Abstract: Discussions of land tenure in social anthropology have usually been deeply embedded in broader empirical and theoretical explanations of social, economic, legal, and political institutions. In this volume the editors have sought to correct the emphasis of previous studies by focusing our attention directly on land tenure in Oceania, without, it must be added, losing sight of the connections between land tenure principles and general social structure. The editors have deliberately looked for similarities by analyzing each tenure system from the same analytical and conceptual perspective. Chapters 1 and 9 specifically discuss the methodological and theoretical framework that evolved in the course of analyzing the seven tenure systems described in chapters 2 through 8. The difficulties and problems encountered by the contributors in presenting their data in comparable form is reflected by the more than three years of analysis, writing, editing, and rewriting necessary to complete this volume. The seven substantive ethnographic chapters illustrate the range and diversity in the land tenure practices which are found within the vast culture area of Oceania. The similarities in basic tenure principles between all seven systems seem all the more remarkable in light of the varied geographical and cultural settings of the seven societies. In all of these societies we find a complete absence of fee simple ownership and a corresponding presence of entailed family estates. The ethnography reveals tenure principles that detail an impressive number and variety of separate categories of property. Each category, in turn, includes an even greater number of rights and duties that symbolize different forms of proprietorship. The differential allocation of these rights and duties among persons and groups represents the exact point of connection between land tenure and social structure. For example, kinship principles that specify the distribution of authority within age, sex, descent, and status categories converge on such tenure principles as land use, land distribution, succession, and inheritance. Principles of political organization concerning the relative scaling of authority and power within the society have clear parallels in the land tenure system, where corporate and individual tenure privileges are differentiated. Economic principles subtly merge with land tenure principles in social domains, where land as a resource and land as a value intersect.

Abstract: A classroom text for conservatory and college music students that goes far beyond the mere fulfilling of curriculum requirements for non-piano majors. Designed specifically for group instruction, Class Piano teaches such valuable skills as sight-reading simple piano pieces, accompaniments, an d vocal scores; harmonizing melodies; playing by ear; and improvising. The author uses as teaching examples short piano pieces, a Bach chorale, themes from familiar symphonies, folk, patriotic, and popular songs, and original compositions. Along with the keyboard techniques she skillfully presents a basic course in music theory and with a light touch instills the principles of good musicianship

Abstract: The Kapingamarangi lexicon is designed for use by the Kapinga in their own classrooms as a teaching resource, by comparative linguists interested in Polynesian languages, and as an aid for those learning Kapinga. The lexicon presents an exhaustive list of 6,000 root words and their use in deriving words, compounds, and phrases. An introduction delineates the rules of word structure in the Kapinga language in simple, nontechnical English with explanatory footnotes in Kapinga. In addition, the introduction includes material directed primarily to linguists dealing with such problems as word classes, problems of reduplication, and the like. The lexicon itself is arranged in three listings: Kapingamarangi-English, English-Kapingamarangi, and by root words, demonstrating how they are systematically derived and compounded

Abstract: "Tahiti is far famed yet too little known." Thus wrote J. M. Orsmond in 1848, and the same assertion can be made in 1972. Thousands of pages had been published about Tahiti and its neighboring islands when Orsmond uttered his judgment, and tens of thousands have been published since that time, but a unified, comprehensive, and detailed description of the pre-European ways of life of the inhabitants of those Islands is yet to appear in print. The present work, lengthy as it is, makes no such claim to comprehensiveness; rather, it is concerned mainly with the social relations of those inhabitants, and it serves up only enough about their technology, their religion, their aesthetic expressions, and so forth to place descriptions of their social relations in context and render them more comprehensible. Volumes 1 and 2 of this work are a reconstruction of the Islanders' way of life as it was believed to have been just before it began to be transformed by European influence-a period labeled the Late Indigenous Era. Volume 3 covers events in Tahiti and Mo'orea from about 1767 to 1815-a period labeled the Early European Era

Abstract: No list of voyages to Hawaii has appeared in book form since the interesting group of Hawaiian bibliography was published in the 1860s. It has been worthwhile to reexamine this subject of voyages to Hawaii, although a complete enumeration of the vessels has not been attempted in the present publication. This edition is primarily an enlargement rather than a revised version of Miss Judd's original book

Abstract: Nature and Necessity: An Essay in Physical Ontology presents genuinely new solutions to some salient problems in metaphysics. Fisk provides a new argument, based on the notion of conditional probability, for the claim that induction presupposes necessary connections. After devising an ontology of physical individuals to provide an objective basis for necessary connections, he uses this ontology to solve problems about relations, action, time, capacities, and events

Abstract: After experiencing life in London, the narrator and her brother discover that they are Canadians, not colonials. Their encounters with Englishmen and Americans demonstrate that there are three distinct countries, each with a character of its own, but sharing common interests. This is an early novel on the eternal theme of identity.

Abstract: This book explains the new structural methods of research in behavior and communication. This application of the method grew out of discoveries made during an investigation of the psychotherapy of schizophrenia, when it was found that even trained observers could not agree on what they had actually seen during a given session. When the sessions were filmed, the observers' objectivity improved but the basic problem of data reduction and interpretation remained unsolved. The final solution came when the directors of research applied the method of context analysis worked out in the field of communication research. Dr. Scheflen shows that analysis of communicational structure, with emphasis on non-verbal behavior-"body language"-is a logical approach to studies of this type

Abstract: Vroom and Yetton select a critical aspect of leadership style-the extent to which the leader encourages the participation of his subordinates in decision-making. They describe a normative model that shows the specific leadership style needed in different classes of situations. Other chapters discuss how leaders actually behave in different situations. They look at differences in leadership styles, and what situations induce people to display autocratic or participative behavior.

Abstract: Leopold's original bibliography of 1952 was considered to deal with a rather esoteric branch of psycholinguistics. Since then, however, an explosion of research in the field has occurred, which this new revision accurately reflects. To a judicious selection from the old work Mr. Slobin has added 763 new items, standardizing the reference format and adding a unique computerized concordance. Leopold's Bibliography of Child Language is an invaluable reference work in child language study

Abstract: Writers have been deeply involved with film virtually from its inception in the 1890's down to the present moment. Their involvement is a story of transition from wonder and optimism about the new medium to a gradual disenchantment and a growing tendency to regard cinema as a destructive rival rather than a creative partner. Authors on Film reflects the wide range of attitudes toward film as the world 's most celebrated writers candidly express their opinions. The articles include studies of the silent film and the transition to sound, general statements on the film medium and the film-maker, discussions of the problems of screenwriting, and descriptions of the Hollywood scene, past and present. Among the thirty- five contributors are James Baldwin, Bertolt Brecht, Jean Cocteau, John Dos Passos, T. S. Eliot, William Faulkner, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Andre Gide, Maxim Gorky, Aldous Huxley, Jack Kerouac, Thomas Mann, Somerset Maugham, Jean-Paul Sartre, Bernard Shaw, Upton Sinclair, Leo Tolstoy, H. G. Wells, and Virginia Woolf

Abstract: Lithuania in Crisis: Nationalism to Communism, 1939-1940 presents a scholarly, thorough, and absorbing study of what is probably the most fateful chapter in the life of the Lithuanian nation: the disappearance of its short-lived second period of national independence during the years 1926-1939 and its absorption into the Soviet Union in 1940. Developments in Lithuania during these years illuminate many events throughout Eastern Europe in the interval between the first and second World Wars. In Lithuania, aas in other liberal-democratic regimes set up in the effervescence of Wilsonian idealism, democratic ideals fell on unreceptive soil, and in less than two decades their governments were transmuted into dictatorship and were soon to succumb to external pressures

Abstract: The cement industry provides an especially suitable framework within which to analyze the spatial efficiency of Soviet planning because of its size and rate of growth, which are among the highest in the economy; its relatively simple cost structure and limited scale economies; the widespread distribution of its raw materials, resulting in narrow and predictable regional production cost variation; and the homogeneity of use of its output, as an input into construction, which makes its demand easier to anticipate than is the demand for many other industrial materials, simplifying the problem of location and facilitating retrospective analysis

Abstract: From Sung times, and throughout the Ming period, one of the dominant philosophies of China had been a dualistic rationalism thought to be firmly grounded on the classics. Tai Chen (1723-1777) was a scholar and philosopher during the Ch'ing period- a time when China produced few philosophic thinkers. He was the greatest of these, and his views are embodied chiefly in Yuan Shan and in Meng Tzu txu-yi shu-cheng. In place of the prevailing Sung dualism, Tai Chen propounded a rationalistic monism seldom before insinuated in a Chinese philosophy. He declines to accept current dogmas and preferred to seek his own truths. His commentaries opposed the time-honored interpretations of Chu Hsi, and he discredited them on purely philosophical grounds. But with few disciples to carry on his teachings, he was virtually forgotten or ignored in China for more than a hundred years after his death. It was not until early in the present century- with China under the pressures of Western aggression and internal disorders-that Tai Chen's nearness to Western thought was rediscovered and his important role in the history of philosophy recognized. Curiously, this first of China's Western-oriented philosophers even today remains little known in the West and his major writings largely untranslated

Thousands of tales, including those from almost all of the major original collections from the Polynesian area, have been examined and their thematic contents cataloged in this work. In his introduction, the author explains the concept of the motif as a basis for cataloging. He quotes from Professor Thompson's definition of a motif: "the smallest element in a tale having the power to persist in tradition," for example, gods, marvelous creatures, magic objects, and certain kinds of incidents. The author believes "the function of an index of motifs is to cite bibliographical sources of narratives containing these viable (often irreducible) story elements, and thus to provide the investigator of specific story ideas with comparative Information." The present work is an attempt to survey thoroughly the totality of Polynesian oral tradition and to indicate the distribution and relationships of narrative materials. Not since the publication of Roland B. Dixon's work on Oceanic mythology in 1916 has this been attempted. This index will be an invaluable reference tool for anyone doing research in Oceanic ethnology and folklore

Abstract: Tagalog is an Austronesian language. It is the language of Manila and the surrounding provinces of Bataan, Bulacan, Rizal, Cavite Laguna, Quezon, Batangas, and Marinduque. It is also spoken widely throughout the Philippines as a second language, with an estimated sixty percent of the population now being able to communicate in this language. Tagalog is the basis of the Philippine national language, Pilipino, and as such is taught in schools throughout the country. In addition to the lessons in this text, there are extensive notes to the teacher, supplementary vocabulary lists, pronunciation drills, and songs

Abstract: This is the first in the PALI Language Text series to deal with a Southeast Asian language. The author's approach in this pronunciation guide owes much to the methodology pioneered by Charles Fries. A basic assumption of this approach is that in learning a new language the problem is not first of all learning vocabulary but "mastery of the sound system." Moreover, the problems of learning a new sound system vary with the native language of the student. This manual is designed specifically for the English-speaking student and concentrates on the particular difficulties an English-speaking person would have in learning to speak Vietnamese. There are no outstanding grammatical differences in the three main Vietnamese dialects, but there are some significant phonological differences. The Saigon dialect forms the main core of the lessons here, but materials and drills of standard Hanoi Vietnamese have been included in review lessons for recognition purposes

Abstract: This fascinating study presents for the first time the full story of Eisenstein's disastrous attempt to make a great film in Mexico, a motion picture "symphony" of Mexican life, history, culture, and the perpetual Mexican fiesta of death. It clarifies the relationship between Eisenstein and Upton Sinclair, the American novelist who financed the picture, and reveals the causes and consequences of Sinclair's withdrawal of financial backing. Eisenstein was at the height of his creative powers when he began working on the Mexican film. The fiasco that ended the project was to leave a permanent mark on his life and work, while Sinclair was to be vilified on both sides of the Atlantic as the desecrator of the most important film of the world's greatest motion picture director. The book presents the story of these events in a unique manner by embedding the actual correspondence of the main participants in a commentary by Professors Geduld and Gottesman, who have endeavored to tell the truth about a tragic episode in the history of the cinema
