In ihrem neuen Buch geht Butler der Frage nach, wie eine Kritik am Zionismus aus dem Judentum selbst heraus möglich, ja ethisch sogar zwingend ist. In einer eindringlichen Auseinandersetzung mit Hannah Arendt, Emmanuel Lévinas, Walter Benjamin, Primo Levi und den Palästinensern Edward Said und Mahmoud Darwish entwickelt sie eine neue jüdische Ethik, die sich gegen die von Israel ausgeübte und vom Zionismus legitimierte staatliche Gewalt sowie Israels koloniale Unterdrückung von Bevölkerungsgruppen wendet. Diese Ethik steht ein für die Rechte der Unterdrückten, für die Anerkennung des Anderen und die Infragestellung der jüdischen Souveränität als alleinigem Bezugsrahmen der israelischen Staatsraison. Aus der Erfahrung von Diaspora und Pluralität heraus plädiert Butler für einen Staat, in dem Israelis und Palästinenser, Juden und Nichtjuden gleichberechtigt zusammenleben.     Abstract: This book examines the exercise of power in the Stalinist music world as well as the ways in which composers and ordinary people responded to it. It presents a comparative inquiry into the relationship between music and politics in the German Democratic Republic and Poland from the aftermath of World War II through Stalin's death in 1953, concluding with the slow process of de-Stalinization in the mid-to late-1950s. The author explores how the Communist parties in both countries expressed their attitudes to music of all kinds, and how composers, performers, and audiences cooperated with, resisted, and negotiated these suggestions and demands. Based on a deep analysis of the archival and contemporary published sources on state, party, and professional organizations concerned with musical life, Tompkins argues that music, as a significant part of cultural production in these countries, played a key role in instituting and maintaining the regimes of East Central Europe. As part of the Stalinist project to create and control a new socialist identity at the personal as well as collective level, the ruling parties in East Germany and Poland sought to saturate public space through the production of music. Politically effective ideas and symbols were introduced that furthered their attempts to, in the parlance of the day, "engineer the human soul." Music also helped the Communist parties establish legitimacy. Extensive state support for musical life encouraged musical elites and audiences to accept the dominant position and political missions of these regimes. Party leaders invested considerable resources in the attempt to create an authorized musical language that would secure and maintain hegemony over the cultural and wider social worlds. The responses of composers and audiences ran the gamut from enthusiasm to suspicion, but indifference was not an option

So it should be of no surprise that America's Jews have devoted themselves to civic engagement and the democratic process. From before the Revolutionary War to the early twenty-first century, when America saw the first Jewish vice presidential nominee of a major party and the first Jewish Speaker of the House of Representatives, the Jewish community has always devoted itself to public service, issue advocacy, and involvement in politics and government at every level. While strong support for the safety and security of the state of Israel has been a hallmark of US foreign policy since Israel's founding, it is by no means the only policy area in which American Jews are involved. Nor are American Jews monolithic in their politics. Although the Jewish community has become a reliable part of the Democratic Party's base in most partisan elections, American Jews represent a wide range of ideologies on most economic and foreign policy matters. In addition to becoming leaders in business and labor, in academia and in philanthropy, Jewish Americans have always helped shape the discussion over the issues that form the country's future. In this volume, a mix of professors, graduate students, and lay people in the field of politics with a breadth of experience debate some central questions: Is Israel still the most important policy concern for American Jews? Why does the Jewish community vote Democratic in such overwhelming numbers? Can American Jews balance economic, security and human rights concerns in a rapidly changing international community? In 20 Länderstudien loten die Autoren aus, wie historische Traditionen, religiöse Prägungen und politische Ordnungen sich auf die Erinnerungsmuster des neuzeitlichen Gefallenenkults auswirken. Trotz vieler Unterschiede zwischen den einzelnen Ländern treten zwei Gemeinsamkeiten klar hervor: Alle Gefallenen werden politisch in Dienst genommen, um das eigene Staatswesen mit dem Tod der Soldaten zu legitimieren. Zugleich individualisiert sich in allen Nationalstaaten das Gefallenengedenken, das jeden Soldaten einzeln mit seinem Namen und als gleichberechtigten Teil der Nation darstellt. Nur religiöse und revolutionäre Märtyrerkulte sperren sich gegen diese Egalisierungstendenz.

    Abstract: This book is a historical study of the Tajiks in Central Asia from the ancient times to the post-Soviet period. For millennia, these descendants of the original Aryan settlers were part of many different empires set up by Greek, Arab, Turkic and Russian invaders, as well as their own, most notably during the Middle Ages. The emergence of the modern state of Tajikistan began after 1917 under Soviet rule, and culminated in the promulgation of independence from the moribund USSR in 1991. In the subsequent civil war that raged between 1992 and 1997, Tajikistan came close to becoming a failed state. The legacy of that internal conflict remains critical to understanding politics in Tajikistan a generation later. Exploring the patterns of ethnic identity and the exigencies of state formation, the book argues that despite a strong sense of belonging underpinned by shared history, mythology and cultural traits, the Tajiks have not succeeded in forming a consolidated nation. The politics of the Russian colonial administration, the national-territorial delimitation under Stalin, and the Soviet strategy of socio-economic modernisation contributed to the preservation and reification of sub-ethnic cleavages and regional identities. The book demonstrates the impact of region-based elite clans on Tajikistan’s political trajectory in the twilight years of the Soviet era, and identifies objective and subjective factors that led to the civil war. It concludes with a survey of the process of national reconciliation after 1997, and the formal and informal political actors, including Islamist groups, who compete for influence in Tajik society

    Abstract: Die ‚Integrationsdebatte‘ nach Thilo Sarrazins Buch ‚Deutschland schafft sich ab‘ offenbarte ein Paradox – eine wachsende Akzeptanz des kulturellen Pluralismus, besonders unter jüngeren Menschen, und zugleich massive kulturelle Ressentiments in der Einwanderungsgesellschaft. Der renommierte Migrationsforscher und Politikberater Klaus J. Bade beleuchtet Ursachen, Hintergründe und bedrohliche Folgen dieser paradoxen Spannung. Ihr Ergebnis ist eine gefährliche Ersatzdebatte anstelle der verdrängten Diskussion um die neue Identität in der Einwanderungsgesellschaft. Das Buch beschreibt diese Ersatzdebatte als ‚negative Integration‘: die Selbstvergewisserung der Mehrheit durch die Ausgrenzung einer großen – muslimischen – Minderheit. Die Politik verkennt die Brisanz dieser negativen Integration, solange sie ‚Integrationspolitik‘ nicht als Gesellschaftspolitik für alle versteht. Mit scharfem Blick identifiziert Bade Zusammenhänge von Wortgewalt und Tatgewalt am Beispiel antimultikulturell und antiislamisch motivierter Bluttaten aus jüngster Zeit: dem Breivik-Massaker in Norwegen und den Serienmorden des Nationalsozialistischen Untergrunds (NSU) in Deutschland. Mit der Zunahme von Integrationserfolgen und der pragmatischen Akzeptanz kultureller Vielfalt sind in Deutschland auch aus kultureller Angst geborene fremdenfeindliche Abwehrhaltungen gewachsen, vor allem gegenüber dem Schreckgespenst Islam. Im Umgang mit den Themen Einwanderung, Integration und Islam ist ein kritischer Punkt erreicht.
