    Abstract: Esta tesis se centra en los procesos de construcción socio-cognitiva de las identidades de género, más concretamente de las mujeres, desde la particularidad concreta del caso español entre 1975 y 1995. Para ello se parte de una revisión de las herramientas conceptuales con las que se han venido analizando las identidades y el género con el objetivo de reconstruir un entramado teórico-conceptual lo suficientemente fino como para aprehender la complejidad de esos procesos de construcción identitaria desde la transición política española hasta finales del siglo XX y, en el plano más teorético, para reajustar unas lentes modernas que el cronotopo tardo-moderno está desbordando. La revisitación crítica de algunos de los hitos en la teorización de las identidades, del género y de los procesos de representación ontopolítica desde la sociología y /o la crítica feminista cuaja en propuestas híbridas, que se alimentan también de las teorías del actor red y de la semiótica, relativas a cómo pensar y aprehender los procesos de construcción identitaria ligados a los cuerpos sexados. Todo ello se pone en juego en un caso que se reconstruye, en una apuesta metodológica también híbrida y polifónica, mediante la explotación de datos cuantitativos y cualitativos de fuentes que se multiplican y entrelazan conformando campos de fuerzas cambiantes, desde el movimiento feminista, el feminismo académico o las instituciones públicas creadas ad hoc, a las ciencias biomédicas, el derecho o la estadística. Si el recurso a las identidades sirve para repensar los presupuestos de las aproximaciones al género, el recurso al género se desvela como una fuente privilegiada para repensar las identidades en la tardo-modernidad, al tiempo que subraya la complejidad inherente a todo proceso de representación en tanto que operador central en la construcción tanto del orden moderno y sus dicotomías como los del desafiante cronotopo tardomoderno

    Abstract: Abstract: Im Rahmen von kritischen Anmerkungen zu einem Beitrag von U. L. Fischer, C. Großer und S. Liebermann über den Einfluss der deutschen Wiedervereinigung auf die subjektiven erwerbsbezogenen Deutungsmuster Ostdeutscher (im gleichen Heft) wird eine Reihe von Einwänden gegen implizite Unterstellungen und zentrale Argumentationen vorgebracht. Fischer und Mitarbeiter können belegen, dass sich entgegen der modernisierungstheoretisch zu erwartenden Flexibilisierung der Subjekte empirisch die subkjektiven Deutungsmuster und Handlungsroutinen nicht verändert haben. Dass dies für erstaunlich gehalten wird, wird allerdings auf eine Reihe theoretischer Missverständnisse der Moderne und der Sozialisation sowie auf die Verkennung konstanter und weniger flexibilitätsfördernder Anforderungen im System von Erwerbsarbeit zurückgeführt. Die unterstellte Beharrlichkeit der Deutungsmuster eines exemplarischen Falls wird zudem in generalisierender Weise den zum Teil einseitig interpretierten realsozialist

    Abstract: Abstract: "Neuere wissenschaftliche Untersuchungen stimmen darin überein, dass einseitige Leitbilder heute nicht mehr zutreffen. Angestrebt werden Leitbilder, die sich an Beruf und Familie orientieren. Grundlage dafür ist die Partnerschaft. Wenn sich Lebensplanung oder Verhaltenseinstellungen eines Partners ändern, muss der andere Teil mitziehen, sonst kann es sich nicht zum Ganzen fügen. Obwohl dies seit einiger Zeit bekannt ist und immer mehr Männer bereit sind, sich von traditionellen Rollenbildern zu befreien, geht es nicht wirklich voran. Was sind die Ursachen? Mit der vorliegenden Publikation analysieren die Autoren mögliche Gründe. Offenbar stehen der Gleichberechtigung nicht nur strukturelle, gesetzliche oder gar ideologische Hindernisse entgegen. Es gibt auch andere 'weiche' Faktoren, zum Beispiel das Verharren von Frauen in alten Rollenklischees, die das Zusammenleben maßgeblich beeinflussen." (Textauszug)

    Abstract: With the outbreak of the Korean War, the poor, rural West German state of Rhineland-Palatinate became home to some of the largest American military installations outside the United States. In GIs and Frauleins, Maria Hohn offers a rich social history of this German-American encounter and provides new insights into how West Germans negotiated their transition from National Socialism to a consumer democracy during the 1950s. Focusing on the conservative reaction to the American military presence, Hohn shows that Germany's Christian Democrats, though eager to be allied politically and militarily with the United States, were appalled by the apparent Americanization of daily life and the decline in morality that accompanied the troops to the provinces. Conservatives condemned the jazz clubs and striptease parlors that Holocaust survivors from Eastern Europe opened to cater to the troops, and they expressed scorn toward the German women who eagerly pursued white and black American GIs. While most Germans rejected the conservative effort to punish as prostitutes all women who associated with American GIs, they vilified the sexual relationships between African American men and German women. Hohn demonstrates that German anxieties over widespread Americanization were always debates about proper gender norms and racial boundaries, and that while the American military brought democracy with them to Germany, it also brought Jim Crow.

    Abstract: In many parts of South-East Asia, women's lifestyles are going through enormous changes as women move from traditional rural, agricultural lifestyles to modern, urban lifestyles, which often involve migration to cities, taking on paid work, and having a quite different relationship with their families. This book, based on intensive research among the women of the Bidayuh people in Sarawak, all of them first generation migrant wage workers, explores the extent to which women's lifestyles are changing, and the reasons which prompt women to make the changes. How far are such women driven by economic considerations, how far by dissatisfaction with traditional lifestyles, and how far by the appeal of a glamorous urban lifestyle? The author's research includes detailed interviews in the field, and much of this interview material is included in the book, thereby enabling the Bidayuh women to tell their own stories as they grapple with the rapid changes swirling around them.

Upper-class women frequently circumvented the onerous limitations of the law, while middle-class women sought through reform to change their legal status. For working-class women, such legal changes were irrelevant, but they too found ways to ameliorate their position.     Abstract: Indonesia now has its first woman President -- Megawati Sukarnoputri. The debates surrounding her elevation to the presidency brought issues of gender and politics to the forefront of the public agenda, raising crucial questions about the role that women are to play in public life in post-Soeharo Indonesia. The struggle to achieve a democratic transition following the fall of Soeharto's New Order in 1998 has also focused attention on issues of equity and gender justice. This book explores gender relations in Indonesia and presents an overview of the political, social, cultural and economic situation of women. The volume is Indonesia Assessment 2001, a result of the annual Indonesia Update conference organized by the Indoneisa Project and the Department of Political and Social Change at the Research School of Pacific and Asian Studies, ANU.

    Abstract: In November 1918, German women gained the right to vote, and female suffrage would forever change the landscape of German political life. Women now constituted the majority of voters, and political parties were forced to address them as political actors for the first time. Analyzing written and visual propaganda aimed at, and frequently produced by, women across the political spectrum--including the Communists and Social Democrats; liberal, Catholic, and conservative parties; and the Nazis--Julia Sneeringer shows how various groups struggled to reconcile traditional assumptions about women's interests with the changing face of the family and female economic activity. Through propaganda, political parties addressed themes such as motherhood, fashion, religion, and abortion. But as Sneeringer demonstrates, their efforts to win women's votes by emphasizing "women's issues" had only limited success. The debates about women in propaganda were symptomatic of larger anxieties that gripped Germany during this era of unrest, Sneeringer says. Though Weimar political culture was ahead of its time in forcing even the enemies of women's rights to concede a public role for women, this horizon of possibility narrowed sharply in the face of political instability, economic crises, and the growing specter of fascism.

    Abstract: This book, originally published in 2002, argues that the Mongol invasion of the thirteenth century precipitated a transformation of marriage and property law in China that deprived women of their property rights and reduced their legal and economic autonomy. It describes how after a period during which women's property rights were steadily improving, and laws and practices affecting marriage and property were moving away from Confucian ideals, the Mongol occupation created a new constellation of property and gender relations that persisted to the end of the imperial era. It shows how the Mongol-Yüan rule in China ironically created the conditions for radical changes in the law, which for the first time brought it into line with the goals of Learning the Way Confucians and which curtailed women's financial and personal autonomy. The book evaluates the Mongol invasion and its influence on Chinese law and society

    Abstract: An examination of the interaction between ideology and experience in the lives of English women during a period of great social and intellectual change. Focusing on the complex relationship between discourse and experience, 'Women of Quality' examines the role of gender in aristocratic women's daily lives during a period of significant cultural change. In the years following the Glorious Revolution, didactic writers and other social critics responded to a perceived crisis of gender relations by creating a new discourse of 'natural' feminine behavior in opposition to the luxury and decadence of fashionable women. Modern scholars have often portrayed this agenda as representing the rise of a middle-class ideology, but Ingrid Tague argues that the new rhetoric held enormous appeal for those women who would appear to be its greatest targets: wealthy, fashionable 'women of quality'. Using the correspondence and diaries of these women, Tague traces the ways in which they adopted, adapted, and exploited ideals of femininity. In their hands, feminine values could become powerful tools that enabled them to compete for status and reputation. Ironically, by identifying femininity with private, trivial concerns, these ideals created unique opportunities for elite women. Female participation in informal social and political activities placed women at the heart of aristocratic power in the early eighteenth century, even as they employed the language of wifely subordination and domesticity.     Abstract: Afghan women have faced an exhaustive struggle in the battle to change their status and improve their situation. Emadi takes a long look at the role of development and modernization policies implemented by the state in the pre- and post-Soviet eras, under the Taliban, and beyond. He finds that such policies have failed to bring about much- needed change and improvement for women. Modernization strategies benefited only a small segment of urban women and left the plight of rural women unchanged. Although a small segment of middle- and upper-class women organized themselves and fought to bring about changes in their status and to end gender inequality, their efforts alone did not meet with much success

    Abstract: In November 1918, German women gained the right to vote, and female suffrage would forever change the landscape of German political life. Women now constituted the majority of voters, and political parties were forced to address them as political actors for the first time. Analyzing written and visual propaganda aimed at, and frequently produced by, women across the political spectrum--including the Communists and Social Democrats; liberal, Catholic, and conservative parties; and the Nazis--Julia Sneeringer shows how various groups struggled to reconcile traditional assumptions about women's interests with the changing face of the family and female economic activity. Through propaganda, political parties addressed themes such as motherhood, fashion, religion, and abortion. But as Sneeringer demonstrates, their efforts to win women's votes by emphasizing "women's issues" had only limited success. The debates about women in propaganda were symptomatic of larger anxieties that gripped Germany during this era of unrest, Sneeringer says. Though Weimar political culture was ahead of its time in forcing even the enemies of women's rights to concede a public role for women, this horizon of possibility narrowed sharply in the face of political instability, economic crises, and the growing specter of fascism

    Abstract: "This anthology presents twenty diary excerpts written between 1830 and 1996, reflecting the upper-class travails of nineteenth-century travellers and settlers as well as the workaday struggles and triumphs of twentieth-century students, teachers, housewives, and writers. The diarists are single, married, with children and without, and range in age from fourteen to ninety years old." "The excerpts - each preceded by a biographical sketch of the diarist - make compelling reading. Elsie Rogstad Jones endures the sudden death of her baby in 1943; Constance Kerr Sissons, writing in 1900, discovers that her husband already has a Metis wife à la facon du pays'; and Dorothy Duncan MacLennan ruminates on her married life with Hugh MacLennan in 1950s Montreal. Writers Marian Engel, Edna Staebler, and Dorothy Choate Herriman contemplate the creative process. Two diarists, Phoebe McInnes and Sophie Alice Puckette, writing in the first decade of the twentieth century, reveal the contradictions and difficulties of their lives as unmarried schoolteachers. In an excerpt from a diary written in 1843, Sarah Welch Hill, a newly arrived settler, describes her violent marriage in what must be one of the few nineteenth-century documents describing domestic abuse in the first person."
