    Abstract: Im Mittelpunkt steht die Frage, was der Vorruhestand für die Ostdeutschen lebensbiographisch bedeutet und welche Funktion und Effekte dieser Aspekt des Institutionentransfers arbeits-markt- und sozialpolitisch hatte. Der Autor entwickelt zur Charakterisierung dieses Vorgangs den Begriff des "Verordneten Ruhestands". Eine theoretisch modellierte umfangreiche Empirie zeigt die subjektiv biographischen Erfahrung und Verarbeitung des "Verordneten Ruhestands" im Kontext der umfas-senden Probleme der deutschen Einigung. Die Darstellung macht deutlich, daß der Institutionentransfer im Zuge der Einigung zwar eine Einheit institutioneller Regeln, zugleich aber auch eine Differenz der Mentalitäten erzeugt und verstärkt hat. Im Ergebnis entwirft der Autor eine theoretisch begründete und empirisch differenzierte Typologie kultureller Handlungs- und Rückzugsmuster. Die Darstellung zeigt, wie differenziert Lebens- und Systemgeschichte zusammengehören. Unübersehbar, daß Probleme des Wohlfahrsstaates im Zuge fortschreitender Modernisierung von den Menschen Anstrengungen, Neuarrangements und Verantwortung verlangen.
    Abstract: This thesis focuses on the effect of early retirement on the lives of East Germans, the function of this aspect of institutional transfer and its consequences for the job market and socio-political structures. The term coined by the author to describe this process is "prescribed retirement". Comprehensive empirical analysis based on a theoretical model has been used to demonstrate in subjective, biographical terms how "prescribed retirement" is experienced and dealt with within the problematical context of German unification. This account shows clearly that, while generating a uniform set of institutional norms, the institutional transfer necessitated by unification has also served to produce and heighten differences in mentality between the respective citizens of the two former German states. In his conclusions, the author has set up a theoretically based and empirically differentiated typology of cultural patterns of action and withdrawal. His account demonstrates the many ways in which human lives can be linked with the history of the system. The obvious conclusion is that in view of the modernisation process, the problems of the welfare state will necessitate an increased contribution from its members in terms of effort, re-arrangement and responsibility.

    Abstract: A sophisticated and engaging ethnographic account of the Palestinian citizens of Israel, and the first since the 1970s, Overlooking Nazareth examines specific situations of friction, conflict and co-operation in Natzerat Illit. This Israeli new town is built on formerly Palestinian land, just outside the biblical town of Nazareth, and has a population of 25,000 Jewish Israelis and 3,500 Palestinians. Dr Rabinowitz has written widely on the current political situation in Israel and has conducted extensive fieldwork in Galilee, and he describes his study as a guided walk along a border, a sketch of interfaces 'where the complex, often paradoxical aspects of the border situation are negotiated and acted out most vividly'. He highlights the extent to which anti-Palestinian sentiments for which the town is known actually reflect widespread views of most Israelis. This is a major contribution to our understanding of the confrontation between Israelis and Palestinians. It offers powerful critique of reflexive anthropology and offers fresh insights into notions of ethnicity and identity, nationalism and liberalism

    Abstract: This wide-ranging study focuses upon the controversies surrounding the meaning and significance of Social Darwinism. It clarifies the nature of Social Darwinism and its relationship to the ideas of Darwin, Lamarck and Herbert Spencer. After examining the development of Social Darwinist theories by a number of European and American thinkers, Mike Hawkins explores the use of these theories in a number of ideological debates and movements of the period 1860–1945. These include socio-political reform, national and racial conflict, eugenics, the position of women and Nazism/Fascism. The aim is to illuminate, through detailed comparative analyses, both the flexibility and the limits of Social Darwinism - limits which derive from the view of nature which lies at the very heart of Social Darwinism. The study concludes with a discussion of modern sociobiology in order to assess the continuing vitality of Social Darwinism.

Studies of these issues commonly focus on political activity and the plight of minorities, but this book breaks new ground in its emphasis on the everyday reactions of Italians to immigration and related issues. Drawing on research carried out in Palermo, Jeffrey Cole considers the role of class, culture, local history and political economy in the ambivalent responses of Sicilians to immigrants. He places Italian attitudes in a European context, and investigates why anti-immigrant politics are concentrated in the wealthy Italian North.

This five-part volume surveys the main ideas and contributions of the field. It contains twenty-five essays written by thirty scholars, both economists and political scientists, from North America and Europe. Part I discusses the nature and justification for the existence of government and various forms it can take, including mixed, private, and public institutions, international organizations, federalisms, and constitutional governments. Part II examines the properties of different voting rules and preference aggregation procedures. Part III explores multiparty systems, interest groups, logrolling and political business cycles. Written with refreshing clarity and wit, Political Correctness describes a cultural nonphenomenon brought into being by the desires of neoconservatives. Nostalgic for the simple moral logic of the Cold War, the conservative Right has created an evil empire within and conferred upon its enemies-from multiculturalists to postmodernists and poststructuralists-a McCarthyite agenda that demands action from the high-minded. What clearly marks this as a projection, Richard Feldstein points out, is the moralism attributed to the forces of political correctness by their conservative critics. And where, in fact, do we find the obsessive fixation on judgment, morality, and correct and appropriate behavior that might make political correctness so reprehensible? It is, Feldstein argues, a central feature of right-wing thinking, projected onto those who reject such black-and-white, good-and-bad views as naive. Political Correctness defines this procedure in comparison with the process of psychological projection, in which consciousness transfers onto others what it cannot tolerate. In the case of cultural projection, Feldstein says, the transference is often intentional. In readings of key neoconservative texts, Feldstein shows how this approach got its initial boost with the ascension of Reagan and the Moral Majority, continued as the dominant form of Republicanism in the Bush-Quayle era, and persists during the Clinton administration.     Abstract: At once historically and theoretically informed, these essays invite the reader to think of religion dynamically, reconsidering American religious history in terms of practices that are linked to specific social contexts. The point of departure is the concept of "lived religion." Discussing such topics as gift exchange, cremation, hymn-singing, and women's spirituality, a group of leading sociologists and historians of religion explore the many facets of how people carry out their religious beliefs on a daily basis. As David Hall notes in his introduction, a history of practices "encompasses the tensions, the ongoing struggle of definition, that are constituted within every religious tradition and that are always present in how people choose to act. Practice thus suggests that any synthesis is provisional." The volume opens with two essays by Robert Orsi and Danièle Hervieu-Léger that offer an overview of the rapidly growing study of lived religion, with Hervieu-Léger using the Catholic charismatic renewal movement in France as a window through which to explore the coexistence of regulation and spontaneity within religious practice. Anne S. Brown and David D. Hall examine family strategies and church membership in early New England. Leigh Eric Schmidt looks at the complex meanings of gift-giving in America. Stephen Prothero writes about the cremation movement in the late nineteenth century. In an essay on the narrative structure of Mrs. Cowman's Streams in the Desert, Cheryl Forbes considers the devotional lives of everyday women. Michael McNally uses the practice of hymn-singing among the Ojibwa to reexamine the categories of native and Christian religion. In essays centering on domestic life, Rebecca Kneale Gould investigates modern homesteading as lived religion while R. Marie Griffith treats home-oriented spirituality in the Women's Aglow Fellowship. In "Golden- Rule Christianity," Nancy Ammerman talks about lived religion in the American mainstream

    Abstract: Die Medien sind ein plastisches Beispiel für technisch-institutionelle Interdependenzen: Im Zuge der von technischen Neuerungen vorangetriebenen Marktdynamik werden tradierte institutionelle Arrangements obsolet, womit neue ordnungspolitische Herausforderungen entstehen. Wenn aber die Medien eine »vierte Gewalt« bilden, so kann der rasante Veränderungsprozeß nicht nur mit einem »laisser faire« beantwortet werden. Die ordnungspolitische Herausforderung ist also bei den Medien besonders groß und bedarf sorgfältiger wissenschaftlicher Reflexion. Die »Arbeitsgruppe Wettbewerb des Wirtschaftspolitischen Ausschusses« im Verein für Socialpolitik erörterte dieses Spannungsverhältnis zwischen Freiheit und Zwang eingehend mit Vertretern aus Politik, Verbandswesen und Unternehmenspraxis. Der Tagungsband beinhaltet die Referate sowie zusätzliche Beiträge: -- Dr. Werner Hippe, Präsident des Verbandes Deutscher Zeitschriftenverleger e. V., Bonn, verdeutlicht die Chancen und Risiken der Zeitschriftenverlage angesichts der veränderten technischen Möglichkeiten. -- Peter Voß, Intendant des Südwestdeutschen Rundfunks, Baden-Baden, erörtert die gegenwärtige und zukünftige Legitimation des öffentlich-rechtlichen Rundfunks in einer sich wandelnden Umwelt. -- Reinhard Klimmt, MdL, Vorsitzender der Medienkommission des SPDBundesvorstands, referiert über die sozialen Gestaltungspotentiale der Medienpolitik. -- Prof. eh.     Abstract: Forbes takes a critical look at the "contact hypothesis" - the assumption commonly held by social scientists that increased contact between different ethnic groups gives each group more accurate information about the other and thus reduces friction. By distinguishing aggregate from individual relations, Forbes suggests a way out of the perplexities induced by current social science literature on prejudice and discrimination. Scientific research suggests that increased contact between culturally distinct groups in some cases gives rise to more intense conflict. Yet individuals who get to know each other better generally like each other better. Can these apparently conflicting generalizations both be true? asks Forbes. They are, he argues, and he takes contemporary social science to task for failing to show how and why this is possible. The author clarifies the weaknesses of contact theory, develops an alternative "linguistic model" of ethnic conflict, and concludes with penetrating reflections on the politics and methodology of the social sciences today.
