    Abstract: Die zahlreichen Schicksale der Verfolgten des Nationalsozialismus sind faktenreich belegt, stehen aber im Spannungsfeld zur regionalen Erinnerungskultur nach 1945. Was bedeuten diese Spannungen heute? Maria Anna Willer untersucht Strukturen und Prozesse der Ausgrenzung in der Face-to-Face-Gesellschaft eines Dorfes am bayrischen Alpenrand zur Zeit der NS-Herrschaft und beleuchtet dessen Erinnerungskultur. In Anlehnung an Foucault beschreibt sie im Modell eines »Dispositivs der NS-Verfolgung« die engmaschigen Strukturen der Kontrolle und Überwachung sowie Widerstand und Hilfeleistungen als Kategorien der NS-Diktatur auf dem Dorf. Es zeigt sich: Nach 1945 ist eine Kontinuität der Ausgrenzung erkennbar, wenn die Erinnerung an Opfer der NS-Verfolgung verdrängt wird.

    Abstract: "'Fallen Monuments and Contested Memorials' examines how the modification, destruction, or absence of monuments and memorials can be viewed as performative acts that challenge prescribed, embodied narratives in the public realm. Bringing together international, multidisciplinary approaches, the chapters in this volume interrogate the ways in which memorial constructions disclose implicitly and explicitly the proxy battle for public memory and identity, particularly since 2015. Acknowledging the ways in which the past — which is given agency through monuments and memorials — intrudes into daily life, this volume offers perspectives from researchers that answer questions about the roles of monuments and memorials as persistent, yet mutable, works whose meanings are not fixed but are, rather, subject to processes of continual re-interpretation. By using monuments and memorials as lenses through which to view race, memory, and the legacies of war, power, and subjugation, this volume demonstrates how these works, and their visible representations of entitlement, possession, control, and authority, can offer the opportunity to pose and answer questions about whose memory matters and what our symbols say about who we are and what we value. Fallen Monuments and Contested Memorials is essential reading for scholars and students studying cultural heritage, history, art history, and public history.     Abstract: ‘Race Is Everything’ looks at ideas of ‘racial science’ in the nineteenth century and the first half of the twentieth century, and how art was influenced by them. It looks at race in general, but with a particular concentration on attitudes towards and representations of people of African and Jewish descent. David Bindman argues that behind all racial ideas is the belief that outward appearance, and especially skull-shape, can be correlated with inner character and intelligence, and that these could be used to create a seemingly scientific hierarchy of races. This book considers many aspects, including the skull as a racial marker; ancient Egypt as a precedent for Southern slavery; Darwin, race and aesthetics; the ‘Mediterranean race’; the visual aspects of eugenics; and the racial politics of Emil Nolde.

    Abstract: "Part ethnography, part memoir, and part critical reflection on the Anthropocene, this book examines the ways that islands form and inform human experiences of the everyday and the extraordinary. Utilizing carefully considered anthropological perspectives drawn from over a decade of anthropological fieldwork, the author employs islands as a complex set of lenses to examine the ways that we are intimately connected, separated, and divided from ourselves, one another, and the planet. Moving across time, place and disciplinary boundaries, this book traces a narrative route from the remote islands of Micronesia to the subarctic expanses of northern Iceland, all in service of gaining a deeper understanding of the cultural resonance of islands.     Abstract: Since 1945, medical advancements and demographic change have fundamentally altered the end of life. Florian Greiner traces the different responses in East and West: the emergence of hospice movements and palliative medicine, the fight for assisted dying, and churches' search for religious meaning. His pioneering study starts with the experiences of World War II and ends with the reunified Federal Republic.
    Abstract: Tod und Sterben entwickelten sich in der Zeitgeschichte zu zentralen gesellschaftlichen Konfliktthemen. Wo war der beste Ort zum Sterben? Wie lange sollte das Leben mit Hilfe der modernen Medizin verlängert werden? Was brauchte der Mensch für einen „guten Tod"? Und durfte über ein vermeintliches Tabuthema überhaupt gesprochen werden? Die Pionierstudie von Florian Greiner untersucht erstmals die Auseinandersetzungen um das Lebensende in beiden deutschen Staaten und der wiedervereinten Bundesrepublik. Pia Volk hat sich auf die Suche nach diesen Orten gemacht. Sie erzählt von ihrer einstigen Bedeutung und ihrem Untergang und besichtigt in Wäldern, auf Feldern, im Watt oder in Asphaltwüsten die Überreste einstiger Größe. Ein kurzweiliger Atlas für alle, die schon immer ahnten, dass unter unseren Füßen eine versunkene Welt liegt. Auf dem Grund des Bodensees finden sich Reste großer Pfahlbausiedlungen aus prähistorischer Zeit. An der Ostsee lag die kosmopolitische Siedlung Haithabu, ein Knotenpunkt zwischen Skandinavien, dem Baltikum und Westeuropa. Die nordfriesische Stadt Rungholt versank im 14. Jahrhundert in einer Sturmflut. Als man schon glaubte, sie existiere nur in den Sagen, fand man ihre Überreste im Watt. Von dem großen jüdischen Ghetto an der Außenseite der Frankfurter Stadtmauer, das bis ins 19. Jahrhundert existierte, sind heute nur noch Reste erhalten. Im 20. Jahrhundert mussten Ortschaften der innerdeutschen Grenze oder Stauseen weichen, und bis heute werden Dörfer für den Braunkohleabbau weggebaggert. Pia Volk beschreibt kenntnisreich das Schicksal von 30 exemplarischen Orten, die von unseren Landkarten verschwunden sind, und lässt uns über ein versunkenes Deutschland staunen, das hier und da noch an die Oberfläche ragt.

    Abstract: Beschleunigung, Zeitverdichtung und Effizienz sind oft genannte Schlagworte unserer Gegenwart, die sich aufs Engste mit der Stadt verbinden. Hektik und Geschäftigkeit im urbanen Raum scheinen Menschen zu Funktionsträgern zu verwandeln. Die Brüchigkeit dieser vorherrschenden Vorstellung zeigt sich aber bereits an Figuren wie der des Flaneurs, der sich gerade im Getriebe der Großstadt gelassen bewegt. Auch scheinbar gegenläufige Tendenzen lassen sich erkennen: Orte wie Stadtparks oder Museen suggerieren ebenso Refugien der Entschleunigung wie eine wachsende 'Erholungsindustrie'. Im selben Moment können aber solche Angebote wieder den Mechanismen der Zweckgebundenheit und der Selbstoptimierung unterliegen. Der Sammelband widmet sich diesen komplexen Fragen und ambivalenten Befunden und beleuchtet erstmals aus geistes-, kultur- und sozialwissenschaftlicher Perspektive mögliche Freiräume der Muße im urbanen Raum.

    Abstract: In Immeasurable Weather Sara J. Grossman explores how environmental data collection has been central to the larger project of settler colonialism in the United States. She draws on an extensive archive of historical and meteorological data spanning two centuries to show how American scientific institutions used information about the weather to establish and reinforce the foundations of a white patriarchal settler society. Grossman outlines the relationship between climate data and state power in key moments in the history of American weather science, from the nineteenth-century public data-gathering practices of settler farmers and teachers and the automation of weather data during the Dust Bowl to the role of meteorological satellites in data science's integration into the militarized state. Throughout, Grossman shows that weather science reproduced the natural world as something to be measured, owned, and exploited. This data gathering, she contends, gave coherence to a national weather project and to a notion of the nation itself, demonstrating that weather science's impact cannot be reduced to a set of quantifiable phenomena

    Abstract: Wer von Erbe im Zusammenhang mit Identität spricht, verspricht sich und Anderen "Kontinuität" und "Stabilität". Das Versprechen hält indes nur so lange, wie sich Menschen auf die damit verbundenen Erzählungen einlassen. Da diese zunehmend hinterfragt werden und der Begriff "Identität" im politischen Raum zu einer umkämpften Kategorie avanciert ist, werden auch die lange gehegten, gewohnten "Konstruktionen" instabil. Dies zeigt sich insbesondere in Momenten des Konflikts, der übergriffigen Inanspruchnahme und des Verlusts. Der Titel "Instabile Konstruktionen" verweist zugleich auf die beiden Kernbereiche des Kollegs: einerseits auf Architektur und Denkmalpflege, in denen der Begriff Konstruktion sich auf bauliche Manifestationen bezieht, von denen eine gewisse Haltbarkeit und Dauerhaftigkeit erwartet wird und andererseits auf die Kultur- und Sozialwissenschaften, wo Konstruktion die soziale Herstellung symbolischer Sinnwelten meint. Ins Zentrum rückt so der Anspruch, die materielle Umwelt im Wechselverhältnis zu ihrer sozialen Gemachtheit zu verstehen.

    Abstract: Orte werden von Natur und Kultur geprägt, sind mit Ideen verbunden und werden erst im Gespräch mit anderen Menschen zur Heimat. In der Geobotanik geht es um die Beziehungen der Pflanzen zu ihren Wuchsorten, zum Boden und zum Klima. Daher setzt geobotanisches Arbeiten stets auch die Auseinandersetzung mit Geologie, Geographie und Klimatologie, aber vor allem mit historischen Abläufen und kulturgeschichtlichen Fachgebieten voraus. Es müssen immer wieder Brücken geschlagen werden von naturwissenschaftlichen zu kulturwissenschaftlichen Themen. Diese Form von Interdisziplinarität ermöglicht es, eine Heimat zu erkennen und zu beschreiben. Über Landschaften, Heimaten und deren Pflanzen hat Hansjörg Küster in den letzten Jahrzehnten immer wieder publiziert, für Zeitungen und Zeitschriften, wissenschaftliche Veröffentlichungen, Überblicksdarstellungen und Handbücher. Oft stehen Landschaften im Mittelpunkt, die man als Heimaten verstehen kann und in denen man Menschen aus Nah und Fern integrieren kann - wenn man nur darüber spricht. Die Beiträge dieses Buches geben dafür vielerlei Anregungen.

    Abstract: Current cultural theory makes much of the role of the imagination of the "primitive" and the "indigenous" in the making of modern empires. In this study of Russian and Soviet governance of the Evenki hunters and reindeer herders of Northern Siberia, the author explores the reverse side of this social imaginary, exploring what he calls "cultures of statehood" among the very people whom the state consistently rendered stateless. He examines the political uses of state institutions and the practices of identification with the state by indigenous Siberians who are traditionally described as stateless kin-based peoples whose cultures are determined by long-term adaptation to the harsh northern environment and for whom the proximity of state institutions is solely a cause of suffering. Ssorin-Chaikov's goal is not merely to undo the displacement of indigenous lifestyles and identities to the imagined landscape beyond and before the Russian/Soviet state. It is, rather, to chart forms of government that expand alongside displacement, to examine the social life of the state in everyday contexts extending well beyond formal institutions, and to theorize statehood from a unique vantage point

    Abstract: Focusing on some of the most important ethnographers in early anthropology, this volume explores twelve defining works in the foundational period from 1870 to 1922.
