Abstract:
Cette thèse a pour objet d’étude les représentations du peuple costaricien depuis l’année de l’indépendance (1821) et jusqu’en 1917. La thèse part d’un constat : un discours d’« exceptionnalisme costaricien » et, plus particulièrement, le « mythe » d’une société blanche majoritaire au Costa Rica toujours présents non seulement dans les discours costariciens mais aussi dans le regard international. La thèse se propose ainsi d’évaluer l’histoire des représentations des Costariciens sur la longue durée pour mieux comprendre l’ « exception » costaricienne, mais en abordant de manière plus précise la notion de « race » des Costariciens. La recherche se positionne dans la perspective théorique des représentations sociales. L’étude s’approprie en particulier d’une réinterprétation du concept d’ « ethnotype ». L’auteur s’empare de deux dimensions de ce système : l’aspect biologique, la « race » et les trais du caractère. L’étude vise à trouver les divergences et similitudes de deux sortes d’ « ethnotypes » : endogène et exogène. Cette démarche se fait en suivant une visualisation chronologique qui inclut trois périodes de 1821-1880 (émergence et maturation), 1880-1899 (consolidation) et 1900-1917 (naturalisation). Ainsi, tout en jetant une lumière nouvelle sur les représentations du peuple costaricien, ce travail conduit à relire l’histoire de la construction de la nation au Costa Rica. En puisant dans un très vaste corpus qui inclut des sources internes et des sources externes, le travail contribue à expliquer que la singularisation d’un pays et sa définition identitaire peut mieux se comprendre dans l’analyse de l’autoreprésentation et du regard externe
Abstract:
This thesis aims to study the representations of the Costa Rican people since the year of independence (1821) and until year 1917. The thesis starts with an observation: a discourse of "Costa Rican exceptionalism" and, more particularly, the "myth" of a white society in Costa Rica always present not only in speeches but also in the Costa Rican international peglance. The thesis proposes the history of representations of Costa Ricans in a long time to understand the "exception" Costa Rican, but by approching in a more precise way the notion of "race" of Costa Ricans. The research is positioned in the theoretical perspective of social representations. The study appropriates particularly a reinterpretation of the concept of "ethnotype". The author captures two dimensions of this system: the biology, "race" and the features of character. The aim of this study is to find differences and similarities of two types of "ethnotype” : endogenous and exogenous. This is done by following a chronological display that includes three periods of 1821-1880 (emergence and maturation), 1880-1899 (consolidation) and 1900-1917 (naturalization). Thus, while shedding new light on the representations of the Costa Rican people, this work led to read again the history of nation building in Costa Rica. By drawing on a vast corpus that includes internal sources and external sources, the work helps to explain that the singularization of a country and the definition of its identity can better understand in the analysis of self-representation and the external perspective
