The authors in this volume take an alternative perspective, approaching these differences from a textual angle. Their findings suggest that statements on marriage are not only conditioned by social or religious influences and pressures but also by the communicative and situative parameters governing speech and writing.

    Abstract: Rethinking the Region argues that regions are not simply bounded spaces on a map.     Abstract: The contributions to this volume cover a broad range of issues in language policy that are hotly debated in every corner of the globe. The articles included investigate the implications of language policies on the notion of language rights as the issues are played out in very specific circumstances - from the courtroom in Australia to the legislature in California to the educational system in England to the administrative practices of the European Commission. The authors explore conflicts between basic conceptions of fairness in justice, administration and education on the one hand, and political and economic realities on the other. Articles focus on langage issues in the United States, Canada, Brazil, England, France, Slovakia, Russia, Sri Lanka, Australia and several African states. Other articles consider the implications of new supernational agreements - the European Union, NAFTA, GATT, the OAU - on language issues in the signatory states. In sum the volume offers an extensive presentation of current issues and practices in language policy and linguistic human rights.

    Abstract: Main description: Anhand einer umfangreichen Sammlung englisch- und deutschsprachiger Beispiele werden Mißverständnisse empirisch untersucht. Die Grundlage bildet ein auf der Sprechakttheorie aufbauendes Kommunikationsmodell. Es ermöglicht eine Ursachenanalyse von Mißverständnissen ebenso wie eine Typologie auf Grund verschiedener Aspekte der Äußerungsfunktion, die vom Mißverstehen betroffen sind. Überlegungen anhand benachbarter interaktiver Phänomene wie unbemerktem Mißverstehen und Nichtverstehen führen darüber hinaus zu dem Ergebnis, daß vollständiges Verstehen eher ein soziales Konstrukt als eine interaktive Realität darstellt.
    Abstract: Main description: In this book misunderstandings are analyzed using a pragmatically-oriented modell of communication. The empirical basis is a large corpus of examples from English and German. The theoretical approach makes it possible in many instances to identify the reason why a misunderstanding occurs. A three-level concept of communicative functions, making use of some fundamental concepts of speech act theory, leads to a classification of three major types of misunderstandings. An investigation into the relationship between misunderstandings and phenomena such as nonunderstanding and unnoticed misunderstandings leads to the conclusion that 'total' understanding must be regarded as a social construct rather than as interactive reality.

Auf dieserGrundlage werden konkrete Prozesse der Textproduktion hinsichtlich ihrerrealzeitlichen Verläufe sowie der auftretenden Planungs-, Formulierungs-und Revisionsaktivitäten genauer analysiert. Die Studie kommt zu demErgebnis, daß die bisher vorliegenden und weitgehend dem kognitivenParadigma verpflichteten Einsichten in die Natur des Schreibprozesses inwesentlichen Teilen ergänzt oder modifiziert werden müssen.
    Abstract: Main description: This study proceeds from the working assumption that writing may plausibly be regarded as a form of complex linguistic action. On this basis concrete processes characteristic of text production are subjected to closer analysis with regard to their real-time extension and the planning, wording and revision activities they involve. The conclusion arrived at is that, with their almost total allegiance to the cognitive paradigm, existing insights on the nature of the writing process need to be substantially extended or modified.
