    Abstract: For the first time, this volume compiles essays on aspects of the 19th and 20th century history of leisure and consumption in the Silesian metropolis Breslau. How and where did the inhabitants of Breslau spend their leisure time, what athletic activities did they pursue, where did they shop, what cultural offerings did they enjoy? These questions, among others, are the focus of this volume, which uses an interdisciplinary historical approach.

    Abstract: Lange Zeit wurden nostalgische Narrative wegen ihrer Emotionalität und Selektivität als Geschichtsverfälschung gebrandmarkt. Mit dem affective turn wandelt sich das Bild. Im Blick auf die sozialistischen Erfahrungen Mitteleuropas erweist sich Nostalgie als fruchtbare Strategie der Vergangenheitsbewältigung und produktive Kraft im Erinnerungsdiskurs. Mariella C. Gronenthal differenziert den Nostalgiebegriff im Wechselspiel mit Trauma, Identität, Ironie und Utopie aus und erschließt seine Anwendbarkeit für die Literaturwissenschaft. Am Beispiel deutscher und polnischer Erinnerungsromane zeigt sie das erinnerungstheoretische und poetologische Potenzial des Konzepts jenseits von Ostalgiedebatten.

    Abstract: The past may be approached from a variety of directions. A myth provides a sense of direction: it reunites people around certain values and projects and pushes them in one direction or another. The present volume brings together a range of case studies of myth making and myth breaking in east Europe from the nineteenth century to the present day. In particular, it focuses on the complex process through which memories are transformed into myths. This problematic interplay between memory and myth-making is analyzed in conjunction with the role of myths in the political and social life of the region. The essays include cases of forging myths about national pre-history, about the endorsement of nation building by means of historiography, and above all, about communist and post-communist mythologies. The studies shed new light on the creation of local and national identities, as well as the legitimization of ideologies through myth-making. Together, the individual contributions show that myths were often instrumental in the vast projects of social and political mobilization during a period which has witnessed, among others, two world wars and the harsh oppression of the communist regimes.

    Abstract: How did Russian writers respond to linguistic debate in the post-Soviet period?Post-Soviet Russia was a period of linguistic liberalisation, instability and change with varied attempts to regulate and legislate language usage, a time when the language question permeated all spheres of social, cultural and political life. Key topics for debate included the Soviet linguistic legacy, the past and future of Russian, linguistic variation, language policy and linguistic ideologies.     Abstract: This is the first comprehensive study of the language program of the prominent Ukrainian writer and ideologue Pantelejmon Kuliš (1819-1897) whose translations of the Bible and Shakespeare proved most innovative in the formation of literary and the national self-identification of Ukrainians.     Abstract: Ethnographers helped to perceive, to understand and also to shape imperial as well as Soviet Russia's cultural diversity. This volume focuses on the contexts in which ethnographic knowledge was created. Usually, ethnographic findings were superseded by imperial discourse: Defining regions, connecting them with ethnic origins and conceiving national entities necessarily implied the mapping of political and historical hierarchies. But beyond these spatial conceptualizations the essays particularly address the specific conditions in which ethnographic knowledge appeared and changed. On the one hand, they turn to the several fields into which ethnographic knowledge poured and materialized, i.e., history, historiography, anthropology or ideology. On the other, they equally consider the impact of the specific formats, i.e., pictures, maps, atlases, lectures, songs, museums, and exhibitions, on academic as well as non-academic manifestations.

    Abstract: In many ways what is identified today as "cultural globalization" in Eastern Europe has its roots in the Cold War phenomena of samizdat ("do-it-yourself" underground publishing) and tamizdat (publishing abroad). This volume offers a new understanding of how information flowed between East and West during the Cold War, as well as the much broader circulation of cultural products instigated and sustained by these practices. By expanding the definitions of samizdat and tamizdat from explicitly political print publications to include other forms and genres, this volume investigates the wider cultural sphere of alternative and semi-official texts, broadcast media, reproductions of visual art and music, and, in the post-1989 period, new media.     Abstract: This volume includes nine contributions by authors from Bulgaria, Germany, Serbia and the United States and provides innovative interdisciplinary research on the Balkans on the interface of linguistics and anthropology. It has a focus on current phenomena of exile, diaspora, minorities, ethnic groups, and changes in the identity of local communities and individuals as globalization unfolds on the Balkans. This approach adds narrative inquiry, linguistic biographies and sociolinguistics to the new tools for Balkanology. This book deals with numerous aspects of mobility and migration, such as: bi-/multiculturalism, bi-/multilingualism, the relation of mobility to space and time, space as an interacting phenomenon, the problematization of the border, mobility in everyday life of the community and individuals, the relationship of the individual towards the community, migration discourse, the relationship between narration and migration, transnational identities, rituals of separation, rural-urban mobility, the phenomenon of para-urbanity, second and third generation migrants, changes in social networks and the gender aspect of migrations.     Abstract: Untersucht wird die Konzeptualisierung ethnischer und nationaler Identität bei den Russinen in der Bačka und Syrmien und den Ukrainern in Bosnien und Slawonien (später auch in der Vojvodina) im Laufe des 20. Jahrhunderts: Handelt es sich um zwei getrennte Gruppen oder um eine einzige ukrainische Diaspora? Die Konkurrenz religiöser Institutionen wie der griechisch-katholischen und der ukrainisch-orthodoxen Kirche spielte bereits in der Zwischenkriegszeit eine große Rolle, sie setzte sich während des 2. Weltkriegs zwischen Kollaboration mit Hitler-Deutschland und Partisanenwiderstand fort. Im sozialistischen Jugoslawien wurde die Frage nach der Ukrainizität der Russinen ein Teil von Titos Ethnopolitik: Nach dem Bruch mit der Sowjetunion 1948 wurde die Idee des jugoslawischen Russinentums gefördert und die Gruppe 1971 als eigenständige Nationalität anerkannt, während die ukrainische Diaspora im Land weiterhin die Einheit von Russinen und Ukrainern propagierte. Der Band analysiert die Träger minoritärer Identitätsdiskurse und kontextualisiert sie in der jugoslawischen und sowjetischen Minderheitenpolitik. (Dieser Titel als Buch: 6014)

    Abstract: Diese Studie betrachtet die Konfiguration und wechselseitige Hervorbringung von nationalen Selbstverständnissen und Geschlechter- bzw. Sexualitätskonzepten im post-sozialistischen Polen. Aus der Perspektive der politischen Anthropologie werden die sich überlappenden, verschränkten und verknoteten Diskurse, Redeweisen, Referenzrahmen und Aktionen nachgezeichnet, die von unterschiedlichen Akteurinnen und Akteuren innerhalb und außerhalb Polens bestimmt sind. Dabei geht es um die Neuverhandlung nicht nur nationaler Konzepte, sondern auch neuer kultureller Möglichkeitsräume und Subjektivitäten im spannungsreichen Feld von nationaler, europäischer und feministischer Politik.
