Abstract: "This anthology reconsiders the social, political and intellectual meanings of multiculturalism in the West, particularly in Britain. In introducing a new conceptual language for thinking about it, the volume stresses the importance of distinguishing between the multicultural as a signifier of the unsettled meanings of cultural differences, and multiculturalism as the signifier of attempts to 'fix' their meaning in national imaginaries. The book also casts the debates about multiculturalism in the contexts of globalization, post-colonialism and what Barnor Hesse calls 'multicultural transruptions' - which he sees as resurgent, irrepressible multicultural issues which unsettle the racialized meanings of social norms and the cultural habits of national politics."--BOOK JACKET

Abstract: "Green political thought, feminism, the utopian canon and deconstruction meet in Utopian Bodies and the Politics of Transgression where they combine to form a new utopianism. This is transgressive utopianism, which, rather than blueprinting an ideal polity, creates new conceptual spaces for the exploration of alternative ways of being." "Here, bodies of thought meet bodies of people, and Britain's ecological, intentional communities are the starting place for a consideration of the roles of the public and the private, property, and relations of self and other. Together, Lucy Sargisson argues, these bodies address some of the most challenging dilemmas of contemporary political thought and life." "Utopian Bodies and the Politics of Transgression will be of interest to students and scholars of green political thought, feminist and utopian studies, as well as to philosophers and political theorists. People interested in intentional communities will find this an accessible introduction to some of their more radical implications."--Jacket

Abstract: Like many Jews of our generation, Jon Stratton grew up in a family more concerned about assimilation than about preserving Jewish tradition. While he could easily 'pass' among non-Jews, he found himself increasingly torn between his fear of not belonging and a deeply-felt commitment to his family's past. Coming Out Jewish examines the unique challenge of constructing an identity amid the clash between ethnicity and conformity. For many Jews, the idea of full assimilation ended with the Holocaust. But the pressure to adapt to the mainstream, Stratton eloquently argues, remains powerful, especially for those with anglicized names, assimilationist parents, a history of recent immigration, or ambivalent experiences of themselves as Jews. With reference to the work of Daniel Boyarin, Ien Ang, and Homi Bhabha, among others, Stratton offers fresh analysis on a wide range of topics, including the Jewish origins of pluralism in the US, anti-Semitism in Germany, the Jewishness of sitcoms like Seinfeld , and the Yiddishization of American culture since World War II. More than a book about Jews and Jewishness, Coming Out Jewish smartly and accurately mines the Jewish experience in the West to give voice to the issues of migration, Diaspora, assimilation and identity that affect those, displaced and 'othered', around the world

Abstract: Publisher description: John Urry argues that, if sociology is to make a pertinent contribution to the global era, it must abandon its original aim--the study of society as a set of institutions--and switch focus instead to the study of both physical and virtual movement. In considering this "sociology of mobilities" the book concerns itself with the travel of people, ideas, images, objects, messages, waste products and money across international borders, and the implications these mobilities have for the experiences of time, space, dwelling and citizenship. Sociology beyond societies extends recent debate about globalisation both by providing an analysis of how mobilities reconstitute social life in uneven and complex ways, and by arguing for the significance of objects, senses, time and space in the theorising of global processes

Abstract: Ethnographic fieldwork is traditionally seen as what distinguishes social and cultural anthropology from the other social sciences. This collection responds to the inte nsifying scrutiny of fieldwork in recent years. It challenges the idea of the necessity for the total immersion of the ethnographer in the field, and for the clear separation of professional and personal areas of activity. The very existence of 'the field' as an entity separate from everyday life is questioned. Fresh perspectives on contemporary fieldwork are provided by diverse case-studies from across North America and Europe. These contributions give a thorough appraisal of what fieldwork is and should be, and an extra dimension is added through fascinating accounts of the personal experiences of anthropologists in the field

Abstract: Hybridity and its Discontents explores the history and experience of 'hybridity' - the mixing of peoples and cultures - in North and South America, Latin America, Britain and Ireland, South Africa, Asia and the Pacific. The contributors trace manifestations of hybridity in debates about miscengenation and racial purity, in scientific notions of genetics and 'race', in processes of cultural translation, and in ideas of nation, community and belonging. The contributors begin by examining the persistence of anxieties about racial 'contamination', from nineteenth-century fears of miscegenation to more recent debates about mixed race relationships and parenting. Examining the lived experiences of children of 'mixed parentage', contributors ask why such fears still thrive in a supposedly tolerant culture? The contributors go on to discuss how science, while apparently neutral, is part of cultural discourses, which affect its constructions and classifications of gender and 'race'. The contributors examine how new cultural forms emerge from borrowings, exchanges and intersections across ethnic and cultural boundaries, and conclude by investigating the contemporary experience of multiculturalism in an age of contested national borders and identities

Abstract: "This book asks the controversial question of why millions of girls do not appear to be surviving to adulthood in contemporary Asia. In the first major study available of this sensitive and emotive issue, Elisabeth Croll investigates the extent of discrimination against female children in Asia and shifts the focus of attention firmly from son preference to daughter discrimination." "The book paints a vivid picture of daughter discrimination across Asia today, from excessive child mortality to the withholding of health care and education on the basis of gender. It argues that daughters still cannot substitute for sons and that the increasing availability of sex-identification technologies will serve only to supplement older forms of infanticide and neglect. Startlingly, it reveals that, in China, India and across East and South Asia, daughter discrimination is actually on the increase despite rising economic development, declining fertility and the generally improved status of women." "This compelling account of a phenomenon still hidden and unacknowledged across the world is essential reading for all those interested in gender and children in contemporary society."--Jacket

Abstract: Annotation, This collection reasserts the importance of kinship, and of studying kinship, within the framework of social anthropology. The contributors look at both the benefits and burdens of kinship across cultures, and examine how "relatedness" is inextricably linked with other concepts which define people's identity -- such as gender, power and history. The contributors look at constructions of heredity and relatedness in a wide range of areas, including Greenland, Turkey, Portugal and across South America. Taking a theoretically-informed approach, they examine contentious themes, such as the relationship of communal living to concepts of kinship, and differences between rural and urban conceptions of the family. This volume provides a long overdue, critical reappraisal of the place of familial relations within the contemporary world

Abstract: "What has happened to feminism over the last few decades? Is it any use as a 'politics for women' any more? Or has feminism lost its political edge and utility having changed beyond all recognition since the massive influence of postmodern and poststructural ideas? This book addresses these questions, and presents a valuable overview of the main forms of feminism at the heart of the traditional/contemporary or modernist/postmodernist debate." "In order to 'think the theories through practice', Zalewski uses the example of reproductive technologies (such as IVF, amniocentesis and ultrasound), which unexpectedly reveals some intriguing similarities between modernist and postmodernist feminisms and illustrates some of the beneficial legacies of the more traditional feminisms, casting doubt on claims that such feminisms are anachronistic." "Feminism after Postmodernism is an essential guide for all those working in gender studies and feminist theory."--Jacket

    Abstract: Annotation
Abstract: Home Territories examines how traditional ideas of home, homeland and nation have been destabilised both by new patterns of migration and by new communication technologies which routinely transgress the symbolic boundaries around both the private household and the nation state. David Morley analyses the varieties of exile, diaspora, displacement, connectedness, mobility experienced by members of social groups, and relates the micro structures of the home, the family and the domestic realm, to contemporary debates about the nation, community and cultural identities. He explores issues such as the role of gender in the construction of domesticity, and the conflation of ideas of maternity and home, and engages with recent debates about the 'territorialisation of culture'

Abstract: "For almost a thousand years language has been an important and contentious issue in Ireland. The story of the relations between the English and Irish languages is a complex one full of unexpected alliances, strange accounts of historical origins, and peculiar forms of cultural identity. Above all it reflects the great themes of Irish history: colonial invasion, native resistance, religious and cultural difference." "Collected here for the first time are texts on the politics of language from the date of the first legislation against Irish, the Statute of Kilkenny of 1366, to the constitution of the Free State in 1922. Crowley's introduction connects these texts to current debates, taking the Belfast Agreement as an example, and illustrates how the language debates continue to have historical resonance today. Divided into six historical sections with detailed introductions, this unique sourcebook includes familiar cultural texts such as Spenser's View of the Present State of Ireland and essays and letters by Yeats and Synge, alongside less familiar writings, from introductions to the first Irish-English and English-Irish dictionaries to the Preface to the New Testament in Irish (1602)." "Providing direct access to original texts, this is an historical resource book which can be used as a case study in the relations between language and cultural identity both in the present and the past."--Jacket

Abstract: Annotation From Melos to My Laipresents an erudite, provocative and moving analysis of the accounts of violence in the literature and history of ancient Greece and in the film literature and veterans' accounts of the Vietnam War. This comparative investigation examines the nature of violence, its impact on society and culture, especially as reflected from the perspective of the survivors. The survivors include not only actual combatants, but those with whom they interact: their comrades, their wives and children, families and society as a whole. From Melos to My Laiprovides a unique contribution to the study of the impact of violence on its participants and its audience which combines an examination of the artistic representations of violence and the real-life accounts of those involved in it

Abstract: In the first half of the nineteenth century the main employment open to young women in Britain was in teaching, dressmaking, textile manufacture and domestic service. After 1850, however, young women began to enter previously all-male areas like medicine, pharmacy, librarianship, the civil service, clerical work and hairdressing, or areas previously restricted to older women like nursing, retail work and primary school teaching. This book examines the reasons for this change.

Abstract: "Natural Enemies examines people-wildlife conflicts from a social anthropological perspective. The authors focus on the human dimension of these conflicts - an area often neglected by specialists in applied ecology and wildlife management - and on their social and political contexts. Case studies of specific conflicts are drawn from Africa, Asia, Europe and America, and feature an assortment of wild animals and birds, including chimpanzees, elephants, wild pigs, foxes, bears, wolves, pigeons and ducks." "Examining the symbolic, as well as material, dimensions of wildlife pestilence, anthropologists can reveal the cultural character of many of our 'natural enemies'. These reports from the 'front line' show that human conflict with wildlife is often an expression of conflict between people."--Jacket

Abstract: The evil prosthesis of Captain Hook, the comical speech of Porky Pig, and the bumbling antics of Mr. Magoo are all examples of images in our culture which can become the basis of negative attitudes and subliminal prejudice towards persons with disabilities. These attitudes influence and underlie discriminatory acts, resulting in negative treatment and segregation. A teacher's ability to recognize and counter such images may well determine the success of inclusion and mainstreaming programs in our schools and society. Well-researched and well-written, this book offers practical guidance as grou
