    Kurzfassung: 〈P〉Der vorliegende Sammelband ist dem 400-Jahr-Jubiläum des Erscheinens zweier hervorragender Werke in der Kulturgeschichte der Slowenen, der Bibelübersetzung von Juraj Dalmatin und der ersten slowenischen Grammatik (Articae horulae) von Adam Bohorič (beides 1584) gewidmet und enthält den Großteil der für den Druck bearbeiteten Referate der "3. Slawistentagung der Universitäten Klagenfurt und Ljubljana" (Klagenfurt, 26.-28. Mai 1983). Den Hauptteil des Bandes bilden die Beiträge zum Rahmenthema der Tagung "Protestantismus bei den Slowenen". Darüber hinaus wurden auch jene Tagungsbeiträge aufgenommen, die zwar thematisch außerhalb des Rahmenthemas liegen, jedoch einen Einblick in die slowenistische Forschungstätigkeit an den beiden Universitätsorten geben. 〈/P〉

Les maîtres sont des « sceptiques » à la mode du Second Empire, tandis que les livres veulent, disent-ils, lutter contre le Mal. Ils le dépeignent avec ardeur ? Certes, mais c'est par « méthode », pour mieux vanter le Bien. Excellente tactique, pense d'abord Ducasse, qui veut lui aussi contribuer à cette noble croisade où il voit l'avenir : peignons le Mal sous ses couleurs les plus horribles, et les âmes oppressées ne pourront que se jeter dans les bras du Bien. Voilà, au rebours de ce que l'on a longtemps cru, tout le programme des Chants de Maldoror. Mais des doutes naissent,-peu à peu. Quelle est-elle donc cette « morale » dont chacun se réclame et que les Chants veulent servir par leurs propres moyens ? Quels sont ces moyens ? Pourquoi ont-ils échoué, nous laissant confondre leur subtil utilisateur avec ce qu'il vomissait : ces « hurleurs maniaques », ces anges du Mal, ces « farceurs au quarteron » dont il voulait précisément la fin ? Telles sont quelques-unes des questions auxquelles ce livre s'efforce de répondre, en relisant pas à pas les Chants

    Kurzfassung: The years just before and during the Civil War marked the high point of Bryant's influence on public affairs, which had grown steadily since the Evening Post had upheld the democratic Jacksonian revolution of the 1830s. A founder of the Free Soil Party in 1848 and the Republican Party in 1856, Bryant was lauded in 1857 by Virginia anti-slavery leader John Curtis Underwood, who wrote to Eli Thayer, "What a glory it would be to our country if it could elect this man to the Presidency-the country not he would be honored & elevated by such an event." In 1860 Bryant helped secure the Presidential nomination for Abraham Lincoln, and was instrumental in the choice of two key members of his cabinet, Salmon Chase as Secretary of the Treasury, and Gideon Welles as Secretary of the Navy. During disheartening delays and defeats in the early war years, direct communications from Union field commanders empowered his editorial admonitions to such a degree that the conductor of a national magazine concluded that the Evening Post's "clear and able political leaders have been of more service to the government of this war than some of its armies." Bryant's correspondence with statesmen further reflects the immediacy of his concern with military and political decisions. There are thirty-five known letters to Lincoln, and thirty-two to Chase, Welles, war secretary Stanton, and Senators Fessenden, Morgan, and Sumner. This seven-year passage in Bryant's life, beginning with his wife's critical illness at Naples in 1858, concludes with a unique testimonial for his seventieth birthday in November 1864. The country's leading artists and writers entertained him at a "Festival" in New York's Century Club, giving him a portfolio of pictures by forty-six painters as a token of the "sympathy" he had "ever manifested toward the Artists," and the "high rank" he had "ever accorded to art." Poets Emerson, Holmes, Longfellow, Lowell, and Whittier saluted him in prose and verse. Emerson saw him as "a true painter of the face of this country"; Holmes, as the "first sweet singer in the cage of our close-woven life." To Whittier, his personal and public life sounded "his noblest strain." And in the darkest hours of the war, said Lowell, he had "remanned ourselves in his own manhood's store," had become "himself our bravest crown."

Abel Botelho consagrou-lhe o seu Livro d'Alda; Alfredo Gallis escreveu As Mulheres Perdidas; a Princesa de Boivão, de Alberto Pimentel, conta a história de uma pobre desventurada a quem o amante vingativo abre no corpo as « quatro letras ferreteantes » ; A Bandeira, de Lino Macedo, é mais uma historieta de uma pobre e desamparada cortesã; Rocha Martins dedica dois livros a cortesãs régias: A Madre Paula e a Flor da Murta, como Andrade Corvo já havia dedicado um à célebre Calcanhares : Um Ano na Corte. No teatro surgem, com o virar do último século, A Pérola, de Marcelino de Mesquita (à época proibida por «imoral») ; A Severa, de Júlio Dantas ; a Rosa Enjeitada, de D. João da Câmara, e o Fado, de Bento Mantua. Contudo, o primeiro estudo sério sobre a prostituição em Portugal apareceu em 1841, com o livro de Santos Cruz, Da Prostituição na Cidade de Lisboa, que temos o gosto de apresentar e que com tanta oportunidade surge agora a público

Comment en fait, un peuple s'est géré tout seul, en dehors des structures coloniales qui l'ignoraient et dont il savait se protéger ; comment il a su aussi admirablement régler ses problèmes tout en restant fondamentalement lui-même. Austin's refreshing approach to poetic syntax offers great hope for a positive and productive future for the discipline of stylistics

    Kurzfassung: Amandus Ivanschiz (in Slovenian literature "Ivančič") belongs to a group of today little known 18th-century composers. He was, however, in his own time all over Central Europe well known and largely copied monastic composer. Around 200 compositions survived to this date in various copies now preserved in Slovenian, Croatian, Austrian, Czech, etc. archives. However, only a few of his compositions are available to modern performers. In volume 3 of the Monumenta artis musicae Sloveniae series are published three "Simphoniae" for two violins and bass, i.e. triosonatas, typical for Viennese musical circles of the 1750s and 1760s. The music is accompanied by an introductory presentation of the composer's works and Revision Report by Danilo Pokorn (1984).The digitized version of the edition (2020) includes a New Introduction as well as Corrigenda by Maciej Jochymczyk bringing to the reader's attention new information on father Amandus and corrigenda of the earlier edition

O tem priča ok. 200 njegovih skladb, ki so se v prepisih ohranile širom srednje Evrope: v slovenskih, hrvaških, avstrijskih in čeških arhivih. Izvajalcem in raziskovalcem glasbene kulture je še vedno dostopen le majhen del njegovega opusa. Tretji zvezek zbirke MAMS v sodobni notni izdaji prinaša tri Ivančičeve simfonije za dve violini in bas oz. triosimfonije, kakršne so bile značilne za dunajske skladateljske kroge 50-ih in 60-ih letih 18. stoletja. Zvezek je opremljen z uvodno študijo o življenju in delih patra Amandusa in revizijskim poročilom Danila Pokorna (1984).Digitalizirana po-izdaja iz leta 2020 prinaša dodatni Novi uvod in Corrigenda Macieja Jochymczyka s posodobljenimi podatki o skladatelju in popravki zgodnejšega vedenja

Over the last couple of decades, the plantation towns of Hawaiʻi have been dying. Fewer workers are needed as land is converted to other uses and as labor-efficient production techniques are developed. The displacement of people whose lives have been centered on the functional apparatus of the plantations is particularly distressing. As Hawaiʻi copes with the human problems, it is important to understand the history, social behavior, and values of Filipino plantation workers, some of whom now face substantial hardship. The author and his co-researchers studied three plantation towns in depth and examined in varying detail the lives of Filipino plantation residents on the islands of Kauaʻi, Oʻahu, Molokaʻi, and Hawaiʻi. In the course of collecting data, they taped and transcribed a number of conversations, some of which are included here. These voices add a lively counterpoint to the data and discussion. As time and events overcome the caretakers of the ethnic cultures of Hawai'i's plantations, the rural lifestyles of these communities may be forgotten. Books such as this will help to preserve their flavor and texture. Social scientists, scholars and students of ethnic studies, community leaders, and even the people described herein will find this a useful and informative study

Published just as historians were eager to shed the trappings of Old Labor History, Jensen and Davidson’s collection tells a different history about women clothing workers who were divided by race, region, ethnicity, and class, from the nineteenth throughout the twentieth century

He maintains that popular contemporary theories, most notably E. O. Wilson’s human sociobiology and Marvin Harris’s cultural materialism, represent pre-Darwinian notions overlaid by elaborate evolutionary terminology. Greenwood first details the humoral-environmental and Great Chain of Being theories that dominated Western thinking before Darwin. He systematically compares these ideas with those later influenced by Darwin’s theories, illuminating the surprising continuities between them. Greenwood suggests that it would be neither difficult nor socially dangerous to develop a genuinely evolutionary understanding of human beings, so long as we realized that we could not derive political and moral standards from the study of biological processes

    Kurzfassung: Amandus Ivanschiz (Ivančič), ki je bil po priimku sodeč južnoslovanskega porekla, sodi med danes manj znane skladatelje 18. stoletja, čeprav je bil v svojem času razmeroma močno prisoten v srednjeevropskem glasbenem prostoru. O tem priča ok. 100 njegovih skladb, ki so se v prepisih ohranile širom srednje Evrope: v slovenskih, hrvaških, avstrijskih in čeških arhivih. Izvajalcem in raziskovalcem glasbene kulture je danes še vedno dostopen le majhen del njegovega opusa. Prvi zvezek zbirke MAMS prinaša pet Ivančičevih sonat »a tre« (triosonat) v sodobni notni izdaji. Opremljen je z uvodno študijo in revizijskim poročilom Danila Pokorna, prinaša pa tudi nekaj faksimilov Ivančičevih sonat.Digitalizirana po-izdaja iz leta 2020 prinaša dodatni Novi uvod in Corrigenda Macieja Jochymczyka s posodobljenimi podatki o skladatelju in popravki zgodnejšega vedenja

Working along the lines suggested by Peirce's theory of signs, as interpreted within the context of the philosopher's entire oeuvre, Michael Shapiro proposes a major reorientation of linguistic theory and a shift in the ultimate goals of the study of language structure. Part One provides a theoretical dissection of Peirce's semeiotic and evaluates its importance to structural linguistics. In it Shapiro grapples with the main differences between the theory of signs as Peirce held it before and after 1906. He then applies Peirce's semeiotic to the development of a new theory of grammar, which he tests in Part Two. Revolutionary industrial unionism challenged previous organizations, and new communist parties contended with Social Democracy for the political allegiance of the working classes. In this crucible of struggle and social transformation, many of the most influential political and social theories were forged: not only those of Lenin and Kautsky, but also Gramsci and Lukacs, Korsch and Austro-Maxism, Michel and Weber. The meaning of both democracy and socialism has remained contested ever since.     Kurzfassung: Les années 1870-1889 sont celles de la conquête de la République par les républicains et de la victoire de la République parlementaire contre les différents révisionnismes constitutionnels. Maintes fois racontées dans le style hagiographique de la République triomphante, ou au contraire vilipendées par les nostalgiques de la Monarchie, ces années n'avaient pas encore fait l'objet d'une étude scientifique. L'analyse des élections de 1881, 1885 et 1889, le recours systématique aux documents originaux, voire aux archives inédites, permettent de donner une vision plus réaliste de ce que fut l'aventure républicaine dans un pays encore largement dominé par les partis monarchistes et l'Église du Syllabus. Pour lutter contre les partisans de l'absolutisme la République parlementaire n'hésita pas à prendre quelques distances vis-à-vis du libéralisme qui était sa gloire et son justificatif : d'où le titre de République absolue pour cette République qui, en gagnant de nombreux combats, creusait en même temps les conditions futures de sa chute
