    Abstract: L’identité européenne, fruit d’une volonté politique dès le Traité de Rome en 1957, devient chaque jour une réalité vécue qui s’impose aux consciences, aux États, aux traditions, au passé. La multiplication des échanges institutionnels et personnels au sein de la Communauté Européenne qui s’agrandit d’année en année implique l’existence et l’usage d’une ou plusieurs langues de vaste diffusion. À défaut d’une « langue universelle » qui rallierait tous les suffrages le plurilinguisme semble être la solution raisonnable et tout Européen aura l’obligation, le devoir même de maîtriser outre sa propre langue, une ou deux langues de la Communauté. La « politique des langues » doit retenir l’attention de tous, hommes politiques, enseignants, simples citoyens, si l’on veut que la question des langues ne deviennent pas un facteur de division mais qu’elle contribue à la construction de l’Europe. Cet ouvrage, issu du Symposium International de Nancy et enrichi d’apports complémentaires, apporte des éléments de réponse et des voies de réflexion à cette problématique qui concerne autant les enseignants et les parents que les décideurs politiques et les acteurs sociaux. Les contributions présentées dans cet ouvrage illustrent les préoccupations et les réflexions des spécialistes en Sciences du Langage à la fois chercheurs et praticiens ; elles s’ordonnent autour de quatre grands thèmes : – un état des lieux : les langues sur le terrain et dans les institutions ; – un contenu pratique : la formation linguistique « les jeunes européens ; – une proposition nécessaire : la planification linguistique ; – des perspectives d’avenir : le cheminement vers line identité européenne à travers les langues de l’Europe.

    Abstract: This collection considers such issues as the cognitive, linguistic and emotional benefits of speaking two languages, the perceptions, attitudes and issues relating to identity in minority language areas, and the number of grammatical aspects amongst those who speak these minority languages. The premise of the book is based on the fact that these minority languages have, in the past, been in danger of becoming obsolete, mainly because of negative attitudes regarding the benefits of speaking languages that are considered irrelevant internationally. However, in recent times, the benefits of speaking two languages, including where one is a minority language, have been recognised in ways that were not previously understood. Perhaps because of this, alongside the introduction of legislation in some areas in Europe that has been designed to support the preservation of some of these languages, there has been a re-emergence of many minority languages throughout the continent. Questions remain whether this has led to the languages becoming more widely spoken and whether there are specific benefits that can be gained from speaking them. Exploring these questions has led to an increasing amount of research being undertaken on various aspects of bilingualism in minority language areas in Europe. The book contributes to this debate and underlines the relevance and significance of bilingualism in the specific context where European minority languages are still spoken.

    Abstract: This volume provides a comprehensive report on a symposium organised by the Council of Europe (Strasbourg) in 2016 in the context of its human rights agenda. Its purpose was to explore some of the ways in which scientific evidence can inform the development and implementation of policy and practice designed to support the linguistic integration of adult migrants. La présente publication rend compte d’un symposium organisé en 2016 par le Conseil de l’Europe, à Strasbourg, dans le cadre de ses programmes sur les droits de l’homme. L’objectif de ce symposium était d’explorer comment les apports de la recherche scientifique peuvent orienter l’élaboration et la mise en œuvre de politiques et de pratiques destinées à favoriser l’intégration linguistique des migrants adultes.

    Abstract: Warum ist das mentale Programm des Kolonialismus heute global noch so aktuell? Es wirkt in einer Vielzahl literarischer Texte nach, die die Kernbotschaft des rassisch-minderwertigen Anderen weltweit verbreiten, normalisieren und legitimieren. Dieses Buch zeichnet die verdrängte koloniale Vorgeschichte der europäischen Weltmacht-Stellung nach und zeigt die Kontinuität des kolonialen Prozesses bis in die Gegenwart seiner globalen Vernetzung auf. Die Analyse des kolonialen Geschehens erfolgt an fiktionalen und non-fiktionalen Texten im historischen und systemischen Zusammenhang der kolonialen Weltbemächtigung. Die europäische Selbstreflexion erschließt somit Wege, sich von der uneingestandenen Nachwirkung kolonialen Handelns und Denkens zu befreien.
    Abstract: Why is the mental program of colonialism still so topical all over the world? It has an after-effect in a multitude of literary texts that spread, normalize and legalize the core message of the racially inferior others. This book traces the suppressed colonial history of the European global power position, showing the continuity of the colonial process in its global integration up to today. The analysis of colonial events is conducted by means of fictional and non-fictional texts in the historical and systemic connection of colonial possession of global power. The European self-reflection therefore presents ways of how to liberate oneself from the unacknowledged after-effects of colonial actions and thinking.

    Abstract: For the analysis of contemporary historical pop-cultural phenomena, a surplus of transnational perspectives are often asserted, but rarely backed up empirically. This volume, however, gathers together case studies that without exception analyze multiple countries and are engaged in forceful historical comparisons, as well as histories of transfer and intertwinement. They focus on music and film, television and radio, magazines and comics, youth culture and fashion. The epistemological interest is directed not just at the comparison of the trends of Americanization and Europeanization in the long decade of the '60s, but also at the relevance of transnational popular culture for processes of social and political transformation

    Abstract: Anschläge auf Unterkünfte von Geflüchteten, rassistische Übergriffe körperlicher und sprachlicher Art, politische Maßnahmen, um Andere sterben zu machen, pauschale Urteile über die kollektive Rückständigkeit Anderer, Wahrnehmung und Erleben der Gefahr, die von ihren Körpern ausgeht ...Die rezente mediale, politische und alltagsweltliche Behandlung von Flucht und Migration hat in Europa offenen Rassismus (wieder) »salonfähig« gemacht. Dieser setzt auch auf die Dämonisierung der imaginierten Anderen, die nicht zuletzt der Bewahrung von materiellen und symbolischen Privilegien dient. Weil die Anderen dämonisch und ungezügelt sind, so die vielleicht kürzeste Analyseformel, sind wir befugt, uns vor ihnen und unsere Vorrechte zu schützen.Die Beiträge des Bandes klären diese Verhältnisse rassismuskritisch auf und widersprechen ihnen
    Abstract: The recent media, political and everyday treatment of forced migration has made overt racism "socially acceptable" again. In this way, the discussion of "refugees" and "migrants" following the events in Cologne on New Years' Eve has increasingly taken on the tone of the demonisation of the imagined Other. As this is linked to the "tightening of the asylum act" and a European refugee politics that is increasingly isolationist, this demonisation also preserves material and symbolic relations of privilege. Because the Others are demonic and rampant, as the most concise formation of the analysis goes, we are empowered to protect ourselves from them. It is from this perspective that researchers come forward to speak against the hegemonic discourse

    Abstract: A distinct European perspective on Asia emerged in the late Middle Ages. Early reports of a homogeneous "India" of marvels and monsters gave way to accounts written by medieval travelers that indulged readers' curiosity about far-flung landscapes and cultures without exhibiting the attitudes evident in the later writings of aspiring imperialists. Mining the accounts of more than twenty Europeans who made---or claimed to have made---journeys to Mongolia, China, India, Sri Lanka, and Southeast Asia between the mid-thirteenth and early sixteenth centuries, Kim Phillips reconstructs a medieval European vision of Asia that was by turns critical, neutral, and admiring. In offering a cultural history of the encounter between medieval Latin Christians and the distant East, Before Orientalism reveals how Europeans' prevailing preoccupations with food and eating habits, gender roles, sexualities, civility, and the foreign body helped shape their perceptions of Asian peoples and societies. Phillips gives particular attention to the texts' known or likely audiences, the cultural settings within which they found a foothold, and the broader impact of their descriptions, while also considering the motivations of their writers. She reveals in rich detail responses from European travelers that ranged from pragmatism to wonder. Fear of military might, admiration for high standards of civic life and court culture, and even delight in foreign magnificence rarely assumed the kind of secular Eurocentric superiority that would later characterize Orientalism. Placing medieval writing on the East in the context of an emergent "Europe" whose explorers sought to learn more than to rule, Before Orientalism complicates our understanding of medieval attitudes toward the foreign.

    Abstract: Current ecological and environmental problems put the concept of nature more and more into the center of debates. This book presents analyses and case studies that explore the function and meaning of nature within the process of modernization at the epochal threshold of 1900 anew. In a trans-national, Northern European comparison, the contributions address the medial representations of nature (in literature, philosophy, film, photography) as well as the colonization of space (in tourism, travels, sports, environmental and cultural heritage protection). Thus, this volume also offers stimuli for the new theoretical-methodical approaches of eco-criticism and spatial sociology

Die Beiträge thematisieren u.a. Deleuzes Konzept des Nomadischen, die Geokritik sowie Werke von Paul Valéry und Romain Gary.Der zweite Teil widmet sich aus interdisziplinärer Perspektive einer provokativen Frage: Sind Kriege Motor interkultureller Kommunikation und Verständigung? Am Beispiel der Weltkriege und der Entkolonialisierungskonflikte des 20. Jahrhunderts sowie anhand von filmischen und literarischen Fallstudien aus dem frankophonen Kulturraum werden Phänomene wie Fremdwahrnehmung und interkulturelle Kommunikation analysiert.

    Abstract: This book provides a broad sociolinguistic perspective on major questions of political and cultural Europeanization. It is concerned with European multilingualism as it actually results from the intersecting endeavour of policy making and scientific research. This volume argues that the EU must overcome the major discrepancies of its linguistic diversity politics by developing into a multiple inclusive society beyond the nation-state in order to seriously unfold European multilingualism as a political goal. Expanding on the theoretical and methodological approaches developed within the EU project LINEE (Languages in a Network of European Excellence), this book further focuses on the LINEE key variables of European multilingualism i.e. 'culture', 'discourse', 'identity', 'ideology', 'knowledge', 'LPP', 'multi-competence', and 'power & conflict'. Against this background, this study argues for reconceptualising European multilingualism on the basis of an integrative and multi-focal approach.

    Abstract: America Where? Transatlantic Views of the United States in the Twenty-first Century gathers essays by distinguished American Studies scholars from both sides of the Atlantic. The articles address changing representations of ‘America’ in their many and mutual transnational exchanges, both in the Americas and in Europe. Atlanticism, neo-liberalism, transnationalism, borders, racism, prisons, labor, war and intercultural relations compose the range of approaches to be found in this book. While paying close attention to the geopolitical, social, and cultural fabric of the United States as a nation in its intercultural, cross-border time-spaces, this work brings to question the location of ‘America’ in our time. How does this ‘America’ – both the material, secular nation in the economic and political world, and the mythical, sacred, and spiritual entity, enormously charged with symbolic power – present itself today in the Western and Eastern Hemispheres? The book’s provisional answer is that the most productive «America» is to be found in the conversations that the cultures of the United States encourage and engage in, both nationally and internationally.

    Abstract: This chapter explores the relatively recent processes of language standardization in two Eastern European countries that emerged from State Communism in the early 1990s. The majority languages in Macedonia and Moldova are shown to come from politicized authoritarian backgrounds and to have been disputed during the transition to independence and democracy, ultimately affecting the types and extent of multilingualism in each context. The central role of language ideologies and politics is emphasized as similarities and differences in the two contexts are examined.

    Abstract: Der Siegeszug der Osmanen bis vor die Tore Wiens schlug sich in einem weitverzweigten, bis heute kaum überschaubaren Schrifttum nieder, das alle materiellen Mittel der Kommunikation umfaßt und als transnationales Paradigma frühneuzeitlicher Öffentlichkeit angesehen werden muß. Die in diesem Band vereinigten Studien, Ergebnisse eines Kolloquiums, das der Wolfenbütteler Arbeitskreis für Renaissanceforschung zusammen mit der Ungarischen Akademie der Wissenschaften veranstaltete, wenden sich im interdisziplinären Ausgriff und in internationaler Perspektive sowohl den Akteuren der osmanisch-europäischen Konfrontation wie auch den Autoren, Schreibweisen, Problemlagen, Traditionslinien und Rezeptionsmodalitäten der einschlägigen Literatur zu
    Abstract: The triumphant arrival of the Ottoman Turks before the gates of Vienna generated a spate of widely variegated writings almost too manifold to be surveyed from a present-day viewpoint and encompassing all the material resources of communication available at the time. As such this body of writing may be legitimately regarded as a transnational paradigm of early modern public communication. The studies in this volume present the results of a colloquium organized by the Wolfenbüttel Research Group on the Renaissance and the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. They are interdisciplinary in nature and international in their perspective and examine both the actors involved in the confrontation between Turks and Europeans and the authors, styles, problems, lines of tradition and reception modalities identifiable in the literature it generated

    Abstract: This volume explores the roots of Europe's struggle with multilingualism. It argues that, over the centuries, the pursuit of linguistic homogeneity has become a central aspect of the mindset of Europeans. In its extreme form, it became manifest in the principle of 'one language, one state, one people'. Consequently, multilingualism came to be viewed as an undesirable aberration. The authors of this volume approach the relationship between standard languages and multilingualism from a historical, cross-European perspective. They provide a comprehensive overview of the emergence of a standard language ideology and its intricate relationship with matters of ethnicity, territorial unity and social mobility. They explain for different European language areas in what ways the emergence of standard languages had an impact on multilingual policies and practices. Its comparative approach makes this volume an important resource for linguists, researchers from different philologies and social historians.
