    Abstract: Was heißt Globalisierung »wirklich«? Die Grenze zwischen Mexiko und den USA hat sich zum paradigmatischen »borderland« des globalen Zeitalters entwickelt. Das Buch führt die Leser an diese Grenze und begleitet Arbeitsmigranten in der nordmexikanischen Stadt Ciudad Juárez. Empirisch fundiert erzählt der Autor davon, was es bedeutet, für transnationale Konzerne und nördliche Konsumenten zu arbeiten. Auf diesem Wege wird eine vielfach gebrochene Stadt vorgestellt, deren Bewohner ihre Identitäten ständig neu verhandeln müssen und dabei soziale und kulturelle Differenzen in räumliche Grenzen überführen. Die Darstellung gleichsam globalisierter wie ortsgebundener Lebenswirklichkeiten ist eingelassen in einen anspruchsvollen theoretischen Rahmen und versteht sich als Plädoyer für eine post-territoriale Geographie

    Abstract: Arnd Uhle untersucht das Verhältnis von freiheitlichem Verfassungsstaat und kultureller Identität, das bislang kaum – wenn, dann lediglich partiell – erforscht wurde. Der Autor beleuchtet die Relevanz der kulturellen Identität für Entstehung, Gestalt und Fortbestand des freiheitlichen Verfassungsstaates aus verfassungstheoretischer, aus verfassungsrechtlicher und schließlich aus europarechtlicher Perspektive.Bereits aus verfassungstheoretischer Sicht ergibt sich dabei, daß die kulturelle Identität gleichermaßen Entstehungs- wie auch Geltungsbedingung freiheitlicher Verfassungsstaatlichkeit ist, weil der freiheitliche Staat in vielfältiger Weise an die kulturelle Identität anknüpft. Eine Betrachtung aus verfassungsrechtlicher Perspektive unterstreicht diesen Befund und belegt, daß namentlich das deutsche Grundgesetz in einer prima facie zwar komplex und unüberschaubar erscheinenden, letztlich aber systematisch geordneten und differenzierenden Weise an die kulturelle Identität anknüpft – und diese angesichts ihrer Bedeutung für den dauerhaften Fortbestand des freiheitlichen Verfassungsstaates überdies durch das in der Habilitationsschrift erstmals entfaltete grundgesetzliche Staatsziel der Vitalität und Dauerhaftigkeit der freiheitlichen Verfassungsordnung mit verfassungsrechtlichem Schutz umhegt.     Abstract: Die Familienpolitik ist ein spätes Kind des deutschen Sozialstaats. Sie etablierte sich vor dem Hintergrund tief greifender gesellschaftlicher Umbrüche. Der kriegsbedingte Männermangel und der "Scheidungsboom" wurden nach 1945 als Zeichen der Auflösung traditioneller Familienformen gedeutet; später verwiesen Schlagworte wie "Pillenknick" und "sexuelle Revolution" auf einen weit reichenden Wertewandel in Familienfragen. Wie die Familienpolitik auf solche Herausforderungen reagierte, zeigt die Studie im Blick auf drei zentrale Konfliktfelder: den finanziellen Familienlastenausgleich, die Sexualaufklärung und Familienberatung sowie die Vorschulerziehung in Kindergärten. Während der Familienlastenausgleich auf Bundesebene zwischen 1965 und 1975 stagnierte, ist in den beiden anderen Bereichen ein Aufbruch zu beobachten, der in erster Linie von den Bundesländern getragen wurde. Dies wird am Beispiel Bayerns dargestellt. So kombiniert die Studie zwei große Themenkreise: Sie zeigt, wie die Familienpolitik zu einem eigenständigen Politikfeld mit vielfältigen Querschnittsaufgaben wurde, und sie lenkt das Augenmerk auf den Föderalismus als eine charakteristische Funktionsbedingung des deutschen Sozialstaates.

    Abstract: Identity in the Age of the New Economy is a multi-faceted view of contemporary employment and identity that questions a number of the myths related to the so-called new economy, knowledge society or network society. It argues that one of the most striking things about much contemporary theorizing on work and identity is the epochalist terms in which it is framed: changing forms of identity and subjectivity are assumed to be consequences of a shift to an entirely new economic, social and cultural era, signalled by concepts such as postmodernity, risk society, network society or new economy.

    Abstract: Das 20. Jahrhundert ist oft als das Jahrhundert der Gewalt bezeichnet worden. Daher mangelt es nicht an Gewaltphänomenen, die es genauer zu untersuchen gilt, als dies bislang geschehen ist. In diesem Band werden deswegen Gewalttaten aus neuen Perspektiven untersucht, neue Interpretationen ihrer Entstehung vorgestellt und neue Herausforderungen der sozialwissenschaftlichen Gewaltforschung debattiert. Folgende Fragen werden unter anderem in diesem gesellschaftspolitisch folgenreichen Buch behandelt: Kann der lange dominierende Begriff der physischen Gewalt überhaupt noch leitend sein, und muß die Gewaltanalyse sich nicht wieder stärker der strukturellen Gewalt zuwenden, da zunehmend eine »Gewalt ohne Gesicht« auftritt? Stecken die Ursachen im Gewalthandeln selbst, so daß Hinweise auf soziale Hintergründe etwa in die Irre führen? Verlieren sozialwissenschaftliche Forschungen aufgrund neuer biologischer Ansätze völlig an Relevanz? Biographische Informationen Wilhelm Heitmeyer, geboren 1945, war von 1996 bis 2013 Direktor des Instituts für interdisziplinäre Konflikt- und Gewaltforschung der Universität Bielefeld und arbeitet dort jetzt als Forschungsprofessor.     Abstract: Studies of social movements and of political parties have usually treated them as separate and distinct. In fact they are deeply intertwined. Social movements often shape electoral competition and party policies; they can even give rise to new parties. At the same time, political parties and campaigns shape the opportunities, personnel, and outcomes of social movements. In many countries, electoral democracy itself is the outcome of social movement actions. This book, first published in 2003, examines the interaction of social movements and party politics since the 1950s, both in the United States and around the world. In studies of the US Civil Rights movement, the New Left, the Czechoslovak dissident movements, the Mexican struggle for democracy, and other episodes, this volume shows how party politics and social movements cannot be understood without appreciating their intimate relationship.

    Abstract: Main description: Die Außenpolitik der DDR ist bis heute weitgehend eine "terra incognita". Joachim Scholtyseck betritt mit seinem Lehrbuch also Neuland: Er führt systematisch in die Außenpolitik des "zweiten deutschen Staates" ein und diskutiert außerdem die Interpretationen und Kontroversen der Forschung. In einer einzigartigen politischen Konstruktion musste die DDR einerseits Außenpolitik auch als Deutschlandpolitik betreiben. Andererseits blieb sie bis zu ihrem Untergang ein von der UdSSR abhängiges Gebilde. Wie alle Akteure war die DDR in die Bedingungen der internationalen Politik in den Zeiten des Kalten Krieges, der Détente und schließlich des "Zweiten Kalten Krieges" eingebettet. Ihre Außenbeziehungen stellten zudem einen Sonderfall dar, weil eine Außenpolitik unter marxistischen Vorzeichen einen radikalen Bruch mit bisherigen Traditionen der deutschen Geschichte bedeutete.     Abstract: Die Reformierbarkeit der Demokratie wurde von den Herausgebern als Festschrift zur Emeritierung von Fritz W. Scharpf konzipiert. Der Band vereint Beiträge von namhaften deutschen und ausländischen Sozialwissenschaftlern, die sich mit zentralen Aspekten des reichhaltigen Werks eines der einflussreichsten und national wie international renommiertesten deutschen Politikwissenschaftler beschäftigen. Behandelt werden Kernfragen von Politik und Demokratie, wobei im Zentrum des Interesses die Handlungs- und Innovationsfähigkeit moderner westlicher Nationalstaaten steht. Alle Beiträge – fünf in englischer und sechs in deutscher Sprache – wurden eigens für den Band verfasst und repräsentieren in ihrer Gesamtheit den neuesten Stand wissenschaftlicher Reflektion über Entwicklungstendenzen und aktuelle Probleme des modernen demokratischen Gemeinwesens.

    Abstract: Transactions often differ on important dimensions from spot exchanges on perfect neo-classical markets. Information is seldom complete and instantaneous exchange is just as rare as full competition. The authors in this volume extend the standard economic model stressing the proposition that the social context is an important determinant of the governance of transactions. To foster the development of a body of cumulative knowledge in the new economic sociology, this approach is consistently applied to a diversity of topics including purchase relations, strategic alliances, and relations among lawyers and clients as well as employers and employees. This volume is divided in three parts. The first part surveys purposive behaviour models in research on governance as well as theoretical work extending these models. The contributions in the second and third part all have an empirical component and deal with governance in the various phases of exchange relations: search and selection, negotiating and contracting, contract execution and performance, and conflict regulation. The second part focuses on governance in markets, while the third part discusses governance in organizations

    Abstract: The Economics of Demand-Led Growth is a collection of specially written essays that develop and apply the theory of demand-led growth. Long-run growth is usually portrayed as a supply-determined process. The contributions to this volume, however, are rooted in the theory of demand-led growth. In addition to general discussions of the role of demand in the long-run, the volume contains essays in the Kaldorian and Kaleckian traditions, and a section on the relationship between demand-led growth and structural change. The conclusion reached is that current neglect of the role of demand in analyses of long-run growth is unwarranted

    Abstract: With the outbreak of the Korean War, the poor, rural West German state of Rhineland-Palatinate became home to some of the largest American military installations outside the United States. In GIs and Frauleins, Maria Hohn offers a rich social history of this German-American encounter and provides new insights into how West Germans negotiated their transition from National Socialism to a consumer democracy during the 1950s. Focusing on the conservative reaction to the American military presence, Hohn shows that Germany's Christian Democrats, though eager to be allied politically and militarily with the United States, were appalled by the apparent Americanization of daily life and the decline in morality that accompanied the troops to the provinces. Conservatives condemned the jazz clubs and striptease parlors that Holocaust survivors from Eastern Europe opened to cater to the troops, and they expressed scorn toward the German women who eagerly pursued white and black American GIs. While most Germans rejected the conservative effort to punish as prostitutes all women who associated with American GIs, they vilified the sexual relationships between African American men and German women. Hohn demonstrates that German anxieties over widespread Americanization were always debates about proper gender norms and racial boundaries, and that while the American military brought democracy with them to Germany, it also brought Jim Crow.
