Abstract: Michel Foucault's History of Sexuality has been one of the most influential books of the last two decades. It has had an enormous impact on cultural studies and work across many disciplines on gender, sexuality, and the body. Bringing a new set of questions to this key work, Ann Laura Stoler examines volume one of History of Sexuality in an unexplored light. She asks why there has been such a muted engagement with this work among students of colonialism for whom issues of sexuality and power are so essential. Why is the colonial context absent from Foucault's history of a European sexual discourse that for him defined the bourgeois self? In Race and the Education of Desire, Stoler challenges Foucault's tunnel vision of the West and his marginalization of empire. She also argues that this first volume of History of Sexuality contains a suggestive if not studied treatment of race. Drawing on Foucault's little-known 1976 College de France lectures, Stoler addresses his treatment of the relationship between biopower, bourgeois sexuality, and what he identified as racisms of the state. In this critical and historically grounded analysis based on cultural theory and her own extensive research in Dutch and French colonial archives, Stoler suggests how Foucault's insights have in the past constrained -- and in the future may help shape -- the ways we trace the genealogies of race. Race and the Education of Desire will revise current notions of the connections between European and colonial historiography and between the European bourgeois order and the colonial treatment of sexuality. Arguing that a history of European nineteenth-century sexuality must also be a history of race, it will change the way we think about Foucault." from http://search.barnesandnoble.com (Jan. 25, 2011.)

Abstract: Ethnicity is a central theme of the American experience. In this book, Richard D. Alba examines the changing role of ethnicity in the lives of Americans from a broad range of European backgrounds.Alba shows that while the ethnic origins of white Americans have less and less import in such measurable areas as educational and occupational achievement and marriage, they are still salient in more subjective ways.Using data from in-depth interviews with more than five hundred people, Alba examines the impact of ethnicity on food, friendships, organizational memberships, encounters with prejudice, and children's sense of identity. He shows how the specific ethnic backgrounds of white Americans have diminished in objective importance as intermarriage between Americans of different European origins increases and ethnically mixed ancestry becomes more prevalent. Ethnic identity among this group is increasingly symbolic, an attachment to a fewcultural traditions, imposing little cost on everyday life. However, says Alba, ethnicity has emerged on the American scene in a new way with the formation of a new ethnic group based on ancestry from all parts of the European continent. This new group--which Alba calls the "European Americans"--has its own myths about its place in American history and its relation to the American identity. Its emergence has repercussions for racial minorities and new immigrant groups from Asia, Latin America, and the Caribbean

Abstract: Why did 60 million people leave Europe for overseas destinations in the hundred years after the Napoleonic Wars? What were the social and economic causes and effects of this mass migration? Why did some people emigrate and not others, and why did so many emigrants return to Europe? This short comprehensive survey answers these and other questions regarding emigration from different parts of Europe in the years between 1815 and 1930. Written specifically for undergraduate students, it reviews the current literature in several European languages, summarises both economic and demographic theories, and analyses the relation between economic change in Europe and the emigration rate, as well as discussing the economic effects of immigration on the receiving countries and the social experiences or the immigrants

Abstract: The Irish Famine of 1846–50 was one of the great disasters of the nineteenth century, whose notoriety spreads as far as the mass emigration which followed it. Cormac O'Gráda's concise survey suggests that a proper understanding of the disaster requires an analysis of the Irish economy before the invasion of the potato-killing fungus, Phytophthora infestans, highlighting Irish poverty and the importance of the potato, but also finding signs of economic progress before the Famine. Despite the massive decline in availability of food, the huge death toll of one million (from a population of 8.5 million) was hardly inevitable; there are grounds for supporting the view that a less doctrinaire attitude to famine relief would have saved many lives. This book provides an up-to-date introduction by a leading expert to an event of major importance in the history of nineteenth-century Ireland and Britain.

Abstract: The demographic shockwaves of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries in Europe produced tremendous change in the national economies and affected the political, social, and cultural development of these societies. Migration historians have begun to connect the various European migratory streams during this period with transcontinental migration to North America. This volume contains empirical studies on German in-migration, internal migration, and transatlantic emigration from the 1820s to the 1930s, placed in a comparative perspective of Polish, Swedish, and Irish migration to North America. Special emphasis is placed on the role of women in the process of migration. By looking specifically at postwar Germany, Klaus J. Bade underscores the relevance of this history in a concluding essay.

Abstract: This collection of 6 documents covers the time period from the middle of the nineteenth century to the 1980s with an emphasis on some of the major Chinatowns located in several Canadian cities. Much of the file deals with the migration of the Chinese to Canada and the restrictive immigration policies applied to them by the Canadian government. Nearly all the documents address the discriminatory and racist practices imposed on the Chinese immigrants by the Caucasian Canadian society. Probably the best general coverage on the Chinese in Canada is presented in Li, which deals with the period from their first arrival in Canada in 1858 to about 1985. Lai is a definitive history of Chinatowns in Canada from 1858-ca. 1985, with particular reference to Victoria, British Columbia. Works describing specific Chinatowns in specific cities begins with Thompson, which is an examination of the history and social organization of the Chinese population in Toronto, Canada. Anderson contributes a systematic analysis of the relationship between Vancouver's Chinese and Canadian communities from the late 1880s to about 1980. Hoe presents a socio-historical study of the structural changes taking place in various Chinese communities in British Columbia and Alberta (Calgary and Edmonton), from the mid-nineteenth century to ca. 1972

Abstract: Chinese Americans are the migrants and their descendants who migrated from China to the United States, starting in approximately 1848. This file contains fifteen documents covering the time period from ca. 1848 to the 1980s. These documents deal with Chinatowns located in several American cities (e.g., San Francisco, New York City), plus additional data on the Chinese American populations in such regional areas as the Monterey Bay region of California, and Hawaii. Much of the file deals with the history of the migration of the Chinese to the United States and the restrictive immigration policies applied to them by the United States government. Additional topics that appear in all the documents in this file are those of the discriminatory and racist practices imposed on the Chinese immigrants by the Caucasian American society, cultural adaptation and acculturation, Chinese associations, and ethnic businesses (e.g., restaurants, laundries, and groceries)

Abstract: The Cajuns are an ethnic minority of the United States who have lived mainly in south-central and southwestern Louisiana since the late eighteenth century. The term generally applies to the descendants of the French Acadians who migrated from Canada to Louisiana. This file includes eighteen documents and covers the period from the late eighteenth century to the 1980s. These documents include a heavy emphasis on cultural history and the Cajun concept of ethnic identity. Probably the best general ethnography for the file is Ancelet which presents a comprehensive study of Acadian/Cajun cultural history from the early seventeenth century in Nova Scotia to the present day in Louisiana. It also includes contemporary data on family religion, folk medicine and law, architecture, foodways, music, games, and oral literary traditions. Esman provides an ethnographic survey of the community of Henderson, La. which includes data on the history of the community, its economy, restaurants, family life, sex roles, social life, religion, politics, play and leisure activities, and relations with neighboring communities and with other ethnic minority groups

Abstract: The Andamanese were the indigenous hunters and gatherers of the Andaman Islands. Comprising thirteen distinct ethnic groups at the beginning of the twentieth century, by late in the century only nineteen individuals remained. Thirteen documents have been included in the AZ02 Andamans file. These documents fall roughly into two groups on the basis of field dates and tribes studied. The earliest group contains the two major monographs in the file, Radcliffe-Brown and Man, plus a third monograph, Temple. These works focus primarily on the Andamanese tribes of Great Andaman. Man is the first important study; it was written by a government official who observed the Andamanese during the period 1869-1880 when their social and cultural life was still largely intact. Man's data pertain mainly to the Aka-Bea tribe of South Andaman, with a coverage of general ethnography, physical anthropology, and language. Temple was a government official who was in the area at the turn of the century (1901). His data are primarily on demography and geography, but include some ethnography and linguistics, drawing heavily on Man's work for the latter. Radcliffe-Brown is by a distinguished social anthropologist who presents a functional analysis of social organization, religio-magical beliefs and practices, and mythology. Unfortunately, by the time of Radcliffe-Brown's field work in 1906-1908, the Andamanese were at an advanced stage of population decline and socio-cultural disintegration, so he was unable to get a clear, detailed picture of the traditional society in operation. Radcliffe-Brown studied mainly the North Andaman tribes, plus the A-Pucikwar and Akar-Bale of the southern group. By the time the remaining nine documents were written, based on field work in the late 1940s, early 1950s, and later, the Andamanese were nearly extinct, and thus much of the material in these works deal primarily with the Ongees (Onges) and Jarwas (Jarawas)

Abstract: The Taiwan Hokkien collection consists of 64 documents, all in English. None of the 64 documents maybe considered a comprehensive general survey of Taiwanese Hokkien culture or society. Given the variability of cultural forms among Hokkien, in such institutional realms for example, as kinship and religion, it is doubtful that such a survey could even be written. Yet it is precisely this variability, and the highly sophisticated use of social theory employed in many of these documents, that make this collection extremely rich for cross-cultural or comparative studies (researchers should check for time and place coverage to determine the specific collection focus for the document he or she is using, since the generalizations made by authors often apply only to specific fieldwork locales rather than to the entire collection unit). Specific areas of inquiry for which the cross-cultural researcher will find this collection rewarding include the relationship between varieties of religious belief and community structure, the relationship of ecology and settlement patterns to lineage organization, and patterns of family/household organization

Abstract: The Mbuti (Bambuti, pl.) in a general sense are the Pygmies of the Ituri forest in Democratic Republic of the Congo and consist of four subgroups; the Aka, Efe, Mbuti, and Sua. This file on the Mbuti consists of 6 documents with coverage from 1930 to ca. 1975. The file is restricted in its coverage to the Pygmies of the southern and central Ituri forest who are associated with the Babira villagers. The literature contained in the Mbuti file is almost all by Colin Turnbull, whose fieldwork spanned the period from ca. 1950 through 1973

Abstract: The Shluh belong to the Masmuda branch of sedentary Berbers inhabiting the Grand-Atlas and Anti-Atlas Mountains and the plain of the Sous River Valley in southern Morocco. They are divided into a large number of relatively small named groups. The term Shluh refers rather indiscriminately to nearly all speakers of Berber dialects in Morocco. This file consists of six documents, three are translations from the French, and three are in English. Berque and Montagne are the major works in the file supplemented by the more recent data presented in Hatt. Montagne deals with the history and political evolution of the Shluh, dealing in turn with the Sous region, with the political organization of the Berber republics, and with the rise to personal power of individual chiefs. Dupas is a short description of the community storehouses in use among the Shluh. Hoffman contains general information on the structure of traditional society, ecology, and economy. Hatt updates the existing material on the Shluh through 1971, deals with the Idaw Tanan confederation of the Shluh, and contains information on economy, subsistence patterns, social structure, and social relationships

Abstract: The Lozi consist of a number of interrelated ethnic groups located along the Zambezi River in Barotse Province of western Zambia. This file consists of 11 documents, including one translation from the German, and covers the period from 1920-1960. Turner's work provides an overall view of Lozi culture and society touchs on the major areas of Lozi ethnography as reflected in the cultural patterns of the affiliated tribes of the Central Barotse Plains. Lozi political structure is discussed in some detail in Gluckman and further supplemented by Jensen. Peters discusses native agricultural techniques, soils and general land use. Gluckman's writings deal with the pattern of land distribution of Barotse property to all homesteads, the king's protection of subjects' rights to a piece of land and the forms of tribute and gifts from commoners to royalty, the relation of bride-price, presence or lack of agnatic lineage groups, inheritance rules and general stability of marriage and the nuclear household, aspects of Barotse jurisprudence, and economic behavior. Reynolds presents a compilation of data relevant to Barotse sorcery based on records of investigations and judicial proceedings conducted by British officials in 1956 during a wave of sorcery and witchcraft incidents. Prins is a comprehensive and reliable account of Lozi society as it existed between the years 1876-1896

Abstract: The Yanoama are indigenous people straddling the border between extreme southeastern Venezuela and upper northwestern Brazil. This file consists of eleven documents that concentrate on specific Yanoama villages or subgroups and covers the time period from approximately 1950 to 1987. The monograph by Shuster is on the Waica and contains a sociological analysis of inter- and intra-community relations. The two documents by Barker, an American Protestant missionary, are also on the Waica. The main subject of the article by Layrisse is blood groups among the Waica. Some comparative information is included. Ethnographic information on material culture, religion, and political structure of the Surara and Pakidai is contained in the document by Becher. The Yanoama language of the Surara and Pakidai is the subject of the document by Rodrigues. The chapter from Wilbert's book is on the Sanema primarily, with information on other Venezuelan Indians included as well. The two monographs by Chagnon are general ethnographies of communities especially in Venezuela with comparative data from communities in Brazil. Early and Peters discuss population dynamics of the Mucajai Yanoama in Brazil from the late 1950s to 1987

Abstract: The Aymara live in the Bolivian and Peruvian altiplano, centering around Lake Titicaca. This file consists of 16 documents covering the time period from 1860 through 1980. Tschopik and Buechler present comprehensive surveys of Aymara history and culture. A second work by Tschopik focuses on magical beliefs. LaBarre's writings include a general ethnography and articles covering the classification and use of potatoes, folktales, remedies, and sorcery. Forbes describes the area, material culture, and anthropometry. Chervin incorporates previously unpublished data on living facilities and livelihood from the early 1900s and data on physical anthropology. Metraux presents data concerning the religious practices and beliefs of the Aymara living in the province of Carangas, Bolivia. Bouroncle Carreon was a physician who presents a comprehensive study of the Aymara in the Department of Puno. Carter has written a functional study of cultural differences between the hacienda and the free community system. Other topics included in this file are ceremonies, magic, divination and acculturation, dreams, the soul, death, funeral customs, and eschatology, and a particular process of Aymara market participation in southern Peru, in which peasants travel long distances to produce coffee for sale

Abstract: The Iban are an indigenous group in Sarawak, a state of Malaysia, on the island of Borneo. This file on the Iban consists of 35 documents. The dates covered by the literature are from ca. 1840-1990. Predominant themes are agriculture (primarily rice cultivation), culture history, migrations, religion, and warfare (including much information on head-hunting). The works of Freeman, one of the outstanding modern authorities on the Iban, used in conjunction with the earlier descriptive accounts of Low, Howell, and Gomes, and supplemented by the more recent ethnographies of Pringle, Sutlive, Wagner, Benedict Sandin, and Padoch, provide a good overall view of Iban culture and society

Abstract: This is an English-language collection of essays on modern German history with a generational theme, first published in 1995. It addresses, first, the extraordinary power and persistence of a German tradition of youthful rebellion extending from the Sturm und Drang in the eighteenth century to the student revolts of 1968 and, second, the impact of the dramatic ruptures and discontinuities in modern German history on the formation and interaction of successive historical cohorts. Using a variety of different approaches, including literacy and oral history, the collection pays particular attention to the way generational identities interacted with those of class and gender. The book adds to our understanding of generations, of the balance between continuity and discontinuity in modern German history, of the generational roots of National Socialism and the Hitler Youth generation's impact on East and West German society.

Abstract: In this book, Phyllis Martin, a well-known Africanist scholar, opens up a whole new field of African research: the leisure activities of urban Africans. Her comprehensive study, set in colonial Brazzaville and based on a wide variety of written sources and interviews, investigates recreational activities from football and fashion to music, dance and night life. In it, she brings out the ways in which these activities built social networks, humanised daily life and forged new identities, and explains how they ultimately helped to remake older traditions and values with new cultural forms

Abstract: Die Konstanzer Historikerin (vgl. auch BA 8/86, ID 27/91) interpretiert den Geschlechterbegriff in der Neuzeit. (3)

Abstract: Land tenure arrangements are intimately linked with the organization of society, the economy, political structures and geography. In the South Pacific Islands the majority of land is held by community groups under 'customary' or 'traditional' forms of tenure. This book argues that land formerly held in common is now often controlled and used exclusively by individuals or nuclear families - it is being privatized. Detailed case studies demonstrate these trends in Western Samoa, Tonga, Vanuatu and Fiji. Parallels are noted from Asia, Europe and Africa, where comparable forces of commercialization, individualization and socio-political change have brought comparable results. The denial of these trends by policy makers in the region reflects an interest in maintaining the image of traditionalism and its associated status and power. The divergence between rhetoric and reality creates dilemmas for many Pacific Islanders and their leaders.

In it, she brings out the ways in which these activities built social networks, humanised daily life and forged new identities, and explains how they ultimately helped to remake older traditions and values with new cultural forms.

Abstract: In an historical account of the growth and development of the field of cognitive anthropology, Roy D'Andrade examines how cultural knowledge is organised within and between human minds. He begins by examining the research carried out during the l950s and l960s which was concerned with how different cultures classify kinship relationships and the natural environment, and then traces the development of more complex and sophisticated cognitive theories of classification in anthropology which took place in the l970s and l980s. In an analysis of more recent developments, the author considers work involving cultural models, emotion, motivation and action. He concludes with a summary of the theoretical perspective of cognitive anthropology.

Abstract: This volume contains a collection of studies describing and analyzing stereotypes of women in the religions of Ancient Israel and Mesopotamia, and in Zoroastrianism, Judaism, Medieval Christianity, Islam, Indian Sufism, Hinduism, Buddhism, Tibetan religions, and modern Neopaganism. In all these traditions the stereotypes are based on generalizations, which are socially, culturally or religiously legitimized, and which seem to have a lasting influence on society's conceptions of women. They represent oversimplified opinions, which are, however, regularly challenged by the women who are affected by them. In all traditions the stereotypes are ambiguous, either because women have challenged their validity, or because historical developments in society have reshaped them. They influence public opinion by emphasizing dominant views, as a strategy to restrain women and to keep them controlled by the rules and morals of a male-dominated society

Abstract: Cultural Politics at the Fin de Siècle scrutinises ways in which current conflicts of 'race', class, and gender have their origins in the cultural politics of the last fin de siècle, whose influence stretched from the 1890s, when economic depression signalled the end of Britain's role as 'the workshop of the world', to 1914 when world war accelerated imperial decline. This collaborative venture by new and established scholars includes discussion of the 'New Woman', the reconstruction of masculinities, and of feminism and empire. The imperialist theme is pursued in essays on Yeats and Ireland, Gilbert and Sullivan, and the figure of the vampire. The rise of socialism and psychoanalysis, and the relationship between nascent modernism and late twentieth-century postmodernism are also addressed in this radical account.

Abstract: The domestic unit is inseparable from its homestead, and the 'house', at once a physical place and a social unit, is often also a unit of production and consumption, a cult group, and even a political faction. Inspired by Lévi-Strauss's suggestion that the multi-functional noble houses of medieval Europe were simply the best-known examples of a widespread social institution, the contributors to this collection analyse 'house' systems in Southeast Asia and South America, exploring the interrelationships between buildings, people, and ideas. They reveal some of the ways in which houses can stand for social groups and serve as images of process and order.

Abstract: During the 1920s much attention was paid to the history of Jews in Germany since the Enlightenment and the subject became popular again, with renewed emphasis, after 1945. Many historians were deeply committed to understanding and explaining the tragic path that led from the emancipation of the Jews to the Holocaust. For a long time, much less work was done on the history of Jews in Germany in earlier periods, particularly the period between the late Middle Ages and the Enlightenment. This book is the first comprehensive account of Jewish-Gentile relations in central Europe from the fifteenth to the eighteenth century. It lays particular emphasis on cultural, economic, social, and political issues, and incorporates much new research

Abstract: Using as his example post-World War I Italy and the government's interest in the size, growth rate, and "vitality" of its national population, David Horn suggests a genealogy for our present understanding of procreation as a site for technological intervention and political contestation. Social Bodies looks at how population and reproductive bodies came to be the objects of new sciences, technologies, and government policies during this period. It examines the linked scientific constructions of Italian society as a body threatened by the "disease" of infertility, and of women and men as social bodies--located neither in nature nor in the private sphere, but in that modern domain of knowledge and intervention carved out by statistics, sociology, social hygiene, and social work.Situated at the intersection of anthropology, cultural studies, and feminist studies of science, the book explores the interrelated factors that produced the practices of reason we call social science and social planning. David Horn draws on many sources to analyze the discourses and practices of "social experts," the resistance these encountered, and the often unintended effects of the new objectification of bodies and populations. He shows how science, while affirming that maternity was part of woman's "nature," also worked to remove reproduction from the domain of the natural, making it an object of technological intervention. This reconstitution of bodies through the sciences and technologies of the social, Horn argues, continues to have material consequences for women and men throughout the West

Abstract: Jack Goody's book explores the development of the discipline of social anthropology through its key practitioners and how far its concerns interacted with the political and ideological debate of the interwar years. It is a study of the different ideological and intellectual approaches adopted by the emerging subject of social anthropology and how far these views were incorporated into and defined by the structures and institutions in which they developed. However it is also an analysis of how far the subject was created by its own response to key issues of the time: colonialism - specifically Africa, anti-Semitism and communism. Goody's approach is characteristically personal: Malinowski dominates the discussion, as well as Fortes, Radcliffe-Brown and Evans-Pritchard, and his own experience, gathered over a wide-ranging life of fieldwork informs the conclusion of the book.

Abstract: The Vezo, a fishing people of western Madagascar, are known as 'the people who struggle with the sea'. Dr Astuti explores their identity showing that it is established through what people do rather than being determined by descent. Vezo identity is a 'way of doing' rather than a 'state of being', performative rather than ethnic. However, her innovative analysis of Vezo kinship also uncovers an opposite form of identity based on descent, which she argues is the identity of the dead. By looking at key mortuary rituals that engage the relationship between the living and the dead, Dr Astuti develops a dual model of the Vezo person: the one defined contextually in the present, the other determined by the past.

He concludes with a summary of the theoretical perspective of cognitive anthropology

Abstract: Children in the Taiwanese fishing community of Angang have their attention drawn, consciously and unconsciously, to various forms of identification through their participation in schooling, family life and popular religion. They read texts about 'virtuous mothers', share 'meaningful foods' with other villagers, visit the altars of 'divining children' and participate in 'dangerous' god-strengthening rituals. In particular they learn about the family-based cycle of reciprocity, and the tension between this and commitment to the nation. Charles Stafford's 1995 study of childhood in this community (with additional material from north-eastern mainland China) explores absorbing issues related to nurturance, education, family, kinship and society in its analysis of how children learn, or do not learn, to identify themselves as both familial and Chinese.

Abstract: Hahn begins by developing a definition of sickness that is based on the patient's perception of suffering and disturbance rather than on the physician's assessment of biomedical signs. After reviewing the principal theories that account for the forms of sickness and healing found in different historical and cultural contexts, he explores the relevance of both anthropological and epidemiological approaches to sickness, focusing on the persistent gap between white and black infant mortality in the United States. Hahn then describes contemporary Western medicine as it might be seen by a visiting foreign anthropologist
Abstract: He describes the culture of Western medicine and portrays the world of one physician at work, traces the evolution of obstetrics since 1903 by analyzing the principal textbook - Williams Obstetrics - through its first eighteen editions, and explores the gulf between physicians and their patients by examining the accounts of physicians who have written about their own sicknesses. He concludes by proposing ways that some of the ills of contemporary Western medicine might be remedied by applying anthropological principles to medical training and practice
Abstract: The ways in which people respond to sickness differ greatly from society to society. In this book anthropologist and epidemiologist Robert A. Hahn examines how Western and non-Western cultures influence the definition, experience, and treatment of sickness

Abstract: In British and American representations of girlhood during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, adolescent girls were viewed both as figures of adornment and as creatures in need of refuge, rescue, and reform. This engrossing book investigates such portrayals of girlhood by analyzing children's and adult's literature, conduct manuals, religious tracts, institutions for wayward girls, as well as social practices and phenomena, including the dowry system and the domestic science movement. Employing the methods of feminist theory and cultural studies, Lynne Vallone examines the historical and social production of girls' culture in Britain and America - from eighteenth-century English asylums for penitent prostitutes and rescue homes in late nineteenth-century America to such social and legal practices as marriage settlements in which the upper-class girl's "jewel" of chastity enhanced her bride-price. Vallone's study also brings new insights to a wide range of literature concerning female adolescence, offering in-depth readings of Pamela and Little Women, as well as works by Jane Austen, Frances Burney, Sarah Fielding, and Hannah More
