    Abstract: Building a National Literature boldly takes issue with traditional literary criticism for its failure to explain how literature as a body is created and shaped by institutional forces. Peter Uwe Hohendahl approaches literary history by focusing on the material and ideological structures that determine the canonical status of writers and works. He examines important elements in the making of a national literature, including the political and literary public sphere, the theory and practice of literary criticism, and the emergence of academic criticism as literary history. Hohendahl considers such key aspects of the process in Germany as the rise of liberalism and nationalism, the delineation of the borders of German literature, the idea of its history, the understanding of its cultural function, and the notion of a canon of major and minor authors

    Abstract: In treating memory as a cultural rather than an individual faculty, this book provides an account of how bodily practices are transmitted in, and as, traditions. Most studies of memory as a cultural faculty focus on written, or inscribed transmissions of memories. Paul Connerton, on the other hand, concentrates on bodily (or incorporated) practices, and so questions the currently dominant idea that literary texts may be taken as a metaphor for social practices generally. The author argues that images of the past and recollected knowledge of the past are conveyed and sustained by ritual performances and that performative memory is bodily. Bodily social memory is an essential aspect of social memory, but it is an aspect which has until now been badly neglected. An innovative study, this work should be of interest to researchers into social, political and anthropological thought as well as to graduate and undergraduate students

    Abstract: Abstract: Es werden vier Varianten der Gesellschaftsanalyse und eine Variante der Kulturanalyse der paradoxen Entwicklung der modernen Gesellschaft hinsichtlich ihrer Erklärung der Produktion und Reproduktion der modernen Kultur und Gesellschaft untersucht: Die Produktion und Reproduktion von Kapital, Macht, Institutionen, Konsens und Sinn. Die Untersuchung zeigt, daß die Gesellschaftsanalyse blind bleibt, nämlich eindimensional, oberflächlich, übergeneralisiert, simplifiziert und sprachlos, wenn sie nicht die von ihr herausgehobene Dimension der gesellschaftlichen Reproduktion zu den anderen Dimensionen und zur kulturellen Reproduktion in Beziehung setzt. Die Kulturanalyse dagegen legt tiefere Schichten frei und sagt mehr über den Sinn der gesellschaftlichen Entwicklung, sie bleibt aber unscharf, unterspezifiziert, zu radikal und praxisfern, wenn sie nicht zu den verschiedenen Dimensionen der gesellschaftlichen Reproduktion in Beziehung gesetzt wird.     Abstract: Abstract: Auf einer empirisch-deskriptiven Ebene wird der Frage nachgegangen, ob es typisch städtische Lebensstile gibt. Nach einigen Anmerkungen zum Lebensstilkonzept wird anhand einer Lebensstilstudie aus Österreich die räumliche Verteilung von Lebensstilen aufgezeigt. Einen typischen städtischen Lebensstil gibt es nach diesen Ergebnissen nicht, wohl aber laßt sich eine Region auf Grund seiner Lebensstile charakterisieren. Durch die Kopplung von Stadt und Land durch dauernde Interaktionsprozesse (Pendelwesen, Massenmedien, Tourismus) kommt es zu einer Diffusion von Lebensstilen. Es wird die These vertreten, daß mit dem Begriff Lebensstil städtische und regionale Differenzierungsprozesse genauer und adäquater beschrieben werden können als mit den klassischen Begriffen von Schicht und Klasse.     Abstract: This book systematically examines prevailing cultural patterns in contemporary American society. Using information on several thousands of cultural organisations, including elite ones (such as opera and chamber music companies) and popular cultural ones (such as cinemas and live rock concerts), Professor Blau examines the geography of culture, the changing demands for culture, the interdependencies among cultural organisations of different kinds, the nature of labour markets for artists, and the effects of arts subsidies on nonprofit cultural establishments over a ten year period. One of the major conclusions of the book is that the social conditions that support elite and popular culture are increasingly similar over time.

    Abstract: Biology and Freedom, first published in 1989, is an essay on human nature: an attempt to make a just assessment of a species often presented as predominantly and unavoidably violent, grasping, selfish and stupid. Likening human beings to animals is a traditional method of influencing attitudes on morals and politics. But in this book Professor Barnett shows that modern ethology, experimental psychology, genetics and evolutionary theory give the now fashionable misanthropy no authentic support. In doing so he asks whether the theory of evolution has any bearing on Machiavellianism in politics or the concept of original sin; and whether laboratory experiments on the effects of reward and punishment tell us anything about the enigma of free will. Combining the findings of biology with logic and humour, Professor Barnett gives a lucid alternative portrait of humanity in which he stresses the questions that the complexities of human existence will raise long after current myths have faded. This book is for all interested in human nature and the future of human society

    Abstract: Der Verfasser setzt sich zunächst mit der Problematik der "sozialen Degradation" und der Existenz von Randgruppen in der Gesellschaftsordnung des realen Sozialismus auseinander. Hiervon werden jugendliche Problemgruppen abgegrenzt und Perspektiven einer "historisch-konkreten Analyse" dieser Problemgruppen erörtert. Es schließen sich eine Beschreibung des Skinhead-Phänomens als Mode-, Mitläufer-, Trittbrettfahrer- und Gruppenphänomen sowie Erklärungsansätze zur sozialen Herkunft der Skinheads an. Als für Skinheads typische Ideologiefragmente werden ein unreflektiertes Deutschtum, Ausländerfeindlichkeit, Weitergabe von Ideologiefragmenten rechtsradikalen Einschlags sowie Betonung von Männlichkeit herausgearbeitet. Abschließend setzt sich der Verfasser mit dem Arbeitsverhalten der Skinheads auseinander. Dokumentarisches Material zum Berliner "Skinhead-Zwischenfall" am 17. Oktober 1987 ist beigefügt. (ICE)

    Abstract: This book is about change in the Roman Catholic community in England and Wales. It argues that in the post-war years of economic growth and expanded educational opportunities, Catholics born in Great Britain achieved rates of upward social mobility comparable to those of the general population. In so doing there arose a 'new Catholic middle class', likely to be crucial for the future of Roman Catholicism in England and Wales. However, since one quarter of English Catholics were first-generation immigrants who had experienced some downward mobility, it could not be said that English Catholics generally had experienced a 'mobility momentum' relative to the rest of the population. Apart from the effects of social change, post-war Catholicism was also transformed as a result of the religious reforms legitimated by the Second Vatican Council in the early 1960s. The net effect of these social and religious forces on English Catholicism was the dissolution of the boundaries which had formerly defended a 'fortress' church in a hostile world. The book identifies this, inter alia, in the widespread heterodoxy of belief and practice, and in the decline of marital endogamy and communal involvement.

    Abstract: Abstract: Kurzbericht über eine Podiumsdiskussion während des Deutschen Soziologentages von 1986 zum Thema "Technik und Arbeit". Es werden gesellschaftspolitische Überlegungen zur zukünftigen Bedeutung von Arbeit und einige Implikationen für die entwickelten Industriegesellschaften diskutiert. Den Thesen, die eine "Banalisierung" bzw. "Egalisierung" der Arbeit erwarten, wird widersprochen; für wahrscheinlich wird unter dem Einfluß der Informationstechnologien eine Zurückdrängung unqualifizierter Arbeit und ein Bedeutungsanstieg qualifizierter Tätigkeiten gehalten. Inwieweit die betriebliche Arbeit heute mehr Chancen als früher böte, um die Arbeit in den Dienst eines kritischen Bewußtseins zu stellen, wurde kontrovers eingeschätzt. (psz)

    Note: Auf Einladung der Rheinisch-Westfälischen Akademie der Wissenschaften habe ich in ihrer Jahresversammlung am 15. Mai 1985 über das Thema "Kann die moderne Gesellschaft sich auf ökologische Gefährdungen einstellen?" 1 referiert. Die knappe Vortragszeit ließ es jedoch nicht zu, den Gedankengang in der Differenziertheit auszuführen, die erforderlich gewesen wäre. Vor allem war es nicht möglich, die bei aller Unterschiedlichkeit sehr ähnliche Reaktionsweise vieler einzelner Funktionssysteme zu behandeln. Die Hauptthese des Vortrags, daß die moderne Gesellschaft infolge ihrer strukturellen Differenzierung in unterschiedliche Funktionssysteme sowohl zu wenig als auch zu viel Resonanz erzeuge, konnte nur pauschal vorgestellt werden. Erst aus der Einsicht in diesen Sachverhalt folgt jedoch, daß die Lösung des Problems nicht in neuen Wertvorstellungen, nicht in einer neuen Moral oder in der akademischen Ausarbeitung einer Umweltethik liegen kann. Die hier vorgelegte Schrift ergänzt die Argumentation des Vortrags und führt sie, wenngleich nur in sehr groben Skizzen, für die wichtigsten Funktionssysteme Der Vortragstext ist in der Schriftenreihe der Akademie unter dem angegebenen Titel publiziert (RWAkW G278, Opladen 1985). 7 der modernen Gesellschaft durch. Bei sehr verschiedenen Funktionen, binären Codes und Programmen für "richtiges" Erleben und Handeln ergibt sich ein in den Grundstrukturen sehr ähnliches Bild. Das berechtigt es, die ökologischen Probleme auf das Gesellschaftssystem zu beziehen und nicht nur auf politisches oder ökonomisches Fehlverhalten oder auf unzureichendes ethisches Verantwortungsgefühl

    Abstract: Since the 1940s, there has been an explosion of writings, both scientific and nonscientific, about the question of 'identity' and what it means to be an individual in today's world. This book examines sociological perspectives on identity in order to illuminate the perennial problem of defining the human person, and to pose an alternative definition of identity based on it being socially constructed. Beginning with a review of previous studies of identity, the authors present a set of propositions for organizing the wide range of uses of the term, and for arriving at an adequate definition of it. Identity is then analysed in two contexts: gender identity, linked to present bodies; and prenatal and postmortem identities, linked to future and past bodies. Whereas gender identity reveals the powerful but breakable link between body type and identity, prenatal and postmortem identities illustrate the symbolic reality and partial independence of identity from any corporeal existence. This is an innovative and insightful study which will appeal to all those concerned with understanding the nature of human identity.

    Abstract: Abstract: Der vorliegende Forschungsbericht ergänzt einen bereits im April 1985 vorgelegten Bericht über die Zukunftsorientierung junger Arbeitnehmer in der DDR. Er stützt sich auf Daten einer Studie "Die Jugend und der XI. Parteitag der SED". Die Ergebnisse der zuerst genannten Studie sollen mit denen unter der Wirkung des Parteitags erreichten verglichen werden. Es wurden rund 3500 Jugendliche (16 bis 30 Jahre) und ca. 300 Personen im Alter von 31 bis 50 Jahren verschiedener Klassen und Schichten einbezogen. "Es wurde davon ausgegangen, daß der Parteitag die Weichen für die gesellschaftliche Entwicklung der DDR bis zur Jahrtausendwende gestellt hat und es interessierte, wie zuversichtlich die jungen Leute unter diesen konkreten Orientierungen die gesellschaftliche Entwicklung in der DDR einschätzen."
