    Abstract: "'Fallen Monuments and Contested Memorials' examines how the modification, destruction, or absence of monuments and memorials can be viewed as performative acts that challenge prescribed, embodied narratives in the public realm. Bringing together international, multidisciplinary approaches, the chapters in this volume interrogate the ways in which memorial constructions disclose implicitly and explicitly the proxy battle for public memory and identity, particularly since 2015. Acknowledging the ways in which the past — which is given agency through monuments and memorials — intrudes into daily life, this volume offers perspectives from researchers that answer questions about the roles of monuments and memorials as persistent, yet mutable, works whose meanings are not fixed but are, rather, subject to processes of continual re-interpretation. By using monuments and memorials as lenses through which to view race, memory, and the legacies of war, power, and subjugation, this volume demonstrates how these works, and their visible representations of entitlement, possession, control, and authority, can offer the opportunity to pose and answer questions about whose memory matters and what our symbols say about who we are and what we value. Fallen Monuments and Contested Memorials is essential reading for scholars and students studying cultural heritage, history, art history, and public history. It will be particularly useful to those with an interest in public monuments and memorials; colonial and post-colonial history; memory studies; and nationalism, race, and ethnic studies."

    Abstract: Die zahlreichen Schicksale der Verfolgten des Nationalsozialismus sind faktenreich belegt, stehen aber im Spannungsfeld zur regionalen Erinnerungskultur nach 1945. Was bedeuten diese Spannungen heute? Maria Anna Willer untersucht Strukturen und Prozesse der Ausgrenzung in der Face-to-Face-Gesellschaft eines Dorfes am bayrischen Alpenrand zur Zeit der NS-Herrschaft und beleuchtet dessen Erinnerungskultur. In Anlehnung an Foucault beschreibt sie im Modell eines »Dispositivs der NS-Verfolgung« die engmaschigen Strukturen der Kontrolle und Überwachung sowie Widerstand und Hilfeleistungen als Kategorien der NS-Diktatur auf dem Dorf. Es zeigt sich: Nach 1945 ist eine Kontinuität der Ausgrenzung erkennbar, wenn die Erinnerung an Opfer der NS-Verfolgung verdrängt wird.

Wie stehen das Erzählen und das Erleben in der Gegenwart im Zusammenhang mit dem Erleben und dem Erzählen in der Vergangenheit? At a time of intensified interest in issues of race and racism, the burgeoning influence of corporations like AncestryDNA and 23andMe has sparked debates about the commodification of identity, the antiracist potential of genetic science, and the promises and pitfalls of using DNA as a source of 'objective' knowledge about the past. This book engages these debates by looking at the ways genomic ancestry testing has been used in Brazil and the United States to address the histories and legacies of slavery, from personal genealogical projects to collective racial politics.

Hektik und Geschäftigkeit im urbanen Raum scheinen Menschen zu Funktionsträgern zu verwandeln. Sie erzählt von ihrer einstigen Bedeutung und ihrem Untergang und besichtigt in Wäldern, auf Feldern, im Watt oder in Asphaltwüsten die Überreste einstiger Größe. Ein kurzweiliger Atlas für alle, die schon immer ahnten, dass unter unseren Füßen eine versunkene Welt liegt. Auf dem Grund des Bodensees finden sich Reste großer Pfahlbausiedlungen aus prähistorischer Zeit. An der Ostsee lag die kosmopolitische Siedlung Haithabu, ein Knotenpunkt zwischen Skandinavien, dem Baltikum und Westeuropa. Die nordfriesische Stadt Rungholt versank im 14. Jahrhundert in einer Sturmflut. Als man schon glaubte, sie existiere nur in den Sagen, fand man ihre Überreste im Watt. Von dem großen jüdischen Ghetto an der Außenseite der Frankfurter Stadtmauer, das bis ins 19. Jahrhundert existierte, sind heute nur noch Reste erhalten. Im 20. Jahrhundert mussten Ortschaften der innerdeutschen Grenze oder Stauseen weichen, und bis heute werden Dörfer für den Braunkohleabbau weggebaggert. Pia Volk beschreibt kenntnisreich das Schicksal von 30 exemplarischen Orten, die von unseren Landkarten verschwunden sind, und lässt uns über ein versunkenes Deutschland staunen, das hier und da noch an die Oberfläche ragt.

    Abstract: Wer von Erbe im Zusammenhang mit Identität spricht, verspricht sich und Anderen "Kontinuität" und "Stabilität". Das Versprechen hält indes nur so lange, wie sich Menschen auf die damit verbundenen Erzählungen einlassen. Da diese zunehmend hinterfragt werden und der Begriff "Identität" im politischen Raum zu einer umkämpften Kategorie avanciert ist, werden auch die lange gehegten, gewohnten "Konstruktionen" instabil. Dies zeigt sich insbesondere in Momenten des Konflikts, der übergriffigen Inanspruchnahme und des Verlusts. Der Titel "Instabile Konstruktionen" verweist zugleich auf die beiden Kernbereiche des Kollegs: einerseits auf Architektur und Denkmalpflege, in denen der Begriff Konstruktion sich auf bauliche Manifestationen bezieht, von denen eine gewisse Haltbarkeit und Dauerhaftigkeit erwartet wird und andererseits auf die Kultur- und Sozialwissenschaften, wo Konstruktion die soziale Herstellung symbolischer Sinnwelten meint. Ins Zentrum rückt so der Anspruch, die materielle Umwelt im Wechselverhältnis zu ihrer sozialen Gemachtheit zu verstehen.

    Abstract: Orte werden von Natur und Kultur geprägt, sind mit Ideen verbunden und werden erst im Gespräch mit anderen Menschen zur Heimat. In der Geobotanik geht es um die Beziehungen der Pflanzen zu ihren Wuchsorten, zum Boden und zum Klima. Der Standort, an dem Pflanzen wachsen, ist von einer langen Geschichte und vielfältigen Einflüssen der Menschen geprägt. Daher setzt geobotanisches Arbeiten stets auch die Auseinandersetzung mit Geologie, Geographie und Klimatologie, aber vor allem mit historischen Abläufen und kulturgeschichtlichen Fachgebieten voraus. Es müssen immer wieder Brücken geschlagen werden von naturwissenschaftlichen zu kulturwissenschaftlichen Themen. Diese Form von Interdisziplinarität ermöglicht es, eine Heimat zu erkennen und zu beschreiben. Über Landschaften, Heimaten und deren Pflanzen hat Hansjörg Küster in den letzten Jahrzehnten immer wieder publiziert, für Zeitungen und Zeitschriften, wissenschaftliche Veröffentlichungen, Überblicksdarstellungen und Handbücher. Oft stehen Landschaften im Mittelpunkt, die man als Heimaten verstehen kann und in denen man Menschen aus Nah und Fern integrieren kann - wenn man nur darüber spricht. Die Beiträge dieses Buches geben dafür vielerlei Anregungen.

    Abstract: ‘Race Is Everything’ looks at ideas of ‘racial science’ in the nineteenth century and the first half of the twentieth century, and how art was influenced by them. It looks at race in general, but with a particular concentration on attitudes towards and representations of people of African and Jewish descent. David Bindman argues that behind all racial ideas is the belief that outward appearance, and especially skull-shape, can be correlated with inner character and intelligence, and that these could be used to create a seemingly scientific hierarchy of races. This book considers many aspects, including the skull as a racial marker; ancient Egypt as a precedent for Southern slavery; Darwin, race and aesthetics; the ‘Mediterranean race’; the visual aspects of eugenics; and the racial politics of Emil Nolde.

    Abstract: A system of myths, symbols, and rituals, dating back to the Paleolithic and Neolithic, survives in present-day imagery. In exploring this system, special attention is drawn to the linkage between ancient and contemporary civilizations of Eurasia and Mesoamerica, as seen in their cosmology, and expressed in common mythological and iconographic themes. The author examines contemporary Middle American and eastern European textiles, especially women's garments, that contain an elaborated sacred code of symbols, and include remnants of the four horizontal directions, and the three vertical worlds that portray the structure of the universe. The cosmology contained in patterns around the world denotes striking parallels that attest to internal connections between different cultures, beyond time and place.

    Abstract: "Ethnographic fieldwork is the hallmark research approach of sociocultural anthropology. Its centrality has not waned since its inception more than a century ago, yet the variety of questions that fieldwork answers have expanded greatly. For instance, anthropologist Olga Lidia Olivia Hernandez studies Aztec dance collectives in multiple sites in Baja California, Mexico, and California, USA. She conducts fieldwork to understand why Aztec dance emerged as a form of ethnicity on the US - Mexico border among non-indigenous participants, and how national, political, religious, and bodily processes are involved in the reappropriation of Aztec dancing (Hernandez, 2018). Taking a more multidisciplinary approach in her fieldwork among Orangutan care workers in Borneo, anthropologist Juno Salazar Parreñas draws on anthropology, primatology, Southeast Asian history, gender studies, queer theory, and science and technology studies. She explores the violence care workers and Orangutans experience. She asks if conservation biology can turn away from violent techniques to ensure Orangutan population growth and embrace a feminist sense of welfare (Parreñas 2018). Anthony Kwame Harrison conducts fieldwork in San Francisco among the underground hip hop scene. Harrison interviewed area hip hop artists and also performed as the emcee "Mad Squirrel." His immersion in the subculture allowed him a unique vantage point to examine the changing nature of race among young Americans, as well as issues of ethnic and racial identification, and how different ethnic groups engage hip hop in different ways as a means to claim racial and establish subcultural authenticity.     Abstract: Im Anschluss an bisherige Forschungen zu Heimatzeitschriften der Deutschen in und aus dem östlichen Europa am IVDE Freiburg rückten in den letzten Jahren Fragestellungen zu ihrer visuellen Gestaltung ins Blickfeld. Erste Untersuchungen waren der Gestaltung von Titelseiten, medienspezifischen Werbeanzeigen oder beteiligten Akteuren gewidmet. Die Beiträge dieses Bandes nähern sich dieser Thematik an und ergänzen bisherige Ergebnisse mit neuen Aspekten. Neben Überlegungen zu Brüchen und Kontinuitäten bei der visuellen Konstruktion von Periodika, die an Vorgängerzeitschriften in den Herkunftsgebieten anknüpften, werden Bildmotive, Bild-Text-Bezüge und unterschiedliche Deutungskontexte bei Kunstwerken und Fotografien diskutiert. Weitere Beiträge erörtern ausgewählte Gesichtspunkte der Geschichte der Fotografie in den Ländern der Böhmischen Krone und der Bildmotive in der Amateurfotografie vor 1945 sowie die Reproduktion solcher Aufnahmen in Heimatzeitschriften nach 1945. Auch Fragen der frühen fotografischen Reportage in den 1950er-Jahren und des fotografischen Blickes von Heimatreisenden werden beleuchtet.     Abstract: Current cultural theory makes much of the role of the imagination of the "primitive" and the "indigenous" in the making of modern empires. In this study of Russian and Soviet governance of the Evenki hunters and reindeer herders of Northern Siberia, the author explores the reverse side of this social imaginary, exploring what he calls "cultures of statehood" among the very people whom the state consistently rendered stateless. He examines the political uses of state institutions and the practices of identification with the state by indigenous Siberians who are traditionally described as stateless kin-based peoples whose cultures are determined by long-term adaptation to the harsh northern environment and for whom the proximity of state institutions is solely a cause of suffering. Ssorin-Chaikov's goal is not merely to undo the displacement of indigenous lifestyles and identities to the imagined landscape beyond and before the Russian/Soviet state. It is, rather, to chart forms of government that expand alongside displacement, to examine the social life of the state in everyday contexts extending well beyond formal institutions, and to theorize statehood from a unique vantage point
