Keywords: Black Carib Indians ; Garifuna ; Garifuna
Abstract: This collection of 22 documents describe the Garifuna, also called Black Caribs, who live on the Caribbean coast of Nicaragua, Honduras and Belize. The time period covered is from 1000 to 2000. Fieldwork covers a time span of almost 50 years from 1947 to 1993. Nine of the documents are doctoral dissertations. Basic ethnographies are provided by Taylor, Coelho, and Munroe. Historical perspectives of Garifuna cultural formation are provided by Gonzalez and Gullick. Four articles examine ethnic relations with respect to language use and mating/marital patterns. The Garifuna practice of couvade has been a focus of anthropological inquiry, beginning with Munroe. Chernela reinterprets the meaning of the couvade as practiced by the Garifuna. Coe and Anderson survey the region's ethnobotany. Palacio examines the Garifuna food exchange system and more specifically looks at the relationships between food sharing and fosterage, and age and residence patterns. Other topics covered include language shift in relation to new class formation and ethnic identity, gender roles, women's role in social organization, the control of young women's sexual behavior by older women, ethnomedicine, folk songs, and spirit possession

Keywords: Badaga (Indic people) ; Bevölkerung ; Badaga ; Badaga ; Bevölkerung
Abstract: This collection of 10 documents is about the Badaga and covers the period from 1550 to the 1990s. The Badagas are the largest community in the Nilgiri Hills at the junction of Kerala, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu states in southern India. Paul Hockings authored eight of these documents, and his work covers Badaga culture from the first contact with Europeans in the early 1800s up to 1995. His strengths are a thorough analysis of social organization and structure, including kinship, marriage and their associated rituals. Two early sources (Thurston 1909, and Sastri 1891-1892) provide overviews of selected aspects of Badaga society and culture

Abstract: This collection of 14 documents describes the Manus people during the period from 1870 to 1992, with a concentration on the 1920s. The Manus are residents of the Papua New Guinea province of Manus. The American anthropologist Margaret Mead (1901-1978) conducted fieldwork on the island from 1928-1929 and again in 1953. This collection contains several her works, including her main monographs on personality development and a follow-up study, 25 years later, on the same subject. The other works by Mead in this collection focus on kinship, animism and children's thought, trade and exchange, and a general introduction to Manus culture and society. Fortune wrote on the Manus religion. Carrier and Schwartz wrote on the Manus economy. Gustafsson wrote his doctoral dissertation on Manus leadership. Otto examines the life of one particular leader, Paliau Maloat, and the history of the movement he led. Romanucci-Ross examines Manus medical treatment

Abstract: People's identities are addressed and brought into being by interaction with others. Identity processes encompass biographical experiences, historical eras and cultural norms in which the self's autonomy varies according to the flux of power relationships with others. Identity Structure Analysis (ISA) draws upon psychological, sociological and social anthropological theory and evidence to formulate a system of concepts that help explain the notion of identity. They can be applied to the practical investigations of identity structure and identity development in a number of clinical, societal and cultural settings. This book includes topics on national and ethnic identification in multicultural contexts and gender identity relating to social context and the urban environment. Clinical applications that describe identity processes associated with psychological distress are also examined. These include anorexia nervosa and vicarious traumatisation of counsellors in the aftermath of atrocity. Analysing Identity is unique in its development of this integrative conceptualisation of self and identity, and its operationalisation in practice. This innovative book will appeal to academics and professionals in developmental, social, cross-cultural, clinical and educational psychology and psychotherapy. It will also be of interest to those involved with sociology, political science, gender studies, ethnic studies and social policy. Of particular note is the availability of new software, Ipseus, which facilitates ISA for use by practitioners. It enables them to enhance their professional skills by ascertaining their clients’ perspectives on self as located in the social world. This has been successfully used with pre-school three to five year-old children, and all other age-ranges through childhood, adolescence and adulthood. Ipseus is designed to be used in inter-cultural contexts and appeals to practitioners for their input for the generation of customized identity instruments (see www.identityexploration.com).

Abstract: This fully revised and updated second edition of Understanding Digital Libraries focuses on the challenges faced by both librarians and computer scientists in a field that has been dramatically altered by the growth of the Web. At every turn, the goal is practical: to show you how things you might need to do are already being done, or how they can be done. The first part of the book is devoted to technology and examines issues such as varying media requirements, indexing and classification, networks and distribution, and presentation. The second part of the book is concerned with the human contexts in which digital libraries function. Here you’ll find specific and useful information on usability, preservation, scientific applications, and thorny legal and economic questions. Thoroughly updated and expanded from original edition to include recent research, case studies and new technologies For librarians and technologists alike, this book provides a thorough introduction to the interdisciplinary science of digital libraries Written by Michael Lesk, a legend in computer science and a leading figure in the digital library field Provides insights into the integration of both the technical and non-technical aspects of digital libraries

Abstract: Most organizations are stuck in a rut. On one hand, they understand all the good things that will come with growth. On the other, they're petrified that growth means change, and change means risk, and risk means death. Nobody wants to screw up and ruin a good thing, so most companies (and individuals) just keep trying to be perfect at the things they've always done. In 2003, Seth Godin's Purple Cow challenged organizations to become remarkable-to drive growth by standing out in a world full of brown cows. It struck a huge chord and stayed on the Business Week bestseller list for nearly two years. You can hear countless brainstorming meetings where people refer to purple cows and say things like, "That's not good enough. We need to create a big moo!" But how do you create a big moo-an insight so astounding that people can't help but remark on it, like digital TV recording (TiVo) or overnight shipping (FedEx), or the world's best vacuum cleaner (Dyson)? Godin worked with thirty-two of the world's smartest thinkers to answer this critical question. And the team-with the likes of Tom Peters, Malcolm Gladwell, Guy Kawasaki, Mark Cuban, Robyn Waters, Dave Balter, Red Maxwell, and Randall Rothenberg on board- created an incredibly useful book that's fun to read and perfect for groups to share, discuss, and apply. The Big Moo is a simple book in the tradition of Fish and Don't Sweat the Small Stuff. Instead of lecturing you, it tells stories that stick to your ribs and light your fire. It will help you to create a culture that consistently delivers remarkable innovations.

Abstract: The idea that knowing and doing should be tightly linked may seem like a management no-brainer. But progress in putting learning more directly on the path of work has been slowed by conventional thinking. How can leaders move learning to the places and people where it can most powerfully further the strategy of the company? First, they must put aside old habits and form a new perspective about where the most important learning takes place.

Abstract: While Mac OS X garners all the praise from pundits, and Windows XP attracts all the viruses, Linux is quietly being installed on millions of desktops every year. For programmers and system administrators, business users, and educators, desktop Linux is a breath of fresh air and a needed alternative to other operating systems. The Linux Desktop Pocket Guide is your introduction to using Linux on five of the most popular distributions: Fedora, Gentoo, Mandriva, SUSE, and Ubuntu. Despite what you may have heard, using Linux is not all that hard. Firefox and Konqueror can handle all your web browsing needs; GAIM and Kopete allow you to chat with your friends on the AOL, MSN, and Yahoo! networks; and the email programs Evolution and Kontact provide the same functionality as Microsoft Outlook, with none of the cost. All of these programs run within the beautiful, feature-packed, and easy-to-use GNOME or KDE desktop environments. No operating system truly "just works," and Linux is no exception. Although Linux is capable of running on most any computing hardware that Microsoft Windows can use, you sometimes need to tweak it just a little to make it work the way you really want. To help you with this task, Linux Desktop Pocket Guide covers essential topics, such as configuring your video card, screen resolution, sound, and wireless networking. And laptop users are not left out--an entire section is devoted to the laptop issues of battery life, sleep, and hibernate modes.

Abstract: IBM and Microsoft are strong supporters of the Web Services Interoperability Organization’s (WS-I) efforts to make building solutions using software from different suppliers a reality. In this IBM Redbooks publication, we take a practical look at building a solution with IBM WebSphere and Microsoft .Net components using Web services that are compliant with the WS-I organization’s Basic Profile. This book is aimed at customers who want to know how far the reality of Web services has caught up with the hype; it is for customers who want a book to help them decide whether Web services are right for them now. The book provides an introduction to SOAP, WSDL and the rest of the Web services concepts. It provides a review of the many Web service specifications. Which ones are most important to building a practical solution? We use a scenario based on work IBM has been doing with the insurance industry to demonstrate how to design a service-based solution and then implement it using the latest programming tools from IBM and Microsoft. Based on our experience, we identify areas where extra effort up front will be rewarded with an easier implementation. Please note that the additional material referenced in the text is not available from IBM.

Abstract: More and more businesses today have their receive phone service through Internet instead of local phone company lines. Many businesses are also using their internal local and wide-area network infrastructure to replace legacy enterprise telephone networks. This migration to a single network carrying voice and data is called convergence, and it's revolutionizing the world of telecommunications by slashing costs and empowering users. The technology of families driving this convergence is called VoIP, or Voice over IP. VoIP has advanced Internet-based telephony to a viable solution, piquing the interest of companies small and large. The primary reason for migrating to VoIP is cost, as it equalizes the costs of long distance calls, local calls, and e-mails to fractions of a penny per use. But the real enterprise turn-on is how VoIP empowers businesses to mold and customize telecom and datacom solutions using a single, cohesive networking platform. These business drivers are so compelling that legacy telephony is going the way of the dinosaur, yielding to Voice over IP as the dominant enterprise communications paradigm. Developed from real-world experience by a senior developer, O'Reilly's Switching to VoIP provides solutions for the most common VoIP migration challenges. So if you're a network professional who is migrating from a traditional telephony system to a modern, feature-rich network, this book is a must-have. You'll discover the strengths and weaknesses of circuit-switched and packet-switched networks, how VoIP systems impact network infrastructure, as well as solutions for common challenges involved with IP voice migrations. Among the challenges discussed and projects presented: building a softPBX configuring IP phones ensuring quality of service scalability standards-compliance topological considerations coordinating a complete system ?switchover? migrating applications like voicemail and directory services retro-interfacing to traditional telephony supporting mobile users security and survivability dealing with the challenges of NAT To help you grasp the core principles at work, Switching to VoIP uses a combination of strategy and hands-on "how-to" that introduce VoIP routers and media gateways, various makes of IP telephone equipment, legacy analog phones, IPTables and Linux firewalls, and the Asterisk open source PBX software by Digium. You'll learn how to build an IP-based or legacy-compatible phone system and voicemail system compl...

Abstract: Network Security is a comprehensive resource written for anyone who plans or implements network security measures, including managers and practitioners. It offers a valuable dual perspective on security: how your network looks to hackers who want to get inside, and how you need to approach it on the inside to keep them at bay. You get all the hands-on technical advice you need to succeed, but also higher-level administrative guidance for developing an effective security policy. There may be no such thing as absolute security, but, as the author clearly demonstrates, there is a huge difference between the protection offered by routine reliance on third-party products and what you can achieve by actively making informed decisions. You’ll learn to do just that with this book’s assessments of the risks, rewards, and trade-offs related implementing security measures. Helps you see through a hacker's eyes so you can make your network more secure. Provides technical advice that can be applied in any environment, on any platform, including help with intrusion detection systems, firewalls, encryption, anti-virus software, and digital certificates. Emphasizes a wide range of administrative considerations, including security policies, user management, and control of services and devices. Covers techniques for enhancing the physical security of your systems and network. Explains how hackers use information-gathering to find and exploit security flaws. Examines the most effective ways to prevent hackers from gaining root access to a server. Addresses Denial of Service attacks, "malware," and spoofing. Includes appendices covering the TCP/IP protocol stack, well-known ports, and reliable sources for security warnings and updates.

Abstract: Linux consistently appears high up in the list of popular Internet servers, whether it's for the Web, anonymous FTP, or general services such as DNS and delivering mail. But security is the foremost concern of anyone providing such a service. Any server experiences casual probe attempts dozens of time a day, and serious break-in attempts with some frequency as well. This highly regarded book, originally titled Building Secure Servers with Linux , combines practical advice with a firm knowledge of the technical tools needed to ensure security. The book focuses on the most common use of Linux--as a hub offering services to an organization or the Internet--and shows readers how to harden their hosts against attacks. An all-inclusive resource for Linux users who wish to harden their systems, Linux Server Security covers general security such as intrusion detection and firewalling a hub, as well as key services such as DNS, the Apache Web server, mail, and secure shell. Author Michael D. Bauer, a security consultant, network architect, and lead author of the popular Paranoid Penguin column in the Linux Journal , carefully outlines the security risks, defines precautions that can minimize those risks, and offers recipes for robust security. He is joined on several chapters by administrator and developer Bill Lubanovic. A number of new security topics have been added for this edition, including: Database security, with a focus on MySQL Using OpenLDAP for authentication An introduction to email encryption The Cyrus IMAP service, a popular mail delivery agent The vsftpd FTP server Geared toward Linux users with little security expertise, the author explains security concepts and techniques in clear language, beginning with the fundamentals. Linux Server Security with Linux provides a unique balance of "big picture" principles that transcend specific software packages and version numbers, and very clear procedures on securing some of those software packages on several popular distributions. With this book in hand, you'll have both the expertise and the tools to comprehensively secure your Linux system.

Abstract: Wireless networking is poised to have a massive impact on communications, and the 802.11 standard is to wireless networking what Ethernet is to wired networking. There are already over 50 million devices using the dominant IEEE 802.11 (essentially wireless Ethernet) standard, with astronomical growth predicted over the next 10 years. New applications are emerging every day, with wireless capability being embedded in everything from electric meters to hospital patient tracking systems to security devices. This practical reference guides readers through the wireless technology forest, giving them the knowledge, the hardware and the software necessary to design a wireless embedded device rapidly, inexpensively, and effectively. Using off-the-shelf microcontrollers from Microchip and Atmel, the author provides step-by-step instructions for designing the hardware and firmware for a fully operational wireless networking device. The book gives a thorough introduction to 802.11 technology and puts it into perspective against the other wireless standard options. Just enough theory and mathematics is provided to give the depth of understanding needed for practical design work. The book thoroughly covers: * Laptop wireless Ethernet card introduction and theory *Introduction to CompactFlash-to-microcontroller interfacing * Implementing the laptop wireless Ethernet card in an embedded environment Covers the hottest new embedded market area- wireless networking Shows designers how to save money and time by using microcontrollers in their embedded wireless designs instead of expensive, complex prefab boards

Abstract: This IBM Redbooks publication describes a sample implementation of a complex solution that addresses a key challenge being faced by many enterprises today. Document and record management has always been a difficult (and often manual) process. Enterprises need to address this challenge, not only to make their business, employees, partners, and customers more efficient, but also to comply with ever-increasing regulations. Addressing these requirements demands a flexible solution that can be integrated with current and future IT systems and applications. It is also critical that it is driven through controllable and automated business processes. This book describes a sample solution that integrates IBM DB2 Records Manager, IBM DB2 Content Manager, IBM WebSphere Application Server Enterprise Process Choreographer, IBM WebSphere Portal, IBM Tivoli Directory Server, and other software to provide a prototype solution. Though basic in its function, the solution and the steps to implement it can be used to help architects, IT specialists, and developers get started in creating a solution addressing their enterprise-specific requirements.

Abstract: Increasing workforce diversity has become an inevitable fact of organizational life, but it is still unclear whether this increasing diversity has a positive or negative effect on organizational performance. Leaders seeking to manage diversity effectively should consider research findings that suggest that when the tasks to be performed are complex, diverse workgroups produce more creative and innovative solutions and achieve better results than workgroups that are more homogeneous; for less complicated tasks, however, the complex dynamics of a highly diverse workgroup can actually hinder the work process and lower performance.

Abstract: This book is about software piracy--what it is and how it's done. Stealing software is not to be condoned, and theft of intellectual property and copyright infringement are serious matters, but it's totally unrealistic to pretend that it doesn't happen. Software piracy has reached epidemic proportions. Many computer users know this, the software companies know this, and once you've read the Introduction to this book, you'll understand why. Seeing how widespread software piracy is, learning how it's accomplished, and particularly how incredibly easy it is to do might surprise you. This book describes how software piracy is actually being carried out. This book is about software piracy--what it is and how it's done This is the first book ever to describe how software is actually stolen and traded over the internet Discusses security implications resulting from over 1/2 of the internet's computers running illegal, unpatched, pirated software

Abstract: Call it a control thing, but until recently–or, more specifically, until the availability of digital raw camera formats–you simply weren’t ready to make the move to digital photography. Raw formats, however, changed all of that by allowing you to retrieve images before any in-camera processing has been performed. Photoshop’s Adobe Camera Raw plug-in makes that process even easier by providing a standardized way of accessing and working with these uncompressed digital negatives in your favorite image-manipulation software. In the first volume devoted exclusively to the topic, best-selling author Bruce Fraser shows you how to take advantage of Adobe Camera Raw to set white balance, optimize contrast and saturation, handle noise, correct tint, and recover lost detail in images before converting them to another format. After learning about the raw formats themselves, you’ll discover hands-on techniques for exposing and shooting for digital raw, using Bridge, Adobe’s new standalone file browser, to preview images and automate tasks, and building a workflow around the digital raw process.

Abstract: In 1978 IBM introduced the System/38 as part of its midrange platform hardware base. One of the many outstanding features of this system was the built-in Relational Database Management System (RDMS) support. The system included a utility for defining databases, screens, and reports. This utility used a form named Data Description Specifications (DDS) to define the database physical (PF) and logical (LF) files (base tables, views, and indexes). In 1988, IBM announced the AS/400. The OS/400 operating system also contained a built-in RDMS, however, IBM offered Structured Query Language (SQL) as an alternative to DDS for creating databases. In addition, SQL Data Manipulation Language (DML) statements were made available as an ad hoc query language tool. These statements could also be embedded and compiled within high level language (HLL) programs. SQL Data Definition Language (DDL) has become the industry standard for defining RDMS databases. Many customers are in the process of modernizing their database definition and the database access. This IBM Redbooks publication will help you understand how to reverse engineer a DDS-created database along, and provides you with tips and techniques for modernizing applications to use SQL as the database access method. Abstract: While what you create using your computer is a unique expression of who you are, how you use your computer probably isn't. Nearly every Windows XP user follows the same Start menu path to launch programs, uses the same standard techniques in programs like Windows Explorer and Outlook Express, and performs the same customizations that don't go much beyond changing the wallpaper. However, there are those of us who qualify as the "post-novice" user, who think that doing things the "official" way is too slow, less efficient and less powerful than there is potential for with Windows XP. Microsoft Windows XP Unleashed will take you beyond the standard-issue default settings and program wizards to shortcuts, new customization techniques, workarounds for common problems, and warnings on how to avoid the pitfalls of Windows XP, including those associated with Service Pack 2. Along the way, you'll learn about all kinds of insider details, undocumented features, powerful tools, and background facts that help put everything about Windows XP into perspective.

Abstract: Recently, the adoption of Linux as a platform for business-critical applications has increased significantly. This evolution has also introduced requirements and technologies that were previously not seen in a Linux environment. Messaging and integration products, such as WebSphere MQ and WebSphere BI Message Broker, can now be used on Linux to solve integration problems that include Linux platforms. This IBM Redbooks publication starts with an introduction of messaging and integration technologies to Linux users. It also introduces the world of Linux to people that are familiar with messaging and integration technologies on other platforms. This book ends with a discussion of a few monitoring techniques that can be implemented in a Linux environment, so that a messaging solution can be monitored. Abstract: There may be several different reasons why you want to read this book. Perhaps you are currently experiencing a performance issue with an application. Or, you may be designing and developing a new application that you want to deploy on the IBM WebSphere Application Server running on the IBM eServer iSeries server. This IBM Redbooks publication helps you to gain a solid understanding of the factors that can affect the performance of the Java and WebSphere applications running on the iSeries server. As a deployment platform, the iSeries architecture combined with Java and the WebSphere Application Server provides a robust execution environment, which is ideal for the mission-critical business applications and Web sites. This book explains how to tune the iSeries server for IBM WebSphere Application Server. The book is divided into several logical tuning tasks, such as tuning the Java virtual machine. You can study each of these logical blocks and apply them independently from other tasks. But, to achieve optimum performance on the system, we recommend that you use the systematic approach that is shown in this book. This book is written for the system administrators, application developers, and I/T consultants who are already familiar with WebSphere Application Server and work management topics for the iSeries server.

Abstract: MS/VCR provides a fast, reliable facility with high integrity for the renaming and recataloging of data sets on target volumes after a FlashCopy or Snapshot volume copy, solving the cloned data access dilemma. This facility enables the immediate use of the data from the same system as the original copy. MS/VCR resolves catalog conflicts of like-named datasets that are created by "cloning" a volume. It also solves internal conflicts that are created when copying a volume to a different VOLSER. MS/VCR is designed to rename and catalog target volume datasets in record time. The window of time required to copy and rename a target dataset is a critical factor for many customers. This IBM Redbooks publication provides a broad understanding of the MS/VCR product and how to use it in real situations.

Abstract: A decade ago, the corporate world viewed grid computing as a curiosity. Today, it views it as an opportunity--a chance to reduce costs, improve performance, fund new projects, and take advantage of under-utilized capacity. The engineering behind this transformation has been amply documented. Until now, however, little has been written to prepare managers, executives, and other decision-makers to implement grid computing in a sensible and effective way. Grid Computing: The Savvy Manager's Guide examines the technology from a rigorous business perspective, equipping you with the practical knowledge you need to assess your options and determine what grid computing approach is right for your enterprise. This book is heavy on real-world experience, distilling from a rich assortment of case studies the best practices currently at work in a variety of industries. Always attentive to grid computing’s many competitive advantages, it is also realistic about the challenges of selling the idea to staff and making it a part of your company’s culture. Sketches the history of grid computing, showing how it made the leap from academia to business. Examines the criteria you'll need to meet to make your network "grid-enabled." Explains how a grid-based solution can be made to meet key organizational requirements, including security, scheduling, data storage, and fault-tolerance. Surveys the approaches currently available and helps you choose the one that will best meet your needs, both now and in the future. Focuses heavily on the competitive advantages you can reap from grid computing, and provides advice on convincing your organization to adopt grid computing and making a successful transition.

Abstract: This IBM Redbooks publication is primarily intended for use by IBM Clients and IBM Business Partners. The current direction in the Business Intelligence marketplace is towards data mart consolidation. Originally data marts were built for many different reasons, such as departmental or organizational control, faster query response times, easier and faster to design and build, and fast payback. However, data marts did not always provide the best solution when it came to viewing the business enterprise as a whole. They provide benefits to the department or organization to whom they belong, but typically do not give management the information they need to efficiently and effectively run the business. In many cases the data marts led to the creation of departmental or organizational data silos (non-integrated sources of data). That is, information was available to the particular department or organization, but was not integrated across all the department’s or organizations. Worse yet, many data marts were built without concern for the others. This led to inconsistent definitions of the data, inconsistent collection of data, inconsistent collection times for the data, and so on. The result was an inconsistent picture of the business for management, and an inability for good business performance management. The solution is to consolidate those data silos to provide management the information they need.

Abstract: This IBM Redbooks publication will help you design a solution to migrate an application from the Common Connector Framework (CCF) to the J2EE Connector Architecture (J2CA). As CCF is phased out and the new technology replaces it, customers will find that migration must be planned and executed carefully. The idea behind this book is to show the architectural differences between the two technologies and help with planning and executing a smooth migration. We show the routes, either automatic or manual migration, and document the tools and tricks that can be used to perform the migration. The automatic migration tool used in this book is the CCF Migration Assistant (CMA) developed by IBM to help customers in their migration efforts. In both cases, automatic and manual, certain preparation and post-processing steps must be performed, and we also show how to accomplish them. We also include a chapter about migrating a real-life application using the tools and ideas listed in the other chapters of the book. The book is an extension of the original Redpaper REDP-3784, published in 2003.

Abstract: Current Sources and Voltage References provides fixed, well-regulated levels of current or voltage within a circuit. These are two of the most important “building blocks “ of analog circuits, and are typically used in creating most analog IC designs. Part 1 shows the reader how current sources are created, how they can be optimized, and how they can be utilized by the OEM circuit designer. The book serves as a “must-have reference for the successful development of precision circuit applications. It shows practical examples using either BJTs, FETs, precision op amps, or even matched CMOS arrays being used to create highly accurate current source designs, ranging from nanoAmps to Amps. In each chapter the most important characteristics of the particular semiconductor type being studied are carefully reviewed. This not only serves as a helpful refresher for experienced engineers, but also as a good foundation for all EE student coursework, and includes device models and relevant equations. Part 2 focuses on semiconductor voltage references, from their design to their various practical enhancements. It ranges from the simple Zener diode to today’s most advanced topologies, including Analog Devices’ XFET® and Intersil’s FGA™ (invented while this book was being written). Over 300 applications and circuit diagrams are shown throughout this easy-to-read, practical reference book. * Discusses how to design low-noise, precision current sources using matched transistor pairs. * Explains the design of high power current sources with power MOSFETs * Gives proven techniques to reduce drift and improve accuracy in voltage references.

Abstract: Over the last few years, Linux has grown both as an operating system and a tool for personal and business use. Simultaneously becoming more user friendly and more powerful as a back-end system, Linux has achieved new plateaus: the newer filesystems have solidified, new commands and tools have appeared and become standard, and the desktop--including new desktop environments--have proved to be viable, stable, and readily accessible to even those who don't consider themselves computer gurus. Whether you're using Linux for personal software projects, for a small office or home office (often termed the SOHO environment), to provide services to a small group of colleagues, or to administer a site responsible for millions of email and web connections each day, you need quick access to information on a wide range of tools. This book covers all aspects of administering and making effective use of Linux systems. Among its topics are booting, package management, and revision control. But foremost in Linux in a Nutshell are the utilities and commands that make Linux one of the most powerful and flexible systems available. Now in its fifth edition, Linux in a Nutshell brings users up-to-date with the current state of Linux. Considered by many to be the most complete and authoritative command reference for Linux available, the book covers all substantial user, programming, administration, and networking commands for the most common Linux distributions. Comprehensive but concise, the fifth edition has been updated to cover new features of major Linux distributions. Configuration information for the rapidly growing commercial network services and community update services is one of the subjects covered for the first time. But that's just the beginning. The book covers editors, shells, and LILO and GRUB boot options. There's also coverage of Apache, Samba, Postfix, sendmail, CVS, Subversion, Emacs, vi, sed, gawk, and much more. Everything that system administrators, developers, and power users need to know about Linux is referenced here, and they will turn to this book again and again.

Abstract: When most people think of word processing, they think of Microsoft Word. After all, it has been around for more than 20 years-practically an eternity in computer time. But Word has also provided its users-nearly everyone on the face of the planet-with an endless supply of annoyances. That is, until now. Word Annoyances offers to the point (and often opinionated) solutions to your most vexing editing, formatting, printing, faxing, and scanning problems. It covers everything from installation and templates to tables, columns, and graphics. For example, learn how to stop Word from searching the Web for help, and how to enter the same text easily in multiple parts of a document-and keep it updated automatically. It also provides a gentle introduction to the power of macros so you can slay your annoyances by the truckload. The fixes will work with most versions of Word, including Word 2000, Word 2002 (also known as Word XP), and Word 2003. Among the topics covered: Deal with installation issues, crashes, and slowdowns, and dispose of the Office Assistant-either temporarily or forever. Master templates, numbering, graphics, hyperlinks, tabs, tables, headers, and other everyday annoyances. Tame some of Word's wiliest features, such as Smart Cut and Paste, Click and Type, Mail Merge, AutoCorrect, and AutoText. Printing, Faxing, and Scanning-need we say more? Learn to output and distribute your documents with confidence. Need to work with other Microsoft applications or Macs? You'll find annoyances dealing with Excel, PowerPoint, and Access, as well as a whole chapter just on Mac Word. About the Author Guy Hart-Davis has been using Microsoft Word for more than 15 years, during which time he has seen its capabilities increase steadily and its annoyances increase exponentially. His other books include Word 2000 Developer's Handbook (Sybex) and How to Do Everything with Your iPod and iPod mini (McGraw-Hill). In this book he shares secrets that will quell calm your colleagues, impress your friends, and confound your enemies.

Abstract: IBM WebSphere Studio Asset Analyzer for Multiplatforms Version 3 Release 1 provides functions for analysts and developers to understand enterprise assets, enhance them, and enable their enterprise applications for their on demand environment. Working applications can be an IS organization's biggest asset. Reusing application constructs helps accelerate application development through the life cycle by requiring less new code and reusing previously tested code. WebSphere Studio Asset Analyzer assists IT personnel with the maintenance and extension of existing assets through impact analysis, connector building assistance, and application understanding. It helps enterprise customers modernize their existing enterprise assets and skills for on demand development by providing knowledge about their static environment (finding and reusing application code and the components that connect that code), and their dynamic environment (understanding what code is executing in run-time environments). The book is divided into three parts: Part 1, "Introduction to Websphere Studio Asset Analyzer for Multiplatforms" presents a general overview of WSAA. In this part, we cover what this product is and what it does. We provide you with an introduction to the product by showing you key elements of the Web browser interface. We also describe the roles and responsibilities of the various support personnel and key end-users of the product. Part 2, "Working with WSAA" presents more specific, hands-on information for working with WebSphere Studio Asset Analyzer. In this part we devote one chapter to each of the primary functions associated with the product and provide detailed instructions for how to use the product. These include: -〉 Product administrator functions, which include collecting inventory to load into the database and how to maintain it -〉 Project manager tasks, which include exploring general and detailed aspects of a sample application -〉 Application developer tasks, which include how to use WebSphere Studio Asset Analyzer to make specific changes to an application. Part 3, "Appendixes" contains summary and reference information about the product. Abstract: WebSphere® Business Integration is the IBM® business integration solution for process integration, workforce management, and enterprise application connectivity. WebSphere Business Integration helps you to create and deploy new business processes, synchronize business information in multiple business applications on diverse platforms, and transform message formats en-route between applications. This IBM Redbooks publication takes you through the full life cycle of an adapter development project, from design considerations, building, and testing through deployment and implementation on multiple broker types (using both an out-of-the-box technology adapter and the custom adapter for our development project). For this book, we designed a scenario that mirrors many of the issues that real-life integration projects can face. The scenario starts by integrating custom enterprise applications. It then integrates those applications into the business-to-business world by extending the infrastructure. Finally, it adds a human interaction component which determines whether to take the internal route or external route (via trading partners) to application integration. Using many of the components within the WebSphere Business Integration family of products, this book includes a range of integration options that are available to implement this scenario. Please note that the additional material referenced in the text is not available from IBM.

Abstract: If you've wondered how the InDesign pros get twice the work done in half the time, here's the answer: They know every inside tip, every hidden keyboard shortcut, and every little trick that gives them the edge. They know the fastest, smartest, and most efficient way to do just about everything. In short, they know all the "tricks of the trade." And now, you can too. This book is packed cover-to-cover, wall-to-wall with nothing but those cool little inside tips that can make you faster, better, and have more fun using Adobe InDesign CS2. There are no detailed descriptions on working with hyphenation dictionaries, or long boring discussions on color workflow, it's just tips--short, sweet, and to the point. So why just tips? When we (you, me, etc.) look at books, if we see the word "Tip" we're all immediately drawn to it. That's because we know we're about to learn something really cool. Maybe it's an undocumented keyboard shortcut, a hidden inside secret, or just a faster, better way to do something we do every day. The only problem with the tips in these books is there's never enough of 'em. That is, until now. We wanted to create a book that is nothing but these tips, hundreds of tips, but with the added bonus that each tip would have a full color graphic along with it, showing you exactly how it's done. Most importantly, to get in this book they've got to be "Killer Tips." The kind of tip that makes you smile, nod, and then call all your friends and "tune them up" with your new status as InDesign guru. This book is your ticket to working faster and smarter in Adobe InDesign CS2 than you ever thought you could, and best of all, you'll have a blast doing it.

Abstract: Mid-market companies are looking for complete solutions from the solution providers who know their businesses and specialize in a particular solution category such as warehouse management or supply chain integration, within their industry. In order to provide an environment for the business solution, either the solution provider or the end customer must obtain the software needed to run the provider’s application program. This software normally consists of a database, a Web server, and an application server. These components, which are not actually part of the business solution, but are required to support the application program, are called middleware. The process of obtaining, installing, configuring, and supporting the middleware components is a complex process for the solution provider, who currently has to absorb the cost of setting up the environment. The provider has to work with multiple suppliers who have multiple terms and conditions, different license structures, and multiple departments to work with on the contracts and support structures, all of which leads to added infrastructure costs and inefficiency. IBM designed the Express Runtime offering to address the needs of the solution providers serving mid-market customers. The main design criteria were reducing complexity for the providers by offering a pre-integrated and pre-configured middleware solution with a single contract, one license, one set of contracts, and a very competitive price. With Express Runtime, you get WebSphere Application Server - Express, DB2 UDB Express, and IBM HTTP Server with a single install, one contract, and a significantly lower cost compared to purchasing the individual components. Express Runtime includes quick start samples and documentation to get you up and running quickly and easily. Please note that the additional material referenced in the text is not available from IBM.

Abstract: This IBM Redbooks publication is part of a series of documents related to grid computing that IBM is presenting to the IT community to enrich it and all its players: clients, industry leaders, emerging enterprises, universities, and producers of technology. It is mainly oriented to IT architects or those who have the responsibility of analyzing the capabilities of the product used to build a grid solution. We describe the functions of grid computing and the categorizations of the components within it. IBM, ISVs, and open source products will be explained. Some of these products are not specific for grid, but they can be used in a grid computing environment. We hope that this book helps you select functions and products and shows you how grid can fit into your IT picture as new products and services for grid are introduced. Part 1 introduces the concept of grid computing and provides the terminology the readers will use in this book. Part 2 explores the functionality associated with certain products and product families. It also presents some examples of the utilization of these products in the grid computing environment. Part 3 presents grid computing product families that can be used to build a complete grid solution. These bundles, or suites, often implement most of the core grid disciplines. Part 4 gives an overview of the grid computing offerings and services that IBM provides.
