Abstract: Houses are not just assemblages of individual rooms but intricate patterns of organised space, governed by rules and conventions about the size and configuration of rooms, which domestic activities go together, how the interior should be decorated and furnished and what kinds of household object are appropriate in each setting, how family members relate to one another in different spaces, and how and where guests should be received and entertained in the home. Decoding Homes and Houses introduces new, computer-based techniques designed to retrieve and interpret this wealth of social and symbolic information. The various representations and measures show how domestic space provides a shared framework for everyday life, how social meanings are constructed in the home and how different sub-groups within society differentiate themselves through their patterns of domestic space and lifestyles

Abstract: The Pawnee are Native Americans who originally lived in what is now central Nebraska and central Kansas in the basins of the Platte and Republican rivers. The Pawnee spoke a Caddoan language. The focus is on the traditional way of life of the Pawnee. This file consists of 18 English language documents dealing primarily with traditional Pawnee ethnography for the period of 1850 to the 1920s. There is a slight focus in the file on materials dealing with the Skidi (Skiri) band of Pawnee. Probably the most comprehensive ethnographic information on the Pawnee as a whole is found in Weltfish, further supplemented with data from Smith, Grinnell, and the oral traditions described in Blaine. Major topics discussed in this file relate to culture history, ceremonialism, and religious beliefs. Other documents deal with more specific ethnographic topics such as music and songs; social organization; literature in the form of hero stories and folktales; and ethnoastronomy

Abstract: The Amhara people of the Ethiopian central highlands are one of the two largest ethnic groups in Ethiopia. This file includes fifteen documents, all but one based on research conducted in the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s. Overall, a more traditional, and rural Amhara culture is portrayed, except for Levine who also discusses modern changes in Amhara culture. Messing's work systematically covers a broad range of culture, circa 1950s, and is the basic source to be consulted. Included in Messing's book is an extensive glossary covering such categories as animals, cultigens, herbs, spirits, and charms. The other works compliment Messing by examining more specific aspects of Amhara culture, such as settlement patterns, political organization, ethnomedicine, land tenure and secretic religious beliefs and practices. Examples and discussions of Amhara representative arts, oral stories and literature are found in Young, Messing, and Assefa, respectively. It is evident that Amhara culture varies geographically, although no one study covers this variability. The post-Haile Selassie period (1975 to present) is not covered in the file

Abstract: The Klamath are Native Americans living in southwestern Oregon. This file consists of 11 documents. The focus of the literature is on tribal origins, traditional culture, social change, and mythology. The earliest by Gatschet is based on field work carried out in 1877 and includes information on geography, settlements, folklore, language, and mythology. Spier produced a "memory ethnography" based on informant recollections of ca. 1860 tribal life. He also compared Klamath cultural traits with those of neighboring groups in order to establish Klamath origins and affiliations. Stern wrote about the history, culture, and politics of the Klamath reservation and a study of Klamath myths and their narration. Barker also recorded Klamath mythology and life histories. Other articles in the file include studies of Klamath childhood and socialization (Pearsall), material culture (Barrett), personality and acculturation (Clifton and Levine), comparative religion (Spencer), and songs and their interpretation (Weaver)

Abstract: The Kanuri constitute the dominant element of the population of Borno state in northeastern Nigeria, and are also found in large numbers in southeastern Niger. This file on the Kanuri consists of 11 documents. The literature covers Kanuri only in Nigeria, is almost entirely by the anthropologist Ronald Cohen and dates from ca. 1950s-1970. Included are Cohen's monograph on the Kanuri, as well as his articles on sociopolitical organization, attempts to change agricultural practices, nineteenth century political economy, marriage instability, kingship, processes of political incorporation, and status distinctions and social stratification. Rosman writes on the relationship between acculturation and social structure among urban Kanuri. Peshkin writes about the affect of Western-style education on social change in rural and urban Borno. The file is strong on Kanuri social and political organization up to the 1960s, while it is less so on religion, arts and recent social change between 1970 and the 1990s

Keywords: Ganda (African people) ; Ganda ; Ganda
Abstract: The Ganda live in the province of Buganda in Uganda. This file consists of 28 documents with a time range from 1200 to 1991. The studies focus on Baganda history before British overrule (1200-1900), acculturation during the subsequent period of British administration (1901-1961), and various subjects in the contemporary period following independence in 1962. The file includes studies of the traditional system of authority and changes in the system that occurred after 1900. Other studies focus on post-1900 changes in land tenure, status, social mobility, and marriage. Two labor studies examine labor migration under the colonial administration and the assimilation of immigrant laborers in Buganda in the 1950s. Other postwar studies include examinations of political behavior and attitudes, changes in occupational structure, and the effect of the Baganda authority system on innovation and change. Post-Independence studies include an examination of ethnic categories of mental health, infant care and development, and the impact of microtechnologies on rural life

Keywords: Guarani Indians ; Guaraní ; Guaraní
Abstract: The Guaraní live in lowland South America. They are heterogeneous wide-ranging groups inhabiting sub-tropical regions from the Andes to the Atlantic Ocean. This file consists of 9 documents with a time span of coverage from approximately the fifteenth century to the early 1990s. The geographic focus of the file is rather diffuse ranging from southern Brazil, southern Mato Grosso, Paraguay, and the border areas of Argentina, Paraguay, and Brazil. The best general coverage of all Guaraní groups is that found in Métraux. Schaden's material concentrates on the Guaraní subgroups of Mbyá Ñandevá, and Kayová; Hanke and the Watsons focus their attention on the Cayua (Kaiowá). The specific location of the Watson's fieldwork centers on the village of Taquapir. The more recent studies by Clastres and Ganson deal primarily with the historical Guaraní population in Paraguay and the mission areas on the borders of Argentina, Brazil, and Paraguay. Reed's work on the Chiripá of Paraguay (1981-1984) is an exploration of the various social and economic factors which has permitted this group to maintain their own distinct culture and society even after many years of contact with the dominant Paraguayan society. Major subject coverage in this file is on acculturation in various forms -- in terms of the Guaraní economy, religion, material culture, community and family structure, music, and folklore

Abstract: Haitian Americans are people living in the United States whose origins are the island of Haiti. This file consists of eleven documents, all in English. The time coverage for the file ranges from approximately 1958 to the 1980s. The primary focus of the file is on the Haitian population in New York City (seven documents), with a secondary foci on Miami, Florida (two documents), and on Evanston, Illinois and the United States as a whole (one document each). Probably the most comprehensive study of the Haitian Americans is that of Laguerre which although centering on the New York City area does provide some additional data on other Haitian groups in the United States (e.g., regarding internal migrations, etc.). Nearly all the works in this file deal in a greater or lesser degree with the Haitian emigration to the United States, settlement patterns, the establishment of new ethnic identities, cultural adaptation, and relations with the black American population. Other major topics of ethnographic interest are: sociological and sociolinguistic analysis of Haitians in America, language use (French, Creole, English), social structure of the Haitian community, economics and education, and family organization and structure

This file consists of 17 documents covering the time period from 1939 to 1980. Silva's ethnographic account is the most comprehensive. The three Fulop publications, used in conjunction with those by Sorensen and Reichel-Dolmatoff provide supplemental data on kinship terminology, folktales and myths, cosmology, shamanism, agriculture, and multilingualism and tribal exogamy. The remaining documents relate to the Cubeo, Bará, Makuna, Desana, Barasana, and Wanano

Abstract: Cryptography is one of the technological means to provide security for data on information and communications systems. It can be used to protect the confidentiality of data, such as financial or personal data, whether that data is in storage or in transit. Cryptography can also be used to verify the integrity of data by revealing whether data has been altered and identifying the person or device that sent it. These techniques are critical to the development and use of national and global information and communications networks and technologies, as well as the development of electronic commerce. This book includes the Recommendation of the OECD Council concerning Guidelines for Cryptography Policy, the text of the Guidelines itself, and a report which explains the context for the guidelines and the basic issues involved in the cryptography policy debate.

Abstract: The years between 1790 and 1830 saw over a hundred and fifty million people brought under British imperial control, and one of the most momentous outbursts of British literary and artistic production, announcing a new world of social and individual traumas and possibilities. This book traces the emergence of new forms of imperialism and capitalism as part of a culture of modernisation in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century, and looks at the ways in which they were identified with and contested in Romanticism. Saree Makdisi argues that this process has to be understood in global terms, beyond the British and European viewpoint, and that developments in India, Africa, and the Arab world (up to and including our own time) enable us to understand more fully the texts and contexts of British Romanticism. New and original readings of texts by Wordsworth, Blake, Byron, Shelley, and Scott emerge in the course of this searching analysis of the cultural process of globalisation. Abstract: Anthropology students increasingly need a quantitative background, but statistics are often seen as difficult and impenetrable. Statistics for Anthropology offers students of anthropology and other social sciences an easy, step-by-step route through the statistical maze. In clear, simple language, using relevant examples and practice problems, it provides a solid footing in basic statistical techniques, and is designed to give students a thorough grounding in methodology, and also insight into how and when to apply the various processes. The book assumes a minimal background in mathematics, and is suitable for the computer-literate and illiterate. Although only a hand calculator is needed, computer statistical software can be used to accompany the text. This book will be a 'must-have' for all anthropology and social science students needing an introduction to basic statistics.

Abstract: Feminist theories have focused on contemporary, Western, middle-class experiences of maternity. This 1998 volume brings other mothers, from Asia and the Pacific, into scholarly view, aiming to show that birthing and mothering can be a very different experience for women in other parts of the world. The contributors document a wide variety of conceptions of motherhood, and drawing on ethnographic and historical research, they explore the relationships between motherhood as embodied experience and the local discourses on maternity. They show how the experience of motherhood has been influenced by missionaries, by colonial policies and by the introduction of Western medicine and biomedical birthing methods, and raise important questions about the costs and benefits of becoming a modern mother in these societies.

Abstract: In this 1998 book, Meyda Yegenoglu investigates the intersection between post-colonial and feminist criticism, focusing on the Western fascination with the veiled women of the Orient. She examines the veil as a site of fantasy and of nationalist ideologies and discourses of gender identity, analyzing travel literature, anthropological and literary texts to reveal the hegemonic, colonial identity of the desire to penetrate the veiled surface of 'otherness'. Representations of cultural difference and sexual difference are shown to be inextricably linked, and the figure of the Oriental woman to have functioned as the veiled interior of Western identity

Abstract: Large-scale comparisons are out of fashion in anthropology, but this book suggests a bold comparative approach to broad cultural differences between Africa and Melanesia. Its theme is personhood, which is understood in terms of what anthropologists call 'embodiment'. These concepts are applied to questions ranging from the meanings of spirit possession, to the logics of witchcraft and kinship relations, the use of rituals to heal the sick, 'electric vampires', and even the impact of capitalism. There are detailed ethnographic analyses, and suggestive comparisons of classic African and Melanesian ethnographic cases, such as the Nuer and the Melpa. The contributors debate alternative strategies for cross-cultural comparison, and demonstrate that there is a surprising range of continuities, putting in question common assumptions about the huge differences between these two parts of the world.

Forbidden Rites consists of an edition of this medieval Latin text with a full commentary, including detailed analysis of the text and its contents, discussion of the historical context, translation of representative sections of the text, and comparison with other necromantic texts of the late Middle Ages. The result is the most vivid and readable introduction to medieval magic now available. Like many medieval texts for the use of magicians, this handbook is a miscellany rather than a systematic treatise. It is exceptional, however, in the scope and variety of its contents-prayers and conjurations, rituals of sympathetic magic, procedures involving astral magic, a catalogue of spirits, lengthy ceremonies for consecrating a book of magic, and other materials. With more detail on particular experiments than the famous thirteenth-century Picatrix and more variety than the Thesaurus Necromantiae ascribed to Roger Bacon, the manual is one of the most interesting and important manuscripts of medieval magic that has yet come to light

Note: Includes bibliographical references and index , "Asking and Listening is the first book to trace the changing ways in which human beings have learned to look at "the Others Beyond the Gate" with their strange languages and stranger customs. Not a history of ethnography so much as a chronicle of its uses and potentials, Asking and Listening examines the premises of ethnography and concerns itself with a wide range of issues such as ethnocentrism and the morass of cultural relativism, the cultures of corporations, and the meaning of ethnography for government policy. It ends with an examination of the problems in charting our tomorrows: ethnography in the information age, and for the future. Through its pragmatic analysis of cultures as storehouses of alternatives in the way universal problems can and have been approached, Asking and Listening offers students not merely the opportunity to make sense of descriptions of other peoples' lifeways, but makes such ethnographic knowledge immediately useful in their own lives and choices and career plans. Abstract: Dolores Martinez heads an international team of scholars in this lively discussion of Japanese popular culture. The book's contributors include Japanese as well as British, Icelandic and North American writers, offering a diversity of views of what Japanese popular culture is, and how it is best approached and understood. They bring an anthropological perspective to a broad range of topics, including sumo, karaoke, manga, vampires, women's magazines, soccer and morning television. Through these topics - many of which have never previously been addressed by scholars - the contributors also explore several deeper themes: the construction of gender in Japan; the impact of globalisation and modern consumerism; and the rapidly shifting boundaries of Japanese culture and identity. This innovative study will appeal to those interested in Japanese culture, sociology and cultural anthropology.

Abstract: Sixteen essays in the social and economic history of the ancient world, by a leading historian of classical antiquity, are here brought conveniently together. Three overlapping parts deal with the urban economy and society, peasants and the rural economy, and food-supply and food-crisis. While focusing on eleven centuries of antiquity from archaic Greece to late imperial Rome, the essays include theoretical and comparative analyses of food-crisis and pastoralism, and an interdisciplinary study of the health status of the people of Rome using physical anthropology and nutritional science. A variety of subjects are treated, from the misconduct of a builders' association in late antique Sardis, to a survey of the cultural associations and physiological effects of the broad bean
Description / Table of Contents: Aspects of the decline of the urban aristocracy in the empire -- Independent freedmen and the economy of Roman Italy under the Principate -- Economy and society of Mediolanum under the Principate -- Urban property investment in Roman society -- An association of builders in late antique Sardis -- Peasants in ancient Roman society -- Where did Italian peasants live? -- Non-slave labour in the Roman world
Description / Table of Contents: Prolegomenon to a study of the land in the later Roman empire -- Mountain economies in southern Europe -- Grain for Athens -- The yield of the land in ancient Greece -- The bean: substance and symbol -- Mass diet and nutrition in the city of Rome -- Child rearing in ancient Italy -- Famine in history

Description / Table of Contents: Long description: Als öffentliche Einrichtungen für Drei- bis Sechsjährige sind Kindergärten heute etwas Selbstverständliches und gelten als wichtige Ergänzung der familiären Erziehung.

Abstract: In 1992, there was an explosion of 'stock fever' in Shanghai. 'From the moment I set foot in Shanghai until my last day there, people from all walks of life wanted to talk to me about the market', Ellen Hertz writes. Her 1998 study sets the stock market and its players in the context of Shanghai society, and it probes the dominant role played by the state, which has yielded a stock market very different from those of the West. A trained anthropologist, she explains the way in which investors and officials construct a 'moral storyline' to make sense of this great structural innovation, identifying a struggle between three groups of actors - the big investors, the little investors, and the state - to control the market

Abstract: This book investigates how identities have been constructed in Australian art from 1788 onwards. Ian McLean shows that Australian art, and the writing of its history, has, since settlement, been in a dialogue (although often submerged) with Aboriginal art and culture; and that this dialogue is inextricably interwoven with the struggle to find an identity in the antipodes. Beginning with a discussion of how Australia was imagined by Europeans before colonisation, McLean traces the representation of indigeneity through the history of Australian art, and the concomitant invention of an Australian subjectivity. He argues that the colonising culture invested far more in indigenous aspects of the country and its inhabitants than it has been willing to admit. McLean considers artists and their work within a cultural context, and also provides a contemporary theoretical and critical context for his claims.

Abstract: This ambitious book treats urbanisation and urbanism all over the world, and from the earliest times to the present. Aidan Southall, a pioneer in the study of African cities, discusses the urban centres of ancient Sumeria, Greece and Rome, as well as medieval European cities, Chinese, Japanese, Islamic and Indic cities, colonial cities, and the great metropolises of the twentieth century. Drawing on this historical and comparative perspective, he offers a fresh analysis of world urbanisation in the contemporary period of globalisation. The study emphasises the enduring paradox of the city, which juxtaposes splendid cultural productions with the poverty and deprivation of the majority

Abstract: Nationalism is one of the major social and political issues of modern times, and a subject of intense intellectual debate. The most important and influential theory of nationalism is that of Ernest Gellner (1925–1995). This volume assesses every aspect of that theory, bringing together an exceptional set of scholars to explain, criticise and move beyond Gellner's work. In doing so the book establishes the state-of-play within the theory of nationalism, and complements Gellner's account by bringing political variables back into play. The book is unique in offering sustained attention to a single powerful theory, and will be of wide interest to students and scholars of political and social theory, history, sociology and anthropology

Abstract: This collection of essays centers on the formation of an ethnic identity among Chinese Americans during the period when immigration was halted. The first section emphasizes the attempts by immigrant Chinese to assert their intention of becoming Americans and to defend the few rights they had as resident aliens. Highlighting such individuals as Yung Wing, and ardent advocate of American social and political ideals, and Wong Chin Foo, one of the first activists for Chinese citizenship and voting rights, these essays speak eloquently about the early struggles in the Americanization movement.

Abstract: In the American popular imagination, Chinatown is a mysterious and dangerous place, clannish and dilapidated, filled with sweatshops, vice, and organized crime. In this well-written and engaging volume, Jan Lin presents a real-world picture of New York City's Chinatown, countering this "orientalist" view by looking at the human dimensions and the larger forces of globalization that make this vital neighborhood both unique and broadly instructive

Abstract: Exploring the way race and gender are portrayed in popular culture, this text focuses on the representation of black women. It incorporates a discussion of the politics of representation in Britain and North America, and the shift from negative stereotypes to positive images to postmodern knowingness. The author pays particular attention to the reach of various race/gender literacies, most notably the impact of North American racial discourse on British conceptions of Asian and Afro-Caribbean femininity.

Abstract: Eating and drinking are essential to life and therefore of great interest to the historian. As well as having a real fascination in their own right, both activities are an integral part of the both social and economic history. Yet food and drink, especially in the middle ages, have received less than their proper share of attention. The essays in this volume approach their subject from a variety of angles: from the reality of starvation and the reliance on 'fast food' of those without cooking facilities, to the consumption of an English lady's household and the career of a cook in the French royal household.

Abstract: Each year thousands of men and women from more than sixty countries journey by foot and bicycle across northern Spain, following the medieval pilgrimage road known as the Camino de Santiago. Their destination is Santiago de Compostela, where the remains of the apostle James are said to be buried. These modern-day pilgrims and the role of the pilgrimage in their lives are the subject of Nancy Louise Frey's fascinating book. Unlike the religiously-oriented pilgrims who visit Marian shrines such as Lourdes, the modern Road of St. James attracts an ecumenical mix of largely well-educated, urban middle-class participants. Eschewing comfortable methods of travel, they choose physically demanding journeys, some as long as four months, in order to experience nature, enjoy cultural and historical patrimony, renew faith, or cope with personal trauma. Frey's anthropological study focuses on the remarkable reanimation of the Road that has gained momentum since the 1980s. Her intensive fieldwork (including making the pilgrimage several times herself) provides a colorful portrayal of the pilgrimage while revealing a spectrum of hopes, discontents, and desires among its participants, many of whom feel estranged from society. The Camino's physical and mental journey offers them closer community, greater personal knowledge, and links to the past and to nature. But what happens when pilgrims return home? Exploring this crucial question Frey finds that pilgrims often reflect deeply on their lives and some make significant changes: an artistic voice is discovered, a marriage is ended, meaningful work is found. Other pilgrims repeat the pilgrimage or join a pilgrims' association to keep their connection to the Camino alive. And some only remain pilgrims while on the road. In all, Pilgrim Stories is an exceptional prism through which to understand the desires and...
Abstract: dissatisfactions of contemporary Western life at the end of the millennium. "Feet are touched, discussed, massaged, [and] become signs of a journey well traveled: 'I did it all on foot!' . . . Pilgrims give feet a power and importance not recognized in daily life, as a causeway and direct channel to the road, the past, meaningful relations, nature, and the self.".

Abstract: The advent of Franz Boas on the North American scene irrevocably redirected the course of Americanist anthropology. This volume documents the revolutionary character of the theoretical and methodological standpoint introduced by Boas and his first generation of students, among whom linguist Edward Sapir was among the most distinguished. Virtually all of the classic Boasians were at least part-time linguists alongside their ethnological work. During the crucial transitional period beginning with the founding of the Bureau of American Ethnology in 1879, there were as many continuities as discontinuities between the work of Boas and that of John Wesley Powell and his Bureau. Boas shared with Powell a commitment to the study of aboriginal languages, to a symbolic definition of culture, to ethnography based on texts, to historical reconstruction on linguistic grounds, and to mapping the linguistic and cultural diversity of native North America. The obstacle to Boas's vision of anthropology was not the Bureau but the archaeological and museum establishment centred in Washington, D.C. and in Boston. Moreover, the "scientific revolution" was concluded not when Boas began to teach at Columbia University in New York in 1897 but around 1920 when first generation Boasians cominated the discipline in institutional as well as theoretical terms. The impact of Boas is explored in terms of theoretical positions, interactional networks of scholars, and institutions within which anthropological work was carried out. The volume shows how collaboration of universities and museums gradually gave way to an academic centre for anthropology in North America, in line with the professionalization of American science along German lines during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The author is Professor of Anthropology and Director of the Centre for Research and Teaching...

Abstract: This cutting-edge volume advances theories, methodologies and policy analyses relating to various forms of violence against women. Topics covered include: the nature, importance and variety of cultural contexts in which violence occurs, is reproduced and may be challenged or changed; the nature and variety of sexualized violence; and a range of theoretical perspectives on perpetrators of violence. Taking an interdisciplinary focus on issues that affect community and state responses, the book includes individual accounts, and incorporates themes related to authority, sexual proprietariness, asymmetry of violence, socialization, patterns and deviations of victims and offenders, and social and cultural contexts.

Abstract: A pervasive force that evades easy analysis, globalization has come to represent the export and import of culture, the speed and intensity of which has increased to unprecedented levels in recent years. The Cultures of Globalization presents an international panel of intellectuals who consider the process of globalization as it concerns the transformation of the economic into the cultural and vice versa; the rise of consumer culture around the world; the production and cancellation of forms of subjectivity; and the challenges it presents to national identity, local culture, and traditional forms of everyday life.Discussing overlapping themes of transnational consequence, the contributors to this volume describe how the global character of technology, communication networks, consumer culture, intellectual discourse, the arts, and mass entertainment have all been affected by recent worldwide trends. Appropriate to such diversity of material, the authors approach their topics from a variety of theoretical perspectives, including those of linguistics, sociology, economics, anthropology, and the law. Essays examine such topics as free trade, capitalism, the North and South, Eurocentrism, language migration, art and cinema, social fragmentation, sovereignty and nationhood, higher education, environmental justice, wealth and poverty, transnational corporations, and global culture. Bridging the spheres of economic, political, and cultural inquiry, The Cultures of Globalization offers crucial insights into many of the most significant changes occurring in today?s world.Contributors.
