Abstract: In the 20th century, jazz was an important artistic form. Depending on the particular European country, jazz music carried different social, political and aesthetic meanings. It brought challenges in the areas of racial issues, the politics of the Cold War between East and West, and in the exploration of boundaries of artistic freedom. In socialist Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia, Hungary and Poland, the situation began to change after 1956 and then 1968, when the ideologists shifted from the aesthetics of socialist realism to postmodernism. In Western countries such as France and Italy, jazz transformed from a modern to a postmodern period. This volume deals with the impact of these changes on the career development of jazz musicians – even beyond 1989 – in terms of various phenomena such as emigration, child prodigies, multiculturalism, multi-genre approaches, or female jazz musicians.

Abstract: When West-German experimental pop rose to transnational fame in the early 1970s, it marked nothing less than the beginning of a new era. For the first time in pop history, the latest innovations originated outside the United States and the United Kingdom; for several years, bands such as Kraftwerk, Can, Tangerine Dream, Amon Düül or Faust - among many others - were considered pop avant-garde, across Europe and the United States. In his book, Alexander Simmeth traces the roots of the so-called Krautrock in West Germany's late 1960s, its zealous reception at home and in the two motherlands of pop, and the reasons for its lasting impact in the decades to come. He identifies Krautrock as a key site of the transnational in West-German cultural history, focusing on the exchange of concepts and ideas, on shared experiences across borders, as well as on mutual key concepts such as authenticity and identity

Abstract: Diverse musical cultures of migrant and minority communities have existed in Europe for centuries and shaped its countries significantly. As part of an EU-funded project this volume deals with the musical activities of minorities and their impact on musical traditions in Europe. It also raises questions such as: How are musical traditions of minorities integrated in education and the public music life? Can music facilitate transcultural dialogue? And to what extent do musical practice and performance reassert the own cultural tradition in a foreign environment? Answers to those and similar questions as well as a review on what can be observed in the 21st century Europe are gathered in various thematic approaches. The book also provides model projects with a practical insight into the life and work with music of migrant and minority cultures across Europe
