Abstract: The Routledge Companion to Migration, Communication and Politics brings together academics from numerous disciplines to show the legal, political, communicative, theoretical, methodological, and media implications of migration. The collection makes the compelling case that migration does not occur in a vacuum; rather, it is driven by and reacts to various factors, including the political, economic, and cultural worlds in which individuals live. The 25 chapters reveal the complex nature of migration from various angles, not only looking at how policy affects migrants but also how individuals and marginalized groups are impacted by such acts. In Part I contributors examine migration law, debating the role of the state in managing migration flows and investigating existing migration policy. Part II offers theories and methods that integrate communication studies, political science, and law into the study of migration, including cultural fusion theory and Gebserian theory. Part III looks at how contemporary perceptions of migration and migrants intersect with media representations across media outlets worldwide. Finally, Part IV offers case studies that present the intricacies of migration within different cultural, national, and political groups. Migration is the key political, economic, and cultural issue of our time and this companion takes the next step in the debate; namely, the effects of the how, in addition to the how and why. Researchers and students of communication, politics, media, and law will find this an invaluable intervention

Abstract: "This textbook describes and explains the complex reality of contemporary internal and international migrations in East and Southeast Asia. Taking an interdisciplinary approach, Anthony J. Fielding combines theoretical debate and detailed empirical analysis to provide students with an understanding of the causes and consequences of the many types of contemporary migration flows in the region. Written by an experienced scholar and teacher of migration studies, this is an essential text for courses on Asian migrations and mobility, and important reading for courses on international migration and Asian societies more generally"--

Abstract: "This book addresses the specific position of domestic workers in the context of evolving human rights norms. Human rights law has somewhat belatedly begun to address the structured inequalities and exclusions that define the domain of domestic work. The continuum of exploitation that has historically defined the everyday of domestic work exclusion from employment and social security standards and precarious migration status have frequently been neglected. However, as in other areas of international law, it is primarily the moments of crisis, incidents of human trafficking, slavery or forced labour, that have captured the attention of human rights law. Drawing upon a broad range of case studies, Care, Migration and Human Rights presents a thorough examination of key issues such as the commodification of care, the impact of the jurisprudence of the CJEU and the European Court of Human Rights on 'primary care providers', as well as the effect that trends in migration law have on migrant domestic workers. In addition to the question of how migration status impacts upon the effective realisation of rights, the editors also explore wider problems such as the continuing gendered division of labour and the absence of state or societal supports. This volume will be of interest to lawyers, academics and policy makers in the fields of human rights, migration, and gender studies"--

Abstract: "Why are migration policies sometimes heavily contested and high on the political agenda? And why do they, at other moments and in other countries, hardly lead to much public debate? The entrance and settlement of migrants in Western Europe has prompted various political reactions. In some countries anti-immigration parties have gained substantial public support while in others migration policies have been hardly controversial. The Politicisation of Migration examines the differences between seven Western European countries by developing a conceptual framework to empirically explain patterns of politicisation and de-politicisation. The analyses show that over the past decade immigration has been increasingly defined in socio-cultural terms and that it has been receiving less political attention since the economic crisis started in 2007. This book also looks at the role of mainstream parties and political actors in the process of politicisation, and demonstrates how the role of 'challengers' is more limited than often assumed. Contributing to literatures on migration, party politics and agenda-setting, the book will be of interest to students and scholars in the fields of politics and migration studies"--
