM Redbooks publication is a case study of a real-life, business process, re-engineering exercise. We follow the pilot phase of this exercise from the design of a solution to modeling of the complex business processes, building these processes, and deploying them to a run-time environment. We also address many of the issues that surround an undertaking such as this and follow up on the success of the pilot.

Abstract: Building on the cool ideal, this IBM® IBM Redbooks publication describes V5 enhancements to many of the TCP/IP applications. The two book predecessors, combined, have been downloaded over 97,000 times: for V3, Cool Title About the AS/400 and Internet, SG24-4815-01, and V4 TCP/IP for AS/400: More Cool Things Than Ever, SG24-5190-00. Both of these extremely popular books are “aggregators” — a place to bring together many different technologies all in one place to have a common theme; teach the basics. That is, teach what the functions can do, define scenarios, and then implement the scenarios in a how-to fashion. Many of the topics covered in those earlier books, such as HTTP, Digital Certificates, and even TCP/IP have grown to the point now that they require their own Redbooks™ . In this book, we cover Telnet, FTP, IPP, NTP, SMTP, and making VPN connections with the iSeries™ , to and from the Internet. Abstract: This IBM Redbooks publication provides a first look at the Solution Installation capability that is a key component of the IBM Autonomic Computing initiative. Autonomic computing technologies enable complex computing systems to be self-configuring, self-healing, self-optimizing, and self-protecting. One aspect of this is the ability to automate the change management processes associated with deploying and managing software required for business solutions. The Solution Installation technologies that are described are evolving and will be enhanced over time. This publication provides the reader with an opportunity to understand the underlying concepts and facilities. This publication is based on Version 1.2 of the Solution Installation toolkit and describes both architectural concepts as well as specific examples that apply to the current version. We attempt to make clear when a key architectural concept is not fully implemented at this time. Readers of this book will gain an understanding of the basic concepts, and how the architecture described will provide business value as it becomes fully implemented and utilized by IBM and other software vendors. Please note that the additional material referenced in the text is not available from IBM.

Abstract: Designing, implementing, and operating a wireless sensor network involves a wide range of disciplines and many application-specific constraints. To make sense of and take advantage of these systems, a holistic approach is needed—and this is precisely what Wireless Sensor Networks delivers. Inside, two eminent researchers review the diverse technologies and techniques that interact in today’s wireless sensor networks. At every step, they are guided by the high-level information-processing tasks that determine how these networks are architected and administered. Zhao and Guibas begin with the canonical problem of localizing and tracking moving objects, then systematically examine the many fundamental sensor network issues that spring from it, including network discovery, service establishment, data routing and aggregation, query processing, programming models, and system organization. The understanding gained as a result—how different layers support the needs of different applications, and how a wireless sensor network should be built to optimize performance and economy—is sure to endure as individual component technologies come and go. ·Written for practitioners, researchers, and students and relevant to all application areas, including environmental monitoring, industrial sensing and diagnostics, automotive and transportation, security and surveillance, military and battlefield uses, and large-scale infrastructural maintenance. ·Skillfully integrates the many disciplines at work in wireless sensor network design: signal processing and estimation, communication theory and protocols, distributed algorithms and databases, probabilistic reasoning, energy-aware computing, design methodologies, evaluation metrics, and more. ·Demonstrates how querying, data routing, and network self-organization can support high-level information-processing tasks.

Abstract: Reduce costs, improve efficiencies, and focus on your core business Leverage your technology infrastructure to save money and virtualize processes. Discover the principles behind BPV and the ways in which they can benefit your business. Benefit from incremental cost savings, maximizing your business' ROI. Learn from real-world case studies that illustrate best practices. Understand the solution-provider market, maximizing the impact of your investment. The dot-com collapse generally discredited the idea of leveraging the Internet to build viable businesses. Many market pundits have decried the concept without examining the underlying dynamics associated with these companies' failures. The truth is, prior business models were built on a flawed business case, not bad technology. In fact, the dot-com bubble created a whole new class of automation that, when applied to conventional businesses, can dramatically improve time to market, competitive response, and customer interaction. This is not virtual business; this is business process virtualization (BPV), and enterprises that don't grasp and apply the principals of BPV will rapidly be rendered obsolete by those that do, being quickly outmaneuvered and displaced in the market. BPV is the application of networked, intelligent IT infrastructure to enhance skilled personnel, processes, and assets, which enables companies to improve efficiencies, increase competitive advantage, heighten brand awareness, reduce costs, and improve bottom line revenues. Unlike business process automation, BPV focuses on new management approaches for personnel and technology, signaling a fundamental change in the way that we think about business and its objectives. While reading The Case for Virtual Business Processes , you will understand why BPV is critical to the long-term viability of your business, while learning how to leverage your intelligent networked infrastructure using leading-edge products and technologies from Cisco Systems. This volume is in the Network Business Series offered by Cisco Press. Books in this series provide IT executives, decision makers, and networking professionals with pertinent information on today's most important technologies and business strategies.

Abstract: NFS Version 4 (NFS V4) is the latest defined client-to-server protocol for NFS. A significant upgrade from NFS V3, it was defined under the IETF framework by many contributors. NFS V4 introduces major changes to the way NFS has been implemented and used before now, including stronger security, wide area network sharing, and broader platform adaptability. This IBM Redbooks publication is intended to provide a broad understanding of NFS V4 and specific AIX NFS V4 implementation details. It discusses considerations for deployment of NFS V4, with a focus on exploiting the stronger security features of the new protocol. In the initial implementation of NFS V4 in AIX 5.3, the most important functional differences are related to security. Chapter 3 and parts of the planning and implementation chapters in Part 2 cover this topic in detail.

Abstract: This IBM Redbooks publication (along with its companion volume On demand Operating Environment: Managing the Infrastructure, SG24-6634), provides an insight into the kind of Operating Environment required to support an on demand business. It provides an overview of the architecture of an on demand Operating Environment and describes in detail the components that are required to create business flexibility through integration. To meet the business needs of being responsive, variable, focused, and resilient, an on demand Operating Environment must be integrated, autonomic, virtualized, and open. Though these attributes are all interrelated, this book focuses on the integration component as the key enabler of business flexibility. A complete on demand Operating Environment is a vision and a goal that many enterprises aspire to reach. However, it is not something that will be attained overnight or by installing a specific set of products. It is something that will be reached through a step-wise progression. This book provides descriptions of several approaches that one can choose to start implementing pieces of an on demand Operating Environment today. Which approach is right for the reader will depend on their specific business environment and their immediate needs. Our objective is to help the reader better understand what an on demand Operating Environment is and how they can take steps today to start putting one in place. This book does not go into detailed implementation plans for each technology or product it references, but rather provides a level of information sufficient for the reader to start building a strategy and architecture best suited for their needs. Product-specific details can be obtained from product documentation and product-related redbooks.

Abstract: Software Design for Engineers and Scientists integrates three core areas of computing: . Software engineering - including both traditional methods and the insights of 'extreme programming' . Program design - including the analysis of data structures and algorithms . Practical object-oriented programming Without assuming prior knowledge of any particular programming language, and avoiding the need for students to learn from separate, specialised Computer Science texts, John Robinson takes the reader from small-scale programing to competence in large software projects, all within one volume. Copious examples and case studies are provided in C++ and students can access complementary examples in Java on an accompanying website. The book is especially suitable for undergraduates in the natural sciences and all branches of engineering who have some knowledge of computing basics, and now need to understand and apply software design to tasks like data analysis, simulation, signal processing or visualisation. John Robinson introduces both software theory and its application to problem solving using a range of design principles, applied to the creation of medium-sized systems, providing key methods and tools for designing reliable, efficient, maintainable programs. The case studies are presented within scientific contexts to illustrate all aspects of the design process, allowing students to relate theory to real-world applications. All listings are available on this book’s companion website. · Core computing topics - usually found in separate specialised texts - presented to meet the specific requirements of science and engineering students · Demonstrates good practice through applications, case studies and worked examples based in real-world contexts · Additional website resources are available, including useful links and further worked examples using Java

Abstract: In September 2003, Macromedia released Flash MX 2004, and with it, ActionScript 2.0, a dramatically improved version of Flash's programming language. ActionScript 2.0 introduces a formal object-oriented programming syntax and methodology for creating Flash applications. From a developer's perspective, the new OOP-based techniques in ActionScript 2.0 make applications more natural to plan and conceptualize, more stable, more reusable across projects, easier to maintain, change, and expand upon, and much more. In short, they enhance the entire development process. In Essential ActionScript 2.0 , bestselling author Colin Moock--one of the most universally respected developers in the Flash community--covers everything you'll need to know about the new ActionScript language and its methodologies for producing movies, animation, and applications on the web. Moock guides readers through this important new territory with his trademark easy-to-understand style and expertise. Moock's goal throughout the book is not just to get you to use object-oriented programming in your daily Flash work: he wants you to reap the benefits of OOP; he wants you to understand ActionScript 2.0 completely. And without question, Moock is the author who can make this happen. Essential ActionScript 2.0 begins with a tour of the language, including the fundamentals of object-oriented concepts, syntax, and usage. Those who are new to OOP will learn the basics and how to apply their understanding. Those who are familiar with OOP will leverage their prior experience to learn about Flash-based OOP. The next part of the book shows how to structure entire applications with ActionScript 2.0, teaching you best practices and techniques to build scalable, extensible, stable apps. Next, you'll explore a variety of approaches to various programming situations by applying object-oriented programming strategies, known as design patterns, to Flash. Experienced Flash developers and programmers coming from other languages will enjoy the sheer depth of Moocks's coverage and expertise in Essential ActionScript 2.0 . Novice programmers will appreciate the frequent, low-jargon explanations that are often glossed over by advanced programming books. As usual, Moock guarantees quality and accuracy by working closely with Macromedia Flash engineers, including Rebecca Sun, lead developer of ActionScript 2.0. Whether you're ready to make the move to ActionScript 2.0 now or simply assessing it for the fu...

Abstract: The view presented in The Internet and Its Protocols is at once broad and deep. It covers all the common protocols and how they combine to create the Internet in its totality. More importantly, it describes each one completely, examining the requirements it addresses and the exact means by which it does its job. These descriptions include message flows, full message formats, and message exchanges for normal and error operation. They are supported by numerous diagrams and tables. This book's comparative approach gives you something more valuable: insight into the decisions you face as you build and maintain your network, network device, or network application. Author Adrian Farrel’s experience and advice will dramatically smooth your path as you work to offer improved performance and a wider range of services. * Provides comprehensive, in-depth, and comparative coverage of the Internet Protocol (both IPv4 and IPv6) and its many related technologies. * Written for developers, operators, and managers, and designed to be used as both an overview and a reference. * Discusses major concepts in traffic engineering, providing detailed looks at MPLS and GMPLS and how they control both IP and non-IP traffic. * Covers protocols for governing routing and transport, and for managing switches, components, and the network as a whole, along with higher-level application protocols. * Offers thoughtful guidance on choosing between protocols, selecting features within a protocol, and other service- and performance-related decisions.

Abstract: This IBM Redbooks publication discusses DB2 UDB for Linux on iSeries. We provide the installation and configuration steps for DB2 UDB for Linux on iSeries. We also present connectivity scenarios between OS/400 resources and Linux resources. With V8.1, DB2 UDB for Linux is available for running in a Linux partition on an IBM eServer iSeries system. Linux is one of the fastest growing operating systems in the industry today. Linux is quickly becoming a key enabler for e-business applications that are demanding more robust local database capabilities. Applications running in the Linux partition can certainly leverage DB2 UDB for iSeries through a variety of interfaces (DB2 Connect, JDBC, ODBC), and this is an excellent choice to leverage the low administration overhead, autonomic computing, and security benefits provided by DB2’s tight integration with OS/400. DB2 for Linux is an excellent choice to support Linux (or other client/server) applications when there is a need to have local data storage within the Linux application environment or to leverage specific features of DB2 UDB V8 such as Federated Database or Microsoft .NET Framework support.

Abstract: Small and medium-sized businesses are among the fastest-growing segments of the global economy. As these businesses strive to capture opportunities in a rapidly changing marketplace, they often turn to independent software vendors (ISVs) for the IT solutions they need. Large enterprises also require customized solutions to help them stay competitive in the global marketplace. This IBM Redbooks publication describes how ISVs and corporate information technology centers can use IBM Integrated Runtime V1.1 to deploy solutions to their customers quickly and efficiently. By reducing the complexity of deploying complete solutions, Integrated Runtime shortens time-to-market for ISVs and reduces time-to-productivity for users. The result is efficient deployment of solutions by ISVs and corporate technology departments, rapid access to new solutions by users, and improved customer satisfaction. This book is intended for: - ISVs and Information Technology departments who are evaluating Integrated Runtime - New users of Integrated Runtime - IBM client teams who want to demonstrate the benefits of Integrated Runtime to potential users - IBM teams and others who are responsible for supporting Integrated Runtime users Please note that the additional material referenced in the text is not available from IBM.

Abstract: This IBM Redbooks publication provides an example of the "ideal" Parallel Sysplex environment (one that is configured to deliver the highest levels of application availability), and describes the features and functions used in this environment. For each function, we describe briefly what it does and what its benefit is, and refer to the appropriate implementation documentation. In this document, we discuss how to configure hardware and software, and how to manage systems processes for maximum availability in a Parallel Sysplex environment. We discuss the basic concepts of continuous availability and describe a structured approach to developing and implementing a continuous availability solution. This document provides a list of items to consider for trying to achieve near-continuous application availability and should be used as a guide when creating a high-availability Parallel Sysplex. Information is provided in recommendations lists and will help you configure and manage your IT environment to meet your availability requirements. This publication is intended to help customers’ systems and operations personnel and IBM systems engineers to plan, implement, and use a Parallel Sysplex in order to get closer to a goal of continuous availability. It is not intended to be a guide to implementing or using Parallel Sysplex as such. It only covers topics related to continuous availability.

Abstract: "If you're a systems-level 32-bit or 64-bit Windows developer, whether using the Windows API directly or via .NET interop, you'll definitely want to take a look at this update to Johnson Hart's well-respected and well-loved book. Johnson starts with Windows history and cultural issues and moves through basic and advanced system services in a thoughtful, thorough manner. If Mr. Rogers wrote a book with David Cutler, this is what they'd come up with." –Chris Sells, Longhorn Content Strategist, Microsoft Corporation "While focusing on UNIX developers that are looking to augment their skills or simply jump ship, Windows System Programming, Third Edition is a book that even some seasoned systems-level Windows developers will undoubtedly find useful. This is not your average bland GUI treatise; Hart takes you down to the metal, explains all the relevant concepts clearly and in-depth, and gives you an extensive library of high-quality code examples that can be easily adapted for your own larger applications. Even if you've created server applications before, Windows System Programming will teach you new tricks, shed new light on concepts you thought you'd mastered, and offer new strategies for creating robust and secure solutions." –Klaus H. Probst, Senior Architect, Spherion Technology Services; Microsoft MVP "This book is quite easy to follow; there are clear explanations of everything. Even the explanation of the standards is readable! For a developer not familiar with developing with Windows, Hart's book also provides basic information on where Windows was and where it is today, plus a great explanation of how it is different from Posix and Unix." –Eric Landes, Microsoft MVP, www.aspalliance.com/corporatecoder "Even advanced developers will always need to have a book like this one on hand when the abstractions of a platform like .NET are inadequate or when they need to know more about how .NET is implemented. And the focus on low-level programming (specifically memory management and IO) and other non-GUI topics makes it stand out as superior among other Windows programming books. In keeping the GUI focus to a minimum, Hart's book is able to be comprehensive on the topics contained within." –Michael Davidson, IT Analyst Windows System Programming, Third Edition gives a solid grounding on using the core Windows APIs, includingWin64; is updated for Windows Server 2003, Windows XP, and the Microsoft Visual Studio .NET Framework, and has extensive exa...

Abstract: This IBM Redbooks publication describes the big phases in a business integration project. First, we discuss the planning and system design phase for a business integration infrastructure that should be able to support several business integration projects. When the planning and design is complete, we discuss the implementation of several run-time engines of a WebSphere Business Integration Server V4.2.2 implementation. We also cover the implementation steps for a development environment and an administration environment. The next phase is the development and testing of a business integration solution that can be deployed within the infrastructure. The integration solution combines the powers of the three run-time engines of WebSphere Business Integration Server V4.2.2, providing for human interaction, straight-through processing, and message brokering and aggregation. The last phase of a business integration project is the process of moving the solution to production and determining how to manage this solution, addressing such issues as how to stop and start components in a coordinated way, and where to find answers for run-time problems. The book ends with a discussion about performance tuning that is focused on WebSphere InterChange Server V4.2.2.
