    Abstract: Interest in the ancient, the occult, and the 'wyrd' is on the rise. The furrows of Robin Hardy, Piers Haggard, and Michael Reeves have arisen again, most notably in the films of Ben Wheatley, as has the 'Spirit of Dark of Lonely Water', 'Juganets', cursed Saxon crowns, spaceships hidden under ancient barrows, owls and flowers, time-warping stone circles, wicker men, the goat of Mendes, and malicious stone tapes. This book charts the summoning of these esoteric arts n the latter half of the twentieth century and beyond, using theories of psychogeography, hauntology, and topography to delve into the genre's output in film, television, and multimedia as its 'sacred demon of ungovernableness' rises yet again in the twenty-first century.

    Abstract: Since 2004, the Baby Doll Mardi Gras tradition in New Orleans has gone from an obscure, almost-forgotten practice to a flourishing cultural force. The original Baby Dolls were groups of black women, & some men, in the early Jim Crow era who adopted New Orleans street-masking tradition as a unique form of fun & self-expression against a backdrop of racial discrimination. Wearing short dresses, bloomers, bonnets, & garters with money tucked tight, they strutted, sang ribald songs, chanted, & danced on Mardi Gras Day & on St. Joseph feast night. Today's Baby Dolls continue the tradition of one of the first street women's masking & marching groups in the United States. They joyfully & unabashedly defy gender roles, claiming public space & proclaiming through their performance their right to social citizenship.

    Abstract: Political and scientific debates on migration policies have mostly focused on governments' efforts to control or reduce low-skilled, asylum, and irregular migration or to encourage the return migration of these categories. Less research and constructive discourse has been conducted on the role and effectiveness of policies to attract or retain high-skilled workers. An improved understanding of the drivers and dynamics of high-skilled migration is essential for effective policy-making, as most highly developed and emerging economies experience growing shortages of high-skilled labour supply in certain occupations and sectors, and skilled immigration is often viewed as one way of addressing these. Simplistic assumptions that high-skilled migrants are primarily in pursuit of higher wages raise the expectation that policies which open channels for high-skilled immigration are generally successful.

    Abstract: Education research has seen a phenomenal growth in studies that explore the multiple, fluid, and changing complexities of culture and identity work. The nuanced, contradictory, and process-oriented nature of identity and identification has meant that the studies in education are largely, and appropriately, qualitative and ethnographic. However, because qualitative studies are marked by their focus on the particular, it has been difficult to discern exactly what these studies contribute to identity theory collectively. In 'Cultural Constructions of Identity,' a set of meta-ethnographic syntheses of qualitative studies addressing identity become the vehicle to speak across single studies to address cultural identity theory.

    Abstract: For the analysis of contemporary historical pop-cultural phenomena, a surplus of transnational perspectives are often asserted, but rarely backed up empirically.     Abstract: Der Orient ist als kulturelle Antithese eine Projektionsfläche europäischer Denkweisen und Phantasmen. Besonders in der französischen und frankophonen Literatur und Kunst ist er seit dem 19. Jahrhundert ein allgegenwärtiges Thema. Die Beiträge des Bandes machen diese Konstruktionen des Orients in ihrer Komplementarität und in der medialen Differenz von bildender Kunst und Literatur sichtbar. Als ein interdisziplinärer Beitrag zur Orientalismus-Debatte werden die literarischen und künstlerischen Werke des sogenannten Orientalismus nicht länger einer versatzstückhaften Ideologiekritik durch Wissenschaft unterzogen. Vielmehr wird gezeigt, dass einem Teil dieser Werke die Dekonstruktion des Orients als ästhetische Praxis bereits selbst eingeschrieben ist
    Abstract: As a cultural antithesis, the Orient is a site of projections for European mind-sets and fantasies. Since the 19th century, it has been an omnipresent subject, particularly in francophone literature and art. The contributions to this volume uncover these constructions of the Orient in their complementarity and their different manifestations in visual art and literature. As an interdisciplinary contribution to the orientalism debate, the literary and artistic works of so-called orientalism are no longer subjected to a stock critique of ideology through scholarship. Rather, we are shown that many of these books are already engaged in the act of deconstructing the Orient as an aesthetic practice

    Abstract: 25 years after the fall of the wall and ten years after the eastward expansion of the EU - these politically significant events have also fundamentally altered historical research on Eastern Europe. The extent to which the contributors to this volume have benefitted as a result of the establishment of historical cultural studies, the opening of previously sealed archives and more importantly, from a hitherto unknown freedom of movement, is shown in their urban histories: based on cultural-historical interrogations into »museification« and monumentalization, on representativeness or multiculturalism in the Eastern European urban sphere, they offer insights into the history of metropolises like Prague, Baku, Moscow or St Petersburg, and regional centers like Lviv or Irkutsk

    Abstract: The recent media, political and everyday treatment of forced migration has made overt racism "socially acceptable" again. In this way, the discussion of "refugees" and "migrants" following the events in Cologne on New Years' Eve has increasingly taken on the tone of the demonisation of the imagined Other. As this is linked to the "tightening of the asylum act" and a European refugee politics that is increasingly isolationist, this demonisation also preserves material and symbolic relations of privilege. Because the Others are demonic and rampant, as the most concise formation of the analysis goes, we are empowered to protect ourselves from them. It is from this perspective that researchers come forward to speak against the hegemonic discourse

    Abstract: Warum bauen Menschen zu Dingen eine Beziehung auf? Einen Beitrag zur Klärung dieser Frage bietet Anamaria Depners ethnologische Betrachtung des Umzugsprozesses ins Altenheim. Hierbei überrascht der Umgang mit den eigenen Sachen - nicht zuletzt, weil er mitunter destruktiv ist. Die Analyse der Beobachtungen zum situativen Bedeutungswechsel der Dinge und der Emotionen, die Menschen ihnen entgegenbringen, bilden die Grundlage für eine allgemeine Objekttheorie, die zeigt: Der Mensch-Ding-Beziehung liegt weniger die sogenannte Agency der Dinge zu Grunde als vielmehr ihre physisch-materielle Präsenz.Die Untersuchung liefert ein empirisch fundiertes, theoretisches Modell für die Material Culture Studies sowie unterschiedliche Anknüpfungspunkte für gerontologische Forschung

    Abstract: Dance intersects with ethnicity in a powerful variety of ways and in a broad set of venues. Dance practices and attitudes about ethnicity have sometimes been the source of outright discord, such as when African Americans were - and sometimes still are - told that their bodies are "not right" for ballet, when Anglo Americans painted their faces black to perform in minstrel shows, when nineteenth-century Christian missionaries banned the performance of particular native dance traditions throughout much of Polynesia, and when the Spanish conquistadors and church officials banned sacred Aztec dance rituals. The Oxford Handbook of Dance and Ethnicity brings together scholars from across the globe to investigate what it means to define oneself in an ethnic category and how this category is performed and represented by dance as an ethnicity.

    Abstract: Focussing European borders: The book provides insight into a variety of changes in the nature of borders in Europe and its neighborhood from various disciplinary perspectives. Special attention is paid to the history and contemporary dynamics at Polish and German borders. Of particular interest are the creation of Euroregions, mutual perceptions of Poles and Germans at the border, EU Regional Policy, media debates on the extension of the Schengen area. Analysis of cross-border mobility between Abkhazia and Georgia or the impact of Israel's »Security Fence« to Palestine on society complement the focus on Europe with a wider view
