    Kurzfassung: The book presents Cognitive Linguistics as a framework for the study of cultural variation in world Englishes and within languages in general by offering a corpus-based analysis of the linguistic realization of the cultural model of community in African English. It also reflects on the role of English in intercultural communication and positions Cognitive Linguistics within a wider hermeneutic tradition.     Kurzfassung: The book is the first of its kind to establish Cognitive Linguistics as a research paradigm within the field of world Englishes. The authors survey the main tenets of both areas of linguistic enquiry and suggest that the theoretical and methodological apparatus developed both within Cognitive Linguistics generally and within its novel sub-discipline Cognitive Sociolinguistics can overcome certain limitations inherent in traditional approaches to cultural variation in language. They present a case study of the linguistic realization of the cultural model of community in African English as an exemplar for the investigation of cultural models in other varieties of English. Corpus-linguistic methods are combined with conceptual metaphor analysis and blending theory to elucidate a vast network of conceptualizations salient to speakers of African English. The findings, based on computer corpora and a range of additional sources, are discussed against the background of work in anthropology, religious studies, and political science. The book also reflects on the role of English in intercultural communication and concludes with a comparison of Cognitive Linguistics and pragmatic functionalism, placing the former in the wider framework of a hermeneutic philosophy that stresses dialogic understanding.

    Kurzfassung: The book presents a discourse analysis of police interrogations involving U.S. Hispanic suspects accused of crimes. The study is unique in that it concentrates on interrogations involving suspects whose first language is not English and police officers who have a rudimentary knowledge of Spanish. It examines the pitfalls of using police officers as interpreters at custodial interrogations. Using an interactional sociolinguistic discourse analytical approach, the book offers a microlinguistic examination of interrogations involving persons accused of murder, child molestation, and kidnapping. Communication difficulties are shown to arise from suspects' limited proficiency in English and police officers' equally limited proficiency in Spanish, coupled with the unwillingness of these officers to remain in interpreter footing. The volume demonstrates how pidginization and asymmetrical communicative accommodation can emerge in such situations of highly unequal power relations. It also demonstrates how cultural factors such as acquiescence to interlocutors of greater authority and higher socioeconomic status can lead persons of certain Latin American backgrounds to engage in ""gratuitous concurrence"", answering ""yes"" to police questions even when it is clear that that these yes-tokens are not truly affirmative responses to those questions. In addition, the book provides evidence of the kinds of abuse that can result from police interrogations that are not electronically recorded. Coerced Confessions reviews appellate cases involving police interpreters spanning a thirty-four-year period, and concludes that the Miranda rights are placed in jeopardy when a police officer is assigned the role of interpreter at a custodial interrogation.

Im Zentrum jeder Seite steht gross der jeweilige Buchstabe, dekorativ ausgeschmückt und in Szene gesetzt mit Figuren, Tieren, Dingen, die mit eben jenem Buchstaben beginnen. Ans N gelehnt sieht man z.B. ein Nudeln essendes Nashorn oder ins C eingefügt eine Couch, darauf ein Clown, zu Füe︢n den Computer. Weitere ins Bild gesetzte Begriffe (alle am Schluss aufgelistet) finden sich auf schmalen Randleisten und überall schwirrt der betreffende Buchstabe in allen möglichen Schreibweisen herum. So ist auf den altmeisterlich wirkenden Bildern viel zu entdecken, ausser Bekanntem aus Alltag und Umwelt von Leseanfängern u.a. auch manches, was für sie eher entlegen ist (Cancan, Offizier, Panzer), es gibt Figuren aus Märchen und Mythen zu besichtigen und Fremdes, Exotisches, dabei kommen gerne mal Klischees ins Spiel (Afrikaner: mit kurzem Röckchen und Speer). Einsetzbar für geübtere Buchstabierer und Bildleser, weniger als elementarer Einstieg in die Welt des Alphabets

Author Shane Moran demonstrates the central role of literary history to the cultural racism and ideology that fed into apartheid by tracing the ethno-aesthetic figuration of the Bushmen in W. H. I. Bleek's theory of the origin of language. Moran examines the gestation of colonial ideology, and provocatively traces aspects of the post-apartheid rhetoric of commemoration and national unity to their colonialist roots. This detailed and compelling volume contributes significantly to current trends in post-apartheid scholarship. Moran emphasizes the need for a cautious interrogation of the colonial archive and scrutiny of critical discourses used by the would-be postcolonial intellectual, and poses a timely challenge to those committed to exorcising that legacy. Shane Moran teaches at the University of KwaZulu-Natal.

    Kurzfassung: Language policy is all about choices. If you are bilingual or plurilingual, you have to choose which language to use. Even if you speak only one language, you have choices of dialects and styles. Some of these choices are the result of management, reflecting conscious and explicit efforts by language managers to control the choices. This book presents a specific theory of language management. Bernard Spolsky reviews research on the family, religion, the workplace, the media, schools, legal and health institutions, the military and government. Also discussed are language activists, international organisations, and human rights relative to language, and the book concludes with a review of language managers and management agencies. A model is developed that recognises the complexity of language management, makes sense of the various forces involved, and clarifies why it is such a difficult enterprise

    Kurzfassung: James Dawson first published Australian Aborigines in 1881, after deciding that his careful description of the tribes, languages, customs, and characteristics of the indigenous peoples of the western district of Victoria was too bulky for its originally intended publication in a newspaper. Essentially a field-inspired anthropological account of the dwindling Aboriginal population, written before the emergence of anthropology as a formal discipline, Dawson's book draws on his daughter's ability to speak the local languages and attempts a balanced description of a culture he considered ill-used and under-appreciated by white settlers. Minute details about clothing, tools, settlement and beliefs combine to depict a complex society that possessed highly ritualised customs deserving of respect. Dawson also included an extensive vocabulary of words in three indigenous languages that he hoped would facilitate further cross-cultural understanding. His work provides valuable source material for modern researchers in anthropology and linguistics.

    Kurzfassung: The way we say the words we say helps us convey our intended meanings. Indeed, the tone of voice we use, the facial expressions and bodily gestures we adopt while we are talking, often add entirely new layers of meaning to those words. How the natural non-verbal properties of utterances interact with linguistic ones is a question that is often largely ignored. This book redresses the balance, providing a unique examination of non-verbal behaviours from a pragmatic perspective. It charts a point of contact between pragmatics, linguistics, philosophy, cognitive science, ethology and psychology, and provides the analytical basis to answer some important questions: How are non-verbal behaviours interpreted?     Kurzfassung: The way in which people address one another is crucial to expressing social relationships and is closely linked with cultural values. In English we call some people by their first names, and others 'Mr' or 'Ms', followed by their surname. In some other languages there are different ways of saying 'you' depending on the degree of social distance. Exploring practices in the family, school, university, the workplace and in letters, this book reveals patterns in the varied ways people choose to address one another, from pronouns to first names, from honorifics to titles and last names. Examples are taken from contemporary English, French, German and Swedish, using rich data from focus group research, interviews, chat groups, and participant observation.

There was often cross-fertilisation between them, for both were engaged in the same discourses, jurisprudence, philosophy, theology, historiography and literature all drew on proverbs and exempla in their arguments. The interdisciplinary papers in the present volume examine the co-existence of proverbs and exempla in both Latin literature and the vernacular literatures of the Romance and Germanic languages.

    Kurzfassung: Addressing an issue that has puzzled the linguistics community for many years, this book offers a novel approach to the exceptional wide scope behaviour of indefinites. It is the first book explicitly dedicated to exceptional wide scope phenomena. Its unique approach offers an explanation for the fact that it is only a proper subset of the indefinites that shows this exceptional wide scope behaviour. The author draws a careful distinction between genuine and apparent scope readings, a distinction that is usually not taken care of and has thus led to certain confusions. In particular, it is argued that functional readings have to be kept strictly apart from non-functional ones and that all proposals that use functional mechanisms to explain the phenomena at hand face severe problems. The existing body of literature on the main issues of the book is thoroughly reviewed. This makes the book well suited as background literature for graduate seminars on those topics.

Dr. Yvonne Rittgeroth promovierte an der Fakultät für Linguistik und Literaturwissenschaft der Universität Bielefeld zum Thema 'Reformulierungen im aufgabenorientierten Dialog'.
    Kurzfassung: In schriftlicher und mündlicher Kommunikation steht jeder Mensch ständig vor der Aufgabe, sich sprachlich so auszudrücken, dass die Verständigung mit den jeweiligen Adressaten in gewünschter Weise gelingt. Zu einer guten Kommunikationskompetenz gehört daher einerseits das Wissen, wie man von vornherein Verständigungsprobleme vermeidet, und andererseits bei Auftreten solcher Probleme das Wissen, wie man sie löst. Kindt und Rittgeroth stellen die Ergebnisse langjähriger verständigungstheoretischer Forschungen über entsprechende Strategien situierter Verständigungssicherung vor. Untersucht werden die Mensch-Mensch-Kommunikation mit dem Ziel einer Übertragung auf die Mensch-Maschine-Kommunikation. Das Spektrum reicht dabei von der Analyse linguistischer und kognitiver Merkmale kommunikationsbezogener Intelligenzfaktoren des Menschen bis zur Formulierung kognitiv begründbarer Prinzipien, die sich auch auf künstliche informationsverarbeitende Systeme anwenden lassen.

    Kurzfassung: This article is based on a web survey of on-line and print translations into English of poetry by writers from Bosnia since the 1992-1995 war. Combining insights from Actor Network Theory, Activity Theory and Goffman's Social Game Theory, it examines the relationships between human and textual agents in the production of poetry translations. It maps these relationships onto agents' geographic 'positionality'. Among the findings are:(1) Poetry translation is produced by networks of agents working across a 'distributed' space. This implies that it is simplistic to conceptualise literary translation in terms of one agent's loyalty to one cultural space.(2) Translators often carry less power in a production network than an anthology/journal editor or a living source poet.(3) Networks involving players from source-language regions working in a target-language country are particularly effective in publication terms.

    Kurzfassung: Überlieferte Originalstelen mit Inschriften der großen Könige Sargon und Nara-m-Sîn von Akkade, die im 23. Jahrhundert v. Chr. als erste ein Weltreich eroberten, sowie mündlich tradierte Sagen haben diesen beiden Königen einen herausragenden Stellenwert in der historischen Erinnerung der Babylonier und Assyrer verschafft. Dies führte zu einer Reihe erzählender Werke, die zum Teil wie echte Heldenlieder gestaltet sind, zum Teil sich aber auch als authentische Königsinschriften gebärden. Das Verständnis dieser heterogenen Textgruppe in verschiedenen Fragerichtungen zu erhellen, ist das Ziel vorliegender Studie. Zu den Fragestellungen gehören die Bestimmung der Gattungen, denen die Texte angehören, und ihre Scheidung von den authentischen Königsinschriften, die durch das Merkmal der Fiktionalität gekennzeichnet ist. Des Weiteren soll die zum Teil hohe literarische Qualität dieser Werke herausgearbeitet werden. Schließlich wird untersucht, inwiefern sich an diesen Werken die Mechanismen und Bedingungen ihrer Überlieferung ablesen lassen, ob sie Spuren eines mündlichen Sargon- und Nara-m-Sîn-Sagenschatzes aufweisen und welche literarischen Funktionen sie erfüllten. Die Reihe Göttinger Beiträge zun Alten Orientʺ setzt die erfolgreichen Göttinger Arbeitshefte zur Altorientalischen Literaturʺ fort. Die Reihe wird vom Seminar für Altorientalistik der Georg-August-Universität Göttingen herausgegeben und behandelt die Erschließung und Deutung der reichhaltigen Schriftdenkmäler in akkadischer oder sumerischer Sprache aus der Zeit von ca. 3100 - 500 v. Chr.

    Kurzfassung: From a very young age we are told not to stare, and one hallmark of maturation is the ability to resist (or at least hide) our staring behavior. And yet, rarely do we master the impulse. Despite the complicated role it plays in our development, and its unique brand of visual enticement, staring has not been considered before as a suitable object for socio-cultural analysis. What is it about certain kinds of people that makes it impossible to take our eyes off them? Why are some visual stimuli irresistible? Why does staring produce so much anxiety? Drawing on examples from art, media, fashion, history and memoir, Garland-Thomson defines staring, explores the factors that motivate it, and considers the targets and the effects of the stare. A bodily inventory then enumerates how stares actually operate in daily life. A section on "Bodies" focuses on the question of size and scale as key indicators of normalcy, while certain body parts show themselves to be disproportionately arresting, as passages on "Faces" "Hands" and "Breasts" reveal.
