    Abstract: This volume explores some of the many different meanings of community across medieval Eurasia. How did the three 'universal religions, Christianity, Islam and Buddhism, frame the emergence of various types of community under their sway? The studies assembled here in thematic clusters address the terminology of community; genealogies; urban communities; and monasteries or 'enclaves of learning': in particular in early medieval Europe, medieval South Arabia and Tibet, and late medieval Central Europe and Dalmatia. It includes work by medieval historians, social anthropologists, and Asian Studies scholars. The volume present the results of in-depth comparative research from the Visions of Community project in Vienna, and of a dialogue with guests, offering new and exciting perspectives on the emerging field of comparative medieval history

    Abstract: In the research on "The transformation of the Roman world" relatively little attention has been paid to the transformation of early medieval peoples and the development of their communities into kingdoms, and we lack a comparative study on this subject. The aim of this volume is, therefore, to examine the relationship between gens and regnum by systematically comparing the "Germanic" and non-Germanic successor states of the Roman Empire, a question that leads to important results about the role of ethnic processes and of political developments in the formation of the new kingdoms. By trying to answer leading questions, 16 authors (historians, archaeologists and linguists) deal with ten important kingdoms of this period and with their political and legal context (role of the Empire and the law-codes). An introduction to the subject and its inherent problems and a comparative conclusion summarizing the results completes the volume.     Abstract: For many centuries, the acts and destinies of the first-created human beings, Adam and Eve, have intrigued artists, story-tellers and theologians alike. This volume is a collection of articles on these traditions, written by some of the foremost scholars in the field. The volume consists of two parts. In the first part G.A. Anderson and M.E. Stone have combined a number of studies on the rich variety of Adam and Eve-traditions, from the Life of Adam and Eve onwards to late medieval writings in Armenian.     Abstract: Between the fourth and the eight century, a number of 'experimental' polities had to create new forms of legitimacy and organisation to overcome a Roman world based on Empire, city and tribe. In the course of time, a new world developed that relied on Christendom, kingdom and people to pull an increased variety of local communities together. Of these three factors, the ethnic one certainly is the most elusive. This volume discusses the process of construction of ethnic identities. What did names, law, language, costume, burial rites, rhetoric, culture, royal representation or ideology mean, and to whom? This is the question that is common to the papers assembled here. Even though they span several centuries, and a geographic area from the Iberian peninsula to the Black Sea steppes, they all deal with the ways how ethnic distinction became a political factor in the post-Roman world
