Abstract: This book explores the relationship between federalism, social divides and conflict in African countries. It details the origins, design and performance of major federal and quasi-federal states to assess their performance and propose new methods for managing these divides. Drawing on evidence from countries such as Ethiopia, Kenya, Nigeria and South Africa, the book examines the nature and causes of ethnonationalism, mobilisation and confrontation with the nation state. The book is a comprehensive treatment of the five major federal and devolved systems in Africa. It explains their origin, design and operation, and assesses their performance. More importantly, the book explains the distinct nature of federal and devolved systems in the Global South. Federal and devolved systems in Africa cannot be understood in isolation from the nature of state power on the continent. The book explains the impact of unregulated state power on the dynamics of federal and devolved systems in Africa. Federalism and devolution have not failed but have been betrayed – both in the past and the present – in serving as a venue for accommodation, intergovernmental bargaining and negotiated reform. Assefa Fiseha is Professor of Law and Governance at Addis Ababa University, Ethiopia.

Abstract: “This is an important book. We live in a now totally interdependent world. To develop a viable world order demands that its nations work together to address, and learn from each other how best to address, the common problems they face. Unfortunately, many in the West lack knowledge about and consequently have a distorted view of life in Africa. This collection of essays from leading scholars throughout the continent helps to rectify this imbalance. The essays discuss, from an African perspective, issues that pervade the world: climate change, the Covid virus, internal displacement, socio-economic and human rights. The central theme is the need to develop political and legal institutions and practices to address these issues. so as to build societies and a world order that benefit all people. We can all benefit from reading this book.” —Thomas Kleven, Professor of Law, Thurgood Marshall School of Law, Houston, Texas, USA This book eulogises a personality that has constructed a formidable scholarly and personal legacy that future generations of legal practitioners and socio-legal scholars in Africa should look to for guidance and inspiration. Divided into three parts, the book deals with a longstanding legal practice and scholarship on the role of international law and institutions. Additionally, the book discussed roles of an African scholar and practitioner to advance socio-economic and cultural rights across the continent, through contextualised, progressive adjudication and from a gendered perspective. Finally, the book examined the importance of early-childhood education and legal education alike, the role of the courts in redressing these concerns and the need for greater inclusion of Afro and queer-sensitive pedagogies and perspectives. Contributors to the book address the role of schools in redressing systemic marginalisation—including stigmatisation based on disability—and efforts to translate their rights as prescribed in national constitutions and international legal instruments. The methodology encompasses a TWAIL approach and the call to revisit orthodox approaches to legal scholarship. Azubike Chinwuba Onuora-Oguno is Associate Professor in the Faculty of Law, University of Ilorin, Nigeria.

Abstract: The book will provide the first regionally widespread and thematic look at African electoral systems and antecedent issues such as electoral laws, gender, politics, violence, and youth challenges in Africa. It will enrich the discussion on four country-specific studies within a general regional framework that explains and explores a “home base” viewpoint of what occurs before, during and after elections. The book will bring together a discussion of diverse issues under one umbrella, which has never been done before. This book begins a discussion from an academic’s and practitioner’s view of elections, contrasting the intellectual discussion with the author’s personal experience of practical realities on the ground. Additionally, the book will create long-standing and lasting literature that will compare elections in some of Africa's leading democratic countries, such as Nigeria, South Africa, Kenya, Ghana and Sierra Leone. Emmanuel Saffa Abdulai is Head of the Department of Law, Faculty of Law, University of Sierra Leone. He is also a civil society practitioner working on elections and leading coalitions. He is a pro-democracy activist and was chair of the Political Affairs Cluster of the African Union’s Economic Social and Cultural Council monitored several elections in Africa. He led the legal review process of Sierra Leone's election laws leading to the 2023 elections. .

Abstract: “… Brings a breath of fresh air to scholarship in [peace and security] by including issues not usually canvassed in discussions … This is what makes for innovations as the authors and editors have ably demonstrated.” —Prof. Patricia Kameri-Mbote, Director, Law Division United Nations Environment Programme “… An accessible yet rigorous reflection by committed African scholars and practitioners on issues of peace and security …” —Dr. Odomaro Mubangizi, S.J., Former Dean of the Philosophy Department at the Institute of Philosophy and Theology, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and Editor of Justice, Peace and Environment Bulletin “… Helpful to social change organizations and policy-making bodies at local, national, and international levels.” —David Atwood, PhD, Former Director and Representative for Disarmament and Peace, Quaker United Nations Office, Geneva, and Consultant, Small Arms Survey, Geneva This edited volume harnesses African expertise to examine the local and global dimensions of peace. It is an outcome of a workshop in Nairobi, Kenya that convened African academics and practitioners with diverse specialisations. The authors’ contributions foreground local voices across a broad scope of inquiry, including rural community structures, health, trauma, sexual violence, peacekeeping and cybersecurity. African knowledge is essential to understanding peace on the continent – the complexities of conflict and insecurity, the lived experiences of individuals and communities, and their responses to such phenomena. This analytical approach underpins the book, creating fertile ground to identify and develop innovations that hold the promise for sustainable African solutions. Joseph Adero Ngala is Professor of International Relations and Diplomacy at the United States International University Africa, Kenya. Rachel Julian is Professor of Peace Studies at Leeds Beckett University, UK. Jonathan Henriques is Research Fellow at the South Sudan Center for Strategic and Policy Studies, South Sudan.

Abstract: “This collection of articles reviews a wide range of social issues cusped in the broad themes of Africa’s development, impact of Covid 19, transnationalism and climate change in the 21st Century. Given its contemporariness, it provides voice for the urgency for Africa to come to grips with its development woes” — Professor Sultan Khan, Sociologist, University of KwaZulu-Natal The book takes a cursory look at the drivers and the directions of Africa’s developmental drive as a largely developing continent within the frameworks of the ever-dynamic global space, putting into perspective inherent challenges and opportunities of the 21st Century, and thereafter. Being the continent with most youthful population, Africa appears to still lack in requisite innovative interventions to transmute such demographic dividend into economic opportunities for the benefits of the larger population. Instead, there has been increasing trend in South-North migrations among both skilled and unskilled Africans across all age groups. Besides, impacts of climate change on the continent have also implied unstructured migratory trend within and beyond the bounds of the continent. Africa has continued to play a feeble role in various United Nations (UN)-enabled ‘Conference of Parties’ (COP) negotiations, such as the COP-26 in Glasgow, Scotland (2021). The management of recent Covid-19 epidemic across the world has presented a clear pointer to Africa that except development is internally-driven, no one is ready to exogenously drive sustainable good life for others. Ostensible ‘vaccine nationalism’ that has dotted the production and availability of various Covid-19 vaccine brands, which has ultimately left Africa as the ‘begging continent’ one more time calls for in-depth interrogation in contextualizing what the place of Africa has been, is and to be within the global interactive mode. Adebusuyi Isaac Adeniran is Professor in sociology, migration and development studies at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Nigeria; Visiting Scholar in migration and development studies at York University, Toronto, Canada and Research Consultant with United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).

Abstract: This is a timely addition to the literature on China’s economic relations with African countries, as hopes have run high that Chinese investments will kick-start Africa’s industrialisation. The volume shows that foreign capital might be a necessary but not a sufficient condition for the structural transformation of African economies, making it an insightful read – sadly the last one co-edited by Ian Taylor. —Tim Zajontz, Lecturer in Global Political Economy, University of Freiburg This is a much-needed book in the China-Africa space and the larger field of African Political Economy. The book comprehensively contextualises and analyses Chinese FDI in Africa within the context of the continent’s pursuit of structural economic transformation. Underpinned by robust research and insightful case studies that provide valuable perspectives, it is a must-read for scholars, researchers, policymakers, and practitioners. —Mandira Bagwandeen, University of Cape Town What are the impacts of Chinese investment in Africa? Is it transforming economic development on the continent? This book is different from many other studies of this issue, as it unpacks the ‘black box’ of technological and learning spillover effects from Chinese firms to others. Rather than using econometric tools, which has now become a standard approach and come with their own set of challenges, the authors investigate the interactions between Chinese investors and African firms in terms of the transfer of technology and learning and explain why such interactions are rare. Only by understanding the reasons behind this rarity can approaches be developed to promote spillovers. Dominik Kopiński is Associate Professor in the Institute of Economics at the University of Wroclaw, Head of the International Economic Relations Department, and Cofounder of the Polish Centre for African Studies. Abstract: Chapter 1 Introduction – A Veil of Ignorance -- Chapter 2 Pre-colonial Political Order in Africa -- Chapter 3 Pillars of Africa’s Ancient Economies -- Chapter 4 African Pre-colonial Social and Political Structures -- Chapter 5 Colonialism and the Struggle for Independence -- Chapter 6 An Interdependency Stuck in the Past -- Chapter 7 Facing the Future.
Abstract: “The past few decades have seen a new Africa rise, and a new Europe. Their mutual relations call for more knowledge of their respective pasts, empathy and respect for the other’s identity. Both continents are and will remain neighbours forever. They also share the global climate issues.” —Herman Count Van Rompuy, President Emeritus of the European Council “The emergence of a mutually beneficial transformative partnership between Europe and Africa requires that the past be acknowledged and made peace with, in order to free the present and enable the future to emerge for the benefit of generations yet to be born. Both are critical to the successful emergence of a new human civilisation where global equity for a healthy planet would be realised. This book is a must read for both European and African citizens to get to know how we have come to where we are and to be able to dream of a liberated future where equity and wellbeing for all would be core values.” —Dr. Mamphela Ramphele, former Managing Director of the World Bank. This book, through a politico-historical analysis, aims to provide a more balanced perspective regarding the nature of Africa’s relations with other global regions. It emphasizes the sophisticated nature of pre-colonial African politico-historical commentaries often overlooked or simplified. As such, the narrative avoids the usual misrepresentations which impress that African-European interactions are a history of European actions in an Africa generally devoid of anything similar to the cultures, institutions and abilities of Europe. Further, it contests the historical narrative that indigenous Africans have had no real active role vis-à-vis an assertive, dominating Europe in historical times. Within this book, the contestation of such narratives with evidence-based counter perspectives is of particular benefit for our current educational, social and political contexts. Abstract: This edited volume reflects on some of the important discussions on the trends of governance, conflict and security in Africa. It explores some of the emerging concerns and offers a holistic understanding of the remote and immediate causes of the conflict and how the neo-colonial African states have been structured in a manner that makes violent conflict inevitable. The book thereby provides an overview of Africa’s security challenges and proffers some sustainable policy options for curtailing lawlessness and armed conflict on the continent. Literature is exhaustive about the nexus between governance, peace, and security; however, discourse on the impact of ‘new’ conflict on governance has been scant. Understanding these new trends has become a necessity and precondition for sustainable development, as reflected in both the African Union (AU) Agenda 2063 and the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Abstract: This book examines the socio-economic rights challenges of refugees and asylum seekers in Africa. It seeks to fill a major gap in the literature by providing a nuanced discussion of the barriers to the realisation of the socio-economic rights of refugees and asylum seekers in Africa. It equally aims to provide some concrete recommendations to African governments towards the realisation of the socio-economic rights of refugees and asylum seekers. With the aid of lessons from selected African countries, this book highlights the gaps, challenges and good practices regarding the realisation of the socio-economic rights of refugees and asylum seekers in the region. The book will be useful to researchers, students, academicians, policymakers, and international organisations or institutions interested in advancing the rights of refugees and asylum seekers. Abstract: ‘This collection of essays brings together fresh voices in international criminal law to tackle perhaps the most misunderstood, and potentially the most important, concept in modern international criminal law: complementarity. By addressing the prospects and challenges of national-level prosecution of the most serious crimes in international law, the book opens up avenues for further reflection.’ — Dire Tladi, Professor and NRF SARChI Chair of International Constitutional Law, South Africa This book critically examines the issues pertaining to the Rome Statute’s complementarity principle. The focus lies on the primacy of African states to prosecute alleged perpetrators of international crimes in their respective jurisdictions. The chapters explore states’ international and domestic obligations to hold perpetrators of international crimes to account before the national courts, and demonstrate the complexity of enforcing national accountability of alleged perpetrators of international crimes while also ensuring that post-conflict African states achieve national healing, reconciliation, and sustainable peace. The contributions reject impunity for international crimes whilst also considering these complexities. Emphasis further lies on the meaning of accountability in the context of the politics of selective international criminal justice for crimes committed before the establishment of the International Criminal Court. Abstract: This volume offers systematic research on regionalism in Africa and explores the role and impact of external partners on the dynamics, institutional design, and performance of regional integration projects. It acknowledges and elaborates the multilevel and multidimensional nature of regionalism, with its variety of cooperative institutions and policy areas, while closely considering uneven relationships to external actors in African regional organizations. The book’s two comprehensive mapping studies examine patterns of asymmetric inter-dependence between regionalism in Africa and external partners in Europe, with a focus on trade and donor funding, and highlight structural imbalances and (un)intended consequences. Five additional case studies provide in-depth analyses of a variety of African regional organizations, mainly with a focus on security regionalism, and elaborate how external partners influence and affect integration processes and projects. Although regionalism in Africa benefitted from external relations and partnerships with Europe, contributions in this volume question this positive impression, highlighting some of the major undermining factors and actors. Johannes Muntschick is a researcher and lecturer in the Department of Political Science at the Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz, Germany. His research and teaching experience lies in the fields of international relations theory, international institutions, and regionalism in the Global South.

It offers a novel perspective on the effectiveness of interregional partnerships with respect to peace and security challenges on the African continent. Covering the Central African Republic, Mali and Somalia, it provides important lessons on conditions under which cooperation between the EU and African partners (the AU and ECOWAS) is successfully contributing to the effectiveness of peace operations.” — Diana Panke, University of Freiburg, Germany “This fine book makes a critical contribution to the study of effectiveness of peacekeeping operations in the context of interregional studies. It fills an important gap in the thriving literature on inter-organizational relations and their effects not only for involved institutions but also in the field.” — Malte Brosig, University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa Interregional cooperation in peace and security as key feature of the EU external relations is particularly relevant in Africa-EU relations. However, these efforts have not been systematically evaluated to date. Focusing specifically on interregional peace operations, this volume provides the first comprehensive evaluation of the Africa-EU Partnership on Peace and Security. It explains the effectiveness of interregional security cooperation across three cases: (1) the AU-EU response in the Central African Republic (2013) and (2) in Somalia (2007–2017), (3) and the ECOWAS-EU efforts in Mali (2012). The book makes a valuable empirical, theoretical, and methodological contribution to EU foreign policy, comparative regionalism, and conflict studies. Abstract: “Having followed previous studies and ongoing debates on UN reform, this significant piece of work provides a relevant contribution as a critique of the United Nations’ involvement in Africa over a critical period of more than half a century. The book will serve as a valuable resource that provides a comprehensive conceptual framework of thought-provoking arguments and recommendations. These will benefit policy-makers and practitioners fundamental to UN-Africa partnerships, for the achievement of sustainable human capital development, peace, and stability across the African continent.” —Ambassador Dr Patrick I. Gomes, Former Secretary-General of the African, Caribbean, and Pacific (ACP) Group of States (now known as the Organisation of the African, Caribbean, and Pacific States [OACPS]) This book concerns the United Nations’ peacemaking, peacekeeping, peace-building, and post-conflict reconstruction efforts in Africa from 1960 to 2021. Succinctly discussed are historic and contemporary peace, security, and economic engagements within 18 countries spanning eight African regions: the Great Lakes; the Economic Community of Central African States; East Africa; the Horn of Africa; North Africa; the Sahel Region; West Africa; and Southern Africa. The book develops a neo-realist and imperialist critique that discusses how resource-rich, conflict-ridden states have become easy targets for capitalists, terrorists, and transnational crime, aligned to geostrategic parochial interests. Critically argued is that endogenous economic growth factors, if applied effectively, can achieve both peace and security, and meet the Global Sustainable Development Goals. Such efforts require constructive engagement with the five permanent members of the UN Security Council: China, France, Russia, the UK, and the US. However, the book contends that the cornerstone of multilateral engagement involves Africa’s 55 states and the African Union’s three major pillars: the Peace and Security Council, the African Governance Architecture, and the Post-Conflict Reconstruction Development Centre, which have the ability to move resource-rich, conflict-ridden states out of transnational crime and poverty. This book offers wide-ranging analyses of contemporary African diplomacy and a compelling critique of UN peacekeeping efforts in Africa, which resonates to scholars of international relations, peace and conflict studies, and African politics. Abstract: This open access book discusses and addresses the compelling questions concerning the ideals of citizenship, the processes of learning to fulfill these ideals, and possibilities of education in fostering citizenship. Rather than advocating for one framework, the authors demonstrate the continuously contested nature of the concept of citizenship as theoretically discussed and practically experienced. The monograph combines, in an unconventional way, selected philosophical accounts and everyday experiences from certain locations in Tanzania and Uganda. It provides contributions from philosophical ideas drawing on scholars such as Chantal Mouffe, Rosi Braidotti, Theodor Adorno, and Étienne Balibar on the one hand, and the conceptions articulated by groups of inhabitants of rural and urban settings in Africa, on the other hand. Therefore, the book offers fresh readings under the lenses of citizenship and learning. Katariina Holma is Professor of Education and Head of the Research Unit at the University of Oulu, Finland. Abstract: “African agency in moderating China-US competition to advance peace and prosperity on the continent, with mutual benefit for the two global powers, is well-served by this concise and compelling book. This book should be required reading for policymakers and concerned publics throughout Africa and abroad.” -- John Stremlau, Head of Peace Programmes, Carter Center, USA. This book offers a rich perspective on Africa’s agency in the changing global order marked by intense geopolitical contestations. It discusses ways in which the African continent has been on the margins of the global economic system because of the actions of major powers and Africa’s own leaders, and how this legacy can be overcome. The book covers an uncharted ground in analyzing the intersection between geopolitical rivalry, digital futures, and Africa’s place in the world. This text makes a clarion call for African leaders and citizens to define better development pathways for the continent through insisting on ethical and transformation leadership as well as building credible institutions that are inclusive. This, according to the author, will ensure a sounder basis for Africa’s positive agency. Further, the book makes a strong case for structural transformation that is innovation-led, and that African decision-makers should leverage US-China rivalries to achieve Africa’s own development interests. Abstract: This handbook fills a large gap in the current knowledge about the critical role of Africa in the changing global order. By connecting the past, present, and future in a continuum that shows the paradox of existence for over one billion people, the book underlines the centrality of the African continent to global knowledge production, the global economy, global security, and global creativity. Bringing together perspectives from top Africa scholars, it actively dispels myths of the continent as just a passive recipient of external influences, presenting instead an image of an active global agent that astutely projects soft power. Unlike previous handbooks, this book offers an eclectic mix of historical, contemporary, and interdisciplinary approaches that allow for a more holistic view of the many aspects of Africa’s relations with the world. Abstract: This book examines the role of the African Union in relation to African agency in international politics. It examines the manner and extent to which the African Union exercises two forms of agency—shirking and slippage—in its strategic and collaborative partnerships. The author focuses on four major AU partnerships with the European Union, NATO, the United Nations and US AFRICOM. The books examines African agency in each partnership by exploring the politics and dynamics of each partnership in different aspects: the multilevel engagement, institutionalization, resource contribution and disbursement, as well as preference linkage. It specifically does that by examining African ownership and leadership in all of these aspects. The book highlights the role of agency slack as a survival strategy to escape from the AU’s subaltern position in international politics. It designates the partnership with the European Union as emblematic of African agency; while the others exhibit different forms of agency slack. Partnerships with NATO and the United Nations exhibit shirking, while that with the US AFRICOM exhibits slippage. Abstract: This handbook takes stock of the African Union’s Vision 2020 to rid the African continent of wars, civil conflicts, human rights violations, humanitarian disasters including violent conflicts and the prevention of genocide, and to provide recommendations on how to address contemporary threats to peace and security in Africa. It explores the continent’s current peace and security landscape, including new actors, emerging threats, and the prospects for achieving sustainable peace. With contributions from highly respected experts in the field, both academics and practitioners, the volume unpacks the sources of conflict, instability and the challenges of peace and development, and provides research-based policy advice to guide and inform African governments, policy makers, practitioners, as well as scholarly audiences on the continent and beyond. Abstract: There is an emerging consensus that what is projected as democratic governance and justice in Africa requires a re-calibration, in particular, in relation to the constitutive demos, human rights, the realisation of commitments at various governance levels and the convergence between these ideations. The post-colonial narrative on democracy has unveiled some crevices in rule of law, political equality, political participation, political culture and freedom of the press. Aside from the fact that these notions are threatened by some existing institutional structures, these notions are increasingly being negotiated across political spaces. Evident in the prevalent narrative is an imperative for Africa to assert its place on the global scene of democratic governance and justice. However, if this will be accomplished, it is important to understand some of the issues that need to be worked through in this transition. Aderomola Adeola is a democracy and human rights expert and the lead editor of Governance in Nigeria post-1999: revisiting the democratic ‘new dawn’ of the Fourth Republic (2019) and Compliance with International Human Rights Law in Africa (2022). Abstract: This book presents insights into the governance challenge associated with the management of the lockdown measures in relation to the welfare of citizens in selected African states. The intention of the project is to present a critical analysis of the effectiveness and the consequences of the measures adopted by the government of these African countries to contain further spread of the virus, within the context of existing governance challenges in the management of the public sector. This will expose the contradictions in the implementation of public policy and the actualization of its intendment for the promotion of good governance and the welfare of citizens. The benefit thereof is the feasibility of arousing further intellectual engagements on the need for effective management of public sector with strong infrastructural support for the good of all in Africa. Abstract: Although there is growing interest in the role of religion in meeting the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Agenda 2030, very few studies have focused on the contributions of interfaith networks. Most of the contemporary publications on religion and development focus on single religions or faith-based organizations. This volume addresses the lacuna in the available scholarship by undertaking detailed analyses of how interfaith networks in diverse African contexts contribute to development. Chapters in this volume engage in theoretical debates on interfaith networks and development, while describing concrete, fresh case studies on how particular interfaith networks are contributing towards the meeting of the SDGs in specific contexts. Thus, the volume describes older and newer interfaith networks and analyses their achievements and challenges. Contributors focus on SDGs that include peacebuilding, gender, youth, the environment, as well as overviews of interfaith initiatives in different African contexts. Abstract: This book examines violence against women in Africa and criminal justice from the perspective of African scholars, practitioners and experts. As a global and long-standing issue, violence against women is gaining public visibility across the African continent with some states announcing a national crisis warranting immediate redress. At the global level, the elimination of all forms of violence against all women and girls forms a key part of United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 5: Gender Equality. Split across two volumes, these books present a comprehensive analysis of the latest research and theories, principles and practices of criminal justice systems, criminal justice accountability mechanisms, and the key challenges women face in their quest for justice on the African continent. This volume (II) focusses on sexual violence and vulnerable women’s access to justice in Africa. Volume I focusses on legislation and its impact, the limitations of criminal justice responses, and the cultural and social norms regarding access to justice. Together, they adopt a comparative approach that highlight gaps and good practices to provide a rich source of authoritative information for promoting an intra-African dialogue and cross-fertilization of ideas across the different criminal justice traditions in Africa. Both volumes seek to advance discussions on eliminating violence against women in Africa and speak to those interested in criminal justice, violence, gender studies and African legal studies. Ashwanee Budoo-Scholtz is the programme manager of the Master’s in Human Rights and Democratisation in Africa at the Centre for Human Rights, Faculty of Law, University of Pretoria, South Africa. Emma Charlene Lubaale is an associate professor at the Faculty of Law of Rhodes University, South Africa.

Abstract: This book explores the impacts of current mining licensing regimes in Africa and how they influence sustainable development principles. International law and conventions on mining are used as a lens to examine a regionalized perspective of the history of mining law and customary land law. Alternative approaches are then suggested, through a comparative and sovereignty-based study of mining laws and policies, to see how the challenge of uneven development can be combatted using minerals. This book aims to highlight how mineral possessions can transform communities if the economic policies, customary law structures, and the geopolitical landscape guarantee inclusivity and equal partnerships. It will be relevant to researchers and policymakers interested in mineral economics, mining law, and African economies. Hudson Mtegha is a Visiting Adjunct Professor at the School of Mining Engineering, University of the Witwatersrand.

Abstract: In today’s globalised world economy, it is becoming increasingly pressing to shine a light on the interface of work and private life. In order to fully understand the issue we must take an inclusive view and not limit our understanding to Western perspectives. This contributed volume encompasses research and perspectives from the global south, including Sub-Saharan Africa, Asia and South America. In doing so, this collection fills a gap in existing literature to give a broader view of the topic. Divided by geographic territory into three sections, the book combines original research, case studies and interviews as well as comparative studies. Chapters cover a wide range of emerging issues including gender and work-life balance; the role of culture; men and household work and work and family balance, to name a few. Crucially, the book offers critical perspectives and understanding of work-life interface/balance/conflict as a collection of conceptual, theoretical, and empirical studies that draws on qualitative and mixed methodologies. Bringing a unique contribution to the field, this book is a useful resource for students, academics, managers and policy makers. Toyin Ajibade Adisa is Senior Lecturer in HRM and Organisational Behaviour at the University of East London, UK. Currently, he is a course leader for HRM undergraduate course at UEL. His research interest covers areas of flexible working practices and gender equality. Toyin has published in high-impact academic journals. Abstract: This book explores how culture and tradition have impacted the tendency for African women to opt for entrepreneurship. The first section presents literature on the concept of entrepreneurship and introduces traditional African women entrepreneurs—the first-generation, culture-driven entrepreneurs, driven by the need to alleviate poverty within the family. The second section covers the modern, second-generation entrepreneurs driven by such forces as education, globalization, and technology. Further, the author assesses the regional perspectives on entrepreneurship and explores the entrepreneurial ecosystems to determine their relevance to the development of entrepreneurial spirit in Africa and among women in particular. This book expands on knowledge about the role that women play in the socio-economic development of the African continent. Chi Anyansi-Archibong is Professor Emerita at North Carolina A&T, USA. She is Past President of the North American Case Research Association (NACRA) and Founder of Southeast Case Research Association.
