    Kurzfassung: "Exploring Ireland's Viking-Age Towns explores the emergence of towns, urban lifestyles and urban identities in Ireland coinciding with the arrival of the Vikings and the appearance of the post-and-wattle Type 1 house. These houses reflect this crucial transition to urban living with its attendant changes for individuals, households, and society. Exploring Ireland's Viking-Age Towns uses household archaeology as a lens to explore the materiality, variability and day-to-day experiences of living in these houses. It moves from the intimate scale of individual households to the larger scale of Ireland's earliest urban communities. For the first time, this book considers how these houses were more than just buildings: they were homes, important places where people lived, worked and died. These new towns were busy places, with a multitude of people, ideas and things. This book uses the mass of archaeological data to undertake comparative analyses of houses and properties, artefact distribution patterns and access analysis studies to interrogate some 500 Viking-Age urban houses. This analysis is structured in three parts, an investigation of the houses, the households and the town. Exploring Ireland's Viking-Age Towns discusses how these new urban households managed their homes to create a sense of place and belonging in these new environments and allow themselves to develop a new, urban identity. This book is suited to advanced students and specialists of the Viking Age in Ireland but archaeologists and historians of the early medieval and Viking worlds will find much of interest here. Der Autor Thomas Schmidt ist seit 2011 Gastprofessor und seit 2013 Professor und Direktor des Studiengangs Theater und Orchestermanagement in Frankfurt am Main. Von 2003 bis 2012 war er geschäftsführender Direktor, bis 2013 Intendant des Deutschen Nationaltheaters Weimar. 2014 war er Gastprofessor an der Harvard University.

    Kurzfassung: Poverty and inequality have pervaded British society to this day, but this has not always been self-evident to contemporaries - popular understandings have depended on existing knowledge. Inequality Knowledge provides the first detailed history of the numbers about the gap between rich and poor. It shows how they were produced, used, and suppressed at times, and how activists, scientists, and journalists eventually wrestled control over the figures from the state. The book traces the making and the politics of statistical knowledge about economic inequality in the United Kingdom from the post-war era to the 1990s. What kind of knowledge was available to contemporaries about socio-economic disparities in Britain and how they evolved over time? How was this knowledge produced and by whom? What did policy makers and civil servants know about the extent of poverty and inequality in British society and to what extent did they take the distributional impact of their social and fiscal policies into account? Far from just a technical matter, inequality knowledge had far-reaching implications for key debates and the wider political culture in contemporary Britain. Historicizing inequality knowledge speaks to a long tradition of historical research about social class divisions and cultural representations of economic disparities in twentieth-century Britain.

    Kurzfassung: Obdachlose gehören zum städtischen Alltag. Sie sind sichtbar und werden zugleich kaum wahrgenommen. Nadine Recktenwald blickt in die historischen Räume der Obdachlosen wie Asyle, Notunterkünfte und selbstangeeignete Orte. Sie untersucht deren Erfahrungen mit urbanen Strukturen, sozialstaatlichen Maßnahmen und gesellschaftlicher In- und Exklusion. In der Weimarer Republik profitierten Obdachlose erstmals von kommunaler Sozialfürsorge. Zugleich blieb Obdachlosigkeit bis 1974 ein Straftatbestand. Diese Ambivalenz zwischen Fürsorge und Strafe ermöglichte Handlungsspielräume für die Betroffenen ebenso wie für die staatlichen Akteure. Insbesondere aber nicht nur im Nationalsozialismus wurden Obdachlose verdrängt und verfolgt. Mit einem raumanalytischen Ansatz, umfangreichen Quellen und Einzelbiografien erforscht die Autorin, wie Obdachlose spezifische soziale Praktiken ausbildeten, um ihre gesellschaftliche Position zu beeinflussen. Eindrucksvoll zeigt sie die Interaktionen der Betroffenen untereinander ebenso wie mit Ämtern, der Justiz und den städtischen Öffentlichkeiten. Eine aufschlussreiche Sozial- und Stadtgeschichte der Obdachlosen in der Weimarer Republik, im Nationalsozialismus und in der Bundesrepublik.

Behind the façade of vote-winning strategies, the far right has provided a substantive ideological engagement with the natural environment. Was bedeuten diese Spannungen heute? Maria Anna Willer untersucht Strukturen und Prozesse der Ausgrenzung in der Face-to-Face-Gesellschaft eines Dorfes am bayrischen Alpenrand zur Zeit der NS-Herrschaft und beleuchtet dessen Erinnerungskultur. In Anlehnung an Foucault beschreibt sie im Modell eines »Dispositivs der NS-Verfolgung« die engmaschigen Strukturen der Kontrolle und Überwachung sowie Widerstand und Hilfeleistungen als Kategorien der NS-Diktatur auf dem Dorf. Es zeigt sich: Nach 1945 ist eine Kontinuität der Ausgrenzung erkennbar, wenn die Erinnerung an Opfer der NS-Verfolgung verdrängt wird.

    Kurzfassung: 2014 konnte Ulrich Trebbin aufdecken, dass die Guillotine, mit der die Geschwister Scholl ermordet wurden, seit Jahrzehnten im Depot des Bayerischen Nationalmuseums in München vor der Öffentlichkeit verborgen wurde. Im Königreich Bayern wurden damit Menschen hingerichtet, die aus Lust, Hass oder Habgier gemordet hatten. Ab 1933 dann eliminierte der NS-Staat mit der Guillotine vor allem sogenannte "Volksschädlinge" und Widerstandskämpfer. Bekannt sind vielen noch die Mitglieder der Weißen Rose oder der "Räuber Kneißl", doch die allermeisten der insgesamt mehr als 1.300 Opfer des Fallbeils sind heute vergessen. 1945 schließlich ließ der Staat die Guillotine von der Bildfläche verschwinden. Bis heute. Denn sie ist mit einem Ausstellungsverbot belegt, und niemand darf sie sehen. Dieses Buch erzählt die Geschichte dieses schrecklichen und spannenden Gegenstandes - mit Fingerspitzengefühl, ohne Sensationsgier.

    Kurzfassung: Suizidalität zu erkennen, darauf richtig zu reagieren und Betroffene schließlich wieder zum Leben zu überzeugen, gehört zu den herausfordernden, aber auch alltäglichen psychiatrischen Aufgaben. Die Suizidforschung konzentriert sich meist auf Risikofaktoren, Erklärungsmodelle und einzelne suizidpräventive Maßnahmen. Die vorliegende Ethnographie macht die Suizidprävention hingegen selbst zum Gegenstand der Analyse und Kritik. Ergebnis ist eine Geschichte und eine praxisfähige Theorie der Suizidprävention, welche die Herausforderungen, Schwierigkeiten und Widersprüche dieser Arbeit analysiert: In der Suizidprävention wird das normative Grundprinzip der autonomen Lebensführung oftmals gleichermaßen verteidigt wie auch praktisch infrage gestellt. Die schwierigen Spannungsverhältnisse von Therapie und Kontrolle, Tabu und Narrativ, Prävention und Ansteckung zeigen sich hier besonders deutlich. How do informal institutions interact with formal institutions? How do they shape formal institutional rules, mechanisms, and outcomes? Finally, how do existing informal institutions change? What factors might trigger informal institutional change? In order to answer these questions, Sarigil examines several empirical cases of informal institution as derived from various issue areas in the Turkish sociopolitical context (i.e., civil law, conflict resolution, minority rights, and local governance) and from multiple levels (i.e., national and local).

Florian Greiner traces the different responses in East and West: the emergence of hospice movements and palliative medicine, the fight for assisted dying, and churches' search for religious meaning. Examining little-known policing archives in France, Senegal, and Cambodia, Jennifer Anne Boittin unearths the stories of hundreds of women labelled 'undesirable' by the French colonial police and society in the early 20th century. These 'undesirables' were often women travelling alone, women who were poor or ill, women of colour, or women whose intimate lives were deemed unruly. In considering how ordinary women pursued autonomy, security, companionship, or simply a better existence in the face of surveillance and control, 'Undesirable' illuminates pressing contemporary issues of migration and violence.

    Kurzfassung: This book focuses on the development of bilateral Jewish-Muslim relations in London and Amsterdam since the late-1980s. It offers a comparative analysis that considers both similarities and differences, drawing on historical, social scientific, and religious studies perspectives. The authors address how Jewish-Muslim relations are related to the historical and contemporary context in which they are embedded, the social identity strategies Jews and Muslims and their institutions employ, and their perceived mutual positions in terms of identity and power. The first section reflects on the history and current profile of Jewish and Muslim communities in London and Amsterdam and the development of relations between Jews andMuslims in both cities. The second section engages with sources of conflict and cooperation. Four specific areas that cause tension are explored: the Israeli-Palestinian conflict; antisemitism and Islamophobia; attacks by extremists; and the commemoration of wars and genocides. In addition to ‘trigger events’, what stands out is the influence of historical factors, public opinion, the ‘mainstream’ Christian churches and the media, along with the role of government. Lillian Trager explores the significance of hometown connections for civil society and local development in Nigeria. Rich ethnographic description and case studies illustrate the links that the Ijesa Yoruba maintain with their communities of origin-links that both help to shape social identity and contribute to local development.
