Abstract:
Das Frobenius-Institut für kulturanthropologische Forschung an der Goethe-Universität Frankfurt a. M. verfügt über einen einmaligen Sammlungsbestand an Nachzeichnungen prähistorischer Felsbilder, an Fotografien sowie ethnografischen Bildern fremder Ethnien und ihrer Kulturgüter, der auf Expeditionen nach Afrika, Australien, Neuguinea, Skandinavien und Südeuropa entstand. Ausstellung und Katalog möchten diesen herausragenden universitären Bilderschatz, der auf den Institutsgründer, den Ethnologen Leo Frobenius (1873–1938) zurückgeht und sich im Spannungsfeld zwischen Wissenschaft und Kunst bewegt, einer breiten Öffentlichkeit vorstellen. Der Fokus liegt auf den bislang wenig bekannten Expeditionszeichnern und -zeichnerinnen, die dieses beeindruckende Bildmaterial im Dienste der Wissenschaft schufen. Ausstellung und Katalog spannen den Bogen von der Wilhelminischen Epoche bis in die 1960er Jahre und spiegeln damit die tiefen Umbrüche der Zeithistorie, der Wissenschaft und der Kunst. Der reich bebilderte Katalog der Ausstellung umfasst wissenschaftliche Beiträge von Ethnologen, Kulturanthropologen und Kunsthistorikern.
