Abstract: Informed by ongoing research, this handsome publication features the work of artists connected with the Royal Academy in an exploration of migration, exchange, artistic traditions, identity and belonging. Contemporary and historical works are brought together as part of a conversation about art and its role in shaping narratives of empire, enslavement, abolition and colonialism, and how it may help set a course for the future. The life-size painted cut-out figures of Lubaina Himid's installation Naming the Money; Hew Locke's Armada, a flotilla of "votive boats" recalling different periods and places; paintings, photographs, sculptures, drawings and prints by Sonia Boyce, Frank Bowling, John Akomfrah, Isaac Julien, El Anatsui, Kerry James Marshall, Kara Walker, Shahzia Sikander, Mohini Chandra and Betye Saar; and historical works by artists such as Joshua Reynolds, J.M.W. Turner and John Singleton Copley create connections across time that examine questions of power, representation and history

Abstract: "For generations, Black artists from the American South have forged a unique art tradition. Working in near isolation from established practices, they have created masterpieces in clay, driftwood, roots, soil, recycled and cast-off objects that articulate America's painful past -- the inhuman practice of enslavement, the cruel segregationist policies of the Jim Crow era, and institutionalised racism. Their works date from the early 20th century to today and respond to issues ranging from economic inequality, oppression and social marginalisation, to sexuality, the influence of place and ancestral memory. Among the sculptures, paintings, reliefs and drawings included here are works by Thornton Dial, Lonnie Holley, Ronald Lockett, Hawkins Bolden, Bessie Harvey, Charles Williams, Mary T. Smith, Purvis Young, Mose Tolliver, Nellie Mae Rowe, Mary Lee Bendolph, Marlene Bennett Jones, Martha Jane Pettway, Loretta Pettway, and Henry and Georgia Speller. Also featured are the celebrated quiltmakers of Gee's Bend, Alabama, and the neighbouring communities of Rehoboth and Alberta."--Page four of cover

Abstract: "This landmark book charts the development of Australian art, from early Aboriginal paintings and those of the early colonial settlers to the work of later immigrants and today's artists that reflects their cultural diverse influences. Spanning over 200 years from 1800 to the present day, this major survey sheds light on an intense period of change in Australian culture and society through such powerful paintings as Sidney Nolan's outlaw Ned Kelly, as well as the highly original work by artists such as Rover Thomas, Tracey Moffatt, Fiona Hall and Vernon Ah Kee. The art of this continent is closely linked to its landscape. Australian artists, both Indigenous and non-Indigenous, have long found inspiration in its natural beauty, distinctive light and sheer diversity. By evolving their own responses to the city, the beach and the bush in paintings, prints, drawings, watercolours, bark paintings, photographs and film, they reveal the profound influence of the Australian land and landscape."--Book jacket
Abstract: Marking the first major survey of Australian art in the United Kingdom for 50 years, this catalogue spans more than 200 years from 1800 to the present day and seeks to uncover the fascinating social and cultural evolution of a nation through its art. Two hundred works including painting, drawing, photography, watercolours and multimedia will shed light on a period of rapid and intense change; from the impact of colonisation on an indigenous people, to the pioneering nation building of the 19th century through to the enterprising urbanisation of the last 100 years.--

Abstract: In the first half of the twentieth century Mexico was home to a burgeoning of art comparable in energy to the political revolution that shook the country between 1910 and 1920. This surge of artistic activity is the subject of this compelling new book, which presents the work of Mexican artists - from social-realist painters Diego Rivera and David Alfaro Siqueiros to the photographers Agustin Jiménez and Manuel Alvarez Bravo - alongside that of their international contemporaries, figures as diverse as Philip Guston, Josef and Anni Albers, and Edward Burra. This book explores the artistic documentation of the dramatic changes wrought by the revolution, the government's role in employing artists to promote its reforms, and the emergence of a native modernism. Exhibition: Royal Academy of Arts, London, UK (6.7.-29.9.2013).

Abstract: This glossy, fully illustrated book looks at the period between the 8th and the 13th Centuries, when the Chola dynasty was the dominant cultural, religious, and political force in Southern India. The most spectacular elements of the dynasty's artistic legacy are its bronze representations of Shiva and other Hindu gods. This lavishly illustrated book presents nearly thirty of these exquisite works - cast bronze sculptures from the region in the far South of India known as Tamil Nadu. They date from the period 850-1250. Many such works continue to be worshipped in the temples for which they were originally commissioned, in some cases over 1,000 years ago. Expert authors explore how and why the figures came to be made and examine the role they played within Hinduism and Chola culture. Sumptuous full-page illustrations and numerous details reveal the bronzes' sensuous beauty, which will be a revelation to a Western Audience. Contents: President's Foreword; Map; 1. Parading the Gods: Bronze Devotional Images of Chola South India by John Guy; 2. Beauty and the Body of God by Vidya Dehejia; 3. Looking at Chola Bronzes by John Eskenazi; Catalogue by Vidya Dehejia: 1. Shiva and His Imagery; 2. Shiva Saints; 3. Vishnu and His Imagery; 4.
