    Abstract: Eine Sammlung trägt Objekte zusammen, verknüpft sie und spiegelt so die Grundeigenschaft des Netzes. Vernetzungsgeschehen sind in der Sammlungspraxis allenthalben zu beobachten. Gegenwärtig werden Objekte mit Hilfe moderner Technologien in potentiell unendlichen Geflechten miteinander verbunden, aber auch wieder entbunden. Der Band dokumentiert die Beiträge einer Tagung, die Akteurinnen und Akteure des Sammelns, Sammlungen als solche und die Sammlungsforschung mit Bezug auf das Netzmodell positionieren. Die derzeitige Auslegungspraxis für geothermische Großanlagen basiert im Wesentlichen auf den gleichen Bedingungen, die für Einzelanlagen geschaffen wurden. Gefragt sind jedoch Quartierslösungen, die eine optimierte Anlagendimensionierung ermöglichen. EASyQuart entwickelt ein standortbezogenes Entscheidungshilfesystem für die Beheizung/Kühlung von Stadtquartieren unter Nutzung oberflächennaher geothermischer Ressourcen. Die Projektergebnisse umfassen Arbeitsabläufe, Bewertungskriterien und wissenschaftliche Instrumente, die helfen sollen, eine wirtschaftlich ungünstige Systemdimensionierung zu vermeiden.     Abstract: Diese Dissertation aus der Sparte der Reflexiven Bibliometrie erforscht die Rückwirkungen der Verwendung von quantitativen Indikatoren in der Wissenschaftsevaluation auf die Wissensproduktion und Forschungsqualität in der Astronomie. Eine qualitative Analyse der strukturellen Bedingungen der akamdeischen Astronomie anhand des Rational Choice Frameworks führen zur Beobachtung eines "Evaluation Gap" zwischen dem, was Indikatoren messen und dem, was Forscher unter Forschungsqualität verstehen. Die Analyse offenbart weiters einen Balanceakt, in dem Astronomen zwischen Publikationsdruck und Forschungsintegrität Kompromisse finden. Weiterführende quantitative Untersuchungen unter Einbezug von Organisational Culture Theories und Self-Determination Theory zeigen, dass kontrollierte Formen von Motivation zu einem erhöhten Publikationsdruck und wissenschaftlichem Fehlverhalten führen, während autonome Formen von Motivation das Gegenteil bewirken. Schließlich skizziert die Arbeit Wege zur Transformation der Forschungskultur hin zu mehr Vielfalt und Partizipation, einschließlich der Einführung offener Wissensmanagement-Infrastrukturen und kontinuierlicher, reflexiver Evaluationsprozesse.
    Abstract: This dissertation from the field of Reflexive Bibliometrics, investigates the constitutive effects of utilizing quantitative metrics in research evaluation on knowledge production and research quality in astronomy. Embedded in the Rational Choice Framework to analyze the structural conditions within academic astronomy, a qualitative analysis reveals an "Evaluation Gap" between what metrics measure and researchers' perceptions of research quality. Furthermore, the analysis unveils a balancing act where astronomers navigate compromises between publication pressures and research integrity. Subsequent quantitative analyses, incorporating Organizational Culture Theories and Self-Determination Theory, demonstrate that controlled forms of motivation exacerbate publication pressure and scientific misconduct, while autonomous motivations yield contrasting effects. Lastly, the study outlines pathways towards transforming research culture towards greater diversity and participation, including the adoption of open knowledge management infrastructures and continuous, reflexive evaluation processes.

    Abstract: In diesem Open-Access-Buch geht es um die Frage, wie Leser*innen in Deutschland automatisiert generierte Nachrichten wahrnehmen und welche Bedeutung sie den Verfahren im Journalismus zuschreiben. Im Mittelpunkt steht die Frage, ob das Publikum dem automatisierten Journalismus vertraut und welche Einflussfaktoren bei dieser Entscheidung eine Rolle spielen. Zur empirischen Überprüfung wurden Focus Groups mit gezielt rekrutierten Leser*innen eingesetzt. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass es keine monokausalen Antworten auf die Frage nach dem Vertrauen der Lesenden in automatisierten Journalismus gibt. Grundsätzlich stehen sie dem Technologieeinsatz neutral und gleichzeitig neugierig sowie – vor allem mit Blick auf die Zukunft – skeptisch gegenüber. Die Teilnehmenden fordern einen transparenten Umgang der Medienorganisationen mit automatisierter Berichterstattung und wollen mehr Informationen zum Einsatz, zur Verbreitung und zur Technologie haben. Als Einflussfaktoren auf die Vertrauensbewertung wurden ausgewählte Personen- sowie Text- und Publikationsmerkmale und Eigenschaften des Untersuchungsgegenstands getestet. Hohe Relevanz haben erkennbar die Angst vor gezielter Manipulation, die individuellen Vorstellungen über Künstliche Intelligenzen sowie die Kontingenz von Texten. Die Autorin Theresa Körner hat 2023 am Institut für Kommunikationswissenschaft der Otto-Friedrich Universität Bamberg zum Thema Vertrauen der Lesenden in Automatisierten Journalismus promoviert.

While museums have long focused on building digital object databases, the existing data can now become a field of application for machine learning, deep learning and foundation model approaches. This goes hand in hand with new artistic practices, curation tools, visitor analytics, chatbots, automatic translations and tailor-made text generation. With a decidedly interdisciplinary approach, the volume brings together a wide range of critical reflections, practical perspectives and concrete applications of artificial intelligence in museums and offers an overview of the current state of the debate.

Der Autor Thomas Schmidt ist seit 2011 Gastprofessor und seit 2013 Professor und Direktor des Studiengangs Theater und Orchestermanagement in Frankfurt am Main. Von 2003 bis 2012 war er geschäftsführender Direktor, bis 2013 Intendant des Deutschen Nationaltheaters Weimar. 2014 war er Gastprofessor an der Harvard University.

    Abstract: This book seeks to expand some of the existing, often western and Global North facing, scholarship in the area of Disability and Media Studies to include African perspectives. Featuring predominantly Africa-based contributors, it studies an array of topics on disability and media in Africa, including issues of social media, media ethics, including marginalised voices in the media, and disability representation in the media. Tafadzwa Rugoho PhD is currently at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. He was a lecturer at Great Zimbabwe University in the Department of Development Studies. Tafadzwa holds an MA in Policy Studies, an MSc in Development, an MSc in Strategic Management and a BSc in Sociology. He has authored more than 25 book chapters as well as a number of journal papers on disability issues. Tafadzwa has presented several papers at local and international research conferences in this area over the past five years. Tafadzwa is also a guest lecturer at the University of Pretoria, where he teaches Sexuality and social media. He coauthored a book titled Sexual and Reproductive Health of Adolescents with Disabilities.

    Abstract: Detroit’s shrinking size has resulted in an overabundance of single-family homes in this single-family home metropolis. On the one hand, the abandoned houses have led to Detroit being declared bankrupt, while on the other hand, it has paved the way for other ways of working and living with and using houses and vacant lots that may not make an immediate profit on the real estate market and may be considered “unreal” estate (Herscher, 2012), but that keep people together as a neighborhood and community. This thesis looks at the circumstances in which residents become homeowners and how as homeowners, artists and immigrants ascribe value to single-family homes and how they make place with their homes in a neighborhood context. The focus is on homeowners’ everyday practices that determine the value of single-family homes when the latter is not considered use value or economic value in a real estate market, but recognized as a social and cultural value.

    Abstract: This chapter is a consideration of how we may approach the question of remediation in digital games, suggesting that we recognize how digital game remediation incorporates what are often more obvious elements from analogue game design into the more implicit infrastructure of digital contexts. Additionally, such remediation often exhibits “hypomediacy,” the denial of game design mediation, with important consequences for how useful digital games have become for institutional projects and their claims about reality. Anthropological treatments of ritual, and specifically how the engagement of audiences with ambiguous performances produces the real for participants, point toward important implications for digital games, where the infrastructural game elements may underwrite a similar process of reality construction through player performance. My overall suggestion is that when we give the cultural form of game its due (as we have for ritual and bureaucracy) – that is, when we incorporate a robust consideration of game features into our analyses – we will be in a better position to illuminate the ways in which our engagement with digital infrastructure is fraught with claims about the real.

    Abstract: Data centres underpin the architecture of cloud computing and form the operational backbone for digital communications and internet media. Yet, despite the rhetoric of the “on demand”, “real-time” and “instant access” that characterises online consumption, it takes continuous work and upkeep to ensure that the online services provided by data centres remain constantly available, ready to be streamed or downloaded at the click of a button. This chapter follows the work of those tasked with operating and maintaining cloud infrastructure. It draws from fieldwork in a London-based data centre to explore the lived experiences of data centre labour that form the conditions of possibility for cloud media cultures and digital societies. Contributing to discussions of media infrastructures and digital labour, this chapter presents “maintenance” as an essential, but overlooked, form of media labour. If production, consumption and distribution have been understood as key media processes, less attention has been paid to maintenance, and to the people who operate and fix media infrastructure.

Michael Chazan provides a translation of Eric Boëda's authoritative work Techno-logique and Technologie, that draws on his career of research on stone tool assemblages from archaeological sites in Europe, the Middle East, and China together with a theoretical apparatus influenced by the work of Gilbert Simondon. This book presents a major challenge to all archaeologists who study ancient technology to reconsider how we think about artifacts and how to approach the question of progress through time in human technology. Lithic analysis is a highly empirical field of study that rarely has an impact on issues of broad theoretical interest and Boëda's book is a welcome exception.     Abstract: At the heart of many studies in media anthropology is an interest in media practices. While practice-oriented approaches have gained momentum as of late, there has been little discussion about how they can include particular “media texts” or “media content” into their research designs. This is especially true for digital content on social media platforms, such as digital images, captions, emojis, hashtags, and so on, which have become popular objects of ethnographic investigation. Though digital content has clear empirical value for ethnographic studies, researchers are unclear about how to approach it conceptually and methodologically. In the following chapter, I argue that digital content itself can be analysed as practice. Using my ethnographic study of digital practices at the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe as an example, I show that digital content can be studied as routines in the interplay of human bodies, social and cultural conventions, and the affordances of digital media technologies. My practice approach does not read content as text; rather, it asks how the practices of its creators live on through digital content. This perspective offers a new way of conducting content analysis from an ethnographic perspective and expands the toolbox available for media anthropological research.
