    Abstract: The New Middle East is one of the first comprehensive books to critically examine the Arab popular uprisings of 2011–12. While these uprisings prompted a number of cursory publications, this volume contains meticulous and thoughtful reflections on the causes, drivers and effects of these seminal events on the internal, regional and international politics of the Middle East and North Africa. Although specific conditions in individual countries that have experienced large-scale popular mobilizations are investigated, they are neither treated in isolation nor separated from broader developments in the region. Instead, the authors highlight connections between individual case studies and systemic conditions throughout the Arab arena. These include the crisis of political authority, the failure of economic development and new genres of mobilization and activism, especially communication technology and youth movements. The careful analysis and reflection on the prospects for democratic change in the region ensures the book will have both an immediate and enduring appeal

Banu Bargu's attempt to approach the 'death fast' or 'weaponization of body' as politically motivated forms of resistance opens up interesting and innovative spaces for us to rethink the concepts of sovereignty, power, politics, and resistance. Laleh Khalili, SOAS, University of London, author of Time in the Shadows: Confinement in Counterinsurgencies:This extraordinary book movingly and effectively describes and analyzes the history of the death fast movement in the early years of the twenty-first century in Turkey. It is a treasure trove of material, both empirical and theoretical, making it at once a wonderful (though grim) account and a thoughtful reflection on what prisons do and how they do it, as well as what forms of resistance are effective or even possible when and where. Allen Feldman, New York University, author of Formations of Violence: The Narrative of the Body and Political Terror in Northern Ireland:Starve and Immolate interweaves a sensitive ethnography of disembodiment and deft political theory to lucidly reconstruct the constitutive antagonisms of Turkish political culture as archived in prison hunger strikes.     Abstract: Starve and Immolate tells the story of leftist political prisoners in Turkey who waged a deadly struggle against the introduction of high security prisons by forging their lives into weapons. Weaving together contemporary and critical political theory with political ethnography, Banu Bargu analyzes the death fast struggle as an exemplary though not exceptional instance of self-destructive practices that are a consequence of, retort to, and refusal of the increasingly biopolitical forms of sovereign power deployed around the globe.Bargu chronicles the experiences, rituals, values, beliefs, ideological self-representations, and contentions of the protestors who fought cellular confinement against the background of the history of Turkish democracy and the treatment of dissent in a country where prisons have become sites of political confrontation. A critical response to Michel Foucault's Discipline and Punish, Starve and Immolate centers on new forms of struggle that arise from the asymmetric antagonism between the state and its contestants in the contemporary prison. Bargu ultimately positions the weaponization of life as a bleak, violent, and ambivalent form of insurgent politics that seeks to wrench the power of life and death away from the modern state on corporeal grounds and in increasingly theologized forms.     Abstract: Toby Matthiesen traces the politics of the Shia in the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia from the nineteenth century until the present day. This book outlines the difficult experiences of being Shia in a Wahhabi state, and casts new light on how the Shia have mobilised politically to change their position. Shia petitioned the rulers, joined secular opposition parties and founded Islamist movements. Most Saudi Shia opposition activists profited from an amnesty in 1993 and subsequently found a place in civil society and the public sphere. However, since 2011 a new Shia protest movement has again challenged the state. The Other Saudis shows how exclusionary state practices created an internal Other and how sectarian discrimination has strengthened Shia communal identities. The book is based on little-known Arabic sources, extensive fieldwork in Saudi Arabia and interviews with key activists.     Abstract: Gegenwärtige politische und wissenschaftliche Diskussionen um Antisemitismus in politischen Parteien fokussieren vor allem auf die Ränder des politischen Spektrums. Aus der Perspektive der Antisemitismusforschung stellt sich die Frage, inwiefern diese Wahrnehmung mit der Wirklichkeit korrespondiert. Zentrale Fragen sind unter anderem, wie sich der Antisemitismus in den unterschiedlichen politischen Parteien der Bundesrepublik artikuliert, inwiefern Unterschiede zwischen den antisemitischen Äußerungen in den einzelnen Parteien feststellbar sind, wie Parteien reagieren, wenn sich einzelne Mitglieder antisemitisch äußern, und welche Sanktionsmechanismen es gibt.     Abstract: This book is a historical study of the Tajiks in Central Asia from the ancient times to the post-Soviet period. For millennia, these descendants of the original Aryan settlers were part of many different empires set up by Greek, Arab, Turkic and Russian invaders, as well as their own, most notably during the Middle Ages. The emergence of the modern state of Tajikistan began after 1917 under Soviet rule, and culminated in the promulgation of independence from the moribund USSR in 1991. In the subsequent civil war that raged between 1992 and 1997, Tajikistan came close to becoming a failed state. The legacy of that internal conflict remains critical to understanding politics in Tajikistan a generation later. Exploring the patterns of ethnic identity and the exigencies of state formation, the book argues that despite a strong sense of belonging underpinned by shared history, mythology and cultural traits, the Tajiks have not succeeded in forming a consolidated nation. The politics of the Russian colonial administration, the national-territorial delimitation under Stalin, and the Soviet strategy of socio-economic modernisation contributed to the preservation and reification of sub-ethnic cleavages and regional identities. The book demonstrates the impact of region-based elite clans on Tajikistan’s political trajectory in the twilight years of the Soviet era, and identifies objective and subjective factors that led to the civil war. It concludes with a survey of the process of national reconciliation after 1997, and the formal and informal political actors, including Islamist groups, who compete for influence in Tajik society

    Abstract: The book is part of the 5-volume series “German Social Policy”, a unique multidisciplinary approach to the history of German social policy written by the doyens of their respective disciplines. The volumes expound the contribution of the German tradition to the rise of social policy in the Western world in the 19th and 20th centuries. Hegel’s disciple Lorenz von Stein saw social policy as a means to pacify the capitalist class conflict. After World War II, social policy expanded in an unprecedented way, changing its character in the process. Social policy turned from class politics into a policy for the whole population, with new concepts - like "social security", "redistribution" and "quality of life" - and new overarching formulas, "social market economy" and "social state" (the German version of “welfare state”). Both formulas have remained indeterminate and contested, indicating the inherent openness of the idea of the “social”

The author, formerly director at the Max-Planck-Institute for European Legal History, Frankfurt, provides a perceptive overview of the history of social security and social welfare in Germany from early modern times to the end of World War II, including Bismarck’s pioneering introduction of social insurance in the 1880s. The author unravels “layers” of social security that have piled up in the course of history and, so he argues, still linger in the present-day welfare state. The account begins with the first efforts by public authorities to regulate poverty and then proceeds to the “social question” that arose during the 19th-century Industrial Revolution. World War I had a major impact on the development of social security, both during the war and after, through the exigencies of the war economy, inflation and unemployment. The ruptures as well as the continuities of social policy under National Socialism and World War II are also investigated.

He concludes that the GDR was unable to cope with the trade-off between ambitious social policy goals and a deteriorating economic performance. Ritter embeds his analysis of the Social Union in a general study of German unification, its international circumstances and its domestic repercussions (1989-1994). He argues that social policy played a pivotal role in German unification, and that there was no alternative to extending the West German welfare state to the East. Comparing Britain, Sweden, France and Germany, Kaufmann highlights the „idiosyncrasy” of each welfare state: countries are compared with regard to their state traditions and the relationship between state and civil society; their national “social questions”; their economic systems, including the unions and labour law; social security and redistribution; and their personal social services and education.     Abstract: India produces an impressive number of films each year in a variety of languages. Here, Monika Mehta breaks new ground by analyzing Hindi films and exploring the censorship of gender and heterosexuality in Bombay cinema. She studies how film censorship on various levels makes the female body and female sexuality pivotal in constructing national identity, not just through the films themselves but also through the heated debates that occur in newspapers and other periodicals. The standard claim is that the state dictates censorship and various prohibitions, but Mehta explores how relationships among the state, the film industry, and the public illuminate censorship's role in identity formation, while also examining how desire, profits, and corruption are generated through the act of censoring. Committed to extending a feminist critique of mass culture in the global south, Mehta situates the story of censorship in a broad social context and traces the intriguing ways in which the heated debates on sexuality in Bombay cinema actually produce the very forms of sexuality they claim to regulate. She imagines afresh the theoretical field of censorship by combining textual analysis, archival research, and qualitative fieldwork. Her analysis reveals how central concepts of film studies, such as stardom, spectacle, genre, and sound, are employed and (re)configured within the ambit of state censorship, thereby expanding the scope of their application and impact

Historian David Gerber begins by examining the many legal efforts to curb immigration and to define who is and is not an American, ranging from the Naturalization Law of 1795 (which applied only to "free-born white persons") to the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882, the Emergency Quota Act of 1921, and the reform-minded Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965, which opened the door to millions of newcomers, the vast majority from Asia and Latin America. The book also looks at immigration from the perspective of the migrant--farmers and industrial workers, mechanics and domestics, highly trained professionals and small-business owners--who willingly pulled up stakes for the promise of a better life. Throughout, the book sheds light on the relationships between race and ethnicity in the life of these groups and in the formation of American society, and it stresses the marked continuities across waves of immigration and across different racial and ethnic groups. A fascinating and even-handed historical account, this book puts into perspective the longer history of calls for stronger immigration laws and the on-going debates over the place of immigrants in American society..

    Abstract: Die europäische Integration stellt eine historisch präzedenzlose und neuartige Form der friedlichen Vereinigung eines Kontinents dar. Die Geschichtswissenschaft benötigt daher innovative theoretische Konzepte, um diesen Prozess angemessen erklären zu können - zum gegenwärtigen Zeitpunkt ist die Integrationsgeschichte jedoch durch ein weitgehendes "Theoriedefizit" geprägt. Das Buchprojekt "Acht Geschichten über die Integrationsgeschichte. Zur Grundlegung der Geschichte der europäischen Integration als ein episodisches historiographisches Erzählen" nimmt diesen Befund kritisch auf und leuchtet die theoretischen Grundlagen der Integrationshistoriographie aus. In interdisziplinärer Perspektive wird ein Vorschlag zur theoretischen Grundlegung der Vereinigungshistoriographie erarbeitet. Das Konzept eines episodischen historiographischen Erzählens (Peter Pichler) begreift die Einigung Europas als einen umfassenden Kooperations- und Transformationsprozess. In diesem Prozess greifen verschiedenste geschichtliche Teilstränge (etwa politische, wirtschaftliche, kulturelle, soziale, rechtliche, religiöse usw.) netzwerkartig ineinander. Im historiographischen Text ist deren Gesamtes daher am sinnvollsten als ein episodisches historiographisches Netzwerk zu repräsentieren. Dieser Theorievorschlag soll als neue Metaperspektive und methodisches Arbeitsinstrument zu Verfügung gestellt werden.Ein erster Arbeitsschritt unterzieht die bisherige Forschung zur Integrationsgeschichte einer kritischen Bestandsaufnahme und Diskursanalyse. Besonderes Augenmerk liegt darauf, auch ost- und südosteuropäische sowie türkische Perspektiven miteinzubeziehen. In der Synopsis zeigt sich das Zusammenspiel von ost- und südosteuropäischem "transition"-Narrativ sowie der türkischen Perspektive auf den Integrationsprozess als Motor der Debatte. Weiters stellen "postmoderne" Perspektiven auf die Integrationsgeschichte ein wichtiges Element der Beschleunigung und Erneuerung des Diskurses dar. Der erste Arbeitsschritt endet damit, einen ersten Innovationsimpuls zur diskursiven Erneuerung der integrationsgeschichtlichen Forschung geben zu können: Der neu eingeführte Begriff der "transnarrativen Kompetenz" ermöglicht es, "transition"-Narrativ und türkische Integrationsperspektiven aufeinander zu beziehen.In einem zweiten Arbeitsschritt werden aus der jüngsten Entwicklung in Integrations- und Geschichtstheorie jene theoretischen Elemente isoliert, die zu einer perspektivische ...
    Abstract: European integration represents a historically unprecedented and new form of a continent's peaceful unification. Therefore, historiography needs innovative theoretical concepts to illustrate this process appropriately; at the present moment, however, integration history is only characterized by an extensive 'theoretical deficit'. The book project 'Acht Geschichten über die Integrationsgeschichte. Zur Grundlegung der Geschichte der europäischen Integration als ein episodisches historiographisches Erzählen' critically adopts this opinion and illuminates the theoretical principles of integration historiography. A proposal regarding the theoretical principles of unification historiography is compiled from an interdisciplinary perspective. The concept of the episodic historiographic narrative (Peter Pichler) understands the unification of Europe as a comprehensive cooperation and transformation process in which various historic strands (e.g. political, economic, cultural, social, legal, religious, etc.) interlink with each other. Therefore it would be most sensible to show their totality as an episodic historiographic network within the historiographic context. This theoretical proposal shall be provided for research as a new meta-perspective and methodical tool.In a first step, the hitherto existing research on integration history is critically reviewed. Furthermore, its discourse will be analysed. Particular attention is paid to include Eastern and Southern European as well as Turkish perspectives. Their synopsis shows the interplay between the Eastern and Southern European 'transition'-narrative and the Turkish perspective on the integration process as the driving force of the debate. Furthermore, 'post-modern' perspectives on integration history represent an important feature of the discourse's acceleration and renewal. The first step ends with the contributors being able to give a first innovative impulse to the discursive renewal of research concerning integration history; the neoterised term 'transnarrative competence' allows for correlation between 'transition'-narrative and Turkish perspectives on integration. In a second step, those theoretical features from recent developments in integration and historical theory are isolated that can contribute to a perspective renewal of research.     Abstract: It was the era of the Raj, and yet the native communities had an unexpected role in the transformation of the urban fabric of British Bombay from 1854 to 1918. This book demonstrates how British Bombay was a collaboration of the colonial government and the Indian and European mercantile and industrial elite who shaped the city to serve their combined interests. It shows how the European and Indian engineers, architects, and artists worked with each other to design a city - its infrastructure, architecture, public sculpture - that was literally constructed by Indian labourers and craftsmen.

    Abstract: Japan is currently the only advanced industrial democracy with a fourth-generation immigrant problem. As other industrialized countries face the challenges of incorporating post-war immigrants, Japan continues to struggle with the incorporation of pre-war immigrants and their descendants. Whereas others have focused on international norms, domestic institutions, and recent immigration, this book argues that contemporary immigration and citizenship politics in Japan reflect the strategic interaction between state efforts to control immigration and grassroots movements by multi-generational Korean resident activists to gain rights and recognition specifically as permanently settled foreign residents of Japan. Based on in-depth interviews and fieldwork conducted in Tokyo, Kawasaki, and Osaka, this book aims to further our understanding of democratic inclusion in Japan by analyzing how those who are formally excluded from the political process voice their interests and what factors contribute to the effective representation of those interests in public debate and policy

Show synopsis This exploration of the role of violence in the history of Islamic societies considers the subject particularly in the context of its implementation as a political strategy to claim power over the public sphere. Violence, both among Muslims and between Muslims and non-Muslims, has been the object of research in the past, as in the case of jihad, martyrdom, rebellion or criminal law. This book goes beyond these concerns in addressing, in a comprehensive and cross-disciplinary fashion, how violence has functioned as a basic principle of Islamic social and political organization in a variety of historical and geographical contexts. Contributions trace the use of violence by governments in the history of Islam, shed light on legal views of violence, and discuss artistic and religious responses. Authors lay out a spectrum of attitudes rather than trying to define an Islamic doctrine of violence. Bringing together some of the most substantive and innovative scholarship on this important topic to date, this volume contributes to the growing interest, both scholarly and general, in the question of Muslim attitudes toward violence

Sie analysieren dabei einerseits den Einfluss der populären Kultur auf die Selbstdarstellung und Vermittlungsformen der Politik. Andererseits wird untersucht, wie politische Botschaften, Weltdeutungen und Sinnstiftungsangebote über alltägliche Praxen und populäre Unterhaltungsangebote kreiert und vermittelt werden
